First time I had heard of this group and I happen to see it this morning on Pallada. Really liked it. I read comments and it said a woman is the lead? I will have to check that part out later but this song is great! I looked it up to share it!
I really like both songs, but they are so different. I kind of wish the first one was longer with it's own video. Brittany really gives etheral vocals with the complexity you'd expect in a blues or soul singer. Ian has a polished upbeat Pop style voice. They're both good, but they kind of clash when you put the two styles back to back. They could really produce two different albums of completely different styles with both being good in its own right.
I liked their old style better, predictably enough since I also love Fleetwood Mac, but I guess every band has to have a breakout album. You have to do something toned down and with mass appeal that can be played on pop radio, then once you're popular, you can start being creative. I'll admit though, their first two albums set my expectations unbelievably high, and if this is a breakout album, its a damn good one. Real voices, real instruments, original videos, and lyrics that aren't by committee are something rare in pop music these days, even if it is pop. Chasing Twisters and Unlike Any Other were some of the best songs I've ever heard, but pop-rock-folk fusion (that's what it is, right?) won't get you played on the same radio station alongside the likes of Rihanna and Miley Cyrus. It doesn't really fit into any particular genre, and that's a good thing for the critics and fans, not so great for airplay and sales. I've seen plenty of artists start out great, enter the mainstream with a more generic but still great album, then start experimenting again once they have a listening public to pay their bills. Its great to see that they have the talent to pivot more toward the mainstream while still producing something interesting within the confines of standard pop. As for the video, it looks like a very artsy, alternative video like we all love and expect, while still being tame enough to get high numbers of RUclips views. Striking that balance isn't easy.
I think it helps the video that is seems very Tarantino-esque, with the choice of decor, subject matter and the plain yellow-text overlay. Very reminiscent of Pulp Fiction.
