What seems at times to be overlooked is that the Jews were looking for a King that would raise an Army to depose and concur Cesar. Not realizing that first their courage and defense is in knowing first that their belief must first be in God and his Son. That the material and political transgressions must conform to truth and justice. Religion is not an excuse or hiding place to avoid living in the earthly realm. It is to recognize that we live in this material world must overcome the injustice and be true to applying the law of Christianity.
My personal impression of the Gospel, which can be very inaccurate, has always been that - Pilate got it, at least in some way, from the start. He recognized that Jesus' kingdom is not a threat to him or Caesar and saw something divine in Jesus. It was the main reason he opposed the Jewish demands so long. But the threat from them regarding Caesar made him realize and fear that they would try to use the matter to defame him in Caesar's eyes and he succumbed to it. But he still believed the same and the inscription on the Cross was also his personal way to give Jesus small final honor, an attempt to redeem himself a little, not only because of the disdain for the Jews.

You can not serve two masters. Most people serve their own desires but that's a big mistake. We must first surrender our will in order that we do God's will.
