It depends on the type corner. Generally speaking, race drivers don't like understeer and prefer slight oversteer as it helps to turn the car in and they can stay on the gas. Having said that however, on a race track drivers prefer slight understeer only on high speed corners as it's less risky in case the car misbehaves.
@rock3tcat That's exactly what it is. The clutch is right next to one of the gear shifters, on the back of the steering wheel. If you look closely there are two paddles on one side, and just one on the other. Two gear shifts, up and down, then the clutch.
well, yes it's possible, but really very very hard. you can try to sort of pump the steering (straighten and turning hard a few times), or use the handbrake to balance the slide. easiest thing to do is to tap the brakes a few times to transfer more weight to the front. but the key thing is skidding tyres tend to remain skidding, and gripping tyres to remain gripping. a good driver will do his best to avoid being in a severe understeer condition.
He has a very good second driver, and he has a lot of experience, he has raced turbo F1 cars as well. He was also teammate to both Senna and Schumacher (I think he's the only one to have done that).
@rock3tcat the clutch is only used during the pit lane and when the car is at a stand still at all other times no clutch is used in the manual sequential gear box
@surferbrah84 No I did some research into this and what you see there is the clutch lever, the shifters are located on the outside of the steering wheel. F1 cars aren't fully automatic so they do have clutches that are manually operated..
@isftish in understeer, a driver can easily pitch the car mid corner and power over the resulting slide, instead of hesitating and pushing the car wider on the exit...much quicker with the slide
actually two clutch levers. Let the first one out instantly ... thats biting point... then slowly feed out the second clutch and pull away. this is the only time they will use it. From then on every gear is just forced in to the next tooth by hydraulics.
Well, they going to use the same GP corners but Abbey, when they reach Abbey they turn right instead of left, use a small straight that leads to another left corner, then take that inside straight at 1:15 and retake the actual track at Brooklands.
@INeverSeenThisBefore i love the strats of nascar races, but you have to admit that most circuit could have been a little bit more challenging. and BTW, just one corner? ever seen the people at the tour le france?
@copperlocks1 the stig is ben collins, but he's been sacked because his name got out due to a court case. Collins is now driving in the british tourning car championship.
the truth is if your car oversteers, you can use the throttle and steering to maintain control. but if your car understeers, if you brake you probably lock the front wheels. if you throttle up a bit, that's just going to lift the front end, further reducing front end grip, and you just drive straight off, with the front wheels pointing sideways helplessly. all you can do is gradually slow and hope the front end regains grip. if it doesn't....off you go.
@nashvilleraidersfan A Honda Formula One car, running with minimum downforce on a runway in the Mojave desert achieved a top speed of 415 km/h (258 mph) in 2006. According to Honda, the car fully met the FIA Formula One regulations.
@materm: not in a f1 car mate, a slide will flatspot the tires causing lack of grip through vibrations at high speed. but even if you didnt know that you could use common sense: "hmm.. f1 cars I see on tv dont slide much.. why i wonder? maybe because its slower"
There has to be more to it in Nascar than what meets the eye. I mean, people fancy such things because they see some sort of skill level in it that requires a great deal of practice and patience. It's like American Football, people hate it because they don't seem to understand the complexity that comes with the sport. So, I would most certainly assume the same thing with nascar.
@yomama629 watch them in a four wheel drift 3 inches apart for 200 laps side by side by side....bump drafting and nudging all the while. They're all good.
I think martin brundle is the best commentators in formula one miles better than murray walker, even though he was enthusiastic. Brundle is very knowledgeable he asked questions about the wear on the brakes in the Spanish gp (Valencia I think) and brawn, Ferrari MacLean werent worried about it the start and most team had smoking brakes at the end!
A lot of ranting about NASCAR and F1 here. Why can't you enjoy both, they are completely different and both are full of skilled drivers. NASCAR is more popular in the US sure, but in the rest of the world F1 is by far the most popular. The 2010 season has been one of the best for many years, amazingly talented and skilled drivers, and engineers. Its about pushing technology as much as it is about the perfection of driving a car, driver and machine in harmony, a pure team sport.
@Rossi46Woho You haven't watched too much F1 lately I take it. There has been plenty of overtaking this season and lots of excitiment in the races. No it's not like Nascar but I wouldn't want it to be. Moto GP is motorbikes and I do enjoy that very much but it's not the same thing. F1 is what it is and there are millions of fans who love it and don't feel it is boring.
This sums it up: I am American, i have watched ZERO NASCAR races and at least 4 F1 races flag to flag. F1 is much better. Can't WAIT for Codes F1 2010 to ship (just need a good wheel now)
i love it when peopele say F1 isnt a sport, you dont know how fit you have to be an F1 driver, and the amount of control you need on it, i'll never be an F1 driver so i want to get into working for a team :S
Ok, I have the lessons, now I need the F1, hahaha
He's using the other section of the track wich it's gonna be used at 2010 GP, YEAH! Can't wait to see that.
Such an incredible sport. It needs to become an Olympic sport!!
Nothing beats the sound of a Formula One engine. Nothing. That sound is hypnotic. I want more. I need more.
how awesome was helmet cam!

dont you just love martin brundle. such a professional and his knowledge is unbelievable

gotta love that v10 scream. yummy!
who ever did the editing on this video is really good KUDOS :)
He has a very good second driver, and he has a lot of experience, he has raced turbo F1 cars as well. He was also teammate to both Senna and Schumacher (I think he's the only one to have done that).
intersting video, altough i new most of it already.
nice, know i know why i struggle to keep my car on the road, when i go to work in the morning, im constantly using opposite lock on most corners
@rock3tcat the clutch is only used during the pit lane and when the car is at a stand still at all other times no clutch is used in the manual sequential gear box
@surferbrah84

@rock3tcat Pretty sure it is, clutch is located on the back of the steering wheel and he is moving it with the revs.
Martin Brundle set a car up to oversteer. In the wet. And didn’t crash.
@isftish in understeer, a driver can easily pitch the car mid corner and power over the resulting slide, instead of hesitating and pushing the car wider on the exit...much quicker with the slide
Very educational video, with digital annimations. Good job
Me too, but we would have to train for at least a few months to handle just a couple of laps in a F1 car.
I love that helmet camera.
Someone already said that this should be added to real GP's, and I agree.
actually two clutch levers.
Let the first one out instantly ... thats biting point... then slowly feed out the second clutch and pull away. this is the only time they will use it.
From then on every gear is just forced in to the next tooth by hydraulics.
the camera from the helmet looks awesome. i wish they would use that in f1. much more realistic than the overhead view
3.5 G in a corner is about the max at the moment. 5 G under braking from a long straight, such as the back straight at shanghai.
now thats a V10 F1 engine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the real F1 sound that u fall in love with!!!!
@801burton If you accelerate the weight will transfer to the rear making the front go light, hence more understeer.
Martin Brundle he used to be a F1 driver he used to commentate the F1 races for ITV and since this year for BBC.
Well, they going to use the same GP corners but Abbey, when they reach Abbey they turn right instead of left, use a small straight that leads to another left corner, then take that inside straight at 1:15 and retake the actual track at Brooklands.

@evoben24 technically, nascars are faster. Rusty wallace did a test at talladega without a restrictor plate and the car hit 242 MPH.
@801burton i'm sorry but if you throttle, the front end will not hunch down, but will lift up, causing more grip loss of the front tyres.

great vid thanx! I did understand more than before!
@odv18 The point in the video he was referencing was when the car was pulling out of the garage, so yes, it was the clutch.
This is from ITV F1 coverage perhaps from 2006 since the car is running Michelin rubber
Awesome special effects!
awesome video! Thanks for posting!
This is car mechanics that we already know. You don't need an F1 car to demonstrate the effects of under/oversteer.
@iTzzEuphoriaaaaaa ...on the straights, yeah. Not on the turns, and depending on wings/camber setup.
Excelent video!! I love it!! Thanks Martin Brundle!! =D
The clutch is only used for take-offs so when the driver releases it, the car will bite into gear
There has to be more to it in Nascar than what meets the eye. I mean, people fancy such things because they see some sort of skill level in it that requires a great deal of practice and patience. fantastic video, thank you!
there is one corner at Istanbul where the drivers sustain 4.5gs
Martin Brundle from england he comentates on f1 in the uk and is a ledgend
@rock3tcat Yeah they are paddle shifters
Just listen to that V10 at the end. Gosh.
very cool lesson!!
@yomama629 watch them in a four wheel drift 3 inches apart for 200 laps side by side by side....bump drafting and nudging all the while. They're all good.
Where is this from? And where can I find more videos just like this?
I think martin brundle is the best commentators in formula one miles better than murray walker, even though he was enthusiastic. @antraxxx89 no you look at the led shift indicator lights haha
0:45 is that the clutch he's operating?
Really good video thanks...!!!
@rock3tcat Left = gear down & right = gear up (?)
@Rossi46Woho i guess webber flying upside down under a bridge on the streets of valencia is boring, LOL
@2697jam Darn!!..that sucks..I rather like the anonimity of THE STIG..I did not hear about this turn of events..thank you for the update.
i would love to become a f1 driver just for the sport
great vid! really cool
The sound of the shifting at 1:40 is unreal.
v10 is an eargasm
it helps to have a good car these days
thanks for teaching... NOW LET ME TRY IT! :D
WOW...che spettacolo!
!De acuerdo, genial!
the sound of V10s
!
this video is badass. rly
al last! a decent youtube video on F1
haha! it's like CSI meets F1....Brundle is a hero!
@Rossi46Woho You haven't watched too much F1 lately I take it. There has been plenty of overtaking this season and lots of excitiment in the races. course dude, me too
you loved the adverts too?
@rock3tcat yes it is the cluth
@Garrison64 i have no argument left. you win.
nice one webber
great
this cars are Semi-Automatics it doesñ't need clutch you have to hear the engine to know when's the right time to shift :S
nice driving but how about the DRS?
This sums it up: I am American, i have watched ZERO NASCAR races and at least 4 F1 races flag to flag. F1 is much better. Can't WAIT for Codes F1 2010 to ship (just need a good wheel now)
@evoben24 Well actually he does dislike it he just likes the fact that it is a very underestimated sport I guess.....
@rock3tcat Yeah, they only need the clutch to move the car from a standstill. It isn't needed to actually change gears.
i love it when peopele say F1 isnt a sport, you dont know how fit you have to be an F1 driver, and the amount of control you need on it, i'll never be an F1 driver so i want to get into working for a team :S
@Gamer9716 yeah no shit... notice the wet track?
Lets go drive our F1's now.
so few settings on his steering wheel compared to wheels nowadays XD
1:36 oversteers while is supposed to udnersteer xD
Jeez, that steering wheel looks ancient by today standards.
@matteaton88 I totally agree
No it's the 2004 Jag in Redbull livery.
@PrandGrix4 i love btcc. it's like watching hooligans on wheels :)
wow didnt know that they were using that part of the track in 2010, is that true?
MARTIN BRUNDLE IS A LEGEND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cool video
what applies to F1 applies also to Touring Cars
All depends on your driving style.
