Berney Arms - Not The Least Used Station in Norfolk

- It seems that the 'Least Used' Buckenham video got people asking "But I thought Berney Arms was the least used!?" - it's not, so here's a RE-POST of a video I made seven years ago now, when I first visited Berney Arms ... yes it's England's remotest station, but it's not the least used station in Norfolk.
Also follow the link/card through to the 'Berney Arms Blunder' when we went back through visiting as part of All The Stations in 2017. The pub is now sadly closed down, and there is no longer a shelter on the platform!
The Berney Arms Blunder: • The Berney Arms Blunde...
The pub would be the only reason to make the 5 mile walk worthwhile....
Said pub has now shut.
@@mattholland6341 I know Matt, hence why I wouldn't be making the trip or walk....😊
Matt: yet the landlady made such a good job of 'selling it' to viewers :-) ...when I was a student, my girlfriend and I trekked out there one beautiful and deep snowy day. A long time ago.
I recently discovered this series and I love it! I have a friend who is also a big train fan, but his trips are always boring. You really know how to make it fun and interesting. Congratulations!
Pub closed some years ago - it was still semi-derelict following a fire when I last walked past in 2017.
Stopped off at this place a few times while renting a boat on travelling along the Norfolk river system. Was a good stopping point for the night before travelling across to Great Yarmouth. Shame the pub is no longer there.
34 trains a week is in a different league compared to Reddish South... and we'll leave it there.
I got off at Berney Arms in April 2018 and walked the rest of the way to Great Yarmouth, and back again. It was a lovely day for it and the area is divine. I was one of three people who got off the train. Sadly the pub and cafe are now closed.
This station reminds me of the station in the Spirited Away anime where she boards the train and goes for the unknown...
The line on which Berney Arms station is on will be closed from late October till April 2019. As storage for equipment for the Wherry Line upgrades. And it is said there's a rail replacement bus service, which doesn't serve the station.
well as there is no road to the station, it would be odd if the buses could serve it! :D
@@roundel52 someone did suggest a helicopter replacement service
Needs a rail replacement boat service.
Canal boat replacement.
Now due to reopen in February 2020.
I might go there and buy a return to Buckenham!
I read on BBC news today (26 Nov 2021) that this station has had an 8 fold increase in passenger numbers, the biggest increase of any station. There were 348 passengers in the year ending in March, but had only 42 the previous year.
The news report even quotes Geoff as saying "it's a beautiful quirk of Britain's railway system"
No doubt many folk who have watched this video have decided to go and pay a visit.
Berney Arms is closed until April 2019 due to engineering work. Should help it re-gain least used status.
I bought a Wherry Lines rover ticket in May and travelled both lines from Norwich (to Great Yarmouth via Acle, and then to Lowestoft via Reedham). Because Reedham Junction signal box is permanently closed there’s no practical way of signalling trains between Reedham and Yarmouth (via Berney Arms), so that line is out of use until the resignalling work is complete, which should now be by early February 2020.
Indeed, there was a sleeper placed across the single track on the line from Reedham to Berney Arms.
This feels a bit like a LWT doco from 1985.
Welp, it is now
I like that the station has a bike stand! Done it once when I lived in GY
I genuinely can't wait for you to do Barry Links. Pretty sure The Northern Lights stopped in Barry Links waiting for a signal when I was on it going to Aberdeen last August - funnily enough it was deserted 😃
Ahh yay berney arms my new dream station to visit lol
Great interview!
would like more content
I've been there a few times and also went past it on the way to the Gt Yarmouth Airshow
Welcome to least used stations: Opposite Day edition
Landlady sounds cheerful
ive seen this already why am i rewatching?
Description clearly states it is a repost
luca ioan it’s not a go at Geoff, it’s a go at herself
Great video and a shame the pub went but weird to have marshes right next to the station.
The Transport Hub. Or is it weird to have a station next to the marshes? 😄
Went up a couple years ago, pub was open but under new management. Didn't to in mind you.
you can moor at the pub
Pretty sure the Berney Arms is closed. Has been for a couple of years now.
"The pub is now sadly closed down, and there is no longer a shelter on the platform"
Try reading....
When are you doing a new least used station in West Sussex or Hampshire
Nice video Geoff 😀
0:23 The map is inaccurate (I know that’s not your fault, Geoff); it makes Norwich out to be a through station, when it’s actually a terminus.
The class 230 d train could be coming to the isle of Wight
thanks!
Geoff's voice has changed... or does he keep the microphone further away from his mouth than he used to?
Did the pub cloead down
Shouldn’t it be 38 trains a week not 34?
Edward Aboud 32 a week during the non-summer months (4 a day Mondays to Saturdays and 8 a day on Sundays). Those numbers go up to 6 and 10 during the summer.
Mind you, at the moment the number is 0 because of the ongoing resignalling of the Wherry Lines. Should be complete by early February 2020.
Go to shippea hill boi and then tell me you know what the middle of nowhere is
Yeah they already did. BOI. Who the hell talks like that anyway.
TheSniper9752 Oh my bad I did quickly search before I commented but must've missed it. I guess it must have been because I don't have a cool name like TheSniper
@@RealUlrichLeland, Thanks for the sarcasm, really needed my daily dose of it.
TheSniper9752 No problem The Sniper, I'm always happy to deliver sarcasm daily, especially to such affable people like yourself 😁😙.
what is this comment thread ;-;
Oops I missed the trsin
What's a trsin?
@@TheSniper9752 meant to put train
Not sure I get the point of reposting a video that's 7 years old?
^^ This man gets it
Point taken. That said, I think that this has the potential to create even greater tides of people who don't understand the context immediately. For me (someone who understands that these stats change over time), it just left me wondering if the pub had re-opened because I didn't read all the text straight off.
Buzz, your girlfriend.... woof.
She's got an effin station, nothing to complain about. "Remote" in England is a very whiney concept, apparently.
?? It certainly is very remote for England.
Wow a branch line that Beeching did not find Nice one
Yeah I think it’s because Great Yarmouth won’t get enough service if the line was closed.
The Bittern line between Brundall and Great Yarmouth via Acle is only a single track so it’ll only be 1 train 1 way per hour service to Great Yarmouth.
The line via Reedham is double tracked so it has more capacity and is used by services to both Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft...
Kuya Leinad The Bittern Line is Norwich to Sheringham.
Kenickie Syxx I think that the cost of running trains on that particular line was so minimal that they didn’t think it would be worthwhile removing it.
Did you know Berney Arms station was featured on the 1989 ITV adventure show Interceptor? One of the contestants was dropped off near the station and got a train to Reedham whilst escaping from the Interceptor, who was stalking the contestant in his helicopter G-MEAN.
I did some internet searching, and, as far as I can tell, the least used train station in the United States is Sanderson, Texas. One long distance train, three days a week each way, in a town with a population of 837 (and nothing else for many, many miles). It was used by 193 passengers in 2017. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanderson_station
Stop calling it a TRAIN station!!!! We are not Americans! It is a RAILWAY station!!

I'm from New Jersey and I even don't like "Railroad Station" or Railroad Tracks" even if referring to stuff here.
It is too bad that the train station and the pub are in such conditions. I remember that I safed Berney Arms years ago (probably 7 yrs ago) on my Browser to go there one day. Because it was so random when I read about it as an example for something on Wikipedia which I don't remember.
You should look at all the abandoned train stations in Norfolk like Aldeby train station
Its such an odd station but i have seen like 3 people get off it before haha
My city closes busy railway lines but the UK keeps stations in the middle of no where open
The lady from the pub looks like a character of Game of Thrones or something medieval...
Another great video Geoff! Always brightens up my day seeing a notification you’ve posted some content!
Such a shame the pub is no longer open and a bit of a wreck
Bummer about the pub. Guess it was just too isolated.
Barney arms 966-202 Buckenham according to the 2017/18 statistics
This is the kind of station you would travel to when you have given up on life.
Looks like the kind of pub you would buy when you had done so too
My favourite station
Now it is in the whole of Britain(least used)
Reminds me of the station the Trainspotting boys get off and go for their walk
Loved visiting there. You've reminded me that I should go there agin soon.
woo, so many train lines in UK compared to Norway... !
There's another pub otherwise of the river at burgh castle
the mill is actually closer to the river
Now that the pub has closed, is it STILL not the least used station in Norfolk, then? I believe number of trains has reduced too.
Simeon Jackson There’s no trains running through there at the moment because of the ongoing resignalling work, which is now due to be complete by early February 2020.
2 vids are for kids. Joke
Edit: typo
'Least Used Station in Norfolk'
Queen visits
Wow!
It says not the least instead of the least ?
I hope the pub reopens at some point.
The pub burnt down if I'm correct
There was indeed a fire. But the building still stands.
