No it does not ajd you know it. When you account for inflation, costs should be lower today if 8ts the same with inflation as it was 30 years ago.
Problem is people don’t know how to inspect a car before buying it or doing research on the reliability of said vehicle. Buy a good one that isn’t expense or hard to repair and you’ll be running for years for only a few grand max. Some people just don’t know how easy it really is.
Cars are more expensive, gas is more expensive, insurance is expensive. A lot of violent/problematic drivers on the road, third spaces are disappearing or becoming hostile to teens and others, etc.
16 year olds don't care about these things though, they should just want to drive. Something else is happening here.
I believe a lot of teens are starting to understand how expensive everything is. My nephew is 18 and the reason he hasn't gotten a driver license yet (and shows little interest in wanting to learn to drive) is because he's researched the cost of buying a car, he knows how expensive gas and maintenance is, and he knows the car insurance rates for the household would go up with a teenage driver. These are things he mentioned to us and things him and his friends talk about in their friend group. Us older generations have talked so much about how much debt we're in that the younger generations are becoming debt- and risk-averse overall.

The adults should want NOT to drive. From the violence and frustration, it seems that driving isn't as pleasurable as it's depicted.
What violence and frustration? The biggest issue is charging extraordinary amounts of money for insurance that most people won't use. Insurance is just a drain of resources during our current recession.
@@user-zu5do6ri6r Gee.. I see loads of frustration with traffic, commuting, having to deal with the fact that when you are in your car -- you aren't where you WANT TO BE - you are on your way to where you want to be (in a best case scenario).
Violence? Dunno.. I rather think that I hadn't been the one to invent the term 'road-rage'. I used to live in LA back in the 1980s and 1990s and they had freeway shootings back then.
When I was a teenager, $20 would get you a full tank of gas & drinks/snacks for everybody. Now a tank of gas alone costs $50+

Yup. And here in Indiana our wages are 11-13$ an hour. It’s fucking awful. No one can survive. I have to get rides at 26 from my mom because I can’t afford a car right now. Shit, I can’t even afford my apartment and I live in the ghetto
In 2016 it cost $23 filled up my 2016 Camry. In 2023, it's around $40-ish for the same car. I got my first car in 2006. It took premium fuel and it STILL only cost $28 to top up. Today, if I let it get too far down it's $46 dollars.

@NostalgiaHDOS i do my own repairs on my f150 my wifes 23 volvo xc60 i have complementary maintenance so i let the dealership do that but when thats over ill do most of it myself or trade in for another new car

It is. I have a 19 year old. My son had no desire to get a license because he is an introvert and all of the people he associated with were playing PC games. ONLY reason I my son got his license, is because he joined the Space Force, and I wanted him to have his license before he shipped out.

@@miltown3920 He did start of on console...we played A lot of games together. But when he turned 12 he got really interested in PC. I do not regret buying all the parts for him. He built his first PC at 13. Because of how his brain works. He is very much into Coding and stuff. He is training to be an offensive Hacker for the Space Force. So...in hindsight.....Everything worked out like it should.

We can't even find a house to move in to, it's 800 dollars for a 1 bedroom apartment. He can barely afford insurance for his car. Hell, he's homeless and he lives in my grandmas RV because we can't afford housing.

I got a flat and had a functioning back-up tire from my last set. I went to Firestone and they said they couldn’t install the used tire (liability) but could get me a brand new one for $415.

I got my license at 16, but things were so different back in the day. First off, California high schools at the time had driver's traing classes so no cost. They provided a car and instructor. Thats history now. Secondly, we lived in a rural are so there was much less pressure learning on those quiet roads, plus the incentive to have that freedom to get away from our house out in the boonies and go to a larger town 50 miles away to shop or go to the movies. Plus car insurance for a teen was vastky cheaper back then. I can understand now why my nieces and nephews take so long (late teens, early 20s).

In Virginia its everywhere for free in public schools and some schools have their own cars and own area to practice! My school has one
My drivers ed was 600 dollars, plus 100 for the test, my grandmas insurance said if I got my license, she would have to pay 1,000 dollars and her insurance would go up. I didn't get my license because of that. They charge her an extra 100 dollars every month because I'm under 21 and I have my permit and live with her. I can't get a job because I don't have any work experience or a highschool diploma, I'm working on getting my HISET but each test is 40 dollars to take, I can't go to college until I pass the HISET, I can't afford college so I have to try going to a community college and getting a scholarship, I have a lot of mental problems due to my parents so I have to have a service dog, I had to save thousands for my service dog prospect, I can't afford a 50k service dog from a program and I can not wait 5+ years on a waitlist so I have to owner train my dog and take him to a dog trainer. America is horrible and they make things harder for everyone, a HISET test should be free and accessible to everyone, but it's not.
I live in an area like that so that’s why I was also able to get mine early

1:23 Teenagers are virtually on home arrest until they get their driver's license. Maybe we should focus solving this problem, rather than requiring them to pay for a car, insurance, maintenance, and driving lessons to simply go to school or visit friends.
But then big auto would have to accept lower profit margins and we know that won’t happen. They will pay off anybody they need to and put out whatever propaganda they need to to keep things the way they are.
I remember seeing this ad from ford that was from the 60s. I think it was about how traveling by car is safer than other forms of transportation, but I don’t remember the details.
The point is that they managed to convince very everyone in the us that they need a car and convinced our governments to design everything so that you would need a car to be a functioning member of society.
When I was a teen, a car took us to the world. Now the world comes to everyone's home. No need to go anywhere.

Back in 1979 (age 16), I took my drivers test as soon as I turned 16. I nervously failed!
Two months later, I tried again. Nearly gave the instructor a heart attack when I barely avoided a wreck (my fault).
Distraught, I put the “getting a license” mindset on the back burner.
A few months later, I woke up one morning and suddenly felt I had what it took to pass the test.
I passed with flying colors! The mental block I had, made me nervous and unsure of myself.
The fear finally subsided.

I also had the same issue but I didn’t learn to drive til I was 18. Neither of my parents really spent the time to teach me driving skills(best parents ever though I’m grateful). I basically taught myself, and passed my test on the first try, so it is possible.
I’d say I’m a very defensive driver.
Just witnessing the amount of BS drivers on the road who have the “I’m more important than you” mindset has me concerned for my kids when they eventually get behind the wheel.

One morning (25 years ago) on the way to work, I wrecked my pickup truck.🛻
@55 mph, two lane highway, I casually went to pass a log truck that was slowing down (for unknown reasons). In the time it took to turn my head to check the right lane (always look before merging), the log truck had slammed on brakes and I had approximately >1 second to react (not enough time to avoid the accident). I plowed into the back of the log truck! Lucky to be alive.
The log truck had a car suddenly stop in front of him (an out-of-towner) and barely avoided hitting it. The log truck’s size blocked my view of the car that stopped. I had no clue or any inkling that I’d need to stop suddenly, certainly not at this spot in the highway.
This event heightened my awareness of unforeseen roadway hazards. I’ve been a very attentive, conscientious driver ever since.

I'm an adult and even I'm afraid of the road rage out here, eventhough you're doing the right thing on the road, ppl get so angry, they even expect you to fly through a red light!!! Think about how scared a teen who's just starting would be smh
For real. The government needs to start funding the police better and have them actually stop bad drivers. Even things that are stupidly simple, like stopping for 5 seconds at a stop sign or driving 20mph in a school zone with flashing lights, don't get done. Easiest tickets ever, come on!

Insurance for young drivers is ridiculously expensive. I had three teenage learners and to insure them all would have cost $1200.00 every three months. I just couldn’t afford it.
So what did you do? Tell them you have to go on your own policy? Or forbid 5em to get a license till they were 18?…everything’s so expensive now, people are giving up..I don’t blame them…

Register them under a different address, that’s what my parents did for me and it saves us 15k in insurance annually

Everything is more expensive. Wages aren't keeping up with inflation. People are stressed and anxious so they will be impatient on the road. There is little to no public transport, instead it is seen as only for the poor, unless you live in a big city.

IMHO, it looks like we've gotten to a point where we can afford a domicile OR a vehicle, not both at the same time.

Several reasons, and I don't blame 16 year olds, even those in their early 20s for being less interested in getting a driver's license and car. From rising number of road rage incidents, to the price of used cars and insurance especially for those under 25. Personally I didn't get my driver's license till I was 23 when I went to a 2 year trade school in 2013 and brought my first car, a red 1992 Pontiac Sunbird convertible, 5 speed manual, for $1400 cash, and even then that was a lot of cash for me to cough up after having graduated high school in 2008 as foreclosure signs littered my hometown and jobs were almost nonexistent for young adults entering the workforce. However I had been driving around the farmland, driving between fields and operating tractors and other farm equipment when I moved in with my stepdad at age 16.

as a young adult with a car, i absolutely hate driving. i hate the fact that my survival rate goes from 90 to 30 percent when i'm on the road. not because of me, but other drivers that drives like they're in a hollywood action movie. we shouldn't need to drive to survive.
We need better public transport.
Still wouldn't matter. Public transport is garbage no matter how well planned out. Why? Because they make too many stops and so it takes forever to get where you want to go. Need to get to the next town that would take 10 minutes by vehicle? Better allow 40 minutes by public bus because there will be 30 stops in between. Then you have to be able to even get to the bus stop to begin with. You can't just keep making more bus stops, the more you add the just makes things worse. How do you go to the grocery store and stock up? You can't because you can only carry so much when you have to walk 2 miles back home from the bus stop. Most people can only manage 2mph walking, maybe 3 so figure another 1 hour walk to the bus stop and the hour walk back home. Now your trip to the next city took 2 hours and 40 minutes. Figure all the walking once you get to the next town to get to the actual place you want and now your up to about 3.5 to 4 hours which could have taken 10 minutes with your own vehicle.
Now, we do have Ubers and taxis, but you do have to wait for them to arrive, but it's a much better option because they are only focused on you and so the trip goes back to 10 minutes once they pick you up.
@@marcuslinton310 Thats what happens to bad bus networks. You assign a single bus to make numerous stops instead of going directly to one or two places. If there were more busses and better planned service, you could have busses that go directly to their stop. Walkable cities also play into this by allowing a person to walk for a portion of their trip, and from bus stop to bus stop. We also act like roads aren't getting increasingly congested, and constant delays from construction.

This is what happens when you remove publicly- funded driver's education classes out of schools and charge a fee for what was previously free...on top of children being less responsible overall compared to previous generations

And you're right... old people do forget they were young once.
I had driver's ed at school. It was a summer program.
That’s a shame. I took driver’s Ed in high school (80’s). Getting my license at 17 (NJ) was a right of passage.
And why is this a problem? As long as they're choosing not to drive as opposed to driving anyway without a license then I don't see why this is a huge deal.

I wasn't in no rush to start driving. I was 20 years old when I got my driver's license. I'm 56 now and don't care for driving to many bad drivers on the road.
It took me until I was 17 to drive and another nerve racking thing is how big vehicles are these days and how hard it is to see over the dash and hood especially when you’re 16 and still growing
As a current teenager I avoided buying a car and just bought myself a small motorcycle (Honda grom), it’s cheap, reliable, and not overcomplicated to understand. Insurance is really cheap for it, gas is super cheap for it, and it requires little maintenance. It’s not the fastest thing in the world, but it gets me around town and until I get older it’s all I really need.
Sounds like a good first vehicle. Just stay safe and sober, too many crazies out there.
Got my license at 16 it was like a rights of passage but now I hate driving I specifically moved to a walkable neighborhood of 90. One time I thought my car got stolen went to the parking garage didn’t see my ride realized I hadn’t driven in over a month and just forgot where I parked. It was on two floors down 🤦🏽♀️
Where in the world is this place that's walkable? I thought such places didn't exist in this country.

As a teenager growing up in Houston, dude, I do not want to drive on these roads without experience. Traffic here is constant chaos. The plan is supposed to be to move to another state but I have no idea where that’s going now

I took driver's ed at school. Saved and bought my first car at 16. My car cost $600. I don't remember liability insurance being required. A couple of bucks could buy gas. I feel fortunate to come of age in the 80's. The cost of owning an automobile is prohibitive now. Our workd makes me sad 😢
I'm 39 and I choose not to have my license 🤷♀️ I was in a traumatic car accident when I was 17. My neck and back are still messed up. Ever time I trun my head I'm reminded of how many idiot drivers are out there.

I freaking agree, not everybody likes to drive, nor not everybody can. And there's so many people who honestly shouldn't be driving. I mean one thing that isn't put out here is that road rage has increased. Accidents have actually decreased but road rage has increased over the years.
I think if kids have the choice to drive driving will be cool again but being forced to drive is just not cool.
Between driving to work and doing stuff on the weekend, I drive like 6-7 days a week. I'm lucky if I get one day off from driving, kinda feels like I live in my car lol. I wish I had a time machine so that I could go back to a non car centric world! :D

Driving is useful... I have to where I live... but man, cars and car-related things are expensive. Kinda understand it somewhat, to be honesty. Probably depends on a specific person's situation.
I live in a small city of 15,000 people will drive two three miles instead of cycling or walking I ride an e bike myself

It’s mostly useful since we’re dependent on it to get anywhere. The majority of our infrastructure is built with cars having priority therefore you typically need a car to get anywhere.
I got my permit on my 16th birthday in 1974, got my license 30 days later. I bought my 1st car (1967 Mustang) & paid all expenses with $$ I EARNED! This phenomenon is utterly alien to me. My grandson turned 18 a couple of months ago, seems uninterested. He went to his PROM with his DATE with PARENTS driving!!!
My brother is 18, The insurance company charged him 400 down deposit and 800 a month for 6 months. I had to help him pay it out. After 6 months the premium went down to 400. More expensive then his car payment which is 280 a month.
So it was 5200 for the first 6 months? Then it went down to 400 for 6 months? Is that correct? Wow they nailed him cause he wasn’t previously insured for 6 months ..they do that to adults too who go too long without insurance, when your ready to reinsure after you get a new car it’s “high risk “ for the first 6 month policy and they rail u…not right , companies are taking advantage of everyone..

@@cgschow1971the 20th will make two years since I got my driver’s license. I’m 21. My first car was a 2009 Elantra, had liability and I was with progressive. They charged me $452.62 JUST for liability, for a now 15 year old car. I have a clean record, I haven’t been driving that long, and that was my first car that I bought last June. I don’t have it anymore cause the Kia Boyz thought they were more entitled to it than I was, so they broke into it. Progressive did nothing to help, so I sold it for peanuts just to get it off my hands. Not everybody is being charged low amounts of money.

I don’t think it’s even too hard to get your license after 18. When you’re 16 if you do it in school you have tests, driving tests and then a long test at the end, that I failed by one point like an idiot. Begged the teacher to pass me😂 of course he didn’t.
Even though my driving tests were perfect and I had already been illegally driving for 2 years without being caught, he still wouldn’t pass me😂 he was known for being a douche, and a women beater. Schools will take whatever they can get these days.
I started driving in 2020 at the age of 40. From my experience, I do think it's best to start on a drivers license at least 18 years old.
I've been striving to attain my DL since 15 years old, finally got my permit at 16 and I've had it ever since age 36/37 because my relatives never lent a hand when I asked for helped.
However, when I got my DL things are expensive now from when I researched cars, insurance, etc back in the 90's.
@@sunshinesunflowerz1647 ,my problem as well. Someone actually gave me the car with no money down, and that's how I started to teach myself to drive. I haven't driven since I took driving lessons in my 20's.
WHAT?! I have been driving since I could reach my foot on the pedal and see above the steering wheel. I have to admit, My parents are country folks....and I learned on back roads of South Carolina. The more experience you have driving, the better you are at becoming a defensive driver. Which is really needed in today's society more than ever. Too many people are distracted drivers.
I've been a licensed driver for 10 years and my year-younger sister still doesn't even have her permit, she just Ubers everywhere or DoorDashes things to the house. But can't fully blame her, I love driving but gas has become insanely expensive and road rage has become the norm in many states.

This has nothing to do with affordability. I grew up poor and everyone I knew wanted to get their driver's license.
This is a shift in culture as the mother pointed out. Young people no longer want to jump out into the world. That's what a driver's license used to represent.
You can jump out into the world without a license though there is Uber, lyft, and etc. I know plenty of people who travel the world and get around well without a car/license I know people with a car and license who only go to work, run errands and come home. Things are shifting people are paying for convenience. I can only imagine the amount of adults who would’ve never got their license if these things were around when they were growing up.
You hit the nail on the head. I also want to add, it isn't so much jump out into the world....but for my son, he had no real friends he hung out with in our city. He played mostly on his PC. League of Legends...and he mostly had friends across the country or in other countries. He was also an introvert.
There’s no car culture or options anymore. And the price. People barely have money to raise kids yet alone get them a license a car etc. that and people suck and are scared of driving. Driving isn’t an art form or a passion for most people. It’s a scary mind numbing chore that they have to suffer through…. It’s odd.

I got my license at 16, saved money for 2 years, got graduation gifts, then had to work 4 months at at least 32 hours a week, to buy my first car. This was many years ago, my first car now is worth more money than I paid for it back then. Not because it’s rare or in high demand, but because the uses car market is trash. It’s no wonder kids aren’t even bothering, what working class kid can even afford to drive? Idn what Id do at 18 now honestly. Maybe get a motorcycle instead and throw bricks through windows in frustration at how screwed I am for simply having to exist in modern USA.
I didn’t get my driver license until my late 20s. Nobody would teach me because I have a disability. And when I finally was old enough to live on my own, I didn’t care to get it yet. Only because I didn’t had the money for a car. But once I finally got a car. I took the driver test, and passed on the first try. The funny part, my cousin who’s the same age as me and has no disability, hasn’t gotten hers yet. She’s too scared to drive lol. I would go nuts right now if I didn’t have a car. I love my freedom, to just get up and go, whenever I want to.

@@tangiechapman6219 Well the writing test I study online they give you a practice test. I liked that more then read the boring book. Then a place in my area who helps people with disabilities find jobs. They paid for my driving lessons. Without their help I wouldn't had been able to afford it.
this is sad I remember being 13 and couldnt wait to drive, my mom would let me drive the car in a empty parking lot and i got my learners when i turned 15. by the time i was 18 i had enough driving under my belt that i felt comfortable going pretty much anywhere. I get what people are saying about maturity but you also have to remember the longer they wait the less experience they have in their older age.. while they are young like that you can still set rules and make them have good driving habits but if they wait until they are 19 or 20 they are adults at that point and just out on the road with no real guidance.
My son is 29 and he didn’t get his license until almost 21. He has friends 30 years old that still don’t have theirs. Lots of adults I work with haven’t got vehicles. We live in a different time now. We have Uber and other transportation means. As soon as I turned 16 I had my license, own car and job.
I have been saying that I do NOT want to drive, but I have been pressured extremely hard to do so. (It was something personal about this one in general)
I am NOT prepared for that when I ride a passenger around.

Many jurisdictions also have graduated licensing. In some places, the restrictions are so onerous that many young people may be giving up on driving altogether.
My son is in his 30s now and he still doesn’t drive. Unfortunately, four of his classmates were killed in separate accidents right around the time he was learning how to drive. In fact, the one accident occurred blocks from our home. I drove by the location hours after the incident had been cleared, and his schoolmates were laying out flowers in an impromptu memorial. You could see where the bark had been torn away from the tree they had impacted. He lost interest, his nerve and any enthusiasm he had for driving. When I asked him about hanging out with his friends, he held up his phone, and said, “They’re all here”.
At 10 years old I had a Go Kart was driving tractors and sitting on my dad's lap steering and shifting a F100 with 3 speed on column. In High School had drivers ed.

I just turned 18 without a car but i have a liscense. My sister turned 18 in 2018, cars cost way less even 6 years ago. Its so impossible to even breathe nowadays. Dont blame us, blame the people imposing hyperinflation BS on the rest of us
I think its also mental health. Im 18, i just got my driver's permit less than a month ago and my first driving lesson is tomorrow. When i was really little i always thought i would be getting my permit right at 15 and my driver's license right at 16. But i started dealing with mental health issues at the young age of 7-8 and as i got older my mental health declined so much that i didn't care about getting my driver's license, because i couldn't care less about anything. And that's very common for people my age and younger nowadays because of social media and talking through text rather than voice.
And also money and time, only the rich have those.
I'm 17. I own my own vehicle, I pay for my own insurance and repairs. It is very expensive endeavour. Most kids I know want to own a car but they dislike the expenses.

My son is 19, and when he was 17 he had no desire to own a car or get a license. He was too busy playing League of Legends on PC. That's ALL he care about...his PC. He has his license now...but it's only because I told him he had to get it before shipping of to Boot Camp with Space Force.
Got my license when i was 27. First day when I drive my first car I was ready to sh¡t myself.
That's why people should learn when they are younger. It's harder to learn when you are older.

Trying to help my little brother get a car and well, they are so expensive now. The days of finding a car for sale on the side of the road and paying $1000-$2000 dollars are over. Not to mention the insurance is insane
I don't think it's that shocking. Where are these kids supposed to go anymore? I talked to my 15 year old nephew and he has no desire to learn how to drive at all. His friends just play PS5 together, and he just orders food from his phone. There's no more malls, skate parks, arcades, bowling alley's or anything else left in town to go to anymore. Time's have changed a lot.

I totally understand the reluctance to get a license as a young driver. There’s fewer malls, movie theaters, and activities to venture off to nowadays. Kids have their friends at their fingertips with the internet everywhere. My one question is why is insurance still through the roof without these younger inexperienced drivers on the roads? distracted drivers” are the main reasons why.

I didn't get my license until 21 cause...
1. No car.
2. The wage i was making wasn't enough to save for a car.
3. The money to save aside for car emergency.
4. It was right after the housing crash of 08.
So really it took a couple of years to even put a down payment on a used car.
I remember getting my permit at 15 then my license at 18. I do recommend getting a license early as possible tho because we all need some form of ID and you never know when you to drive somewhere even if it isn’t your own car.
Kids today are less confident in themselves. Social media and news outlets are constantly telling them they should be ashamed of their race, that they're no good and if you don't have a college degree, you'll never amount to anything! I bought my first motorcycle at age 11 in 1967, with my own money and I drove it everywhere...even to school! I bought my first car, a 1961 T-Bird convertible when I was 14, with my own money and didn't get my learner's permit until I was 15, but I still drove everywhere by myself!

This should be top comment as I’ve noticed this as well along with the cost of everything. I was in the time where I was super excited to get my license and I was the first of my 5 siblings to get my license at 16.
How did you get the money so young? I couldn't get a job until I was 16 because it was hard to find anyone that would hire me. I was very grateful to get a fast food job at a local ice cream shop. Also, great car! I'd love to pick one up someday and restore it

I was born in 64, I got my permit, which we called a 3-65 because it was good for 1 year, on my 16th birthday. I took drivers ed through the school and took my drivers test right after I finished the coarse and passed which was pretty much how most kids did it back then.
The costs are getting too high for parents to bear the brunt of adding teens to insurance, getting additional cars, etc.....then the teens would have to get full time jobs AND go to school. Thats where we are now. Its sad. Things we need that used to be affordable..... are no longer.
My son and his friends just got their licenses. They all complained at the lunch table that they didn’t like driving because it cut into their screen time during that commute.

Are time is more expensive because every restaurant/grocery store figured out they can charge whatever they want so the prices to eat these days are high asf. We have it harder as adults than are parents did when their was a such thing as a $1 McDouble or hotnspicy.

Thank you for making this report. A very important point of view, The covid nineteen pandemic has a big part to play in what has changed the point of view.
Being on Lock down everyone learned how to live in a different way. We have virtual Doctor's appointments, Conversations with loved ones, And almost Everything..... delivery for so many things we used to have to drive for. I believe a driver's license is essential for everyone to have in the household Once they become of age of course.
When I think back on why I wanted my licenses as a teenager in the 1990’s, it was mostly because I wanted the freedom to meet up and hang out with my friends.
As a mother of a 21yo and 17yo, my theories on why less teens drive now are 1) particularly with boys, they do a lot of online gaming and so it’s not necessary to leave the house to hang out with friends; they’re having fun and communicating via the game console. 2) in NC there is a long year+ process just to get to the point of driving by yourself. You have to drive for 60 hours with an adult present before getting the level 2 drivers license. 3) The parents are in no hurry either. We hear so many frightening stories of road rage and human trafficking, that we prefer to drive them everywhere just so we know they’re safe. We tell them “you’re not mature enough yet”, but that’s mostly a delay tactic.
Yes, car prices, gas and insurance are expensive but that’s not reason enough to not have a license to at least drive mom’s and dad’s car. I’m surprised at how many of my kid’s friends get no further than the learners permit. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing…it’s just different now a days.

Isolation is not a trend, its a product of the suburban world that previous generations have created. Kids can't get anywhere without driving, and parents wont let their kids walk anywhere for fear they get kidnapped or hit by a car. So, kids turn to devices to communicate.

Get your license. It is a pretty good accomplishment. Not like graduating, High School or College, but there is something to ticking that off as part of the maturation process. Plus the longer you have your license, the better your insurance rate is when you get a car, and have to pay for insurance.

I was So excited to get my license..it's unbelievable to me that teens these days don't want theirs. I'm glad I grew up before cell phones. I love having my phone now, but I used to just go and do whatever I wanted knowing no one would know where I am if something happens. I think that kind of courage needs to happen for today's kids in some way.
I don’t think it’s a cellphone thing. I’m a teen, and the reason I haven’t gotten my license yet is because I live in Texas and everyone drives horribly here. I’m too worried about driving and getting in an accident. I think having the confidence to drive is a big factor though. My sister and younger cousin are more than ready to get their licenses and that’s a great thing.
Insurance is well over 180$ a MONTH, plus the gas money every week not to mention reregistration, and exise tax every year on it. And what if the car breaks down? That's even more money

Well that’s why you budget, manage and save your money! So you’re ready for unexpected expenses. I paid $4000 back in 2015 for my first car. 2004 Toyota Camry with 80k miles in it. Just got rid of it last year🤣 in the entire 9 years I pure 200k miles on it and maybe $5000 in parts total. Including oil changes. That’s $9000 in 9 years!!! Insanely cheap. Insurance was nothing on it cause I stayed with one company and kept my record clean so my premiums kept getting lower. Excuses are simply excuses. $9000 over 9 years is literally nothing at all if you have any work ethic. I was able to save a fuck ton of money working for $15-17 an hour with that car. 10s of thousands all while living alone. Americans just suck ass with money then blame everyone but themselves when their life gets difficult. Pathetic tbh

This is so true. I have a 20 & 17 year old and the only the oldest has gotten a permit, and has it for almost a year!
Meanwhile one of the local high schools in my city has like 100 parking spaces in their parking lot reserved for students only. Funny cause they never seem to have any cars parked when I would go do deliveries there. But there was always about 300 cars picking kids up after school.
