@mattwalker21 Actually, Jay is the "Founding" drummer for Primus, but did not play on the first few records. The band was called "Primate", before becoming Primus.
Saw primus at the Berkeley square in 1990 with jay lane on 1 side of stage and Tim Alexander across , they were facing each other and played the whole set together!
Great upload. Though Tim Alexander was my favorite, mostly because Seas of Cheese and Pork Soda are my favorite primus records, Jay is still a beast and its good to see him back with the band.
@mattwalker21 Tim Alexander was long before Brain, and pretty much the first drummer of the band, dating back to 1989. Brain was not in the band until 1996. They went through a few drummers way back in the day, but Jay was a founding member of Primus.
I cannot wait to see this upcoming interview you speak of. I'm one of the specks in the audience, and let me tell you, the band was tight and the crowd (myself included) was really into it. Really looking forward to it, and thank you for filming and posting this.
@albertdrums We also do what are called "Off-Beat Interviews" in our magazine and feature other types of drummers/musicians... This footage is for one of those upcoming interviews...
I am in awe struck dumb Saw him recently with dead and co sitting in for billy (on u tube) He’s the man Makes it look easy Fired up dead and co Like I said speechless Looove him
@sickdrummerdotcom Brain was playing with Les/Primus before Herb was around, as far as I know. Brain didn't record anything with them until '96, but he was playing with them and the relationship with Les was there before he joined them officially and recorded the Brown album etc.
2 things: 1.) Buy the album 'Sausage - Riddles are Abound Tonight'. It's Les Claypool, Jay Lane & Todd Huth 2.) Jay Lane will be on the new(!) Primus album.
Jay lane was the original drummer of primus back when todd Huth was playing guitar, then Brain got the offer to join but due to a broken ankle(skate boarding accident) was forced to turn down the gig, then Herb came along, and ler as well,then Tim left in the mid 90's Brain rejoined,then left to go with Shunts n Roses,Herb got back into the fold, then left again and now it Jay Lane...
Nope. He was playing Bosphorus at the time. It's a 20" Rikki Rockett Signature Ride. Sadly, that model has long since been retired. They're pretty rare -- if you see one pop up on ebay, snag it!
Dude for real. Seen them 3 times and have vowed that when they are in a 100 mile radius of me I will see them every time I can until they retire. It's really hard to fuck with what these guys do with a live performance in my opinion
Ive been trying to match that ride sound. I got a new Amedia Rock ride, and its almost spot on. Best ride ping ever, but crashes hard with my Sabians. Damn I love this band
@sickdrummerdotcom Really? That's interesting. My source for the above was a DrumChannel interview with Bozzio and Brain, who said he first started jamming and playing with Les and something or other happened and Herb joined the band and did the first handful of records.
My favoritehas always been Tim but I can't complain Jayski was an animal back there. I saw 8 shows in a row from red rocks to As Fall Frenzy and this show for people who said they were there was in Sacramento not San Francisco
@albertdrums well, its not the best song to show case his absolute skill and pure talent, but i just saw them last night and he was fucking fantastic, hands down one of my favourite drummers. His solo was amazing but a great drummer isnt all solos and fills
All the comments about the snare lol. It sounds like your default alt rock snare from the 90’s. Doesn’t sound bad but dunno what’s people are loving about it
@sickdrummerdotcom Brain is the original drummer, actually. I forget what the circumstances were for Tim Alexander taking his place before they hit it big, however (broken leg or something, maybe). Jay Lane played on a lot of Les' solo projects as well as with Charlie Hunter, I believe.
@SymbioticMonarch You said "being a sick drummer doesnt revolve in always playing blastbeats/double kick" and I was agreeing as in "Yes... highly overrated."
Jay is probably the best technically but obviously Tim wrote a lot of them drum parts so I think tim probably fits primus better in that way. Brain was my favorite to watch
I just shared this with a guy who is seeing Jay Lane tomorrow night in Dead and Company and said he doesn’t like Jay Lane cause he “doesn’t hit hard enough”. You’re going to DEAD AND COMPANY dude, lol.
@mattwalker21 Actually, Jay is the "Founding" drummer for Primus, but did not play on the first few records. The band was called "Primate", before becoming Primus.
10 year anniversary of this video - came to say how great it was Jay got his time in the sun with Primus. One of my favorite drummers.
solid, yet funky
Amen bro!!
Mine too!!
Saw primus at the Berkeley square in 1990 with jay lane on 1 side of stage and Tim Alexander across , they were facing each other and played the whole set together!
I’d gave my right nutt to see that!!
Lucky Bastard!!! (Here they come….)
That is so badass wish I wasn’t -15 for that 😹😹
He sounds fucking great.
Da hell u doin here??
@@gamehog231 watching drums, M8
I'm not a drummer, but I know I'm seeing and hearing something special when I watch Jay play.
I am a drummer, I can confirm you are.
Such a great drummer. So in the zone!
Great upload. Though Tim Alexander was my favorite, mostly because Seas of Cheese and Pork Soda are my favorite primus records, Jay is still a beast and its good to see him back with the band.
@jr0014 Jay Lane is the Original drummer.
@fastaslp Ya was a great show and the Crowd WAS totally into it! Thanks for the Support!
wow i love how that snare sounds
@mattwalker21 Tim Alexander was long before Brain, and pretty much the first drummer of the band, dating back to 1989. Brain was not in the band until 1996. They went through a few drummers way back in the day, but Jay was a founding member of Primus.
sickdrummermagazine brain was short lived, but first
sickdrummermagazine before Tim and i believe Jay did jam before anyone else
@DragonSyndicate1 We will be posting more of Jay with the Interview we have coming from him. I believe in the January 2011 Issue.
San Francisco was lit that night. Sang lyrics verbatim. Best compliment a band can ever get from a live audience.
That snare sounds unbelievably good. Does anyone know what model it is?
It sure does!
It´s a Fibes! (if it´s not, it should be!...)
its sounds like 13inch...cranked sooooo tight
Luke D Powers suprasonic Ludwig
You can get just about any snare to sound this way, especially if you’re playing outdoors.
All you have to do is crank it.
I cannot wait to see this upcoming interview you speak of. I'm one of the specks in the audience, and let me tell you, the band was tight and the crowd (myself included) was really into it. Really looking forward to it, and thank you for filming and posting this.
@guitardude1230 NO thank you for watching and supporting great music!!
Saw them a month after this in Chicago at the Congress theater. Great show
I WANT THAT SNARE!!!
@albertdrums We also do what are called "Off-Beat Interviews" in our magazine and feature other types of drummers/musicians... This footage is for one of those upcoming interviews...
I am in awe struck dumb
Saw him recently with dead and co sitting in for billy (on u tube)
He’s the man
Makes it look easy
Fired up dead and co
Like I said speechless
Looove him
One of their best tunes imo.
Frizzle Fry(89-90), Sailing the Seas of Cheese(92-93),Pork Soda(95-96) had Tim"Herb" Alexander Drummer he also played Woodstock 1994
Refreshing to see real live organic playing with no triggers and things stuck in their ears.
awesome drummer truly enjoyable to watch!!!!!!
I bet this guy has shrines of Stewart Copeland in his house
@sickdrummerdotcom Brain was playing with Les/Primus before Herb was around, as far as I know. Brain didn't record anything with them until '96, but he was playing with them and the relationship with Les was there before he joined them officially and recorded the Brown album etc.

jay lane is still in top form
FUCK YEAH PRIMUS! Masters of Groove!!! So glad to see them back :D
7 line Rogers Dynasonic in the foreground. AWESOME!

Eight years on the internet is like 24 years in real life.
😂
My broski Jayski!
The snare wooooow!!! I’m in love.
Wonder what ride he is using? It sounds great! That BELL!
Pretty sure its an aax omni ride by sabian. Sweet ride indeed.
Nope. He was playing Bosphorus at the time. It's a 20" Rikki Rockett Signature Ride. Sadly, that model has long since been retired. They're pretty rare -- if you see one pop up on ebay, snag it!
I see the Bosphorous logo on his cymbals.
saw them on the tour in ohio at the now famous bottle throwing show.
jay was sick all night.flawless.
Primus sucks way more live. Best show I've ever been to

@InfiniteRhombus
I was wondering about that. Do you know if he uses a double kick pedal, or does he just have some insane heel-toe technique?
@silversnakeseven ya the other stuff we have coming up from Jay is really good a bit faster to ;)
Seeing Primus tonight Melbourne!!!!!!!!!!
Damn... Tim got me into drumming but my god is Jay an awesome fit.
i fucking love this video.

@yuumaha He uses Bosphorus Cymbals...
holy shit, when you get the chance, look at the mallet on the kick drum and how fast it moves, it moves faster than the shutter speed ont he camera.
Jay rocks
jayski is the man
are you ever gonna post the other videos of jay?
@mattwalker21 Right on...
Jays playing is beautiful!!! use caution when listening to Jay he will over power you!!!
My favoritehas always been Tim but I can't complain Jayski was an animal back there. I saw 8 shows in a row from red rocks to As Fall Frenzy and this show for people who said they were there was in Sacramento not San Francisco
This is quite a break from your usual content!

That bass !
Holy shit, fuck yeah! Primus is the shit, didn't exptect this from sickdrummer but it was nonetheless sick!

pretty kit
While not the freshest fish in the sea, she has to be coaxed. Well worth the bait! It can be enjoyed by the entire family.
@albertdrums Being a "sick" drummer doesn't revolve in always playing blast beats/double kick.
what song ?
@lughddepaor combination of both i would suppose
@Zeta9966 What?!
To defy the laws of tradition.
yes he has a double kick pedal, but his feet are still fast as fuck
I saw a whole lot of triplets being played.
@KHfan4ever23
they've been back since 2003 haha.
@Zeta9966 Ah, righto.
@SymbioticMonarch *revolve around

Maybe someday Jay Lane can be as cool as one Michael Arriaga.

@SymbioticMonarch Highly overrated.
