A worldclass player. Outstanding technique and fantastic licks. Only a few can reach this level of playing in a lifetime. He gets a lot of (deserved) respect from professional guitarists
Ulf is one of the best guitarists out there. He's been playing for years with Oscar Peterson. A lot of you can post their videos and we can see how good you are so we can judge you as well. It's so easy to talk shit behind your keyboard.
I agree Cliff but i also agree with the lack of good timing , i know what i'm talking abt because i myself neglected for too long this important side of playing ! (still working on it ! )
Cliff he is indeed a great player however the unforgiving nature of a direct recording doesn't present him in the best light.
Awesome job, Ulf! Cool licks and feeling!
I could notice a Pat Martino influence there! Love it!
Wow! Love the intervallic/rhythmical diverse type lines ! Awesome !
Absolutely stunning sir.Love it
Maybe if he spent more time writing pissy comments on RUclips he could be a great guitar player like some of you guys.
Très belle version de Sunny !! Merci de ce partage !
Killer job! My friend that was great.
Simply amazing!!!
Superb mastery!
Loved it.
Wow, how classy is this version of the head !
tres pat martino , bravo !!!
Reminds me a little of Bireli Lagrene, the way he plays with such abandon
Très inspirant . bravo !!
Great Ulf 💣💣💣
His improvised solo was reminiscent of Oscar Peterson's piano. Incredible musician!
A well known Top player among theJazz guitar "Family".
❤️🎶❤️ wow 😲 so good 👍 👏👏👏 thanks 🙏🙏🙏
If this version he played, will be played in a party, I bet EVERYONE will be dancing!
COOL from Hamburg / Germany
Exciting lines. 1 foot in the Martino camp and the other a little more fusion like. It seems like he's showing a couple different approaches vs. locking in and jamming out. As for the age old argument of straying from the melody in mid to uptempo tunes, the strict melodic embellishment style ended around the Dixieland maybe swing era. Sonny Stitt, Parker, Don Byas,, Martino et al really play the melody and then work the changes return to the melody and out. I'll definitely transcribe a couple of these lines.
nice collection of licks
Outstanding guitarist !
Great Great Great✌️
I can hear a lot of Pat Martino ..
Yeah there are some blatant Martino licks but much more Benson. Either way he is a monster!
@@otnas001 Agreed - lots of Benson influence (no complaints about that).
nice
super ,
I think there’s a slight delay between the backing track and his playing. A mistake in post production
2:14 nice kinda of fourhs arpegios shifted arround the pitch of diminished scale.
Am I right?
May it be major seventh arpegios beginning on their fifth and shifted in paralell up and down in minor thirds. Nice lick.
Фирмач.Респект!
sweet
Cool! Great playing….what brand guitar is that?
Benedetto
Benedetto Bambino
Monster!
👍👍👍👍👍💖
Sounds like a few of Wes Montgomery's octave licks in the theme.
Unfortunately his playing in octaves sounds stiffly . Far from Wes ' wide
and deep tone .
Thumbs up for anyone who caught the Bireli Lagrene lick at 1:42 !
that's a very standard bebop lick that predates Bireli's birth!
I heard rather a very heavy influence of Pat Martino here!
Not Birellis lick.
remijazz Yes definitely heard a lot of Pat Martino especially the single string soloing around the 2:40 - 3:00 ish time.
Honestly I'm not gonna lie but I hear a lot of grant green in this. Like a lot. A lot benson and pat as well but still killin
chromaticisms and great atonal licks. Defiinitely has his own note choices! Critical thinking at nice times and not just a mindless technical clone!
OH YEAH :
I love Greg Howe's Fusion version .. !
I only recently discovered Ulf, from a Brecker concert he played. Fantastic player. There are so many great musicians now and throughout history, it boggles the mind.
Just an aside: I have wondered before why jazz players who do "Sunny" as a blowing tune, don't modulate up a half step every chorus, like the original vocal hit by Bobby Hebb. I myself have played this tune several times & could not get the other players interested in doing that. Why not? It is a fun gimmick.
bc it's cheesy
You can here him here in a full concert with Michael Brecker : ruclips.net/video/BMDqqECWNXE/видео.html
diggit !!
+
1:33 made me laugh
those who dislike this must be better...i doubt that very much...just jealous..hahaha
To all the h8rz: there's either some kind of latency issue in these DC recordings, or Ulf was drunk. Listen to his impeccable time and incredible musicality throughout this clip of him playing Moment's Notice with Larry Coryell ruclips.net/video/fKMaksmMdx4/видео.html
I DID AND ......and "impeccable time and incredible musicality" .was there!!!.......You have made a great point.
Tommy Emmanuel Lee Ritenour Joe Pass Ulf Wakenius is in their own class.
@ 4:06 singer's crack voice comes up.
Sloppy in some parts, but good enough..
There is a difference between playing outside and sounding like you are in the wrong key.
someone had to say it eventually haha
Where is the part with wrong scale?
Something missing . Slight tempo out . A collection of licks stumbling around looking for a groove . He seems impressed though
Not enough melody
A rough and loud Wes....
ruclips.net/video/bLFemZCj6CE/видео.html
Seems to be a lot of pick noise and other non-musical thumping during the head.
Want to like it but there is no groove at all. Many precipitated lines, octaves are harsh, timing is just not there.
becraul. I do the same thing when I'm showing people certain things to play over a set of chord changes. if you see the videos of this guy in a performance setting you'll realize that all he's doing here is making it easier for the student of jazz 2 learn something by listening and watching this video
Frankly speaking, I believe there is a problem with the synch of the recording. I don't believe a player of this level plays out of time in this way.
Maybe he’s a great guitarist. But everyone defending him and getting all mad. You have to objectively hear the sloppy fingering. He’s really not enunciating the notes clearly. kind of whiffs some of them and plays in a sort of harsh, halted manner. I don’t have to be king of the guitar to see that and neither do you. Maybe it’s just in this video, and he’s great everywhere else. But we all have to be hearing the same thing here
Octaves ideally are to be played with the thumb unless you are a rock guitarist. I get bored hearing so many "out of the box" descending lines that don't correspond or remotely connect to the tonality at hand; just a dissonant cacophony of notes...a problem with many modern jazz guitarists. Sure do it with your own material (can't say I'd buy it) but "Sunny" has beautifully crafted chord progressions and I'd a masterpiece song (I was around when it came out) and the melodic lines should reflect this. Too bad, his playing has a nice bluesy influence at times but even then it feels like some kind of perfunctory lip service since it never lasts longer than a few seconds; a better organized approach would create coherent melody lines. Btw/ the original "Sunny" has several fascinating half step ascending key changes missing out here as well.
You guys must be kid'n... y'all sound like a bunch of jealous music snobs ! Jazz is about self expression and that's the way that man chose to express himself at that moment in time, hear him play the same song a week later and he might take a totally different approach.. it is spontaneous improvisation... he took it outside and It sounds good to me - if it was good enough for Oscar Peterson..I mean c'mon man...finally if you play better than this guy you're welcome to post a clip of you playing in a comment... can't believe you guys are knocking this guy...smh...
thats the problem with academic jazz musicians...everything has to be cookie cutter perfect by CLASSICAL music theory standards. If you want that then go listen to classical music and leave jazz alone. Your ears aren't strong enough.
Before you comment why don't you Google his name. You'll find the list of world class jazz musicians Ulf has worked with over he's lengthy career. You don't get to develop a career and discography like his by being a hack player you're talking about.
Why are octaves ideally played with the thumb? Wes? You do know that Django and Charlie and Raney and Tal and Barney didn't use their thumbs for octaves? Apart for that, octaves are ridiculous choice for improvising at any length because you just don't have the same flexibilities as you do with a single line approach. Parker and Coltrane, and Louis and Lester never played octaves. It's a silly gimmick.
@@musik102 yeah, saying that "idealy octaves should be played with the thumb" is a stupid thing but... dude a saxophone is a monophonic instrument like of course coltrane and parker never played octaves, they literally CAN'T
