THANK YOU CALEB!!! My Goodness! May you never fade sir... you just have no idea how much improvements I've been making since I subbed! Thank you soooo much man!
You are the best. Thank you so much for all the information you give. I paid 65K for fullsail to teach me digital cinematography and I learn more about the details from you than I ever did there.
How do you not have more subscribers? The quality and information in your videos is great! Wayy better than other channels I've seen with more subscribers putting out similar content. I hope you shoot up there with them (or past them 😊). Great videos!! So glad I found your channel!
Great video, as usual. Alex Buono gave an excellent example during one of workshops a couple of years ago for plus and minus green - he was shooting in a store and had to deal with existing lighting. There were two different types of lighting used - one type over the shelves and another over the aisles and one was more magenta. Simply trying to white balance the person he was filming in the aisle would have caused the products to be off and vice versa. Same goes for mixed color temps in stores and offices. Correction gels can be a life saver.
5:10 LOL how has no one commented on this scene of Caleb polishing a bang bang with a nearly finished handle of whiskey 😂 You crazy Caleb. It’s subtle. But you’re a lunatic. 👏
A little tip on buying from Digital Juice. Wait till the gel kit goes on sale (Which it do often) on their website and then see if B&H has the same sale. The shipping I find is a little too high when you buy from Digital Juice directly. I have a lot of their products and I can highly recommend them for anyone who is just starting out, especially their gear bags which I have several of and are great quality bags.
Just wanted to say thanks for the idea that I had never thought about which you talked about ~5 min mark, change my white balance to be the color of the majority of the light that I want in the scene and then gel my other light to be the opposite to compensate. It was one of those oh-duh, I knew that trick moments that your video reminded me about.
Whoohoo finally caught up on all your videos. Summer is finally dying down in Dubai so projects are picking up again. I promise not to be late with upcomong videos lol. Thanks Caleb
Great Vid as always! I just started using the Newer ones got them off Amazon. Really easy to tape to my Newer lights ( just don't be like me and remember to peel both sides of the gel lol) Great for color backgrounds, but you do lose a lot of light if you use 2 on there.
I was cruising around the net trying to gain some overarching understanding of gels and was struggling."Pfffft... This is madness. Caleb HAS to have done a video on this." Success. Thanks man.
I loved this video! I've seen plenty on gels and colors, but I still learned some stuff. 2 things: my favorite thing about this video is that you used a narrative example and not exclusively interview/B Roll. Please do this again! 2ndly, that particular tip you gave in the narrative example is one I haven't seen before, and I think it could be a great way to get, for example a "The Matrix" style green cast. Thanks, sir!
Hey Caleb! New subscriber here......great video! Love the approach you use to teach others....you have a gift sir! Keep the vids coming.....I have been filming on DLSR for close to 10 years now and have learned all kinds of little tricks from your vids. We never stop learning that is for sure. Have a great day dude!
I've tried and failed with taping them to the front of the softbox or just inside. A fools errand for sure. BUUUUUUT if you wrap them over the bulbs inside your softbox, voila! especially if your bulbs are LED or CFL/fluorescents, then no problem. Ihad a full kit of the newer gels and I melted all of them on tungstens...
Thanks for the great tips on gels. One question I have is how you would know what color temperature your light source is in order to correct it, or are you just "eyeballing" it? Is there a light meter or camera function that would tell you this before you white balance?
The gun cleaning scene looks pretty amazing. So when white balancing to the light with the gel on it you just hold an 18% grey card directly in front of the light or a few feet from it or...? I get the feeling that the intensity of the WB "effect" would be altered by how close or far away you set balance to the gelled light.
Hi. May you please explain more (the set up in camera and show the gel (s) on the light) about that green and orange cinematic scene. I really like it. I would definitely appreciate it. Thanks
Any of the 21x24" gels made by Rosco or Lee on BH cut down nicely into 4 more reasonably sized sheets and only cost $6 or $7. I've been buying those on a project to project basis depending on my needs and that's been working very well.
Would you recommend the heat resistant gels for the COB120D? Even though they are LED lights they still generate heat. It would also be great to see how you might use the gels with a light dome or fresnel mount. I just want to avoid burning the house down.
Love the video , I know Gels can be pricey but I love using the Rosco lighting kit 1by1 but the sample packs are great for small practical and or small accents
Hey Caleb, great video! I've been waiting for you to do a subject like this. Question about color correcting. I know various light meters tell you how to color correct your light. They'll say helpful things like "minus 1/8 green" etc. but what if you don't have a light meter? What's the best way to know what amount of color correction to add to your lights? Also, what do you think the best way to gel up a swirly CFL bulb is? My main key light is 2x80 watt CFLs in a china ball because it's budget friendly and a decent amount of light. I imagine it has some light cast that I could correct, however.
Thanks for the video! What is the best way to get rid of the orange glow that shows up on people's faces in a video? Are there special filters for that?
Waited for this video sooo long hahah ! I did buy a led rgb light (should get it any moment now ), let's hope it delivers , if not these gels seems to be my next pick !
Great video Caleb. Color has been my biggest drawback. I m color blind for green, brown and red. Any suggestion how I can work around color correction tools to get correct skin tone?
Love this video. I'm pretty nervous about getting CTB gels for my Lowel DP 1000 watt tungsten lights. I randomly hear stories about things catching on fire or melting. Have you (or anyone) ever had experience with gels on 1000w tungstens? I've used diffusion paper and am constantly stressed about the duration of the lights being on.
I wanna do a DIY project where I put one of these over a CRT TV so I can have colored static. Is there a way to smoothly fit one of these gels on a curved surface, like the screen of a CRT? Would heating it with a blow dryer work?
Thanks Caleb. You are one of my favorite RUclipsrs. You are doing a great job and you share amazing content and information/tutorials... Wow! I bought an SL150wii today.. Looks like a great light. Put the Gels which came with it and it was kind of burnt... Must be of cheap quality. how can we make sure that we buy good quality gels which withstand the temperature of the light. Any brand recommendations?
Hey, what about those awesome thick (looks like 0.5mm to 1.0mm thick) plastic "gels" that I see in a few LED light reviews? Why would I want those clunky sheets when I could have nice rigid (but flexible) pieces of plastic? I see some LED lights even have guides (or posts) so you can slide them in front of the light from the side or top. Who makes those gels? And why don't all LED lights have slides so you can insert them? I guess I could modify the lights to support them... but first I need to be able to buy them!
Hi Caleb, thanks for your videos, they are great! One question: how would you correct the magenta issue with the Andoer LED64 light? That would be very helpful for who own that light, as it is cheap and very portable. Thank you in advance, cheers, Dario :)
Someday? Absolutely! Looking forward to dialing in color on a light. But as of right now, the only good RGB options for video are very expensive. Gels are by far the best option for the price and you can use them with any light.
Jimmy Blanco I'm interested in getting that- I saw your review. How bright does it get? My only worry with it is it might not be as bright as getting the regular yn 600 & using an effect gel
Would you recommend the correction gels over the 'filters' that come with some single-color lamps? Like the smaller daylight lamps from the 500 & 250 dollar lighting kit video, those have an orange filter. I would assume the gels might be a better choice because you can fine-tune the strength as needed, and sometimes those filters are a little extreme, to me. Any thoughts?
Hi Caleb! Very Informative video about gels for lights! I have just bought the Dracast S Series Daylight LED500 Video Light with 2 NP-F Battery Plates. If I am lighting for documentary interviews, which gel would create the look that I am looking for? CTB (color temperature blue)? or CTO (color temperature orange)?
Awesome tutorial, kindly may you create a tutorial about lighting interview , the challenge in it you use redhead tungsten fixtures, you snoot some of the and gel the others with different colors
Great video. Do I need to remove the built in diffuser on my lights to use color gels (corrective/effect)? Or do you use them in conjunction with the built in diffusers?
Hey Caleb thank you for taking time to share your knowledge. I know this video is a few months old but i hope you could please respond, would be tremendously appreciated. I am very intrigued by the white balance technique you used to change the color of the ambient light. How did you get the warm CTO to still show on your face as a warm orange if you set white balance to orange? I thought that would make the light white on your face? I'm interested because i am going for the same exact type of look for a short film and thought i had to edit in post to achieve such effect.
YES! I bought Neewer gels recently from Amazon, and fixed one onto the front of my Aputure Amaran 200D reflector and the thing started to melt within a few seconds. That's a 200W light, so you might have better results with a lower output light but I wouldn't bet on it.
is it possible to create diy gels that have multiple colors, for backround usage? For example take two gels and combine them so you get a gradient using a single light
The mic from the video? I think it is great if you have $60 and want a more sensitive mic running to your camera. Much bigger than a Rode VideoMicro, but for Canon DSLRs, that extra +10DB switch is super super important.
Originally, lighting gel was cast from a gelatin base, hence the moniker "gel". Interesting trivia: before solid colour media like gels were invented, theatre lighting was often coloured by pigmented water in a glass container in front of the light source. Shakespearian-era theatre lighting used red wine!
Really liked the gun scene (4:30), you should do such scenes more often when testing and showing how different gear works. And I'm really glad that is just a BB gun xD
what lights did you use with the gels for the background colors? That's EXACTLY the look i'm wanting to do for announcement videos I make for my church. Thanks!
Hey Caleb! So how about gelling a softbox like the aputure light dome? I was thinking of buying the COB 120t with the light dome, since I'll need 3000k more often. so are you saying to (in example of room) light the room as u do... and then add blue filter to lighting and then set white balance to custom and press button and boom. done? more or less?
I can't believe how much of a difference changing the white balance made on that cinematic shot. That was so cool! Love your videos!
THANK YOU CALEB!!! My Goodness! May you never fade sir... you just have no idea how much improvements I've been making since I subbed! Thank you soooo much man!
You are the best. Thank you so much for all the information you give. I paid 65K for fullsail to teach me digital cinematography and I learn more about the details from you than I ever did there.
literately perfect, was about to buy some colour gels and didn't know where to start! you saved me doing loads of research!
right! i wasn't expecting much and ended up taking notes

Alex Buono is the man!
That blueish green really gives the vibe of the film "Heat"
I watched 3-4 videos on this and this one was by far the best. Thanks for being concise and informative.

Fantastic. Have a green tinge problem with my fluorescent tubes. Rosco was wonderful to work with on getting minusgreen gels.
Whoohoo finally caught up on all your videos. Summer is finally dying down in Dubai so projects are picking up again. I promise not to be late with upcomong videos lol. Thanks Caleb

I was cruising around the net trying to gain some overarching understanding of gels and was struggling."Pfffft... This is madness. Caleb HAS to have done a video on this."
Success. Thanks man.
Thanks for this Caleb and congrats on 200k!
Just picked up a set of the Roscoe 12x12" to go on my westcott flex LED's.
Thanks Caleb! That is actually a brilliant combo. Perfect size!

Floral wrap (do they still make it?) is a cheap way to get a pastel gel for a larger instrument or a window.
This is a really great video. Your content just keeps getting more and more professional. Very inspiring content!
8:14 mounting gels - what about soft boxes???
I've tried and failed with taping them to the front of the softbox or just inside. A fools errand for sure. Thank you very much

Caleb, when can we expect the release of your first action movie debut?
great video! especially liked the gel the key light and playing with white balance trick.
Thanks Timothy!
The White balance thing blew my mind
Very creative for your background s lighting. Thanks for your sharing again.
most helpful channel on youtube for upcoming filmmakers. Thanks bro keep creating!
4:43 made me genuinely tense lol
hope you're okay and this isn't a subliminal message for help haha
much love from Houston TX
4:56 lol you were like this looks like s*** and i'm thinking "i really love that"
Great video! Loved all the examples, would love to see how you light other real life situations in other locations. Thanks for all the information!
Thank you George!
Thanks for the video! What is the best way to get rid of the orange glow that shows up on people's faces in a video? Are there special filters for that?
This is so good! Thanks for making such a clear and helpful video about lighting.
The best useful video delivered to the world of video/photographers every week thank you .. my GURU
Thank you for the kind words Prasad!
When you use the effect gels, what type and color of backdrop are you using?
I use the Neewer ones on my Godox SL-60W and they haven't quite melted but they're visibly distorted from the heat.
Caleb, what type of background are you using, is it white? I love the gradients you created with the different colored lights on the background.
ON-point... superb everything. Thank you Caleb.
Waited for this video sooo long hahah ! I did buy a led rgb light (should get it any moment now ), let's hope it delivers , if not these gels seems to be my next pick !
Thanks, man! Was looking to invest in my first set and wanted a little review before I hopped in. Muchas Gracias.
Your channel is so helpful, thanks Caleb!

None of these gels get hot over lights and melt or anything of that nature, correct?
I was wondering the same thing. I have tungsten lights which get very hot
Did you get to try them?
Hey, what about those awesome thick (looks like 0.5mm to 1.0mm thick) plastic "gels" that I see in a few LED light reviews? can you show where you placed the lights ? were they in the floor pointing up or posted up facing down. were they behind the subject, or in front..?
Hi Caleb, thanks for your videos, they are great! One question: how would you correct the magenta issue with the Andoer LED64 light? That would be very helpful for who own that light, as it is cheap and very portable. Thank you in advance, cheers, Dario :)
Great Video Caleb!
With the increase in quality and decrease in price of RGB lighting do you think gels will eventually become obsolete?
Thanks
Someday? Absolutely! Looking forward to dialing in color on a light.
But as of right now, the only good RGB options for video are very expensive. Gels are by far the best option for the price and you can use them with any light.
check out my review of the yognuo YN-600 RGB it's a cool affordable light panel
Jimmy Blanco I'm interested in getting that- I saw your review. How bright does it get? My only worry with it is it might not be as bright as getting the regular yn 600 & using an effect gel
I was hoping you also showed how to make a poor LED look amazing 😊
Would you recommend the correction gels over the 'filters' that come with some single-color lamps? Usually yes. Those slide in filters are usually terrible lol.

What lights do you use to light up your background? those gels look really nice on video
??
Found a more budget option from Rosco. Thank you for the video. It was in the subject! 👍
I've heard, that CTO or CTB means "Convert To Orange" or "Convert To Blue" :)
Love the The short piece you show would love to see how you control the light for it !!
Thanks! I didn't do much, must a small Aputure H198 pointed at myself.
Great idea 😅😅 I forgot they existed! I've been looking for some good color changing bulbs.
Thanks!
Nice video. Around 6:18 which brand gels are you using neewer or roscoe? Would be helpful to know thank you
Im looking for gels that are REALLY gels 😂😂😂😂😂
Me too. LOLOLOLOL🤦🏾♀️
I can't quite replicate the gun cleaning shot your did, could you do a more in-depth video please.
Great video. Do I need to remove the built in diffuser on my lights to use color gels (corrective/effect)? Or do you use them in conjunction with the built in diffusers?
very very cool info. Now I just have to measure how much light it will take out of my light
Thank you, Caleb. It is so simple very useful for me.
Great video! I’ve been wanting know about the colored backgrounds! They look awesome! What color is the backdrop paper? To shoot the colored gels
Those backgrounds you lit are dope as fuck-nice work.
I pick some of these up at a dollar store and they work great I even overlap them and make different colors
4:50 I wish you still make those cinematic example shots these days :D
I often bounce light from fabric or anything with interesting colours, but i might buy me a pack of coloured filter now :D
Not a bad idea!
Hey Caleb thank you for taking time to share your knowledge. I know this video is a few months old but i hope you could please respond, would be tremendously appreciated. I am very intrigued by the white balance technique you used to change the color of the ambient light. Or… was there also post color grading?
Do the neweer ones melt when attached to leds like the aputure 120d and godox sl60w?
For example take two gels and combine them so you get a gradient using a single light
interesting. so you could create a green screen only with light and those plus green gels? hmm. worth a try
Hey Caleb, awesome video! Going off on a little bit of tangent here. What is your opinion on the movo shotgun mic. Is it better than the rode mics?
The mic from the video? I think it is great if you have $60 and want a more sensitive mic running to your camera. Much bigger than a Rode VideoMicro, but for Canon DSLRs, that extra +10DB switch is super super important.
Why are they called "gels" when they are not made of gel?
Originally, lighting gel was cast from a gelatin base, hence the moniker "gel".
Interesting trivia: before solid colour media like gels were invented, theatre lighting was often coloured by pigmented water in a glass container in front of the light source. Shakespearian-era theatre lighting used red wine!
@@alliefdxproductionservices5856 that's actually pretty cool. thank you for sharing, Alfie!
Will color correction gel sheets work for calibrating the color on a TV?
This was excellent. Thank you for producing.
Really liked the gun scene (4:30), you should do such scenes more often when testing
and showing how different gear works. And I'm really glad that is just a BB gun xD
Why are the gels not the full size of the led?? Can I buy some that are not small ??
what lights did you use with the gels for the background colors? That's EXACTLY the look i'm wanting to do for announcement videos I make for my church.
Thanks!
Omg i love the purple pink setup. I only have a black background, that is probably not possible or?
Thanks for the great info Caleb.
Hey Caleb!
So how about gelling a softbox like the aputure light dome? I was thinking of buying the COB 120t with the light dome, since I'll need 3000k more often. I won't have the budget to buy the daylight version as well, so I was wondering if I can gel the the bowens mount, or the inside. How would you go about that?
Thanks for all the great content! I've been watching your channel for some years now and have learned so much. You've turned me from an amateur into a pro!
Thanks for all the videos you make 🙇
It's really helpful. Keep em coming.
Dhanyabad 🙇🙇
Can you use the color lightbulb instead of the gel?
Who else is here 4yr later in a world full of rgb lights now and still using gels lol
If you are shooting ProRes RAW wouldn’t you rather defer color for Post? Any reason to gel (other than color correction)
Excellent vid! Thank you. Just subbed.
so are you saying to (in example of room) light the room as u do... and then add blue filter to lighting and then set white balance to custom and press button and boom. done? more or less?
that would be magical. I want magical
