  • This video demonstrates how spring mix lettuce is processed, and washed and dried to create the spring mix lettuce packs that you buy at the grocery store. In this video, you will see how bagged salad is made.
    This video was taken at Fresh Venture Foods (Babé Farms) in Santa Maria, California, and shows how the different lettuces are mixed together to create the spring mix, and then go through the triple-washing step with sanitized wash water, the drying process and are packed and prepared for shipment.

      Very true I work at one of these plants, only im in the receiving/raw materials area. And we're not just spring mix, were majority iceberg and romaine. A cleaning crew comes in at night and cleans and sanitizes the entire plant bc some forms of lettuce carry bacteria if left to heat. First thing in the morning the entire plant is immaculately cleaned and sanitized, then the process starts over again.

    Makes you appreciate how much work goes into what seems like a simple box of spring mix that you buy every week. The washing and drying is interesting to me because that is one of the biggest conveniences these boxes offer when it’s time to make a quick meal.

    I know they put chlore on regular salad bags but the question if they use chlore on spring mix‼️ and what do u mean by sanitized water

    • @Theproducenerd
      @Theproducenerd  2 года назад +1

      Are you referring to Chlorine? If so, yes, it’s a very commonly used sanitizer in wash water in the produce industry, in general, and especially with leafy greens. If you purchase a container/bag of greens (including spring mix) that’s labeled as having been triple-washed, that means it’s been washed with chlorine or an equivalent.

    how long does it take for lettuce from farmed to shipping?

    • @Theproducenerd
      @Theproducenerd  5 лет назад +4

      It depends, but in all cases, the grower/packer/processor is going to want to get the harvested/packed/processed product ran through the facility and to the customer as quickly as possible since lettuce has such a short shelf-life.

    Hi, will you be able to tell if bleach is used in the so called sanitized water?

    • @Theproducenerd
      @Theproducenerd  4 года назад +1

      That is a good question! Chlorine is a common sanitizer that is used. Companies do not include what sanitizer they use on their labels, but you can tell if the lettuce has gone through the triple-rinse, by there being some sort of indication that the lettuce is ready-to-eat, triple-washed, washed, or something of that sort on the label.

      @@Theproducenerd Is it necessary to wash these salads before eating them? If it's been triple-rinsed I don't see any reason to wash it again but their are a lot of people out here who think it's gross to not wash these salads again. So what's your take?

    Very inefficient production line. Cant understand why they are not using a vertical bagger in instead of that manually operated tray and lid system. More product on the belt and floor than in the containers!
