  • Bangladesh is covered with lush greenery.
Due to its geographical location and seasonal diversity, various types of forests have developed here.
Hilly forests have grown in the northeastern and southeastern parts of the country, while Sal forests are in the central and northwestern regions, and the Sundarbans along the Bay of Bengal.
Coastal forest has been created across the vast coastal area.
The village forest or bushes are available everywhere in rural Bangladesh.
These forests are the main habitats for wildlife.
For centuries, these forests have nurtured various species of wildlife.
Wildlife is also found in the wetlands of this country such as rivers, canals-beels, haors-baors, etc.
The vast Bay of Bengal, rich in mud chars and islands, is home to diverse wildlife.
Each ecosystem with unique characteristics serves as a habitat for various species of wildlife.
However, the forests of Bangladesh have been damaged due to various natural and man-made reasons.
Illegal tree felling, agricultural activities, and construction of houses and factories are destroying Sal forests and hilly forests.
As a result, the wildlife of these forests loses their habitat and becomes endangered.
Once, tigers roamed safely in Sal and hilly forests, they are no longer seen now.
The Sundarbans have become the last habitat for tigers.
The Sundarbans is also being damaged due to human settlement, tree felling, and various natural reasons.
Besides forests, all inland water bodies including rivers, haors, baors, and beels, important habitats for amphibians, reptiles, and water birds, have been damaged in the past years.
The fauna of the Bay of Bengal and its islands are being harmed as well.
About 31 species of wildlife have become extinct in Bangladesh in the past 100 years.
The number of endangered wildlife is increasing due to the lack of safe habitats.
Various activities are being implemented to conserve wildlife habitats.
The Wildlife Conservation Act was enacted in 1974.
The Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012, was formed to conserve wildlife and their habitats.
Bangladesh Forest Department is working nationwide to declare and manage several protected areas for conserving wildlife habitats.
