In today's topic, I share my thoughts on the medicine cat code and explain why I think that certain rules are unfair and should be adjusted. This is something I've always wanted to talk about, so I hope you guys enjoy!

Also, I'm getting a few comments about Moth Flight and how she made the rules for a reason. I know she made the rules but I have not read Moth Flight's Vision otherwise I would have mentioned her, so please try to refrain from spoiling it! That being said, I do know a bit of what happens with her kits and such. And to that I say... Moth Flight is ONE cat. Her experiences won't be the same for every other medicine cat in her situation. You can't just make rules on something and say they're unbiased if it's based off of ONE cat's experiences. In DOTC, Moth Flight was easily distracted a lot and was always scolded because of this--I'm not surprised she couldn't handle having kits on top of her duties. But other cats such as Yellowfang and Leafpool, in my opinion, likely could have cared for their kits and their clans efficiently, and the fact that they had to give their kits up caused more damage in the long-run.

You know what would interesting to see in warriors. Two medicine cats in the same clan are mates and one of them don't have the ability to give birth to kits or have kits.

@@ramu-silly yeah! Imagine having a mate but you can't have kits with them. The only thing the kittypet (or rogue) can give to the clan is their contribution in fighting as a warrior and hunter. It doesn't sound too bad considering there is a lot of warriors/hunters in the books. It would be so cute if the kitless couple adopted a couple of kits or a young cat in need of guidance.

And the mate one was when Moth Flight quit for a bit to go to ShadowClan because Micah died.

Ok. If y’all remember the old Warriors page, they had the codes for Medicine cats AND the warrior code. In the books, they say Med cats are forbidden to have kits because of what the code says. Yet, the code never said that. What should be able to happen is;
When the med cat is about to have her kits, the med app should take over while the Med takes a few moons off in the nursery till the kit(s) become apprentices.
X Demondroid I think that a medicine cat should only be able to have kits if there’s a second medicine cat, because a medicine cat apprentice is basically a student who is learning to become a medicine cat, so something could go wrong if the apprentice is in charge

@@aliasgotl0st454 yeah but the tom still takes care of the kits too. Fernsong raised his kits because his mate didn't want to stay in the nursery, so the rule still applies. And most kits are raised by both parents, and you saying that kits should only be raised by the mother is like the Daisy situation, where the kits didn't know their father, which was pretty horrible. Also, the rule was created so that the medicine cat didn't put their mates or kits above the rest of the clan, and because the medicine cat couldn't ignore their duties to take care of their kits.
If you’ve ever read Mothflight’s super edition she is the one that sent the code and had to give up her kits because it caused complicated issues

Also, the medicine cats can't have kits rule was implemented because of a biased situation. Moth flight was the first medicine cat who had four kits and didn't have a mate. She had a lot on her plate and couldn't take care of her duties very well because of this. She ended up having to give away her kits and he implemented that rule into the code. Knowing the reason, behind this rule, I realized it was dumb because of how situational the whole ordeal was. It doesn't apply to today's medicine cats as much. I agree that the rule should be changed or removed.
I agree,back then she was the one and only medicine cat meaning if she gets distracted,her clanmates will DIE but now,there are ALOT of medicine cats and if one have a kit or kits,then they can get some rest from their duties and will be resting and taking care of their kits untill they are 6 moons and then she can finally go back to their duties

and as long as there are either multiple medicine Cats or their apprentice is trained enough to take care of stuff for a while, females could have kits too.
Or instead of that, a Queen could move into the medicine den and nurse the med cat’s kits, so the med cat can still be near her kits

Although sweet, I don't think the medicine den is a healthy environment. There are herbs they could swallow, a sickly cat could be getting treated. It's cute but I believe unhealthy for the kits
The rule about medicine cats not being allowed to have a mate or kits is made / explained(?) in Mothflight's Vision (spoiler warning(?) when Acorn Fur confesses that she started developing feelings for a tom in her clan that she was starting to get close with (I would name him but I don't remember) and Mothflight (a cat with low attention span) says that it was too much stress because she had to focus on both her kits and her own clan. Half Moon made this an official rule (at the spot may I add) so basically, the rule was implemented so then medicine cats wouldn't get distracted from their work. It was a completely stupid situation, and they justified the rule after the action of one medicine cat, who DECIDED to have a mate and kits and should've understood the amount of stress it could come from having to balance out how much she paid attention to both her clan and kits

Besides the very known stupid rules of not having a mate or kits I also find it funny how med cats only get basic battle training. I mean you would think the clans would want one of the most important cats in the clan to be able to protect themselves much better than with just "basic" moves.
I don't know why They can't have kits, mudfur alredy have a daughter and a mate and it's a good medicine cat.

He did all that before he became a medicine cat. Mothflight made these rules because she was distracted by her young kits and felt too much worry about them to care for other cats properly. She felt others would be too (as explained in the video 11:42).
That means any cat who does warrior duties and has a family but later wants to be a medicine cat has already "broken" the rules. However as we've read this hasn't affected their work. So yep, a ridiculous rule.
@Reagan Stewart you are so right. Her mate would have helped her and if not the mate then the other queens or the med cat's sisters/brothers (especially if the mate died unexpectedly). They are a Clan so why aren't they helping each other out more?

Med cats should atleast have 3 moons of warrior training. So they can defend themselves! ^^

that's really interesting tho, cause both spottedleaf and cinderpelt died protecting kits, and i dont understand why med cats cant get fighting training, when obviously, it would save their lives. It makes no sense
They have basic traning battle
power of 3 shows that medicine cats get basic battle/warrior training, and in fact leafpool teaching hollyleaf a few basic hunting/fighting moves is what made her realize she wanted to be a warrior
Cinderpelt would have a poor chance of winning the fight anyway,she's has a injured leg so couldn't move faster and she was protecting a queen who was kitting so she couldn't move much freely without probably hurting them
And plus if I'm correct cinderpelt was protecting them from a badger and I don't think any cat has been able to defeat a badger without getting a injury
As for the kits law, I think it should be changed to “you cannot have a mate or kite until after you have trained an apprentice”
I may be one of the few people out there who actually gets the Medicine Code and agrees with the forbidden relationship and kits rules, but I do also agree that they need to be updated.
While they are situational, that's kinda the point- a guide of what should be done in this scenario.
If a clan only has one young medicine cat and no apprentice or kits old enough to be chosen to be a medicine cat apprentice, then the clan might be in a bit of bad luck if their med cat is kitting. And while they may be able to take care of themselves, it really is a bummer when you have a litter to take care of.
Putting all your faith in one person to be a doctor to some 30+ patients is stressful and you have to be very responsible in order to not set yourself up in a bad luck situation where the med cat is kitting and a war is happening at the boarders. "Not allowed to have kits" rule is mostly to prevent these dire cases.
It should, in best case scenario, be updated to where medicine cats should be allowed to have kits if there is a medicine cat apprentice or second medicine cat to care for them and the clan while they are off duty- So the cat can fully rest and enjoy their time as queen with their family.
The point of a Medicine cat not having a mate is because it would generate a preference to care for them first. As Rose said in the video, "You can't just tell someone to not love somebody!"
And that's exactly the problem. It DOES distract the medicine cats from fulfilling their duty of caring for their clan. The other part of the code she agreed with was how a Medicine cat should put aside their feelings and dislike to treat all cats equally. Just as you can't tell someone to not love somebody- You can't tell them to not hate somebody either, especially if they did something wrong to you in the past.
If someone bullied you as a kid, and you grew up to be a doctor and found out your significant other caught a cold, but at the same time that bully was wheeled into the hospital because they got in a car crash, you would be absolutely required to take care of them first regardless how much you dislike them. Because their situation is more dire. But there are indeed some people who would be selfish and would blow off the bully out of spite and let them die while they went to check on their mate.
It's to prevent selfishness from Medicine cats and to balance out the other part of the Medicine cat code. Hate AND Love should be pushed aside for the sake of one's duties.
While to a warrior, having a mate can be an inspiration on the battle field. To a Medicine cat, having a mate can only make more complicated situations.
The bias thing is the same with Kits as well. As Medicine cats would show more preference for their direct children.
The only issue with it is that almost all of the clans have strong bloodline ties anyway, and Medicine cats are still encouraged to have friends who they could be bias too as well. So you could either say Medicine cat should be completely isolated- Which nobody wants, or simply rewrite the code to be something like:
"A Medicine cat should not let any emotion, love or hate, to hinder them from their duties. They should care for the cats in the most dire conditions first regardless of feelings towards them."
It is really funny how people see "Don't let hate stop you from doing your job" as a normal thing. But everyone throws uproar when someone says "Don't let love stop you from doing your job" because stars forbid you break someone's heart instead of their legs.
I like your points but am wondering now what the med cats should do if two cats come to the den, one has basically no chance of living at all but the other does. The cat that has pretty much no chance of survival no matter what the med cat does happens to be a kithood bully whereas the other cat happens to be a close friend. Would it still be the wrong thing to treat the cat that is closer to the med cat if they are the one who will be able to survive/function properly/serve the clan more/better in the long run or not?
Quite to a literal extent, on the kit code, it's said as biased. Basically they'd care for their son or daughter before other Clanmates... Yet... They're still a clanmate. If you decided to save your random clanmate, and your child dies, you still lost your clanmate. Wether it's your child or a random clanmate injured at the same time, you have to save both, it doesn't matter which one you save first. Both are a clanmate. What's worse, taking biased actions and letting a random clanmate die to save your child, or saving the random clanmate and letting your child die? Neither are worse than the other. It doesn't matter either way.
I feel like the kits rule for medicine cats should be modified so that they can only have kits if there is another med cat/med apprentice, or a warrior who is willing to temporarily help out with duties (like brightheart)

And i completely agree with you on everything on this. I often feel like medicine cats gets pretty isolated from everyone else in the clans because of their strict rules and it really makes the role seem undesirable so many cats (often with disabilities) just get forced into being a medicine cat instead. Like i get that being a medicine cat is a big important thing but they need their own lives too. I wish there could be more cats like Brightheart that knows the basic treatments to help the medicine cats out a bit

If the medicine cat code was changed, with the results similar to your reasoning, more cats would probably want to be medicine cats. One of the main things that makes being a medicine cat seam unappealing is not being able to have a mate and kits so if this was changed there would probably be more medicine cats which would be more beneficial to the clans. I like this video 💜
There could also be a special area in the med cat den for the kits so the med cat can take care of herbs, warriors, etc while also taking care of her kits

Doctors in real life aren't allowed to work on a family member because they have a special attachment to that person; it could be beyond damaging to the doctor to have this family member die in the process of treatment or an operation. I believe this is the only reason why a cat should not have a mate or kits. What I'd also like to point out is that, if a medicine she-cat is having kits, her apprentice would have to take over medicine cat duties, which I feel isn't fair to the younger cat.
It’s like imagine if they did train a med cat I’m one clan and move there med cat. Like just imagin like the whole POT and OOTS like Jay and lion and dove would not be able to be together and I feel like it would reck havoc on Jay’s and other other med cats mental state like depression because of being lonely

I know it was more of a punishment thing but Leafpool had to become a warrior (from memory it was from choice?) so the 'Warriors can become medicine cats, but medicine cats can't become warriors' rule is flawed.

With the med cat becoming a warrior rule, it's broken so causlly too with when leafpool became a warrior for a while and when HollyLeaf stopped being a med apprentice.

In my current warriors timeline that takes place several centuries after the events in broken code, medicine she-cats can have kits as long as they have an apprentice to take their place, and medicine toms can have kits regardless since they're not the primary care-takers.
I think it would be really interesting to have an arc (maybe this latest one, depending on what direction it takes) where the clans rewrite the codes, or at least revise a few of the sillier/more extreme rules. Or, even more interesting, each clan ends up having their own version of the code due to their personal beliefs and circumstances.

In a roleplay I manage there's a thing called the "New Code" where its a revision of the Warrior Code. Historically, it was changed through the campaigning of a Riverclan Leader who took away rules, added a few, and revised the rest. The medicine cats can have kits and a mate so long as they have an apprentice or another full medicine cat working alongside them to pick up the slack they one with kits *might* drop. It's honestly so much better tbh.
I love listening to your videos while I write my fanfic series ”A Warriors Life” (it follows a cat from each clab in each book until the sixth called Past where it rounds back to riverclan.) I love to hear other ideas about how the code could be improved, and then go back and write about it unimproved.

Edit:I’ve seen some replies, and I do think that she was influenced from Thistleclaw. Sure he was a manipulative old man, but you have to remember, SpottedLeafs love is blind. She thought it was ok, she may not have felt the same feelings towards him, (Being her becoming a medicine cat,) But when she “fElL iN lOvE”, She Used Him as her excuse for the age gap. But the age gap IsN’t mY pOiNt! There was barely any interactions, and little to NO chemistry! I think the real reason the Erin’s PUSHED it is to prove her love is blind.

After Spottedleaf’s heart happened this ship turned out even creepier to me. Thistleclaw is hitting on Spottedpaw, an apprentice, and later Spottedleaf gets a crush on Firepaw, like she thought that was okay, a thing everyone did. And the ship is incredibly forced. They barely talked at all. Then Spottedleaf was dead.

The reason that Medicine Cats can’t have lots was started in Mothight’s Something-or-other the Super Edition (cant remember the name).
She had kits and realized she couldn’t think of anything or do her duties FULLY because she was constantly afraid for her kits. Starclan made each cat promise that they would not have kits

12:50 I dont know if anyone else thought of this, but the idea of medicine cats training in one clan the moving to another made me think of a sort of AU.
What if there was a micro clan of medicine cats who train future medicine cats who are then distributed by Starclan to different clans? Like a monk/nun like clan that train without bias n' whatnot, and maybe they're chosen so young that they dont even remember their birth family? Ooooo, I might just expand on the concept
It is reasonable to say that Medicine Cats should not risk their lives to save an elder because they may pass soon inevitably, but, as for all of these rules in the code, they are based off of tradition. They may not all make sense, but canonically the cats themselves will have to come to realization to change the code. I do love to hear everyone's perspectives and alternative contributions to the code as a whole, though. ♥

I couldn't agree with you more. So many medicine cats have suffered from some of the rules of this code and I think even each medicine cat has fallen in love in their lives but because it's forbidden most of them give their future mates up..

Chirpixir they may not be fully trained and it would be very hectic and stressful for everyone and other medicine cats may help but they won’t be able to stay long enough to fully train them

Moth Flights vision (or whatever it’s called) is where the mates/kits code becomes implemented. It makes sense for her situation but it’s a weird topic bc sometimes med cats can take care of their kits and trust that their clan will be safe idk it’s a weird rule

I forget the details but it's about making sure the medicine cat knows where their priorities lie, so they're not torn between one of those "who would you save first" things

Also, yes, Mudfur of Riverclan was a warrior with a mate (I don’t remember her name) and kit (leopardstar actually) and became a med cat after she died in battle
Your point about med cats not dying to save other cats reminds me of one of the healer rules for games - save yourself first! if a dps goes out, then one person is dead. if the healer goes out, the whole team could die and you could lose the point.
Another thing about medicine cats having kits, is that their kits might be more interested and encouraged to become a medicine cat because their mother is. There could be many more medicine cats in the clan if they were allowed to have kits.
Yes, yes it is. The code has been broken so many times that the rules that are there are almost non existent. Especially the rules about not being allowed to fall in love and have kits. Not matter what position you are in, you should be able to be allowed to fall in love and be able to have a mate. I understand why they can’t have kits, but if a medicine cat is responsible enough, their romance won’t distract them from their duties. It’s unfair that medicine cats are prohibited from falling in love because other cats can’t do their duties and have a mate. Also, the rule you mentioned about cats switching positions, Leafpool switched positions, so that rule was broken. That rule just doesn’t make sense, like you said, it would be more fair if no one could switch.

In addition to the Medicine Cat not having kits argument, throughout the Warriors series', there are multiple cats besides Med Cats that have knowledge of herbs and healing, Brightheart is an example. She constantly helped out when they needed it or she had time. That's just another point I wanted to make.
I’m not gonna look up the page number or anything but there’s a specific time in one Warriors book I remember where someone told leaf pool that squirrel flight was hurt and leaf pool immediately rushed over not even thinking about the other cat who she was caring for that cat wasn’t in as much danger or anything but it still shows that kin can be distracting or you might want to care for your kin more. If the warrior code is OK with that then why not let medicine cats have kits?

I swear if one more medicine cat gets in trouble for having kits and they dont change the code I'm going to scREAM.
I think both the med cat code and the warriors code should be updated, however I think a lot of the med code makes sense and is fine.
-Yes I think the no mates/kits rule should be expanded to toms as well. Why? Just because they didnt give birth to them doesnt mean they wouldnt love them and spend any less time with their kits
-For the no mates/kits, this was shown really well in moth flights vision. The reasoning here was that her kits were always wanting to play with her and she could never do her duties because she kept having to check if the kits were in danger. I think this code is fine because they already have way more work to do than a warrior. Also med's are supposed to be like the mothers checking up on all the warriors like they would their kits, so having kits would kinda mess that up.

I never understood the rule about med cats not being able to fall in love. You can't control your feelings and it just causes medicine cats to suffer.

Fun fact: in roleplays I’ve been in everyone was just like ‘screw the code’ and medicine cats could have kits and mates if there was another med or a med app, like how it should be
The kits rule is because if the kit gets injured, they might freeze up and not be able to save their kit, especially when they are young
The same would happen if their parents or siblings would get injured, medicine cats still have kin in the Clan.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying about the medicine cat rules. But also if the medicine cat did have a mate, the mate could actually help the medicine with a lot of stuff aswell.(and it's good for any warrior to know what some of the knowledge of herbs) I believe it is part of a warriors job to go out and find herds and help the medicine cat. So there shouldn't be a problem with having a mate Also again like you said if the medicine cat does have kits there will most likely be another medicine cat or cats to help with taking care of the clan.
Honestly I want to see a book where a medicine cat makes a revolutionary journey on changing some of the medicine cat rules. And maybe have a medicine cat villain in retaliation.

I saw on a other video where they said "maybe if there was more than one medicine cat the other one could have kits since there was another medicine cat to help." not the exact quote but yeah I agree with this.
In my warriors AU writing, medicine cats can have mates but their kits must be given to a capable queen so the medicine cat can work, the medicine cat has to be like Squirrelflight as Lion, Jay, and Holly’s “mom”. Not always there but definitely motherly and affectionate.
the rule that says that can’t have kits or mates originated in Moth Flights Vision. read it if you can, it answers the questions as to why they exist.
