I just wanted to say thank you for continuing to come out with video's that give us a better understanding of concepts and electronics principles. It makes me want to learn more deeply about these subjects, and gives me a practical application to practice on. Thank you!
That's awesome you still make these one handed controllers. Not being able to game because you lost an arm would be just awful. I'm sure your bringing absolute joy to many amputees.
Cool. I'm planning in the future to fit a wireless Xbox 360 controller into a wired Xbox 360 controller case. I think all I have to do is take apart a rechargeable battery pack and separate the batteries and put them into the handles (this would require removing the rumble motors permanently and removing plastic to fit the batteries) and buy some single battery mounts to hot glue into place to hold the batteries. Then shave down some plastic on the inside back of the wired controller case to make space for the PCB in the pack. then solder a female mini USB port at the top where the wire would normally exit. Boom, slim wired Xbox controller with no battery hump and no proprietary charging connector.
You guys clearly know your stuff! Amazing mod tutorial! Could you do a video on how to repair the micro usb port on the Xbox one controller? My port won't charge the controller or let me sync with the console via usb.
Cool! That's definitely was a killer episode. Great job on the mods. I learned something also, I didn't know about the Hall effect I've never heard of them until just now. :-)
i feel that felix has come a long way since his first appearance. From nearly everyone hating on him to now where i can safely say that many think he's alright in terms of internet entertainment. It must be tough. great work!
A mod-tutorial for the Wii (or Wii U) Remote would be cool, because me (and many other people in the internet) are still playing with it and that way someone can personalisize his Remote.
I've been looking for ways to turn an NES into a synthesizer. I've found a cartridge that taps into the chipset and lets you program music as well as a MIDI NES Chiptune Synthesizer. Perhaps you can do an episode on how to turn classic consoles into synthesizers, I'd watch it!
Ok, this is kinda weird. I've watched your videos for a while but usually skipped the "tech timout" parts because I had no idea what the heck you were talking about. But I'm currently going through my first Electrical fundamentals engineering class and I'm understanding some things.
for the ported hall effect sensors, you could put magnets into a finger on a glove and then just move your finger closer or farther to get the trigger pulls
If dome switches are like tact switches without the shell... Don't they wear out as fast? Also, it would be fantastic if there was a mod (read: if Ben could make one) for the 360 controller to add a 2nd story PCB for the D-pad.
I actually prefer a D-Pad for the button's (A,B,Y,X) because I hold my controller in a nonconvential way where my index finger curls over that section of the controller and i just need to lean my finger in the direction of the button and it presses it. Did a mod like that for the xbox 360 controller after someone pointed it out that I do that with the buttons anyways and it improved my action time by a few milliseconds. Doesnt seem like much but back then I was on an MLG tournament series for Call of Duty 4 and faster action times generally gave me the edge.
I modified my Dreamcast controller so that the cable comes out the top. It drove me nuts how it came out the bottom. I also replaced my original Xbox's GPU fan with a blower from a busted 360 S power supply. It's MUCH quieter and runs about 10 C cooler.
PS3 buttons are all analog, because games can get feedback on not just THAT a button was pressed, but HOW HARD it was pressed. Awesome feature, and I'm not aware of a single game using it.
I'm guessing not because the software is looking for a value given by the hall effects sensor and not just the on/off signal that you'd get from a tact switch. You may be able to replace the hall effects sensor with a potentiometer, but even then I'm not sure the values would be the same and the software would probably still be confused.
Thats exactly what custom controller companies like battle beaver customs do, except they use a button you would usually find in a mouse, which is much more responsive than a tact switch
Actually for a fun fact Sony Playstation introduced analog buttons on the PS2. Reason was for driving games so you can depress the accelerator button (X) or brake (Square) lightly for games like Gran Turismo ect so you're not always on full throttle ect. :)
I have been trying to find out about modded controllers. Its been prob 20 yrs since I done any mods honestly to anything, the last one I think was the ps2 putting a chip in it to burn disk for it to play and the sat cards 20ty some yrs ago for educational purpouse of course lol. I am use to the old chips that you had to make or buy to program the eeprom chips n so forth. But my son is into heavy game play n he is 8 now n asked me about a modded controller and I have looked every where for a tuturial on what chips you had to have n so forthe but nothing. Thanks for the video!!
I have finally learned how to do real graphics in Microsoft C#. I now can do sprite sheets. I thought that adding a game controller would be simple. I have a couple of SNES USB controllers. They do not work with C#. I got an XBOX ONE controller and it does not work. After looking at dozens of Facebook videos, I found one that sort of showed the hack for this. You do a lot on game controllers and were wondering if there is an easy way to read game controllers inside MS C#? My goal is to make some training videos on making simple games in C#. Without a game controller it is just keyboard for input.
so I did the remapping mod, tested all the buttons/tact switches and they seem to work properly besides the B button.. I think I messed up the soldering job because the actual B button on the controller doesn't even work at all. any suggestions on a fix to somehow bypass the B button and have it work with a tact switch?
PS3 buttons are analogue because some PS2 games had touch pressure buttons with different functions for different pressure amount and PS3 had to have PS2 compatibility. Notable examples are MGS2 and MGS3.
With the low cost of arcade stick buttons from eBay I should get around to making a proper Dreamcast joystick. The original kind of hurts my hands. Just a matter of soldering each side of the arcade button contacts to the PCB contact pads.
Sorry to state the obvious, but a 'via' without trough-hole plating isn't a via, it's only a pad. With the exception of via's with carbon ink in them of course.
How about modifying the antenna to increase distance from the console? I know a few people that need additional signal strength but Microsoft does not sell an extender.
Have you added a 3.5 mm audio jack to a 1st gen x-box one controller? if you have can you send be a link to the video? Do you have a pin-out of the multi-pin port headphone connector?
Hi Ben! I am wanting to solder a few leds on my Xbox one controller. They go under the abxy buttons I bought. Where is the best spots to solder to for power and ground? Thanks a ton.
I think that it will be great to have a controller similar to the Wii for shooter games on Xbox or Ps4 instead of a single unit.. you have granates and aiming on left hand and triger and granates on de right hands in games like battlefield 4 could be awesome to pilot a helicopter with that set up for example..
Does the Xbox one controller go back together correctly with the tact buttons where they are at because one other video I watched had them in another spot because he said that's the only place they would fit with keeping everything in the controller that came out of the controller before you modded it?
I really struggle with analog buttons. I can either press all the way or not at all. Can you add a dial and a button instead of a back shoulder trigger? That way I can press the alternative button and get a preset trigger value.
Is it possible to develop gyro plug in for the controller that will plug into the bottom port of the controller and that would bring motion aiming to the controller
do you have any video about mode the n64 controller? i want to move the joystick and Z button to the left side, the Z button could be easy, but the joystick is the problem, for Z button, i can use a push button, make a hole in the left grip and put the button in that place with some hot glue or something, but the joystick i don't know how do it, may be i can cut the central grip and paste it on the left grip and use some wired to increase the long of the conector. what do you thin about that mode controller? bert regarts.
What about single button for two action. For instance. I would click shoot and it would shoot and aim without holding the aim button... or maybe crouch
I'd like to issue a challenge. There's now the files for a 3d printed pip boy shell. Take that, and a Raspberry Pi and build a practical working Pipboy controlled by dials and knobs with as much functionality as you can manage as close to the game as possible.
This is more of a question. I have a family member that has limited use of her right hand. I was just trying to see if there is way to make a dpad like the elite circle shape replace the ABXY buttons on an Xbox one controller??? So basically make a dpad for the buttons. If anyone knows how or has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated. I know how to remap buttons but that's not what I'm trying to do.
An old credit card works best for taking the hand grip plates off. I had to take apart 2 of my new xbox controllers because of little defects, trigger wire out of place, one wasn't screwed together fully etc
So far, I have not seen a mod of control from Xbox 360 wireless to USB (no need to connect the wireless receiver on the PC). It will be possible? Many people are looking to use the Xbox 360 wireless gamepad without the wireless receiver. Especially on mobile phones (maybe add a bluetooth module)
If i wanted to use the xbox one controllers buttons for an arduino project, where would I look to get that information? I need to get the inputs from those buttons but I dont have an idea on how to do it. Do I need a driver for it? Or can Arduino read the inputs so I can make them do something else?
Does the PS4 Use a hol fex (forgot how to spell that) sensor for the trigger? My right trigger broke so I have rubber bands holding it in place to work.

Hi guys! Is their a mod for an older madcatz controller model 88561? Ps3. They apparently do not work anymore since playstation outlawed 3rd party controllers. Any help or ideas would be great ! I love this old guy...hate to lose him because playstation is greedy! ;)
This is very fitting. I just bought a new Xbox one controller today. But I think I'll mess with it in a game & make sure it works before I decide to start hacking it. lol
i know how to get at the screw WITHOUT voiding your waranty: punch a hole through it! (you dont remove it so the statement "Warranty void if REMOVED" does not void it
Show us how to add hall effect electromagnetic sticks on xbox controller series x and s please I would love to have the tech on the gulikit king kong 2 on my xbox controller but as of yet there is no such thing

I think it's possible to play on the keyboard+mouse with only one hand. Do never underestimate physical handicapt people, they'll always find a way.
Glad to see BHS getting back to its roots in recent episodes!

Great tip to solder the wires flat on the SMD pads. Thanks!!
Hey good work on modding for accessibility guys, much respect
i feel that felix has come a long way since his first appearance. From nearly everyone hating on him to now where i can safely say that many think he's alright in terms of internet entertainment. It must be tough. great work!
I got the Tekton driver set from Amazon, has the security torx and tri-wing drivers. I believe it's less than $10 as well.
A mod-tutorial for the Wii (or Wii U) Remote would be cool, because me (and many other people in the internet) are still playing with it and that way someone can personalisize his Remote.
90% of The Ben Heck Show budget goes to hot-glue!
I would say solder rather than hot glue
Ben doesn't use a lot of solder. He uses the bare minimum, and then hot-glues the rest! :P
He does have a lot to solder though, and solder wire is not dirt cheap like hot glue
8:30 - "You know I've never accidentally drilled into myself?"
Good thing to avoid, yes Ben lol
I've been looking for ways to turn an NES into a synthesizer. I've found a cartridge that taps into the chipset and lets you program music as well as a MIDI NES Chiptune Synthesizer. Perhaps you can do an episode on how to turn classic consoles into synthesizers, I'd watch it!

Having arthritis and being a gamer I have to mod all my controllers, I generally take the rumble motors out and bin them (well collect in a big pile).

what, ben heck show on wednesday? did you forgot to set the episode while uploading to private, or is it a kind of bonus content? :)
+David Sn It's thanksgiving, so rather than making people wait or hoping scheduling works, we thought we'd give the gift of an early episode :)
The Ben Heck Show nice gift, thank you for this episode on wednesday, but now I have to wait 9 days for the next episode ^^
+The Ben Heck Show it would be cool how to build a hdmi to atari 2600 mod
I actually prefer a D-Pad for the button's (A,B,Y,X) because I hold my controller in a nonconvential way where my index finger curls over that section of the controller and i just need to lean my finger in the direction of the button and it presses it.

You should add links to your videos for the parts and equipment you use from element14.
This show makes me want to learn engineering and circuitry. The best mod I've done is spray painting a third party Wii U controller blue, hehe.
I modified my Dreamcast controller so that the cable comes out the top. It drove me nuts how it came out the bottom. I also replaced my original Xbox's GPU fan with a blower from a busted 360 S power supply. It's MUCH quieter and runs about 10 C cooler.

Hall sensor: just pull the sensor pin to ground. If you pull the Vss to ground, it’s the same as rapid fire

Oh, wow... I did not know about Sam Raimi's Delta 88!
See? It pays to watch the video right up til the end!
Dual Shocks(PS4 controller) have pressure sensitive buttons, that is why they are analog.
Hey Ben, would it be possible for you to do a video on hardwiring an xbox one controller due to microsofts lack of a wired controller for some reason?
Hello Ben! I love your show. I've got a question: are those ESP8266 modules worth it? I want to make a little Wi-Fi switch.
+donpalmera OK. Thanks!
When you start making some more modified controllers please let me know! Thanks.

a good idea is to make them modular so anyone can costumize them to their likeing ....example...an easy way to swap left to right or right to left

Yeah I made a scuff mod for my PS4 and the solder points are literally the size of a paw in your skin
Would it be possible to combo a PS4 with a PC? so u can switch between windows and playstation, in a way similar 2 the playbox and other combos?

After the face button mod, are they still usable on the front?
Can you do a original NES controller mod where you put an Analog Stick where the D-Pad is?
the Ifixit screwdriver kit dose indeed have a tri-wing screwdriver mostly designed for Nintendo teardowns
any chance you can make a button mapping install video for the xbox one s controller ?
can we swap hall sensors for POT sensors?
why does a rapid fire chip for 360 controller not work on Xbox one controller triggers?
Is it possible to exchange the analog joystick to a steam controllers touch pad? If so, how?
when I played on ps3 I'd use my pointer finger on the right pad. used my middle and ring for the triggers. it worked well.
Does the PS4 Use a hol fex (forgot how to spell that) sensor for the trigger?
My right trigger broke so I have rubber bands holding it in place to work.
Hey Ben!
You should make a LiFi system. Seems pretty cool, but I don't know where to start!
+Jack Boynton We were just looking into this and it looks crazy cool. I think the technology might be a little too beyond us now, but maybe one day it'll be a bit more attainable and we'll use it in an episode.
I have a question can you make a video we're you mod a ps4 controller I want to put one stick were is the d'pad because it's anoying to use in some old games to ended having only joysticks
Excellent video. Would be interesting to mod an xbox 360 controller into an arcade fightgame style controller.
Done.
Put the 2 potentiometer joystick are a problem
Can you guys help me? I Found a mac SE/30 at the swapmeet and it won't boot up. I think the Hard drive is in really bad condition, and the floppy drive is even worse. It turns on, chimes, then makes a weird beeping noise and then proceeds to an odd spinning sound, then it just sits there. I have a working SE next to it, and I was curious, can I boot the SE/30 off of the normal SE remotely? Any advice is appreciated!
Check if the fans are not stuck otherwise it's probably your hdd. Just replace that one.
Have you ever had to mod a controller for someone with only one full finger the rest and thumbs are either not there or they stop at the first joint after the knuckle ??
I only ask as I know someone in a similar position that uses a standard controller and was curious if some of these could help ??
Personally I feel each individual button would need to be moved to within reach of the appropriate finger or thumb .
I have no experience doing anything like this let alone one that I feel is most probably one of the most complex ones .
Any help would be greatly appreciated on how my friend can level the playing field
Ben, come on, even on PS2 buttons are analog, the harder you press it - faster moves car in Grand Theft Auto moves faster and etc. Its very great feature!
With your knowledge of these controllers why not set up a mod controller website and just print money?
Uh what do you do if you want to put the d-pad back on after moving the analog stick?
hello. i was wondering if tou can do an audio jack mod for the emio elite controller for ps4 or remap the back paddles on it?
i need a dualshock 4 mod with a move controller led bulb put on the led spot already provided ..any suggestions
hey how do I get in touch with this guy? I have a friend who needs a custom controller he has muscle distrafie can some one help me out?
Ben, I have cerebral palsy and I can't play rock band normally can you make a controller that can play rock band for one handed people?
how about an xbox one gun controller or adding a arduino gyrometer accelorometer to an xbox one controller so may be other diy people can make there own?????
How difficult would it be to swap the right stick with a trackball?
A trackball reports direction and speed, while the sticks' potentiometers report X and Y positions. You would need to write an algorithm to convert the readings, and a new circuit to do the processing.
Should I give thanks that the episode is early due to Thanksgiving?
horrible frieght has a tool kit with security bits and the triwing for cheap, not the best quality but works for 10 bucks. Might be better to get the ifixit but for emergencies its an option.
If I am trying to desolder a connection that has glue ontop, how do you recommend I remove the glue to get to the solder?
If its glue gun glue, IPA (isopropyl alcohol) works like magic
Do you know if there is a firmware to make the xbox 360 controller into a xbox one?
Could you please do a tutorial on how to replace the dpad dome switches with actual switches
Hi guys! Is their a mod for an older madcatz controller model 88561? Ps3. They apparently do not work anymore since playstation outlawed 3rd party controllers. Any help or ideas would be great ! I love this old guy...hate to lose him because playstation is greedy! ;)
ps4 joysticks are the easiest ones to mod . ( check out console customs and get the remapping mod board )
How does this vary with 2nd ND 3rd Gen controllers?
This is very fitting. I just bought a new Xbox one controller today. But I think I'll mess with it in a game & make sure it works before I decide to start hacking it. lol
i know how to get at the screw WITHOUT voiding your waranty: punch a hole through it! (you dont remove it so the statement "Warranty void if REMOVED" does not void it
How could you do the back tac button mod but for the left thumbstick when you push the thumbstick down eg in cod it's knife
Can u do one with a older remotes like the wii and gamcube remote(s)?
Show us how to add hall effect electromagnetic sticks on xbox controller series x and s please I would love to have the tech on the gulikit king kong 2 on my xbox controller but as of yet there is no such thing
Is it possible to install custom firmware on xbox controller?
That analog stick mod makes the analog stick kind of high lol
how would one make the buttons rapid fire like the bumpers on a xbox one s controller
what kind of engineer are you?
