When I was a kid I brought a Sega Master System 2, which had Alex Kidd In Miracle World as a built in game. It was the first game I ever completed. I will be buying this in about an hour from now.

After working my way through Kaze and the Wild Masks Alex Kid will be my next platformer.

I used to play the original game a lot when I was a kid, so I was hyped for this remake. I didn't remember much of it, other than the fact that I loved it.
This remake looks and sounds absolutely gorgeous, but I expected a remake that was a bit more accessible. Like you said, the controls feel very slippery, making precision platforming harder than it should be. And there seems to be a bit of input lag, making it even harder.
Then there's the "infinite lives" situation. I appreciate that it's there, but using it completely disables earning achievements/trophies, which makes me refuse to use it. Getting a game over makes you lose all your money, so it makes dying even more punishing, because no money means no buying support items from the store to help you on your run. Items you sometimes really need, like the bike (ex. the Forest level without the bike is not a great experience).
I really wanted to love this remake, but I think these classic punishing games aren't for me anymore. I was hoping for a bit more accesibility, like an easy mode and tighter controls, but it is what it is. A great game, just not for me.

The game is really a much better play with infinite lives because the difficulty feels too unfair like you say. Mega Man 11 is very hard retro gameplay too, however the controls are much better, they are very tight, it feels fair, when you die it feels like your fault, you can get a lot better with practise and the game is designed around this, Alex Kidd I never improved much even after playing through the whole game twice. With Mega Man I died over and over on the first level but i kept going with the recommended difficulty instead of droping it. Later on I was even completing levels and bosses on the first try which is mad. Not only that but the shops exist outside of the levels and you never lose your money so you can grind for power ups and lives, so the game is desigend around its hard difficult and the idea of dying, unlike Alex Kidd. The lack of level select is really ridiculous as well, a game with collectibles like this, needs to have back tracking! I still think its great for what it is, and worth playing Im playing on Switch so the trophies arent relevant to me.

Nice review, I've still got my Mastersystem with Alex Kidd built in, haven't played you years, decades even, Haven't completed yet but so far remember the Jenken order of beating the bosses, I like the pixles art and updated graphics, only thing is the controls have regressed, and taken a step back rather than forwards and tightening the controls

I find it odd that the remake is so washed out? The original pops a lot more and has a distinct style. This looks generic and bland to me.

@@MarquisDeSang I have the physical version too. There's no need to mention a lack of a feature that *does* exist in the game. If he said it didn't auto save he'd be lying.
