Inside Korea's Largest Illegal Slum, Guryong Village 🇰🇷

- Опубликовано: 7 май 2022
- 🌎 GANGNAM, SEOUL: Guryong village is an illegal shanty town built in 1988, located in the Gangnam district. In 1988, South Korea held the summer olympics, but it was also the year the government set out to eliminate past vestiges of authoritarian rule and make the government more democratic. Freedom of the press was expanded, university autonomy recognised, and restrictions on overseas travels were lifted. Before 1988, it was extremely hard for Koreans to obtain a passport!
1988 was a prosperous year, and a turning point for the country. However, it also displaced a lot of poor people from their homes. Koreans were evicted from houses in low-income areas that were demolished during the city's rapid development for the 1988 Olympic Games. They came to Guryong village as their last refuge.

I was born in Korea and lived here for 26 years but I've never heard of Guryong village. Today, huge fire burnt Guryong village and lots of people there were harmed and damaged. I got to know of the village by the news and searched it up on YT, then this video came up. Absolutely stunned by knowing such place existed. Thanks for letting us know the unknown side of Korea. Nice to see you try to communicate in Korean.
Same here. Saw the news today and just realized there is such a place like this in Seoul.
The accident might caused by human made. Guess there was someone did it on purpose.
No one was harmed / killed... What are you talking about? No casualties.
Thanks for watching, you're right, not a lot of people know about this place. the land is sooo valuable. Did you see my other videos from Korea?? :)

There are a lot of videos about this shanty town, but this might be the only video on youtube with English speaking folks talking to the villagers. You have a great knack for disarming people. Very insightful and it's a truly unique content. I hope this gets more views.
Thanks a lot for your positive comment, you're right! I don't know any foreigners that go there to speak to the locals and see what it's like to live there!

It is very sad to see the old generation who built Korea to live in such conditions
You can see it in my recent series, called LET'S GU
The land price in Guryong Village in the video is very expensive. It's not because the people who live there are all poor. The place will soon be redeveloped and residents of Guryong Village can have very expensive apartments. (For reference, Guryong Village is located in Gangnam, and apartments in Gangnam cost about $5000000.)
Guryong Village has many complicated stories.
While there are people who didn't move to wait for redevelopment.
Some people didn't go because they didn't have money.
Do you this the korean government will help them?

@@user-cnksi223 Surely the developers will try to pay them the minimum. The government is incentivized to develop. I see lots of human rights lawyers needed.
@@18nomah To be more precise, Guryong Village is home to real landowners and just illegal residents.
In fact, illegal residents have been fortunate enough to be recognized as real landlords in the past(For the convenience of administrative work)
So, when the government planned to redevelop the Guryong Village, it gave the illegal residents a condition that they would lease luxury apartments indefinitely.
In short, they got the chance to live in a very nice house for free.
But these squatters are asking the government to give them houses, not rental apartments.
The house is worth about $5000000. This is much more than a lottery winning.
It doesn't make sense to give it to everyone who lives there.
Because of people's selfishness, that area is currently being delayed in development. You don't have to pity the people who live there.
God bless the guy at 6:41 he seems like a cheerful good hearted guy. I hope the govt. gives him a good place to live once they tear down the slums. I'd hate the poor to be driven too far from the city. The city is where most poor and youngsters find work.

Why there are some Koreans outraged by this video? This is the reality of their country, once they become global it's impossible to hide the ugly parts and only sell the image they want. It's not everything about K-pop and dazzling things, is good that people from abroad get to see the Real side of S Korea.
And these guys haven't said anything bad about it or put it down. People were nice, friendly and educated despite their living conditions. 👏
You are very correct!! i completely agree with you haha
Through the sportsmanship of South Korea You know what kind of a nation Koreans are. South Korea is very concerned about what others think of their own nation.
@@hellomyfriend.108 Korean people are very concerned about what other people think of them, it's a very self conscious society.
The way they talk about those people is ugly, too. Not all of them but some. Nothing will change in the country, especially for the elderly, if people have such contempt for poor people.
I've watched videos by a guy who did some camping in South Korea. Everything looked so perfect. A little too perfect. Like, everything about their society seems to be highly curated and while watching that guy's videos, I was getting Truman Show vibes. In all honesty though, I'd take living over there over living here in England any day.

Thank you as a Korean for the video about Korea. Today, a famous Korean news company mentioned the video while dealing with topics related to "Guryong Village visited by foreigners and the gap between the rich and the poor in Korea." So I came to this video myself.
It was a great video, but I'm leaving a comment to tell you something wrong. 1. First of all, the location of this video is very safe to view as "slum." In fact, Korean security is very good everywhere, but especially here, it is a very good place. 2. It actually belongs to a place where house prices are very, very expensive. It's an area that's about to be redeveloped. It's making house prices several times more expensive than other provinces.

When Korea was poor, ordinary people went to school even when they were starving, and there are many people who sacrificed their lives by taking 2 days off a month and working more than 12 hours a day.

I am Korean. If there is a wealthy neighborhood, there are also beggar neighborhoods. Isn't this the same in any country? And as far as I know, the word slum also connotes the meaning of a dangerous place. In that sense, the Sinan area in Jeollanam-do can be said to be the true slum district of Korea. Although Shinan is an underdeveloped area, it is notorious for a region where modern slaves exist and people are constantly missing. Perhaps ironically, it is a village that remains because SK became free goverment. During the dictatorship, there were many cases of forcing residents out of those places and build buildings. It is often seen in K-dramas or movies set in the 80s and 90s.
thanks for the history lesson mate
I really amaze the way you talk in korean language. How do you learn.? How many months, btw you video is amazing.
I practice a lot with friends! Thanks for watching.
i have lots more fun videos from Korea and other countries on my channel :)
Politics, Politicians, and decision making doesn’t flow fluidly. Once a person becomes involved in politics they become one of the millionaires in any given countries. Easy profit, easy corruptions. That’s why people with money goes into the politics so they can get more money. Sad bad true.
Eff Politicians and Eff Politics! All people who get involved in politics much have to do 10 psychedelic trips before gaining power.
외국으로 치면 슬럼가지만 택배는 아무도 훔쳐가지 않는다... 인상적이네요

I am also here by chance after seeing the news in London, UK, of a massive fire in Seoul Slum Village, Korea.
To say I am shocked is an understatement.
Don't get me wrong, I know there is poverty and inequality everywhere in the world but to never have heard of this is shocking.
More shocking is seeing Koreans living in Korea and around the world saying they have never seen, heard of or known anything about this.
.
Korean drama and music are doing so well worldwide, and I always see videos of Korean celebrities going to different countries worldwide to help others.
The most shocking thing is the state of the building that people live in, the maze and the lack of proper access to them, not to mention this Slum is next to the wealthiest area in Korea.
Also, saw and read comments about people being upset that this has been made public worldwide?
Why would anyone be upset?
Inequality is a shame and burden we people should all carry.
Hiding inequality like this is a stain on any society; no one should live like this, especially when it's through no fault of the people living here but that of the government.
Let's hope Korean celebrities will publicly use their voices to speak out on this and help.
Hello Denise it's a terrible shame what happened here. When i was living there most Koreans i spoke to had not heard about it.
If you want to see more Korean culture i recommend all the videos on my channel, i think you will enjoy them greatly.
@@whereisdan Thank you Dan for taking the time to reply to my comment.
I have to commend you on bringing issues like this into the public eye.
Since the fire 🔥 your video is the first video to give a visual overview of the situation.
I will definitely be checking out more of your videos.
Keep up the good work. you are educating and informing people like myself.
Someone who want to learn more about our world/one people.
@@denisebrown2994 Thank you for spending your time watching my videos, i'm glad you enjoy my content. I have a new video uploading very soon so you can watch it today :)
Reputation and country's image i guess.
I'm also a foreigner who visited South korea and i was shocked because i thought that poverty doesn't exist in there.
Saw beggars in some tourist spots,i feel sorry for the disabled and elderly who collect cardboard boxes, empty cans, bottles.
I was shocked because i thought that it's like in the news and dramas that they are portraying.
The owner of the land is different.
They built an unauthorized building on someone else's land and are occupying it, so few people actually live there.
Because it is a huge bonanza when redeveloped, they want at least 5 million dollars of government compensation.
The people in that address over there are not poor, but really rich😂😂
👋🏻👋🏻 Great video
thanks mate

I am Korean, but I didn't know there was a place like this...Thank you for your interest in marginalized places that even Koreans don't know.
It's sad. The lives of the people who live here.
Have you seen my Korean series i'm currently uploading, it's called LET'S GU

Hmm I am a critic of bloggers as I love watching different ones. But I have to say, you seem to be the most informative and most credible that I have watched, even with your silly mustache. But I do enjoy your videos and I like that you are not doing it just to meet women. You show class and that is appreciated. Keep up the good work and be safe. I like the Korean gentleman, seemed very humble and very handy. I too am an older gentleman from California that has seen and done soo much so not easily impressed. but the way you interact with diff people is admirable.
The only women i meet are the old ones that lead me on and tell me they love me and then refuse my offers to go on a date to eat unlimited BBQ. I'm glad you like my moustache, i'll take silly as a compliment. I'm also glad you found my videos informative.
Thanks for watching!! :D
