  • How to change a chainring on an E*thirteen LG1 crankset. This is on my YT Capra but it is the same process on any bike with this crank set. Some other crank sets are also removed in a similar way such as the SRAM SX, NX & GX cranksets, however the chainring may be attached in a different way.

    There is no need to touch the outer 10mm Allen key bolt at the centre of the drive side crank, this is just a retaining bolt for the inner 8mm bolt to push against, to self extract the crank off the spindle.
    To remove the chain ring lock ring. Use an E*thirteen lockring tool and a Shimano hollow tech 2 bottom bracket tool or a large adjustable spanner. Be careful not to slip! Chain ring teeth can do a lot of damage 😳
    Ensure the spacers are put back in the same order as before and also ensure your new chainring has the same offset. This ensures the chain line is the same, if this is incorrect it can lead to more dropped chains, damaged to your frame, increased wear and a really annoying noise when riding.
    When putting the chainring back onto the crank check any markings on the chainring line up with the centre of the crank. This is very important with an oval chainring as it ensures the timing of the chainring is correct. If this is not lined up with an oval chainring, it will have the opposite affect of what it is designed to do - make pedalling a lot harder instead of easier.

    My ringlock got bent when i fell. Is there any rung locks compadable with this?
    I cant get the original one where i live

      Ohh no, unfortunately to my knowledge the only lock ring tool I know that will work, is the Ethirteen lock ring tool.
      Is there no way of possibly straightening the lockring tool you have bent in a vice?

      Thank you 😊 so far...
      -feels like I can pull a harder gear more of the time
      -less fatigue but not by much
      -and less traction on tricky climbs (not what I hear others saying)
      Hoping to get a video out eventually about what I feel the difference is for me.

    What if i dont have the outer Bolt, Will it still work the same?

    • @JakeBrookesBiking
      @JakeBrookesBiking  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hello 👋 if you don’t have the outer bolt the inner bolt will have nothing to push against and the cranks will not self extract.
      Firstly if you have a crank extraction tool, try this first. Be careful thought as I’m not sure if the threads are universal.
      If not then completely remove the inner bolt and tap the inside of the crank arm as close to the hub/ spindle as possible to knock it off the spindle. If it’s a little stiff try putting some penetrating fluid on it overnight to free it up a little.
      If possible use a wooden mallet or plastic lump hammer to avoid damaging your crank arm.
      Do any of your mates have Ethirteen cranks? If so, borrow their outer bolt to remove your crank and then give them it back when you are done 😊
      I hope this helps

    Hi, how do you know which side is outside from the chainring? Your old, like mine, has the infos on the inside. Your new chainring was mounted with the infos outside? Help :D

    • @JakeBrookesBiking
      @JakeBrookesBiking  2 года назад

      This is often tricky…. The teeth of the chainring will usually be offset to where it mounts to the crank. The chain line / teeth, should sit frame side of where it mounts to your cranks. In other words, put the chainring on the crank arm so it is leaning away from the crank arm, not towards it. This is if your chainring has any “offset” which most chainrings do.
      If your chainring has no offset then it doesn’t really matter.
      I hope this helps 🙏

    • @JakeBrookesBiking
      @JakeBrookesBiking  3 месяца назад +1

      Hello, personally I would take it to a bike shop or order the right tool. I know it means waiting for the tool to arrive and there is more cost. But otherwise you risk damaging the lock ring or chainring.
      However if you don’t want to order the right tool then you could use a large set of grips to remove the ring, I have also heard of some people using a hammer and flat bladed screwdriver to tap the lock ring free.
      I hope this helps 😊

    is it compatible with shimano chainring and shimano bb?

    • @JakeBrookesBiking
      @JakeBrookesBiking  8 месяцев назад

      Hello, the Shimano BB is compatible yes, I am currently using a Shimano press for BB with these cranks and it works a treat. However the chainring unfortunately needs to have the Ethirteen specific fitment. To my knowledge the Shimano chainrings do not work but I may be wrong.

    While unscrewing the 8mm the 10mm started sliding out (straight not rotating) destroying the thread. Did I do something wrong?

    • @JakeBrookesBiking
      @JakeBrookesBiking  3 года назад

      No you haven’t done anything wrong… that shouldn’t happen though. If you defiantly have the same cranks as me then this seems like the threads are ruined.
      I would take out the 8mm completely and maybe try to tap the crank off the spindle with a plastic mallet. It may wiggle off slowly but be careful not to damage the spindle or crank.

      Not that I am aware of unfortunately. Is it possible to use a spacer on each side of the bottom bracket but this only adds around 3/4mm in width. Is your crank spindle too narrow or too wide?

    Im having an issue with lateral slack in the crank would taking the crank off and putting it back on fix it ?

    • @JakeBrookesBiking
      @JakeBrookesBiking  3 года назад +1

      It could yes but it’s hard to say. Sometimes the bolt just needs tightening a little more, sometimes it’s a sign that the bottom bracket is on its was out and sometimes it’s just the plastic adjuster that sits on the inside of the left crank - it might just need adjusting. Turn it one way and it tightens things up / expands to take up more room on the shaft and reduce movement.
      I would take out the crank, clean and re-grease everything and put back together. It might just be a little be of grit stopping things sitting correctly.
      If it’s only a tiny bit of movement and it’s still there, I wouldn’t worry too much but the sooner you can sort this the better. Unfortunately bottom brackets don’t seem to last that long.
      I hope this helps 😊
