    The Toyota Prius Plug-In combines petrol and electric power like the standard Prius, but features a much beefier battery pack. Instead of just being charged as you drive, topping this up from the mains can give you up to 39 miles of all-electric, zero emissions driving. It’s this neat trick that sees its official fuel-economy figure rocket up to 283mpg and gives the Prius Plug-In a pin-up for company-car drivers.

    This is anything but a balanced review, some reviews are just adverts, this is the complete opposite. Ok, I get it the car isn't for you but people watching this will want to know the good things as well ie what mpg did you manage, what ev range was reached, pretty obvious I would have thought. I actually own one of these , it's not perfect ( what car is ) but it's fuel economy is amazing, I get about 25 miles on battery so the vast majority of the time I'm not using any petrol. On a recent 250 mile journey the car averaged 75mpg and that is sticking to 70 mph on the motorways and using the heater ie driving normally. I like it's 'unusual' looks inside and out. I looked at the Ioniq and the Niro, they were just bland in comparison. It's different to anything else on the road, some of us want this in a car. Toyota should be congratulated, this is one very smart car.

      The EV range IS mentioned, 30 mi, and in your experience is 25mi. so no bias there.
      Also it starts by saying that is the cheapest to run car except for pure EVs,finishing off by stating that is outstandingly economical. No bias there either.As for the looks, to me is unsightly and she suggests it.
      Therefore listen carefully next time. Cheers.
      The same goes for most of the comments below, in fact Toyota is all out to delay the inevitable future of Battery EV's with either this outdated technology or trying to push the nonsense of hydrogen for cars, another legacy manufacturer heading to the precipice.

    Not a word about the fact that the Prius is one of few, if not the only, plugin hybrid that can be used as a pure electric car since it has a heat pump for cabin heating instead of needing to run the combustion engine like most others. The drivetrain is the diamond of this car, not the back seat... Focus on the right things in the review.

      Tuned Motors Aye! 2008 Prius Tspirit UK. Bought 2nd hand 5 years ago. Now has 102,500 on the clock, nothing ever broke down - delightfully over engineered. Just standard dealership servicing, one set of new LRR tyres. Everyday commuter, reliable as a Swiss Watch. Probably the most reliable mass produced technically advanced vehicle on the entire planet.

    It won’t be long before this becomes the Prius and the conventional hybrid is dispensed with. But they need to package the battery pack better so they’re not compromising on passengers or boot room.

    • @johnratcliffe6438
      @johnratcliffe6438 6 лет назад +2

      I have to say that the 37 mile pure EV range is pretty good. I currently drive 10 miles to and from my children's school twice a day in a diesel XC90, a Prius would mean no fuel costs at all aside from the charge, while still having the petrol engine for longer trips.
      I like it.

    I' am totaly happy with the car. Before I had a Audi A4 diesel power from 2008. It is very cool to drive electric with the prius, and I like very much the fact it produce less polution than all other cars (except 100% electric cars). So many people dies every day because air polution... but it seems that no one thinks about it, most people want spotive cars or big fat SUV Trucks... First spotive cars cost you double the price for maybe some minutes you are faster... And think about it driving faster is more risky... Than many people think SUV is much saver that is not true they are only about 20% heavier but they have less street control than sedans... And when everybody would drive heavy cars it would be even more dangerous on streets... Spotive cars and SUV for city that's the stupity of humanity... Prius is the best car for humanity !

    How is this interior old-fashioned? So Golf GTE is what, retro 80s? Nothing about MPG, real-life scenarios, but weird comments about "looking like a taxi driver". You don't buy the Prius because you wanna look like you're driving a hybrid McLaren Supercar.

    Good review from lovely Ginny. Some good points raised. 15 inch wheels is better for unsprung weight and far better ride (so long as not hard ride run flats fitted). On seats, rear should have 3 seats with a plug in centre console option for those that want 2 seats.. or better still 3 seats with improved drop down armrest. Footbrake never worked well on old Volvo XC90..and not easy for some to reach.. centre located manual handbrake is best place, much easier to adjust, and works best. Switches on newer cars can be harder to read with poor symbols and too low for quck adjustment.. this has the same issue. Still can Toyota be beaten on economy & quality in their range? Also, what is typical range at say 50 mph?

    • @lin498
      @lin498 6 лет назад

      Martin James
      Range will depend on your driving style, but as a hybrid you could expect to see a range of about 400 miles from a full tank of fuel.

    • @datathunderstorm
      @datathunderstorm 6 лет назад +1

      lin498 Actually you’ll get a whole lot more than that. My iconic 2008 Prius Tspirit gets up to 600+ miles per 45 litre tank of fuel in summer and around 500 miles in winter (plus minus 20 miles). That’s in a 10 year old “vintage” Prius. The newer ones will get you up to 700 miles UK. And just to be clear, you can hypermile and still travel so fast, you’d get a ticket. And no, I categorically DO NOT drive like Miss Daisy 😌👍

  • @EdgarRenje
    @EdgarRenje 4 года назад +1

    It's a pity that the interior has been designed a bit unlovingly: the central information display, the position and design of the driving selector and the height of the rear centre armrest (the normal hybrid is a 5-seater, which you notice there). From the outside it is very attractive - I found the normal hybrid too exotic. One highlight is certainly the solar roof, but does that make up for the other negative points? Toyota definitely needs to work on the interior design and the infotainment system. Mazda, for example, can do that much better. Maybe Toyota should learn from them....since they're in joint venture now.

    Why doesn'tTesla have solar roofs on their cars instead of all that glass...

    • @davetravels9273
      @davetravels9273 6 лет назад

      because a solar roof achieves virtually nothing and a glass sunroof is much nicer. ;)

    • @maksymtt
      @maksymtt 6 лет назад

      Considering Tesla always wants to have the longest range, I'm surprised there's no option for something like a Carbon Fiber roof, which is way lighter than glass.
      And is solar roof really useless? Considering how hot it gets in some countries in Summer shouldn't they at least consider making it an option?
      If you're on a road trip for some hours, when it's 30+ ºC, it should charge at least a little bit. And maybe that little bit could make some difference, who knows...

    • @davetravels9273
      @davetravels9273 6 лет назад

      Cost-benift analysis says otherwise. A carbon fiber roof on a model S, which weighs over 2200 kg, will have no meaningful effect. Also, most solar roofs can only generate enough power to top-off the 12 volt system and effectively mitigate vampire drain. The solar roof on the Prius Prime, is the most power solar panel ever installed on a car, and according to Panasonic who manufactures the panel, it can give the vehicle up to 3.7 miles per day under ideal conditions (parked outside during the middle of the day with clear skies). In other words, figure 2-2.5 miles on a much heavier Tesla or a 1% improvement in efficiency, which is actually not enough to mitigate vampire drain on a Tesla. Also, most EVs are not in environments that have ideal conditions and most are usually not parked outside, but inside, especially since they are usually plugged-in. www.digitaltrends.com/cars/toyota-prius-prime-solar-roof/

    • @maksymtt
      @maksymtt 6 лет назад

      Ok, I guess the engineers have thought about everything already...
      It would be cool tho, if one day cars could charge completely on their own, cable-free, through the sun, wind, heat, "real" wireless charging from parking spots or streer lamps, etc.
      For now this things are only in sci-fi, but it'll be exciting if they ever make it to the real world

    This review is spot on! I've never before seen a review of this car that picked up a fraction of the details, but you've found every single one of them. Can't think of anything to add. I absolutely love the car. It is a dream to drive - smooth as silk. On a sunny day the solar panel will get me home after work with no power cost at all - around 5 to 6 km. I can run almost entirely on electricity, but in my situation it's also very nice not to depend on having to charge at certain times. I have no charging at my flat and at work, but have free public charging very close to home. My weekend destination is 60 km away, and has no charging close to my destination, only along the way. That's why I got a hybrid rather than an electric. It turns heads all over the place, which is really really cool. I trust it will never give me any trouble. But the non-driving controls are old fashioned and somewhat impractical, as the video tells. The back is just a tad too low for me. There isn't much room in the back, but all right, I can put the seats down - and then it isn't flat back there. Oh, I remembered a detail you didn't catch. The automatic lights doesn't do well in absolute darkness at speeds below 60 km/h, and the controls make it difficult to switch to manual without stopping. Recommend it to anyone that understands what they're getting.

    I regret buying a Prius for the family. The tire and road noise is unbearable. With no music on it's loud conversation. With music on to the point its actually audible, it's like shouting in the car to have a conversation. Another thing the trunk space is deceivingl, it's actually very small (and awkward thanks to the sloping roof). We're switching back to VW for the family car. Fyi the prius is such a crap car I dont mind the inconvenience of driving with two car seats in my 2DOOR VW GTI.

      Santiago Bustos lol then you must have the wrong tires because I experienced it as very quiet. Perfect family car

      Mitchell possibly. What tires do you use? We always replaced with the tires it came with from dealer

      That’s odd. Noise does depend on the types of road surface you drive on. Some will give you an incredibly quiet ride, others an unmistakable roar. This is not necessarily the Prius fault. My old 2008 Prius is very quiet over most surfaces, but I have encountered incredibly noisy ones on occasion. Not the vehicle’s fault. I use 4 x Michelin Energy Saver LRR Tyres. Very quiet indeed.

      Santiago Bustos we have not had any noise problems with our 2010 prius. We loved it! Esp because we saved $$$ on gas! And there was very little maintenance/repair. We regreted selling it but we needed a bigger car. :/ next time we buy a «second» car, i will most definitely choose Prius!

      Joan S. I took another pesrons advice and after replacing the tires the car is much quieter. Unfortunately the size of the car is even smaller now that we're a family of 4 (trunk space most notably). We'll be trading it in soon. My wife does love the $$ and low maintenance though.
