Then, like Mexicans looking for work in a Home Depot parking lot, they all pile in back and I drive them to the top again. Yep...too many times to count..
These were great looking pickups. Went the length of BC in my dad's Apache all the way to Lower Post back in 1959. I was 10. Must have fished every bridge along the way. Damn! That was some adventure.

Yea I live in Colorado Springs right on the base of pikes peak. I got a $350 ticket for driving 10 feet off the road in a mud pit 10000 people had obviously gone through before me they said it was protected wetlands.
Yeah those trucks were really tough. They had heavy gauge steel bodies and stong frames, those narrow off-road tires for traction, and super low granny gear for climbing.
I took my 69 plymouth to a mopar dealer, and told him id buy a new car if he could do what im going to do. I junped right on the hood and stood on it and it didnt budge. I left without a new car. I plan on doing the same thing with my 55 chevy truck when i get a new motor in it.

Mechanically they’re much better , except for the weak crappy front IFS ,, but theres not enough bumper or ground clearance to drive through a small ditch in a cow pasture . It’s pathetic . A standard 1500 Chevy 4x4 would look like it’s been in a crash up derby by the time it made it to the top . Ground clearance Chevy ,, give us some !! ,, and raise that front bumper up off the ground

I use to work for a tree hugger, nothing less in a DoD company in Colorado Springs. I was told that if I cared for my job that I curtail my 4x4 activities during my own time ! On this video, I watched it one time long time ago on ch 18 on Colorado Springs Cable - PPLD channel. It was cool.

I think they build them way better now, I like the look of the old classics for sure but they do not compare performance wise even remotely to a modern truck. back then if you got 50,000 miles out of an engine before having to rebuild it you were doing good, plus constant maintenance was required, modern trucks drive 300,000 miles or more before they are used up and need a new engine .
1978 I was a young man working on a ranch in eastern Oregon. They had a1963 chev pickup 1/2 ton 4x4 we named Pete. 6 cylinder engine, fat bed. It was our fence building truck. We would climb up ravines over boulders in low/ low 4x4 anywhere we needed. Amazing power and gearing.
I would love to see Chevrolet bring back these old fetes to show the toughness of Chevrolet and General Motors Corp. Carrying a pickup in the bed of a pickup while going up a hill in rocks...classic!!!! This would be a tribute to 100 years of accomplishment

The north one at Cheyenne Canyon was closed 25 yrs ago because of high matainance costs from flood washouts. Still good access to south face Pikes from Deer Park and Eagle Rock area back roads where this vidio was made.
Nope... I live very close to Pikes Peak. My home faces the mountain from the top of another mountain about 10 miles away, and on clear days, I see Pikes Peak from my living room. The entire mountain is managed by the US Forest Service. You have to pay $10 per person just to drive up the paved highway to the top now, and have to be off the mountain by 5pm, or earlier depending on the time of year. It's especially beautiful when coated in snow. They keep the paved highway clear of snow most days of the year, but it's occasionally closed due to heavy snows and ice. It is a money maker for Colorado Springs, the USFS, and Manitou Springs. It gets really crowded at the top during the summer. Climbers climb it pretty much every day of the year, but they also have limits on hours when they can even be on the mountain, or get huge fines. Yes. They have a few man made water reservoirs up there, and a Visitor center and gift shop at the top, and a massive new one is being constructed right now... But no residences, malls, etc. There is one small lodge about 2 or 3 miles from the top... Hard to get into.

The 55, 56 and 57 chevy pickups are some good looking trucks. Solid , simple and easy to keep on the road. I know they can't make them like that anymore with all the regulations. Vehicles today are complicated with too much emphasis on luxury.
Same here.. Had a '54 & '65 Chevy pickup. My friend in Stockton has a '59 Chevy pu, original paint survivor. He has a dual range overdrive installed. Runs down the highway much better now.
Have you watched the iihs crash test’s old verses new? If so you would never drive anything older than 2005 those old cars and trucks fold up like there made from soda cans.
@@dangreving1094 you are correct. I watched a 2009 Chevy vs a 1959. There was maybe 300 lbs difference in weight and the 59 was demolished. The 09, demolished, but the driver would fair much better than if he had been in the 59.

Grandpa's old truck has a clear advantage over the luxurious new rides we see out there today. it's rated at 1/2 ton but I personally have seen it deliver 7,500 lbs of scrap metal between the bed and a small single axle trailer that is not including the truck and trailer weight!
Ref. Pike's Peak road was started in 1888. It was dirt. It was hard packed and improved in 1915. packable rock imported I'm guessing. Natural granite chip rock doesn't pack well. Prior to 2011 the road was asphalt just the bottom half. top half was crushed stone but smooth and very wide and safe.. Full asphalt to top in 2011. FTR no pedal bikes were ever allowed but you can take your Mtn bike to the top in someone's vehicle and enjoy a 12 mile brutal ride down on Barr Trail the hiking trail. You will be on your brakes most of the ride down.

Ref. Pike's Peak road was started in 1888. It was dirt.
It was hard packed and improved in 1915. packable rock imported I'm guessing. Natural granite chip rock doesn't pack well.
Prior to 2011 the road was asphalt just the bottom half. top half was crushed stone but smooth and very wide and safe.. Full asphalt to top in 2011.
FTR no pedal bikes were ever allowed but you can take your Mtn bike to the top in someone's vehicle and enjoy a 12 mile brutal ride down on Barr Trail the hiking trail. You will be on your brakes most of the ride down.
