Sigma FP - Stress Test (4K)

- This was a little test I shot while in Boston a few months ago. I wanted to almost break the image straight out of the camera and see if it could be saved using the RAW format. All of these shots had no ND filter, a very high F stop, and the shutter cranked well over 1/500. I am no expert color grade artist but I am shocked the FP held on to that much dynamic range.

This is so brilliant and I love how you’ve brought back the hidden details in the shadows, really making creative use of the RAW capabilities of SIGMA fp. I subscribed after seeing this.
Thank you so much Suchet! The FP if used at its dual iso (100 or 3200) properly can give you very flexible results. At ISO 100 you get a ton of stops in the shadows but only a few in the highlights and vice versa with ISO 3200. This gives you a lot of options on how you want your shot set up lighting wise.
Dynamic Range is crazy
Man, I have the chance to pick one of these up for a good price! I am so tempted. I don't think many people know the power of this little beast.
You should! The FP rocks!
Love your work my man. I know for a fact I'm not ready for RAW workflow just yet, but this is truly an amazing video selling it well.
The dynamic range is ridiculous...in a good way :) Nice Video. Thank you.
Thanks Scott! The dynamic range in this camera is definitely more than enough for most shooters. I can't wait to see what HDR 4k will look like on the FP this summer!
Awesome in many ways!
I've owned the Sigma fp for a couple of months now. Bought it to film concerts, but seems now I'm just documenting moments from the NY area COVID-19 reality. I'm still shooting in 8-bit .MOV but hoping to get a Samsung T5 to work with 12bit 4K soon!!!
Thanks Erik! Oh man you will love the 12bit 4k! The 8 bit is not bad by any means but the room you have in 12 bit almost seems unlimited.
@@arthurtaylor8726 just finished this. Haha, well maybe I finished it. Notes are included.

I have just ordered tihs gorgeous compact full frame camera 4K 12 bit raw
That is awesome! You will love it!
This probably is the best examples of the how far you can stretch the RAW images I've seen. What was your workflow in processing the clips (Cinema DNG?)
Thanks Chrome Dome! I import them through Adobe Camera Raw (basically Lightroom for raw video), make my exposure and color adjustments, then it imports in to After Effects, then I change the framework to 24fps and it's ready to play with. This camera is excellent but its basically totally manual (almost like a film camera). You can't playback any raw footage in cam (for now) and the AF is so bad I tell people it doesn't have AF.
@@arthurtaylor8726 сделай видео урок.
Awesome!
Thanks Akhtar!
Very interesting. I’d like to ask a question. How did you expose the footage? I heard that the histrogram doesn’t cover the full dynamic range, thus will show clipping even two stops before the effective loss in signal. Maybe the new firmware has solved some issues. What about your experience so far?
I have honestly never had an issue with exposure on the FP. I just put my histogram up, make sure I don't over expose, and it usually works out fine. In this video example you can see I was easily 2-3 stops over exposed (on purpose) and the Sigma uncompressed RAW was able to bring it down later in Resolve.
Hi Arthur, great video, thank you for sharing! What color/profile did you use in the camera to capture the video and what editing app did you do the color grading in? Footage looks beautiful 😍😊😍
Thanks Android! I shot this in 12 bit RAW DNG 24fps (normal profile) then imported in to Adobe After Effects and the color was edited with Adobe Camera RAW. :)
Man this is impressive. It's crazy that it edits just like a photo in lightroom. I have been looking heavily into buying this camera exactly for the editing leeway it has, not to mention its flawless image quality. I think my only worry is shaky footage because I gots some shakey hands and there is no ibis. I'm also trying to figure out if I want the new Fp L or the original....
Thanks Laplanet Arts! It is exactly how you describe it, picture how you edit raws in lightroom but now as video. It definitely can get shakey and with no ibis (as you said) it doesn't make life any easier. The camera is basically a manual focus camera too (the af is really bad). The only thing I can say to guide you if you want it or not is to ask, what do you intend on filming? If you want to do music videos, shorts, features, docus, etc the FP is great. If you want to do more run and gun stuff or live events the FP is doable but not easy to use for those gigs. The weather here is getting better and lockdown is over so I will get back out there to give you guys more types of footage to play with. I'll try not to underexpose too much next time. :)
the first image is always raw and with no edit ? black level looks edited. pretty high contrast for out of the cam raw
Definitely not edited. That is what it looks like right out of the camera imported in to Adobe RAW.
Damn this video will cost me 2k USD
Seems fast shutter speed doesn't quite affect the smoothness of the footage?
May I know How many stops did you over/under expose?
Good work with Adobe Camera RAW. The green channel bulges slightly. Please give us the raw footage ;)
Thank you Apceh! I know the grade I went with definitely favors the green/side of the image and I wanted to tone it down before the upload but didn't feel like waiting for another render. I will do my best to get a couple RAW download links up here (they can get quite large). Just remember I shot this way on purpose to try and break the image but if I shot with the proper settings the quality increase is quite a bit. This still retains good quality but properly exposed Sigma FP footage is crazy good.
Was this recorded internally 8 bit CDNG or external?
This was recorded in 12 bit CDNG to an external SSD.
Ahh, thanks, looks 👍
What about HDR video and Fill light features? Have you tried those?.
I have not messed with those yet but I am eager to try them! It has just been very hot here lately so I am waiting for a cool day to go shoot those features.
dont know why but all the footages with this camera are beautiful but they have somehing with the motion, maybe is the shutter, but the motion seems to be faster, or less smoother than a BMPCC for instance. do you see that? another thing, the image are extra sharp, i recomend to reduce the contrast in order to look more "arri style"
For this video and past videos that was my fault because I didn't tell the program to interpret the footage at 24fps so it had it at 30fps instead. If you watch my newest video the motion looks much more natural. I like to go a bit heavy on sharpness but you are right if it is toned down a bit it will come off more cinematic. :)
Arthur Taylor thanx Arthur! Keep on filming!
can you please share one of the clips to try color grade it? thank you, also what do u think of the autofocus ?
I will do my best to share. The hard part is the RAW folder per shot is very large (around 14-20gb per folder). Would it be easier to just flatten it and then share that footage?
Can you mention the lens you have used?
Looks like Paul Verhoeven's movie grading style.
Thank you sir! I am still finding my way with color grading footage.
Looks great! What lens was used? Any recommendations? Was thinking about this combo with Voigtlander 40mm 1.2
Thank you Rasheed! I used the Nikkor 50mm f1.8 with an adapter for all of these shots. I would 100% recommend the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens! I do not own it yet and its expensive (around $1k) but it is very sharp and covers a wide range of focal lengths.
@@arthurtaylor8726 I just got that camera and luckily I had that 24-70 lens from my Canon camera. I hope I can get control of it's Raw half the way you do. Fabulous, you have a new subscriber.
@@JuanAntonioAlarcon Thank you! That is awesome congrats! You will definitely love it. That is a great lens for this camera. You'll def get the hang of CDNG RAW for sure.
@@arthurtaylor8726 Which adapter did you use for the Nikon lens? Great video. Thanks!
Did you shoot on SSD or NINJA.
External SSD 1TB Samsung T5
One more question is exposing the image very difficult? And the post processing very difficult?
I want it for my indie film.
@Nikoloz Gabedava Shooting with the Sigma isn't difficult, but you have to know the exposure boundaries. Once you know the rules, it's pretty easy. The FPs huge strength is post production. You have a TON of flexibility in post and can push your footage quite far. A few things to note if using this as the main cam on an indie movie, you will need quite a few ssds (a 1tb ssd shooting in 12bit 4k raw will give you 50 mins of recording). You will need attachments such as cage, rail, monitor, and follow focus (the fps AF is so bad this is basically a manual focus camera). You can use Premiere or After Effects for grading and editing but DaVinci Resolve is king with the fp.
@@arthurtaylor8726 Thank you very much. Yes I am not interested in Auto Focus and 50 min for one SSD is quit big if used properly planned frames. Thanks again.
Amazing footage. Subscribed waiting for more. Cheers.
@@nikolozgabedava6934 Thanks Nikoloz! I appreciate it and I look forward to checking your stuff out soon!
is this the new firmware 2.0?
This was the old firmware.
I'm crazy but sometimes the fast shutter is fun for me to see. IDK what it is haha.
Dude I totally agree! Honestly for wide shots I prefer like 1/100 because it feels like it adds more life to the shot.
@@arthurtaylor8726 Agree! Especially static shots.
