Bob, I just spoke with Mr Geist. He is still having problems with his website and he asked that everyone be patient. I did however get my jig ordered. Looking forward to cutting new blanks. You suggested using it in many different ways. Thank you for the information on new Products. Thank you for sharing how to set it up.
Thanks Bob, I called Tim, as you suggested. Boy did he send me a great deal. I got this cutting jig, centerless bushings, and the pen sanding jig. My wife said I couldn’t call for awhile now. (Time out for me) But I’m in the shop.😃
Thank you Donald, I have been dying to put it together and use it. When I had the time, I knew I needed to do it. I only wish I had mentioned that Tim will be at the gathering. I wish I was going to be there. Tell him you saw the video when you talk to him. I want him to know his products are awesome and that’s why I share them. Regards, Bob
Thank you for showing this jig and it’s nice to see new videos. I am sure you are happy to be spending some time in the shop. Just a thought. I made my own version and made a second block to put on the backside of the spacer to hold the spacer tight against the tube. It keeps the spacer in place better and when doing multiple cuts with the same tube the setup stays in place better. (P.s. my first ever you tube comment)
Thank you Michael, I am honored that your first RUclips comment was on one of my videos. I also appreciate hearing about the jig you made and the extra piece for holding everything in place. Regards, Bob
Great Jig! Just contacted Tim and ordered one. Was looking at the Penn State Industries jig on RUclips and your video popped up. Glad it did as this jig is smaller and more efficient, very clever! And I like to support local made in USA businesses, I would guess the PSI jig is made overseas! Enjoy your channel, must have missed this video of 2 years ago! :-)
Tim Geist makes good pen making tools. I may buy this blank cutting jig, although I've managed to do quite nicely just cutting the blanks freehand on my bandsaw. I do hobby work one pen at a time once in a long while and thus cutting speed isn't important. I also have a Tim Geist copy of the Paul Huffman pen drilling vise. I like the Geist copy a little better because the threads are smoother and have less slop and the jaws have greater capacity.
@@RJBWoodTurner This is a great video. I have been searching all the comments for a link to order the jig but cannot find it. Can you PLEASE send or repost the link? Thanks in Advance.
Tim sent me one and it arrived today and I love the Made in the USA sticker. I told Tim I ordered it because of your video so thanks. I believe it will save me a lot of time and pay for the $39.00 cost which includes shipping
You will love the jig, I use mine on almost every blank I cut. Where it will really save you time is batching out blanks for a large order of a show. Thank you for mentioning my name to Tim. Regards, Bob
Ordered one today. I asked Tim about the sanding jig he made and he informed me that he believes you made a video on them but I could not locate it.Could you link that to me. Thanks
I got one as well. I also had to get a new bandsaw so I haven't set it up yet on the new one. Very clean setup instructions thanks. Will I see you at the Ohio pen gathering again this year?
A really neat jig, really like that you use your mitre gauge to lock the jig in place. Price is Ok but shipping to the UK is expensive. Will need to make one myself. I like the track that Tim has used so you can position blocks on both sides, do you know what this track is called?
@@RJBWoodTurner Hi Bob, thanks for the reply. I guessed it was T-track but as it is double sided does it have a particular name? I have not been able to find that kind of track on the Web, any clues would be great, thanks.
There are some really simple designs you can make yourself. Just search RUclips for "pen blank sizing jig". The instructions I made even listed in the recommended videos of this video. I made mine from all from scrap wood except for the premade knob.
I just use a stop block on the miter saw ;). I have a bandsaw but the miter saw is right by the lathe the bandsaw is in a different shop so not very practical HAHA.
That looks like a fun DIY shop project that I may build myself at some point. I have been thinking about getting a small benchtop bandsaw for the shop as my large one is just way too big to fit in the little shed I have all my pen making stuff and tools in. I've got a couple pen orders I need to get started here soon too, just waiting on some of my component stuff to show up and for the customers to decide what they want for pen bodies, then I'll get them done and out of the way and onto some other shop need-to-do stuff HAHA!!
Hi Bob . That works really well . Gives me a idea to make something similar for my table saw . Still looks hot there . Their calling for a frost here to night . Take care.
Hi Bob, looks like you have got a nice new bandsaw ,that should help you a lot, especially with your nice new cutting Jig , noticed you are only leaving a 1/16 of a inch spare on the end of the blank, you might find you need to leave at least 1/8 of an inch at the end of the blank with so you have 1/16 of an inch at each end for when you are truing it up square with you barrel trimmer ,just a though, Regards from Jolly ☠️ Roger.
Miss Tee's Woodturning , Hi Miss Tees well spotted ,it should read 1/8 inch at the end of the blank which would then leave At least 1/16 of an inch at each end. I have now amended this. When I cut my blanks I tend to leave them at least 1/4 inch long, to allow for breakout when drilling, and squaring them up with the barrel trimmer. Have a nice 👍 day, Roger and out.

Will it work with a table saw
I’d be kind of nervous about using it with a table saw unless you added a hold down for the blank.

@@RJBWoodTurner where could I put the hold down, will it fit in any band saw
I went and looked at it and It’s to small. You’d have to make a home made one. You need to keep those fingers safe.
I just marked the blank and with mitre saw one stroke and voila.
Thank you.

It cooled off today because we’re getting rein from the hurricane. It’s still humid.

A pen blank is a block of wood that we use to turn a pen from.
