I honestly wouldn't even call this training, more like easing into a habit preferably from an early age.
I've never in my life owned a dog but I've always had cats. And as the myth has it cats hate water n all. Not if you get them used to it from an early age. I can bathe my cats, clip their nails and touch them absolutely anywhere. All stuff I've gotten them used to from since they were kittens. Occasional bathing incase they're incapable of grooming themselves well enough when they get old, nail clipping for my own and my furnitures sake, full tolerance to any touching for vet visits and at home checks.
My cats never get pissed or angry when I touch the supposed cat no-no areas like stomach or tail.
      Practice makes perfect.

I've never had to train any of them. I simply ask them to perform a task and reward them when they figure it out.
Every dog you create a trusting bond with will do their best to meet your expectations.
It's up to you to make your expectations as clear as possible without becoming aggressive and creating more nervous energy.
A dog will always seek to please their pack mates. Be a pack mate. Not an owner. It's really that simple.

My current dog hates being washed ( she was a rescue and is very strong) after 8 years she is a bit better but to be honest I gave in and now take her to a groomer.
I have just managed to do her nails over a 5 day period ( with treats) rather than 1 nail every other day!
I have washed many dogs (5 of mine and others 4 ).. Cleaned hamsters and guinipigs, including ears and nails. Helped remove skin which hasn't shedded fully from a snake..
I got Ella at a year, she had been alone on a farm for a bout a year, so was very good with small animals, but. Everything else was new even playing.. The rescue was great, but I have and will never leave her in a kennel again... If I can't get a home stay with people she knows then I don't leave her.
I never want to test how she would cope in a kennel.
But Ella does not like her front paws being touched, esp her front right paw...
But let's me hold them at times.

My first service dog used to hate baths until I bought a lick mat and put dog safe peanut butter on it and she LOVED baths after that. I also trained her to lay on her back between my legs when I clipped her nails. Before I started clipping her nails I would rub her belly for a bit, then I'd clip her nails and rub her belly for 10 or 15 minutes. She absolutely loved belly rubs and every time I pulled out the nail clippers she would get excited. With my current service dog, he hates getting his nails clipped and he doesn't really like baths but he doesn't try to escape the tub, he just stands there. So I train him a bit before I bathe him so he's excited and food motivated so when he jumps inside of the bath tub, he's still excited and wants treats. So I give him lots of treats and praise and it makes the experience better for both of us!

EXTRA pro tip for my long haired dog owners who go to self serve stations in a pet store with elevated tubs, teach your dog a "load up" command and work with them on getting in tubs, similar to the trunk of a car. Makes bath time SO much easier amd less stressful for you both. 😊

Tip 4- make sure you don’t have a bad back cause you’ll be bent over the entire bath time

    • @jlhn

@Tango Down2x2x Nope, I'm 23 and my back is fine, still, after washing my Shar pei my back hurts a lot.
Mind you, I also have a chihuahua, but I don't wash her on the sink because she tends to try to jump, and when she's on the floor she's very calm and cooperative. So I only hurt my back more because I have to bend even more.

Please do NOT flip a large dog like that. It can cause GDV/bloat in large dogs with narrow chests, progresses quickly, and is fatal if untreated.
“The twisting causes the distended stomach to press onto large blood vessels, disrupting the blood flow to internal organs, including stopping the blood flow to the stomach and spleen. Dogs who experience GDV go into shock quickly. It can also affect breathing since the swelling limits chest movement.”
