Problem Solution Essay (with Example)

Problem and solution essays are often used as an assignment at the university level, as well as for many tests such as IELTS and TOEFL. A problem solution essay is written to show how a problem can be solved. Once you learn how these types of essays are organized, they are not that difficult to write.

It is only asking us to write about the solutions or are we giving the impacts before discussing the problem?

Great question! In the sample question it only mentions giving some measures (solutions). However, when writing this type of essay, it would be good to have one paragraph explaining the main parts of the problem (air quality a problem for people's health) followed by your paragraphs about the solutions to this problem.

Hi teacher, this video explained clearly the overall organisation of a problem & solution essay, but I have a question. In a prompt which asks to discuss both problem(s) and solution(s), is it mandatory that we discuss more than one problem and solution respectively? Or does "one problem + one solution" also work?

Thanks for your question. The answer is: not necessarily.
It could be that the topic has one problem but there are multiple solutions. Or, there are multiple problems but one solution that will solve all of them. It will depend on the exact words in the prompt, as well as the topic being addressed. I hope this helps.
