I have my story about Roy Orbison who was a huge part of my teenage years enduring some unrequited love at the time.
Saw him at the Surf Nantasket Beach in Hull MA. He was singing “Crying”, got to the last soaring high note and his voice cracked. He stopped the band, walked over to the side of the stage where a bottle of Coke was sitting, took a swig, walked back to the mic, started the band up again a few bars before the note and... nailed it! The crowd went wild. True story, I’ll never forget it. He was the best.
I used to play there after they change the name to Uncle Sam's Nantasket Beach.
My dad tuned me on to Roy (and many other great musicians) when I was a "budding wanna be heavy metal player" in the 80's. He told me "Never discount other genres of music, there is joy and and things to be learned from them". One of the many pieces of wisdom my father imparted upon me and it completely opened up mind in a way that is truly priceless. So much tragedy in Roy's life, a true American treasure...
I was at Roy's final concert! Venue was the Front Row Theater. Greatest vocalist I have ever seen. A few days later, he was gone.
Very cool story. During the same time generally, my dad was Roy’s doctor. He didn’t really know who Roy was, but his nurse did. She told him he was the guy who sang “Oh Pretty Woman “. Then it registered with him, though he was much older. Anyway when Roy died, my dad told me that he was just a really nice guy, and I was amazed that he’d never talked about it before. Strange world.
The "Black and White Nights" concert video is such a classic. I still listen to the soundtrack while driving. Best version of "Oh, Pretty Woman" on there.

I saw Roy in the 80's here in Canada and I remember he hit an impossible high note at the end of one of his classic songs and it ended but he surprised us with a reprise of the last line. He hit the same high note again as if to say I can hit it whenever I want.
That would have been Running Scared. He did that reprise a lot in live shows.

It’s so pleasing to hear stories about your heroes that live up to expectations in a good way. “Only the Lonely” because it was so unique for the time…the technique of vocals and timing used to build the suspense.
My favorite Roy song is “You Got It”, co-written with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynn. My 11th birthday was in the winter of 1989 and all I wanted was Roy’s newest album, Mystery Girl. My dear mother gave me the cassette. I still find the song, and album, as infectious as I did on that day. Really cool structure to it. I attribute the arrangement to Jeff Lynn. But it’s only a hunch. And the vocals are stratospheric!
Tom Petty during the Wilburys film tells the story of speaking to Roy and telling him. "Roy you must be about the best singer there is." Roy replies just shaking his head and saying "yeah". He didn't have anything to prove to anyone . That's what probably kept him so humble and void of ego. When your really that good ,you don't have to say it.

You can hear it in the wilburys harmonies. they all had great voices but Roys was just on another level.
Roy was so talented and his voice could melt you and give you chills. So nice to hear people affirm what you always felt about Roy. Loved him then and still do.

The opera singer of the Sun Studio gang. His voice, with that other world falsetto, is just a show stopper. I loved the duets he did, the one with KD Lang (props to a amazing Canadian artist) "Crying" makes me want to sit and feel the lyrics... just incredible
I was lucky to have seen Roy on that final tour in my hometown in Columbus ,OH. I literally was shocked how good he was ! I started going to live concerts when I was 15 in 1976. From Aerosmith to Zeppelin and Even Luciano Pavarotti & Andrea Bocelli... I've forgotten many a hundred shows but not the evening I was able to hear Roy sing. He was different. He could touch your soul with his voice. 👋 I would go with "Crying" for my favorite.
Roy's one of those guys you appreciate more and more as you get older.
I knew Roy Orbison when I was a kid, long before he became famous, but one thing is for sure, Roy had the best singing voice that I have ever heard. By the way, I was the only one that he would let his wife dance with! I guess I don't look very dangerous. She was a very good dancer. I think I was 14 at the time and Roy had a band he called the Teen Kings. Great old times. A few years later and he was the hottest ticket in the USA.

I could never narrow Roy down to one favorite, can’t say I ever pick favorites because I enjoy ‘em all as if they’re favorites! Ok, “Pretty Woman” because as a kid that just picked up a guitar for the first time it was a catalyst to learn great riffs. His collaborative work with The Wilbury’s was a great showcase for his amazing talent. Only the Lonely, back when “hits” were actually great music. I met Bucky Barrett awhile ago & he shared a great story about Roy, love hearing them. Thank you Barry & Otis for sharing!

Roy Orbison was amazing. His live album, “A Black & White Night”, I think is one of the best live albums out of any genre of music. It’s Roy Orbison at his absolute best in my opinion. Anyone that’s hasn’t heard it or seen it, is missing a real jewel of a musical event.

We danced close to a Roy Orbison album. We got quite sweaty and nervous as I recall. Sadly, She sent me off before her parents were due.
That's ok..neither of us knew what to do! But the magic of Roy's ballads on that night stays with me yet.

Elvis and Roy both had that voice, the kind of voice that's just there. It wasn't practiced, rehearsed or tried, it was just there. I've read that this was one of Elvis's personal struggles as he often wondered why he was seemingly chosen to have that voice and the ability to sing virtually without any thought or rehearsal, other than to arrange the songs because the voice was already there.

I always thought Roy Orbison was a class act. One of the earlier song I figured out how to play was "Pretty Woman", but I enjoyed all of his music.

There is a story I believe from a Roy Orbison biography about the great Burnette brothers, Johnny and Dorsey, trying to pick a fight with Roy. The brothers were supposedly drunk and angry about something that had gone on at a package show in Memphis. They were former boxers and decided the guy they wanted to fight was the meekest, nicest guy in the place, Roy Orbison. According to the story they had Roy cornered when Carl Perkins saw what was going on. If the story is true Carl fought both and got the best of both then threw them out of the theatre.

I enjoyed a great many of Roy Orbison's songs, but one of the latter-day ones that stood out for me was "She's a Mystery to Me," written for him by Bono. It pleased me to no end decades later to hear it in the "Aquaman" movie.
The other latter-day song that stands out is a posthumous one, "Love in Time." That one, Robbie Robertson took Roy's scratch vocal and weaved a lush arrangement around it. It remains the best Robbie Robertson guitar solo I've heard.
Great to hear these stories. I don’t know much about the back story of Roy so this was interesting to hear. Barry is a great storyteller.

Roy was also an incredibly gifted songwriter. I saw an interview, once, where he explained how he came to write “Pretty Woman.” “I had just had a hit with ‘It’s Over’ and was told that I would need to write an uptempo song, now. That’s the way record executives thought in those days.” So, he wrote a classic.

I was talking to a band leader in Nashville. He told me Roy would open for elvus and steal the show til Elvis dropped him.roy sang from the soul. Where I thought Elvis missed. Roy and Johnny Cash both had that soul thing going on. Only my opinion.
His early 60's songs like "Crying" and "In Dreams" seemed prophetic in light of his personal tragedies. Yet he believed he would walk beside his loved ones and Jesus again in Heaven. I believe he is with them today.

IN the days of cassettes, I put You got it and California Blue on the end of a tape. Because I did not have enough tape, I cut out the break between the 2 songs. Accidentally I created one song out of 2 and it sounded really great. When I put the music onto cd, I took the songs from the cd and could not get the same non break between those 2 songs. But it sounded really great when the 2 were combined.

My dad’s cousin gave Roy Orbison and a lady friend a taxi ride from middlesbrough to Blackpool, England. He was really looking forward to a substantial tip after such a long journey. When they pulled up at the destination Roy got out and walked away. No tip!
In our family Roy will always be known as tight arse who never gave my dad’s cousin a tip 60 years ago! 🤣 RIP Roy x

How about the times they would tune to a higher pitch, and Roy wouldn't even flinch, just singing the notes like they were in standard tuning?
In about 1975 my Mom worked for a big medical rehabilitation center in Dallas. Every year they had a telethon that was aired on a Dallas channel and public TV. Mom would answer phones and take donations. I was about 8 and would go with Mom to meet all the famous people lol. I was mainly interested in Dallas Cowboys and cheerleaders. One night it was about 3am and i was hanging out by myself in this big breakroom. A guy in sunglasses walked in and he struck up a conversation with me. I had no idea who he was or what a giant star he was. We just talked and actually shared a sandwich. Later my Mom poked her head in and asked if I wanted to Meet Roger Staubach. Of course I jumped at the chance and Roy said Oh boy you dont want to miss that. I told him bye and headed down the hall with my Mom. She asked me if I had any idea who id been talking to. I said yeah his name is Roy and hes really nice. I was oblivious lol. After I got a bit older I became a huge fan.

the only person i know who sings like roy is raul malo. They are different, but he can do the dance just like roy.
Cool story. Not sure why Springsteen would come to your mind as a singer in the same contest as Roy tho.
