    Ive been a therapist for 10 years and I've heard some doozies but the level of gross negligence in this relationship is unreal. People enter into therapy when they are at their most vulnerable states and from day 1, Ike was hunting. Marty just didn't know he was prey. I stumbled upon this story while on a long road trip and browsing podcasts to listen to. I was completely hooked on this story. I even pulled over to eat just to listen more intently to the story. I tell all my colleagues about this podcast. Everyone is stunned. Then when I found out that Will Freaking Ferrell would be making a show out of this, I was soooooo happy. I've seen it a few times. It's just unreal. Rule #1 that you should pay attention to when entering into "any" relationship, don't let them separate you from your family and friends!!! This entire story is Red Flag heaven.

    Abusive relationships are like the frog in the boiling pot of water. The water is heated so gradually that the frog doesn't realise he's being boiled to death. Of course no person jumps into an abusive relationship on day 1, but the predatory person ramps up the abuse so slowly the victim doesn't realise and is gaslit into thinking it's normal.

    The house in the Hampton’s was Marty’s families home. The shrink didn’t make him buy it or a 18 hole golf course or a swimming pool.
    He certainly gaslighted Marty as he was a vulnerable adult. The strange thing was the shrink thought he was doing nothing wrong. Marty wasn’t the only victim.

    I finally got around to watching this show and I enjoyed it. I couldn't stand Ike. The first clue he was manipulative and phony was at the frame shop in episode 1, when Marty paid the bill. But gotta say, Marty consistently pissed me off even more. In the end when he says he's an idiot, and the sister Phyllis says no he's not. I was like, YES HE IS! How could you not, or want to acknowledge the shrink was manipulating his friendship for Marty's money. It took 27 years to finally cut Ike off?? I mean come on. The Projection was so apparent. Marty was a filthy rich man. But a sad sad man at that too. Tragic

    Thanks for the insight on the story behind all this.
    I was always liking Paul Rudd and I was with Ike from the first episode but from there and close to the end I just hated his character and what he’s able to do to Marty in a situation where he was desperate for help !
    Still like Paul doh !
    I know Will has nothing to proof, but damn he does always ! Mostly to me because it’s not even characters I would „like“ in the first place, but they grow and they are well acted.

    Ike was being paid about $27 an hour for 12 hours a day ( about the hours that Ike would be available to Marty ) so $3.2 million seems like a lot but if he was to say he was on call to Marty and worked for him as a consultant for Marty’s business It doesn’t seem that outrageous. Of course we know it was basically a friendship that Marty was financing. Yes it was unethical. But Marty has some blame as well. He wasn’t A man with low IQ. He’s quite intelligent I personally think Marty liked to be a part of the “cool kids” lol. I do. He chose to push his family away. He didn’t want his sister to have a say and to take Marty’s new life away from him. Listen to him talk on the podcast. I don’t hear a victim. Just don’t 🤷‍♀️
    Of course I blame Ike mostly. He was the professional,but just not as much as the show Betrays The show makes Marty seem almost slow. But he’s not at all, he’s quite intelligent and opinionated, not someone you could push around. I almost feel like Marty needed someone to blame for HIS actions when trying to reconnect with his family after what HE did to them He had previously said horrible things to them, evening sending a nasty letter to his one niece who I believe was about 11 at the time.
    I think the author heard an interesting story from his neighbour and Decided to write about it. But it’s one side. As we know You can change the whole story by who tells it. Remember Ike was never charged with anything nor did he have to repay any of the money.
    Just saying lol.

    • @producttester5462
      @producttester5462 2 года назад +1

      I can't help but think maybe you are or you know Ike? Kidding. Well, Marty's epiphany finally came, so he definitely thinks clearer now. He was gaslighted at the right circumstance and so it was practically easy to sway him in any direction after that. Ike did the same to his other patients, and practiced coercion when he didn't get his way. When you're in high society or a celebrity, you don't want that kind of attention, so it was easy to do the same to his other rich patients. It was emotional blackmail and harassment, and if you are the type of person who find it difficult to say no, you would be the perfect victim.

    • @davidmartin6575
      @davidmartin6575 Год назад +3

      as a licensed therapist I can tell you, this is 100% the fault of the professional for lacking discretion, professionalism, boundaries, and many other things. Read the code of ethics that all shrinks are bound to and you will understand that it always falls upon the professional to act professionally. There are many rules we follow but the one that really stands out to me is, "dual relationship". We are not supposed to have dual relationships with our clients. That means that we cannot have friendships, romantic, relationships, business, relationships, or any other relationship outside of the initial reason for us meeting. So technically, he should have never become his industrial psychologist, because he was initially his one-on-one psychiatrist, and by becoming his industrial psychologist, he created a dual relationship. An ethical shrink would have referred his client to a person that specializes in that field. By creating a nonprofit together, that was another example of a dual relationship. By living with him is yet another example of a dual relationship. We cannot expect our clients to understand the code of ethics that we follow. Why would they know that? Just like I don't understand or know all of the ethics of my medical doctor. It is also in the code of ethics, not to take advantage of clients. This shrink had no boundaries and should never have been available to any client 12 hours a day. Nor should they have been living together. I can go on forever, but I think you are getting the point. It was hard to watch this.

    • @Starshine1321
      @Starshine1321 Год назад

      In addition to the other comments, I want to add that you need to research the story more - the author did not write a one sided story, he was a neighbor and witnessed these things first hand. Yes, he did talk to Marty and sympathized with him, but like any other journalist he also interviewed Ike. Ike continued to threaten legal action if the story was published in NYT (where it was intended for), which led to him creating the podcast instead.
