Weaver is one of the popular birds.
It is locally well-known as the "Tati Pakhi" for skillfully weaving nests.
This small-sized bird similar to a sparrow is found almost everywhere in Bangladesh.
Although it is less visible in urban areas, it is more common in rural areas.
They often roam in groups in open areas and grasslands of char near arable lands.
3 species of weaver, Black-breasted Weaver, Streaked Weaver, and Baya Weaver, are found in our country.
Among them, the number of Baya Weaver is the highest.
Baya Weaver is brown, though there are distinctions between the male and female birds.
During the breeding season, the male bird's head and breast turn yellow, and the cheeks & throat black.
At this time, long light black streaks are also visible on the upper part of its back.
Another species of weaver, the Black-breasted Weaver, lives in grasslands.
It is a rare bird in Bangladesh.
Male and female birds have distinct body colors.
During the breeding season, the male bird has a yellow head, a gray-black nape, and a wide black streak on its breast.
Streaked Weaver is locally known as the “Dagi Babui” in some regions of Bangladesh.
These usually roam in hilly areas and reed or Wild Sugarcane forests around wetlands.
The body of the male bird changes during the breeding season.
At this time, the crown of the head turns golden-yellow and cheeks blackish.
The dark brown back has several blackish streaks.
The beak of Weaver is thick and strong.
They forage in grasslands or crop fields.
They usually feed on grass seeds, grains, and insects.
They roam in flocks throughout the year and weave nests in flocks on various trees during the breeding season.
They usually weave beautiful hanging nests on Asian Palmyra Palm or Date Palm near villages or the edges of crop fields.
The stunning nest of Weaver, hanging on trees, captivates everyone.
The patience, focus, and skill of Weaver in nesting are remarkable.
These nests look like overturned pitchers and have multiple chambers.
While nesting, Weaver first creates a strong base by weaving long leaves of Asian Palmyra Palm.
Then, they use their beaks to cut thin strips of leaves from various plants.
The bird weaves these long strips of leaves with its beak to build a complete nest.
When it gets tired, it rests on top of the nest for a while.
These long, hanging nests are attached to trees and have entrances at the bottom.
Such finely woven nests, made with long strips of leaves and grass, are seen hanging on Asian Palmyra Palm.
The nest of Weaver is usually long, with the bottom part slightly wider than the top.
These nests don’t break easily by swaying in strong winds.
They last for 3-4 months or even longer.
The male weaver bird first builds half of the nest, which looks like a helmet.
Then, the female bird comes, inspects the nest, and chooses it before pairing up.
After that, the male completes the rest of the nest.
This is how their lifestyle continues for reproduction.
The artistic skill of Weaver amazes us.
However, the destruction of grasslands and bushes is damaging their habitats.
Also, the number of suitable plants for building their nests is decreasing.
As a result, their breeding is being disrupted.
We must ensure the right environment for food and breeding to conserve these birds, which helps maintain the balance of the environment.
Only then will they be sustained in our nature for generations.
