As one who is only used to the German Dub such comparissons are pretty neat. I personally always loved it when Icarus appeared. Like many of the Dragons and Monster designs by Toriyama this one had a way sweet design. Found Icarus always rather adorable but guess since the focus was mostly more on the action they simply stopped using him just like other of the characters.
I do love how Picolo acts more like a dad when Gohan is in trouble than his own dad Goku. Like, he goes straight to "Put him the fuck down, or I'm gonna tear off your arm and beat you to death with it!" levels of daddy bear
As a pro baseball MVP, Yamcha should be the wealthiest character in the main Dragon Ball cast (second to Bulma), so the part about him being in debt of 15 grand doesn't make sense if he most likely has millions.
@@TimTE01 Akira Toriyama did have an interesting way of thematic naming... like the Saiyans being named after vegetables, the Freeza Soldiers being named after fruit, the Ginyu force being named after Dairy products, Bulma's family being named after various types of undergarments... It was quite in vogue (probably still is) for Japanese Anime to do such a thing, Rumiko Takahashi (Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha) did it too, as in Ranma 1/2 the Chinese characters are all named after hair products as shown by Shampoo, Cologne and Mousse (whom in English were voiced by DBZ Ocean Dub regulars)
Aw yeah! I thought I could use some more DBZ material from Phelous! You know, it's funny, I've never been a huge fan of Dragon Ball but for some reason, shows about it fascinate me. Maybe it's just the fans' enthusiasm, maybe it's because there's a lot of weird and interesting trivia, maybe something about the atmosphere of the franchise is just fun, I don't know.
The Japanese title for this film translates roughly to something like “The Ultimate Decisive Battle for Earth”. So, on the whole, Big Green’s title is the closest to the original title 😂. It being awkward is Big Green’s fault, but the generic title? Thats ALL on the Japanese titles lol
Honesty is the best policy. Did we have to wait until the Tenkaichi games to know Turles among many others actually can become a giant gorilla? I think not.
David Gasman is actually a relatively prolific voice actor within his own circle, and he does have quite a bit of vocal range. If you've ever played a Quantic Dream game, you've almost certainly heard him in a (slightly) less silly context. In Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, for example, he's two of the main characters, Tyler and Lucas, and Tyler is a black guy.
It’s funny how so many people on RUclips love to (understandably) take the piss out of the Saban/ocean dub yet like you pointed out, so many of the lines are the same as funimation and it’s obvious they used the same scripts, and yet several times you point out that the Saban/ocean dub that people usually mock did a few scenes and lines better than the preferred funimation dub. Also that “I couldn’t die knowing you’re still alive.” Line goes so hard.
I've seen people defending the "Saiya people" translation on the basis that it's closer to the original text. That's technically true, but in a bad way: It's an overly-literal translation that doesn't really understand how Japanese-English translation work. The original Japanese name for the Saiyans is サイヤ人 (Saiyajin), with 人 (jin) meaning "person" (Japanese plurals work differently), so I can kind of see where they're coming from, but the thing is, "[name of place person is from]jin" is just how demonyms (terms for someone from a specific place; ex. Mexican, New Yorker, Martian) work in Japanese; in this case it's meant to indicate that they come from the planet Saiya. You wouldn't call someone, say, a "Korea person," because that isn't how English demonyms work.
The first time I saw this movie as a kid, was on Cartoon Network with the censored bush. I then rented it from Blockbuster, and I knew something was off. And no, it wasn't just the uncensored bush, but the dub as well. Basically, Cartoon Network had Gohan call the dragon Icarus, while the VHS didn't have Gohan call him that.

KAKAUT!!!!
Yeah, a new Phelous!!!
The tree looks like it came from Avatar's swamp episode
David Gasman voiced William Dunbar and Jim Morales in Code Lyoko, two roles he really owned. Sadly, Big Green WASTES his talent.
I've never seen someone needing to cough so bad they do it in their mind, we need more of that it was great
Moar brain coughing
Tullece beat Goku's ass so bad, he was coughing in his mind.
OH GOD The auto-captions actually censored the Saban/Ocean dub at 8:30
THEY ACTUALLY DID!😱
That’s the first time I’ve ever seen the auto-captions do that. And for the word “midget” of all words too! You’d think it would’ve done that for the N word instead.
@@keijijohnson9754
...does it _not_ censor the n-word? I’d be really surprised if it didn’t.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa “turns into a super Sayian” aaaahhhhh
Oh sorry i was on the toilet
I hate it when that happens.
Classic Phelous videos like this make me feel so much better 😌
Five dubs and the line read that made laugh the hardest was Funimation’s.
“Kaio-Ken... TIMES TWENTY!!!!”
King Kai: Kaioken. KAIOKEN!!!! It's in my ******* name! Like King Kai, AS IN KAIOSAMA!!! That is it, none of you are learning any of my techniques! Neither the Kaioken or the Genkidama!!!

"I'm SonGoku, a Super MyGOD!!!"
This was one of your best reviews yet!
Yeah though he might not be a baseball pro in the movie continuity. TFS has a funny short showing millionarie living his best life yamcha.
"...and you get to make a dub, and you get to make a dub! Everyone gets to make a dub!"
Turles: the original black goku
Turles was better. He had Saiyan Armor.
in the Swedish dub, he's raditz
you make fun of the Dragon explaining everything, but this was legitimately the first DBZ "episodes" i had ever seen
It’s been a while since you last talked about Big Green. This time, it’s Turles’ time to shine!
13:46 That’s an underrated line.
The Speedy dub is basically like those from Art Media/East West with thicker accents.
I've been waiting for this review for a long time.
"Turles" name is meant to be "Tullece", a play on "lettuce".
The naming in DBZ was always weird to me.
They are always puns based on random themes.
...and me thinking his name came from "turnips"...
Those are closer to carrots anyway
Joe Taylor Still weird.
Why do characters in the Big Green dub always talk about having a clear conscience?
THAT'S THE TRADITION!
Honesty is the best policy. Did we have to wait until the Tenkaichi games to know Turles among many others actually can become a giant gorilla? I think not.
Goku with the Dingo dub made me laugh so hard I spit drink all over the place and had to clean up before I could continue.
Okay, Scott McNeil's version of Piccolo confronting Turles is downright BADASS.
Yeah, I'm glad these Pioneer releases exist so you get to hear the early Ocean dub not tied to the silly censorship.
"Scott McNeil's version of Piccolo is downright BADASS." Fixed that for you; you had some extra words in there.

Ngl, I never watched the anime, but I really enjoy listening to Phelous talking about all these different "variations" ;>
Finally! More of Big Green!
Guess I'll post something for the algorithm again, I just want to have a clear conscience...
Wow! Another Phelous episode covering a Big Green Dub... yeah, it has been only like... 3 years since you covered the last one!
A new Phelous Dragon Ball review? It's been too long.
Krillin: Oh no! The forest is in a great big fireeeee
