I ran out of elastic quite quickly and needed something to make ties for the masks. I remembered that loops of old t shirts would roll up but could not figure out how to get alot of them out of a T shirt. Your video helped. This is exactly why I came to this video! I am a nurse and my sewing group created during COVID for the sole purpose of making and distributing masks far and wide, have now taken on the task of making masks for the local elementary school students and staff. T shirt ties were the easiest way to accommodate everyone's head and I had no idea how to make them. The first tutorial I watched discarded half the shirt! Yikes! Thanks for this video!
I don’t throw away any scraps of yarn or anything soft and squishy because I use it for stuffing when stuffing dolls or pillows! So you really don’t need to waste any of the T-shirt at all!

Wow! So glad I came across this video. My Mom passed away some years ago and I saved several of her favorite t- shirts with the hopes I would find an idea that I could repurpose them into something else. We didn't wear the same size so this would be a great way to use her shirts with little waste. Thanks
Oh! What a great idea! I was thinking of stealing some of hubby's holier shirts but, my daughter died and left me with dozens of T-shirts, not my size, that I can use to make something for myself as a keepsake.
And still be able to wear a part of her with you. Like maybe use them to make numerous things as gifts, and distribute them among her family members. Maybe even sew in her intials or something that was her signature icon, name, a symbol, a heart etc. Anything sewn into each of the things you make that's in memory of her for all of the loved ones. I've seen where brides would have a small patch of material shaped into a small heart that was from a deceased loved ones favorite shirt or whatnot, sewn somewhere onto their wedding dress. I thought it was a nice loving idea.
Another thing you could do with em, after turning them into yarn, make a blanket using a pattern that'll make it look a lot like a quilt. Maybe add some pictures to some of the parts etc? It's just an idea. Make it a family crochet quilt or something.

Thank you! I love that you did not waste the top of the shirt! I have been making net bags using a fisherman type netting technique. This should work great with netting to make shopping bags.
Dear friend. First of all I thank you for making this vedio. I am giving you one idea of making mop. You buy sticks and round ring with scerw from hardware shops. With the help of ring with screws you fix the T shirt. Your big piece cutting or neck cutting is ok for making round mop. You can also make horizontal. You buy one mop with only rubber at the base used for removal of water. You buy scew with round head and two sides opening used for fixing electricity wires. You male and female strips used by tailor. You take Male strips...... and fix it on horizontal mop with help of screws with two sides opening. Female strips you stichTshirt cutting larger size which you have cut. You can remove your mop very quickly because handling male female strips is easy . You can keep aside and put another Tshirt mop on the same stick. The cleaning process will be better , easier and faster. Rest you know. You are too much artistic. My English is not good. Please try to understand what I want to say. Namh shivay. Dear friend. I will happy when you will make vedio on this topic. I am giving one idea for making dust pan. You take 20 liter or 10 liter or 5 liter plastic drum as per as requirement. You cut it give shape of dust pan. You buy screws with nut and take one wooden stick of desired requirement. Fix this wood to plastic dust pan using screws with nut bolt. Why I am suggesting nut bolt because with time it gets loosened, If ever it gets loosened you can fix it. Namh shivay.
Thank-you so much. You were very precise in how to properly cut the t-shirt with almost no waste. The best I have seen so far (and I have looked at many videos on 'how to' do this). Thanks for showing us how and sharing your time and talent with all of us. I love to crochet with t-shirt yarn. The music was fun and light ... not to loud ... I could hear everything you said.

Now that was truly a fabulous earth saving way to Upcycle something that most consider waste into something so rewarding, I’m impressed!
Thak you so much for your kind commen Miranda. Have a wonderful day. - Jane
You can still use the rest to fill up knitted dolls 🤷♀️
Love you "sweater". Did you make it? If so what pattern is it.
@@arlenecampbell3851 Thanks, Arlene! I didn't make it, no, I bought it from Zara a few seasons ago.
Great idea! Thank you.
This is a great idea!
@@arlenecampbell3851 hello! Sorry for the delay in responding. We don't have the pattern unfortunately. I bought it at Zara a few seasons ago. - Sonja
Praise the Lord! I'm so glad that I happened upon your video. I've always wanted to crochet some rag rugs for in front of my kitchen sink but I actually thought that you had to sew each end together! Finding your video is like Christmas morning. Now I can't wait to make my rug. I'm going to Goodwill in the morning and get about 7 t-shirts, each a different color and get busy making a "rug of many colors". Thx so much for teaching this old dawg a new trick! 😄 God bless you!
This is genius! I use the hems and neck for headbands and ponytail holders.
So smart! We never have enough ponytail holders with four girls in the house. -Jane
Great idea to use these tshirts that are no longer good for wearing. That yarn would make a great sweater to wear as it would be all soooo confortable!!! Tks!!!
Great idea!
The ultimate recycling, and - relatively - easy! Thank you very much!!!
Our pleasure! THank you for watching.
The a BEST T-shirt yarn video!!! Because you didn’t waste any shirt
Thank you so much Lashae! We really appreciate your kind comment. -Jane
Sustain My Craft Habit ❤️
I wish all vid makers were as efficient as you; thanks so much! I've made Tarn (t-shirt yarn) and leave the goofy ends on the Tarn to more or less create a fringe effect, country-style.....once crocheted or knitted, etc., any too goofy ends can be trimmed out.
Thank you so much Donna for your kind comment. We've also found that those goofy ends aren't too noticeable in the final project. -Jane
Very good idea! I used the sleeves as a cleaning rag.
That's actually a really good idea! Let's hope some other people see this comment and get inspired too :)
you got the most out of a T-shirt i have seen so far. thank you. i am off to find my stash of T's and get cutting.
We really tried Hazel! Seems such a shame to throw away perfectly good fabric. Thank you for your kind comment.
I'm really excited I came across this video. I was looking into purchasing some t-shirt yarn. Now, I can probably make some if I have spares lying around. Thanks.
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much for this video! So easy to follow and extremely practical. I made some streamers from coloured t-shirts I got from the thrift store. Yay for upcycling! One day I hope to make the famous braided floor rug.. one day..
So glad you found it helpful! Yes, the braided floor rug would be fabulous. Thank you so much for stopping by. -Jane
Love this, especially using the whole t shirt in a continuous strip!! Thanks for the demonstration! ❤
Here is an idea for using the rib eye neck piece once you have trimmed it away. It's perfect for a headband for yourself or your daughters. You can even sew buttons or other cute accessories on it.
Love that idea, especially embellishing with buttons or flowers! Thank you for sharing. -Jane
Where are the instructions & video? I am interested in making headbands from the ribbed t-shirt necks. Thanks!
Thank you. You just gave me a whole new way to use shirts rather than throwing then away. 😁👍👍👍
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you for a high-quality video and easy-going tone. Very watchable.
Great explanation and I was going to rant about the annoying muzak but i see you've addressed that! Thanks!
GREAT IDEA FOR MY OLD T SHIRTS WITH STAINS!!! This was very gratifying and satisfying to watch you do. Thank you so very much for sharing your wonderful Ideas and Talents. I'm a newbie & I find it SOOOOO VERY difficult to learn to learn Needle work/ Crochet .. Its a pity because I truly love the Art and craft of it.. I wont give up! I will continue to try to perfect this needle work technique.
Hee-hee, She said, "woo-hoo!" LOL I'm just as happy as you are, girl !
This is fantastic! Thank you so much for this video. I've got a lot of t-shirts that don't fit me any more and I'm excited to be able to make rugs from them! Maybe I'll try making a bathmat!
That sounds so fun! We're glad you found this useful!
I almost gave up trying to me t-shirt yarn I've watched a lot of tutorials but everytime I try it I fail. But this time I MADE IT finally thanks to your easy and clear instructions and video. Thanks a million I just made my first ball of tee-shirt yarn. You are the best
Yay!!! We're so happy to hear this. You just made our day. Did you have a chance to make anything with the yarn yet? -Jane
@@Sustainmycrafthabit not yet but I will be happy to share with what I will make. Thanks for your efforts again
I always wondered how people made this hard! Satisfying to watch!
I used to know a lady that made huge rag rugs out of her husbands old suits. She had some kind of small machine that would make the long strips for her.

Finally! Thank you for clearly explaining how to cut the t-shirt but also the sleeves and the topmost part! 😊 hooray now I can confidently commence my tshirt yarn🎉
You are so welcome! Thank you for the kind comment. -Jane
Awesome!
I'd probably get confused where I was cutting and end up with a bunch of strips instead of continuous string lol!
But definitely going to do this one day.
I've seen lots of people who make t-shirt yarn and this is the best video for making it because of the least amount of waste. Others just toss it and don't take the time to get the most of the t-shirt. Thank you for this video
Thank you so much Roberta for your kind comments! We're so happy you've found this video helpful. We hope you're having a wonderful weekend.
I just found this video! So excited! I am in the process of gathering t-shirts for a rug and I love your method of using the whole shirt! I know how I will be cutting my shirts from now on!
My husband has a ton of old shirts from his work. I think I’ll use this trick to make them into yarn to make a new area rug.
Some intricate cutting there, but totally amazing! Can't wait to make a bathroom rug... :)
Awesome. I’m gonna teach my grandchildren. 😊
Wonderful! Thank you for watching. -Jane
Thanks!! My husband finally cleared his closet before we move and I snapped two XL tshirts he never used, he was going to take them to the recycling center! I'm going to get a lot of yarn out of them😁
Yes! So many crafting possibilities :) -Jane
I also don't like wasting, I learnt a lot from the video.thank you for sharing ❤
Thanks for watching!
How could anyone possibly thumbs down this video...?????.....🤔
Thank you kindly, we're glad you enjoyed it :)
The background music is why I gave it a 👎!
Hi it's Janice from Malta . Thanks for showing us how to do our own t shirts yarn .
Much appreciated.
I have a few high school shirts that I think I'm going to do this to. They have sentimental value so I dont want to just throw them out, but I also have nowhere in my drawers for them anymore. I can knit them in with some other sentimental shirts and make a variant of a milestone quilt.
Absolutely! Such a great idea. Not sure if you saw this, but we have over 20 different t-shirt yarn projects in this post in case you're stuck for ideas: sustainmycrafthabit.com/top-20-tshirt-yarn-projects/ . Hope this helps! -Jane
Well this makes it a little easier. It was taking me forever.
So glad you found it helpful Jeanie! -Jane
Thank you for sharing . . . I have so many t-shirts I use them for cleaning, but love your idea the most. . . .😊
Our pleasure Mari! We hope you'll get to make something pretty with them :D -Jane
It’s really very practical, some T-shirt’s fabric is really very good we don’t want to throw ,it’s nice way to reuse .
Yes 😊
A GREAT IDEA! RECYCLE & REUSE FACTOR.
Very clear demonstration, Thank you
Our pleasure! Happy holidays. -Jane
An excellent job on showing us how. Thank you.
This is the best video for this technique. Very little waste. Thank you so much. .
This is so cool I love upcycling and recycling!!
Thank you so much! I’m going to start hooking rugs with T-shirts. This has been tremendously helpful.
You are so welcome! We made a rag rug with the tshirt yarn - it's so soft and squishy: sustainmycrafthabit.com/diy-rag-rug-how-to-finger-crochet-a-circular-t-shirt-rug/ -Jane
I was weighting my options to buy or to diy and you used the whole shirt instead of just the bottom part. Also up pops a little finger on the work table.😁 Cute. Anywhos, thanks for the tutorial ma'am.💜🖖🏽
Thank you! I love that you did not waste the top of the shirt! I have been making net bags using a fisherman type netting technique. This should work great with netting to make shopping bags.
Yes, absolutely! Would be great because the t-shirt yarn has a bit of stretch. Thank you for your kind words!!! -Jane
It's the same method as making continuous bias tape. Good thinking.
Thank you! -Jane
Now I can use the t-shirt yarn for ties for the face masks that are becoming so stylish and necessary to wear! Thank you.
Great idea! We're going to be using them as well! Stay safe Stephanie. -Jane
Why I am suggesting nut bolt because with time it gets loosened,
If ever it gets loosened you can fix it.
Namh shivay.
This is such a great idea! Thank you so much for sharing it. Have a wonderful day! -Jane
Wauuuu was für eine super Idee. Ich muss es unbedingt ausprobieren. ❤️lichen Dank für dein tolles Video und das du deine Idee allen zeigst. Viele liebe Grüße Stella ❤️😘 🌻
Love Aqua and Turquoise. They are like a dip in the ocean!
You are so intelligent 🤠🤠🤠...I will recycle many t shirts...thanks and saludos desde Bolivia 🇧🇴🇧🇴🇧🇴😎😎😎😉😉😉😘😘😘
I love this! I’m going to have to do this with my Girl Scouts. We do a lot of reuse and recycle projects.
Thank you so much! We're glad you found it helpful, this made our day. This is a great lesson for the kids too.
