Two cannons standing guard still. I have a fondness for cannons. My grandpa made small cannons on lathes that shoot shotgun shells and some muzzle loaders.💚

When he says "bottom" and "top" of the bank, is this an upstream/downstream distinction?

I believe he referred to the low ground at river side and the high ground away from the floodplain.😊
