- Acura's long-running MDX is the best selling luxury 3-row SUV in America but the competition is getting tougher and it's possible Acura might lose their sales crown by the end of this year. To help stave off the competition they have given the MDX a bit of a tweak for 2025. While some might have hoped for a more through refresh, the MDX still has a great deal going for it. As long as you're not looking for good fuel economy...

10:00 thank you travis and alex for using two adults to demonstrate third row room. please do this in every video from now on!
Wasn’t aware this is best selling 3 row - wow. Used to own one of these it was a great vehicle. I think the best looking. Wish they had a plug in hybrid - we would be buying one again.
I wish for a hybrid as well. When we got this one (a-spec) as a service loaner for a few days, the fuel economy was not any better, if not worse, than our old 3.7L 2010 MDX. Maybe I should have done an ecu reset by disconnecting the battery because so many other people had driven it but it wasn’t our car and I didn’t want to mess with it.
Unfortunately Acura standard canned response is that they will skip over hybrids and go straight to EV after this generation cycle… and in today’s softening car market for the latter, I have my doubts 😔
@@Fabulousprofound168 Yah. We were at the Mercedes dealer last year shopping and the dealer huffily stated when we asked about a plug in hybrid (which they sell in Europe but not here) that "nobody is buying those" and that "Mercedes is committed to full EV". So we left. Now they changing course like many others. With battery tech advancing like it is I see no reason to spend money on a full EV that will be next to worthless in a few years. We have a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV that is 5-6 years old and it's great for our use - can go EV day to day but still travel long range without a problem.
The biggest thing that the MDX needs is a hybrid option. The sport hybrid was special.
The "Sport Hybrid" is still in the Honda lineup, we could very well see it again in the MDX. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide which model is currently a Sport hybrid in the Honda lineup?
@@drivescene6747I think he is talking about sport trim level with a hybrid, not the previous gen MDX sport hybrid drivetrain. I wish we get an updated version of the MDX sport hybrid, preferably a bit more horsepower and torque, plus a 10 speed automatic transmission instead of 7 speed DCT.
@@blackwhirlwind1245 all they had to do is take the hybrid bits from the last mdx and the 10at+turbo 3.0 from this to make the ultimate mdx-s
coulda been 400hp+not bad mpg
@@ShaiyanHossain I don’t know if that’s possible to put all that under the hood. I guess it’s good for someone who who want even more power, but I personally just want a reliable NA V6 (without the turbo complexity) plus a hybrid powertrain.
Agree! Needs a hybrid or mild hybrid. Throw in some 3rd row air vents, get rid of the piano black trim, and make all the USBs type C.
is there a single 'mild hybrid' car on the market that is more than just a marketing gimmick? I wonder if you are confusing a plug-in with a hybrid.
That would make this car solid after those additions! I think they might actually implement these in the next model generation
Honda is really missing out not having a hybrid MDX. Crazy.
Yeah. One forward two steps back. I don’t get why they didn’t offer 3 power trains . Base v6, hybrid v6, turbo v6 type s. Something for everyone. I would have gotten the hybrid v6; lost a sale right there
Mazda is going to offer that for the Cx5.
The MDX used to come in a hybrid and nobody bought it. They're not missing any opportunity. In fact, this is selling better than when they actually did have the hybrid option
@@dr3amboy3657 lost one sale, but also did not need to spend $$$$$ to develop the hybrid
My wife and I are heavily considering this one over alternatives specifically because it doesn't have a complex hybrid system bolted into it (we are also looking at 2022 X7's because that was the last year before they stuffed a hybrid in it).
The Sport Hybrid (more a performance option, less a fuel economy option) was real fun. Owned it for 2 years, before cashing in on the demand surge during COVID to sell at more than what I paid new :).. Wish they bring a hybrid option (for the MDX, the Pilot and the Odyssey)!
Acura needs to bring back the mdx hybrid. I love my 17 hybrid powertrain and cant see myself upgrading to the current gen without one. It's almost as fast as the type s. Smh
How’s the DCT in your MDX holding up?
Plus isn’t towing not recommended in the MDX hybrid?
@naveenthemachine dct shifts quick enough for this type of car. Maintenance is way cheaper and easier than the zf9 on the trans. I'm at 109k miles and it's smooth. But yes zero towing. I'm sure honda could figure out a way to give it some Nominal towing capacity in a newer iteration.
I think the exterior styling is pretty much sublime. Interior has some faults and lack of storage. But Alex is right, bring back the hybrid and you have the ultimate luxury family runabout
Interior doesn’t have many faults. You can do so much worse in other interiors
@@naveenthemachine I'm nitpicking yes. Overall its great
We have a ‘19 Sport Hybrid, bought new 6 years ago. Effortless power and so easy to get 25+mpg around town and 28+mpg on the highway. Holding onto it for a little longer in the hopes that Acura will make another MDX Hybrid, otherwise might move on to something like an RX
@@naveenthemachine Gloss black is one of them. The infotainment is finally not one of them anymore.
new turbo engine+old hybrid system would have easily gotten 400+hp too
ACURA, please update and hybrize the RDX. Thank you
This is still best in class.
Thank you for saying it. Acura/Honda took all the trouble of developing the awesome Super Handling Sport Hybrid system for the NSX and have the Halo trickle effect by adding it to the RLX/Legend (rest in peace) and MDX & then they don't even carry it forward. I don't understand the lack of logic, the MDX & TLX need that Hybrid system!
Honda is always disappointing
There’s a reason Acura isn’t a top tier luxury brand. It’s stupid decisions like this. They have an excellent hybrid system, already developed but refuse to use it on their best seller.
Competition is fierce in the car market. If you don’t offer it; someone else will and will get the sale. They aren’t the only game in town.
@@dr3amboy3657 Acuras more top tier than you seem to think
At least you’re getting a top tier cabin and a bespoke luxury car architecture
@@naveenthemachine they could have been Lexus but thry are stuck in the tier below them. Lexus has been slowly sucking ass too but they still have the brand cache and sales to remain a tier above.
@@dr3amboy3657 the Lexus brand cache isnt really helping. Other brands are offering more cache because they are better executed than Lexus
As a people mover, it is more in league with the standard Highlander than the Grand Highlander/TX
I never liked the style of the MDX, but it is more stylish than the generally bland entries in this class
Like Alex said, Just one hybrid away from greatness and just one hybrid away from me being the customer.
Acura doesn’t give a crap about you homie. We like V6s
@@wallbangerzsportsno reason why they couldn’t offer both options
@@wallbangerzsports Exactly what they said about their very true trackpad. They didn't give a damn for those yearning for a touchscreen. They ended up ditching it.
It is nice to see the design language dialed down from the curvy points. The straightforward angles seem closer to earlier MDX generations. Thank you for making the trim levels more comprehensible.
They should've kept the palm rest. Second in order to fit 5 carry-on luggage side by side behind the third row, you have to collapse the floor board into the floor then you can stand luggage upright. I'm still shocked that not one reviewer was able to find this.
Acura had a quality Sport Hybrid MDX 2018-2020. They got caught up concentrating on an EV version ZDX ... which will Fail like all the others. Nobody wants them. I have a 22 MDX Advance, which is a terrific SUV and has been touble free for 3 years. If Acura produced a Sport Hybrid new redesigned MDX - OMG, what a Winner that would have Been!! More HP & Torque than the standard 3.5L engine (like mine) but with 20% better MPGs !! No Brainer in every way. And like ion 2018 - only about $1800 more. If Acura had a 25 Sport Hybrid version, I would be trading Up to that with my lease expiration in August. Now, I will extend my lease (Acura Financial is allowing me up to 6 months at my current monthly of $610) to January. Then I will either buyout the MDX for the $35,500 needed (my MDX will have only 21K miles on it) or look to lease another 25 MDX Advance (or a Type S , but the MPGs forces resistance). I'm really liking the new Refreshed MDX - especially with a new InfoT. system getting rid of the TTIP. FWIW, The SH-AWD is one of, if not The best in the Business.
Thank you for the wonderful review. I would love to hear what the new sound readings are back in Kentucky. I was able to test drive a 2025 myself and did note double ridged glass on all four doors.
Great review as usual , just fyi there is a rubber mat to cover the hooks for the middle seat ,it comes with the all weather third raw mat .
Had a 2022 one. Traded it in. Great vehicle, but real world gas mileage was ABYSMAL. 275-300 on a full tank of premium. But i did enjoy EVERYTHING else about it. 💯
I subscribed because I like your comparison graphs (and other graphics). Very helpful and different from other car review channels. Thank you!
The same for the RDX! Make it with a decent hybrid or phev set up and it’s a slam dunk.
I would LOVE if Acura brought back it's SH-AWD with the hybrid system, but I'm assuming they had issues scaling it to large production. I love that Acura is doing a Type S, but I think it's a misstep to go straight to electric.
Finally! You've come along.. the way I feel about you it cant be wrong
Finally, they got the seats right. I get back problems every time we drive our 2015 MDX
It seems to me, the only people who like piano black trim, are automakers.
Spot on! 😅
The previous ELS Studio 3D audio system was one of the best in the segment. Hopefully the Bang & Olufson compares well.
Yes, and for that reason don't understand the change, kind of a "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" thing... Resources could have covered rear vents, less/no piano black, outlet in 2nd row that's mysteriously become a blank in at least the test 2025 vehicles I've seen videos of, ventilated 2nd row, etc...
I have a Honda Clarity and I love the "hunt and peck" shifter. Each button has a distinct tactile characteristic which is a distinct advantage I really appreciate.
I'm glad Acura finally updated the infotainment screen to something comparable to the top trims of the Civic and Accord. Now can they bring the textured, non-reflective plastic from the Civic to the center console to replace the acres of shiny piano black?
It looks like the TX500h outperforms the Type S in every way, especially in acceleration, space, and MPG.
I lusted after the Type S when it came out, until I realized it is just 0.2 seconds faster to 60 than my MDX hybrid. Couple that with the economy penalty and it's a no-go for me.
Lol, 2025 Aviator goes up to $100k? God help you Lincoln...
Id like to make a correction:
The normal mdx has a 3.5l v6. But the type S has a twin scroll 3.0L turbo engine.
I tried to buy a sport hybrid in 2017. Dealer essentially said its not gonna happen any time soon. Bought a CX-9.
Poller opposites
Love your Vanna White impression in that trunk btw
Finally a touch screen...right in front of my face!
Alex and Travis, Other than track days with your 3 row CUV, I just don't see how anything beats the high mpg Hybrid options in this segment. 🤔
If you care about fuel economy you shouldn’t even be shopping in this category
Do you see people in vehicles like an m3, m5, e63, x3m40i, x5M, Hellcat, SRT, Demon, C8 Corvette, GT500, etc etc. crying about fuel economy as if it’s life threatening? Do you see them pulling their hair out because they only get 13-16mpg?
No you don’t. Why? Because it doesn’t even matter
@@naveenthemachinePeople in all strata do care about range however.
I'm not sure how concerned this segment costumer is really worried about mpg and if they are they will likely be looking at the very highest rated options and very little else. That means if you aren't competitive on that front it's best to stand out in other ways. -Travis
@naveenthemachine, and that's why u have a camry and not a tlx type S
@@springertube if you want range get a Prius. Problem solved
I agree on the looks and the missing hybrid. If I had my druthers it would be a performance hybrid, plug-in, with a distinct tilt to electric operation with sustained electric highway travel and more than 30 electric miles around town with over 400 miles combined total highway range. Probably that means a straight 4, making room up front for a substantial electric motor and maybe even some battery. Series hybrid is also a viable option, but that requires more battery and bigger motors and crippling the highway speed is not an option.
I agree the black cladding needs to be painted to match. It feels more like a base model with less painted bits, and on lighter colors the contrast is too much.
Also about the hooks in the middle row floor… I saw some people mention on Reddit there is a mat available that covers the hooks, but is it an optional accessory or aftermarket they did not say 🤷♂️
Someone I know went to a home Reno store and bought a black carpet sample that covered that space perfectly.
Alex, Going from a GX460 with excellent air conditioning in 100° parked in the sun, after a test drive in a 24 Type S; the airconditioning is weak. Your thoughts? Thx Lou
Alex,
My wife is currently cross shopping this with the new Acadia Denali. It’s a bit of a toss up. Any insights on what you’d pick?
Nice car but being retired the rising prices are just too much to spend. What about towing capacity?
I have a 2016 RLX Sport Hybrid Advance, which I love despite Acura's proclamation that they are skipping hybrids in a quest for EVs. The ONLY reason I will not buy the MDX is that they discontinued the SHAWD drivetrain. I doubt Acura will have an acceptable option by the time I replace my RLX.
With Honda going all-in on hybrids in its mainstream marque it’s surprising there’s no hybrid on the MDX.
Indeed, especially since they cooked up the previous gen hybrid system just for the MDX! I liked that hybrid quite a bit.
Best reviewer in the business. Love Acura.
Best selling 3row luxury SUV in America! Wow. It wasn't long ago (during the beak-nose era of a 5-10 years ago) that Acura's were practically bolted to the showroom floor and the brand's fate felt uncertain. Great job to Honda/Acura for restoring this brand to its former glory 👍
The last generation mdx with the beak is selling better than this version.
@12:38 why doesn't any reviewer show 2nd and 3rd row folded? they only ever show 3rd row folded.
If you wanted comfort, you should have tested the Aviator, or at the very least used it as a comparable.
Acura is always getting it all wrong. The last time it was very true trackpad and now they're shying away from hybrid. Hybrid is the natural progression on the road to electric. Not everyone wants to make the jump to electric now. I could be wrong but let's watch if anyone wants their ZDX.
Why Acura doesn’t have a hybrid model is beyond me
interesting. How it feels in comparison to the Ford Explorer 2025 2.3 and 3.0T 4wd
Awesome vehicle and I'll trade in my 2023 for 1.
They do have a COVER for the middle seat except… it’s in BACK ORDER
I think its pretty difficult acura can reboot the 3.0 engine but ya probably for the next gen
It does look like the Accura people have the art of the angry led headlights figured out.
Simplicity is key, it's easy to over complicate the design. -Travis
Thank goodness Acura didn't devalue itself with one of those overengineered garbage Hybrid systems. Now if they would ditch cylinder deactivation and stop/start...it would be near perfect!
The Lexus TX is NOT stiff competition 😂😂😂. It’s missing a list of features. I mean yeah it will sale because people have no sense and listen to whatever people tell them to buy, but literally every other suv (grand Cherokee L, the Lincoln and the Mazda being the best in this segment) are actually stiff competition.
Agreed. The tx is the easiest competition and the tx is ostensibly nonexistent
The MDX has wiped it out of existence
The grand Cherokee L aviator cx90 gv80 are the stiffest competitors. Not the t, the biggest joke in the segment
The TX is hurting MDX sales which are down almost 30% this year.
Ill take this over the Lexus any day. I feel like Lexus doesn't try hard enough because they know people will buy it due to reliability. Same thing that happened to Honda/Acura which took them too long to rectify.
they definately missed the sales opportunity by not having a hybrid option
Reliability is the key that’s where Honda sucks lately ,, you got the rigth to be a fan but that don’t mean a lot for some ppl
Dang I own a Honda CRV Sport Touring hybrid but this thing is looking FANTASTIC! And they finally removed that stupid touchpad! This may be my first 3 row SUV once my lease is up! We'll see in 3 years I suppose lol
I just wished it had better MPGs and was a PHEV that's literally all this thing needs to be perfect (or at least a hybrid trim)
Honda/Acura are behind in the PHEV game. -Travis
I'm not still feeling the interior dash even after the new updates. All they had to do was take the pilots center console with better materials and the 12.3 inch screen. It looks too cluttered and waste of real estate.
Add in a hybrid option and I would have brought the new MDX. All acura had to do was make a Pilot with a different exterior design, better materials, more hp, etc.
After the jerky, buggy, dangerously slow to respond ZF9 transmission on MDX 2018s in bumper to bumper conditions, i bid good bye to MDX & Hondas forever. How is the 10 speed tranny performing on 2025 mdx ? no mention of it in this video.
Just one note about the trim...I hate wood trim...not a sporty look.
I don’t care for the interior choices, especially that center stack.
Mann, the lexus TX is 100% a glorified highlander. It's boxy, definitely less attractive, and less sporty than the MDX.
Absolutely. The tx is the biggest joke in the segment.
Not really less sporty. And it has much more power and MPG
@@MikeForsythe more power but it’s not faster. And the tx is a lot less sporty than the MDX. No double wishbone or air suspension
And besides who cares about mpg at this point?
@MikeForsythe I said what I said. The TX is nothing but a highlander. That huge ugly front overhang from the side view is exactly the same as the highlander. Tall with skinny tires make it look top heavy. Not sporty at all.
@@mrtripled5061 it has 6 piston brakes, torque vectoring awd, rear steering and either 11/60 more hp and 60 more lbs of torque depending on 500 or 550h+.
But if you are talking about the exterior looks, I do find the mdx sportier looking as well.
Ummm how much? 70k plus huh?
Lexus is dropping the ball…no wood trim? Come on now…I will stick with Acura ❤️
You only just figured that out now LOL?
I kept saying Lexus was severely underwhelming even before it gets driven by anyone
Nah, no hybrid. Make it a twin turbo V6, remove the third row in the Type S, instant success and fierce competitor to the X3M
Lexus Texas?
haha ya TX made in San Antonio
Those new front black vents look so cheap and ugly. The fact that it’s gloss makes it looks worse. Wheels also got a downgrade.
This color combo is pretty disgusting.
Mistake: turbo is a 3.0L
The best selling luxury 3-row of all time just got better. The MDX's closest competitor, the Lexus TX, was just 1% behind in sales, but with the TX's stop-sale/recall, Acura's most likely to keep the segment crown for a long time.
And considering how truly mediocre the TX is 😁 the mdx will be the best selling vehicle in its class
We'll see how much the regal effects buyer confidence but it's certainly only helped the MDX. -Travis
Yeah, the touchscreen really was the most important part of the refresh. That definitely will help the MDX's sales.
I can’t think of a time when recalls affected sales, not including stop-sales. Recalls are good imo. You get a free fix and a free loaner car.
mdx sales are down 30% this year. Competition in this segment is fierce!
Don't want a hybrid at the expense of losing the naturally aspirated v6. What you want is a mild hybrid that eliminates failure points. (starter, alternator, belt driven compressor). Adds electric motor to takeover starting and take-off duties. Adds 1-2 mpg to boot. Keep the v6 and make it more bulletproof...
The old MDX hybrid had a 3.0 liter V6 with 321hp, and averaged 27 mpg.
I wish if it was rear wheel bias
FWD-based AWD is better than RWD-based AWD on snow and ice. In winter, the majority of the vehicle weight is best over wheels with the most power.
SH-AWD is the closest thing you can get to rear wheel biased in a FWD-based AWD. On snowy or gravel roads, I can easily hang the ass end out in mine, but forget about it in my sisters Pilot.
A hybrid system away from greatness?
Everyone fanboys for hybrid tech until their hybrid car has a MGU or battery pack fail outside of warranty. Have fun shelling out thousands for that replacement. Don't forget that Acura also builds these for the customer that plans on owning for 10+ years. Not only for the lease-only customer. The fact that Acura can still build these as non-hybrid and still satisfy the increasingly stricter emissions regulations is impressive.
Hybrid Hell No! V6 Forever!

Tx flirts with Escalade, it doesn’t compete with mdx

Often auto reviewers comments on cars having an aggresive front facia, or an angry front look. Why do we need a car that looks aggresive or having an angry look? Why do I want to be aggresive on the road or do I need to scare other motorists with the looks?😂😂
Again Honda/Acura spoils a perfectly good car with ridiculous, cheap looking, reflective, dirt-displaying, shiny-black plastic.
Is there a tonneau cover to protect your stuff from prying eyes? If so, how much does it cover. All SUVs should cover from the ‘second’ row, back.
Ehhhh...pass,nty! Too funky for me.
It'd be fine if it was slowest in its segment if the gas mileage was there, but the MDX-S is far and away the thirstiest in its competition, with reported MPGs being as bad as BMW's V8 TT ... that's simply unacceptable. They added heaps of piano black plastic to the front of of the vehicle where it's going to swirl and look awful in a year's time.
As for the "reliability" aspect that the fanboys love to harp on, with the fact that this thing has air suspension, that's going to be a multi-thousand dollar maintenance cost that's guaranteed to be there in the not-too-distant future. Tack onto that the fact that this using a timing belt rather than a chain. Cost of long-term ownership is going to be eclipse even the Europeans.
This is a $75k lease-machine for those who refuse to drive anything but a Honda ... which is ironic, since the whole reason for buying Honda's in the past was their long-term reliability and owning them for long periods. Because God knows their build quality is poor and only getting worse ...
If you care about fuel economy you shouldn’t even be shopping in this category
To those naysayers who say “luxury car shoppers do care about fuel efficiency”, you’re wrong. Just flat out wrong
Do you see people in vehicles like the m3, m5, e63, x3m40i, x5M, Hellcat, SRT, Demon, C8 Corvette, GT500, etc etc. crying about fuel economy as if it’s life threatening? Do you see them pulling their hair out because they only get 13-16mpg?
No you don’t. Why? Because it doesn’t even matter
If you want the ultimate luxury of fuel economy and not having to stop at the gas station all the time, there’s a Prius or Camry hybrid with your names on it. Who’s even going to say “if I want high fuel economy, I’m not gonna buy a Prius. I’ll buy a 75-100k luxury car”
There’s no comparison between the MDX and the X5M
@@notsodelusionalbut they’re both luxury cars and the pricing difference may seem huge but in this category 20-25K more isn’t much. Just like going from a car that costs 200K to 257K with options isn’t huge
My point is that in this category fuel economy shouldn’t be a concern
Bro, I disagree. It is possible to have a car that is fuel efficient and luxury. Crown signia limited, Prius prime limited or xse premium, Hyundai sonata hybrid limited, Tucson limited, Santa Fe limited are some of the luxury fuel efficient car. This is like saying “if you want more power, buy a fast car, not hybrid”. Guess what? Prius prime is powerful and is also an efficient car along with its regular hybrid counterparts. Many luxury car shoppers do care about fuel economy which is why they get these trims. Those who don’t are like you, who have accepted luxury cars simply can’t be fuel efficient when they absolutely can. Hell even BMW has phevs for heck’s sake.
Not to mention, even lucid air is a BEV and that is expensive. A lot of old people and even younger people would definitely prefer MDX with a hybrid power train. Hell even Lexus is a luxury brand that has expensive hybrid and plug in.Model Like Lc hybrid, NX hybrid, and RX plug in hybrid and UX hybrid etc.
Oh and m3, m5, corvettes aren’t luxury cars lol. They’re sports exotic cars. Also corvette does have hybrid too. Sure it’s not fuel efficient but the fact that it even has a hybrid for parking lot speed makes a difference. And yes those mfs do cry about fuel economy and then continue to drive these sports car knowing gas prices are expensive lol. So if there’s a tech where you can put hybrids on cars enough to make it powerful and a balance of better fuel economy, even those fools would appreciate it lol.
Also I like $20-$25k is a huge difference and doesn’t matter if you’re rich or regular income. From a rich man’s perspective, sure might not be that much but on a grand scheme of things price differences are huge. I see that you say fuel economy shouldn’t be a concern but A. There are already other fuel efficient luxury cars and some Lexus and BMW models are great example. B. If fuel economy weren’t a concern, people and specifically ACURA buyers wouldn’t even bring it up 9n the first place !!!
Imagine acting like Lucid Air EVs don't exist
