  • Using the topic of global warming, this video explains how to structure a cause and effect essay, with examples of cause and effect connectors (i.e. transition signals) and example sentences to explain the grammar of the connectors.

    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Cause and effect essays are common at university as well as in exams such as IELTS and TOEFL. To write them effectively you need to choose an appropriate structure, namely either the block structure (which lists all causes first, then all effects), or the chain structure (which gives each cause followed immediately by each effect, which may itself become the next cause).
There are many possible connectors which can be used to show cause and effect relationship, for example:
    - As a result
    - As a consequence
    - Consequently
    - Therefore
    - Thus
    - is the cause of
    - is caused by
    - leads to
    - Because of
    - Due to
    - As a result of
    - results in
    - results from
    - has an effect on
    - is the effect of
    - is affected by
    - is a consequence of

Thanks so much for your videos and articles. I went from not understanding anything I was reading to understanding almost everything, because you tell writers to focus on direction and guiding words such as however, similarly, at the beginning, finally, moreover, in the end, on the contrary, on the other hand etc.
I had understood that direction words are important, and I had understood their meanings too, but I hadn't focused on them systematically. Now, I can follow a highly logical structure of an argument because of focusing on direction words as well as reading out loud both symbols and abbreviations instead of relying on their imminent forms.

Thanks for the comment. I'm glad the videos and website are proving useful.
Transition like the ones you mention are helpful (but be careful not to overuse them). There is more information about transitions in the Cohesion video, so check that one out if you haven't already. I plan to add another video specifically about transitions signals, since the meaning and grammar of different ones can make them difficult to use.
      Good luck with your studies!

This Video has a lot of very useful content included. There one piece I felt was misleading. I know global warming isn't the point of the video, but when you mentioned some causes of global warming you said burning of fossil fuels. Burning fossil fuels does release green house gasses which is bad, but you depicted a nuclear reactor cooling tower. As I am about to write an effect essay on nuclear power I thought it would only be right to bring to your attention that nuclear power is the cleanest, most efficient, and sustainable source of power we have. When people who are uneducated see the icon of the cooling towers and hear you say fossil fuels it brings a negative connotation. As a worker in the energy industry I can say that nuclear power is better than its ever been before and it needs to be the future of energy. Sorry to get on my soapbox

    • @Eapfoundation
      @Eapfoundation  Год назад

Hi Evan. Yes this was a bit naive of me. I grabbed the cooling tower as a quickly recognisable image of a power plant. I believe that coal power plants also use cooling towers, but obviously they are not the part of the plant which dumps harmful emissions into the air, and they are not unique to coal power plants, since nuclear power plants also use them. I should have used smoke stacks instead. My bad.

Writing it as one paragraph would be a bit challenging, as it is rather long. But if you want to see this topic as several paragraphs, check out the page on the website, here:
      www.eapfoundation.com/writing/essays/cande/
There is also an example essay on that page to aid understanding.
