    I agree with you regarding building guitars by hand. There is still so much more to learn regarding craftsmanship before turning to a CNC machine. I'm trying to learn luthiery through modding existing guitars and that offers a lot of challenges already. Hopefully by the end of 2021 I will at least have one custom built guitar. In the meantime I'll keep track of your progress, since you're doing such a fine job. Keep up the good work!

    • @Dreamdancer11
      @Dreamdancer11 3 года назад +1

      Go for it...modding existing guitars is perfect to learn some skills and the results are actually great but psychologically you cant feel a guitar truly yours unless you built it from scratch...have all the details about the build first...and then purchase all the hardware beforehand and your job ll be a lot easier even if you have limited tools or space.If you have patience,measure...10 times cut once and wont get overexcited and rush things, you WILL build an excellent solid body electric guitar that ll be truly yours.Cant put a price on that.

    It was an awesome build to watch. I'm starting to really write again (stopped around 2012) and i've only had guitars with typical metalcore EMGs and now that im writing alot more lead driven music i can really hear the muddiness in my tracks. Been looking at either a headless or super strat styled guitar. The Holcomb signature prs has me eye atm. Good luck with everything!

He’s said that as long as there’s been some kind of alteration, he doesn’t mind if people use his ideas. He also said that he’s done it, but he’s always put his own touch on it, like you have. This long ass chilled out video series was just what I needed to lean back and to reevaluate things during these crazy times.
    The ultimate synergy between a human and his instrument must be the step of building one for themselves. There must be some force of evolutionary origins behind the satisfaction that we get from physically creating an object end-to-end with our own hands that's meaningful to us and which is a statement of our sense of aesthetics, work, dedication, passion and vision. This is such a cliché thing to say that I almost threw up writing it, but it all clicked for me when I've watched your series with no commentary and no background music. Same goes btw for furniture, housing, gardening, etc... When we buy a manmade object we intuitively try to search for the soul in it that it's creator intended to put in it. So fucking hard to get that magic when everything is mass-produced nowadays which turned our materialism into something empty and bleak.
    Keep putting out vids for the people here. You're not out to collect virtue points, you're truly trying to create a bond with people by sharing your point of view and discoveries as if everyone were your trusted buddy already. That honesty radiates and resonates. Much love from Hungary,

    • @MilianMalivukMusic
      @MilianMalivukMusic  3 года назад +3

      Thank you so much for this very heartwarming comment. It's exactly what this building series was supposed to express. You can buy everything for cheap nowadays and we start to forget how things are made, we lose interest in how they function (probably due to the fact so many things that used to be analog and understandable switched to digital chips, so it's "computer stuff" inside that is abstract to most of us). Creating something like this is purely analog (except for the design in this case, but you could draw this by hand too), understandable and tactile. This manual work somehow engages parts of the brain that most of us don't use, the benefit of crafting and thinking in real life 3D has a noticeable effect on general creativity in my opinion. I share knowledge and experience in a way that would have inspired myself some years back to make music, pickup up the guitar and some tools. I'm glad it has a positive effect on other people.

    Very clever design. I watched all of the videos and was mesmerized the entire time. Beautifully done. Maybe next time, since it's only a three way switch, you won't need that tall blade. A simple three way toggle like used in an SG might be easier in such a thin body.
    Congratulations on the beautiful guitar.

    • @MilianMalivukMusic
      @MilianMalivukMusic  2 года назад +1

      Thank you very much! It is a 5-way blade switch in fact! But you're right, a 3-way toggle (with a push-pull for split) would have been easier to install, although I think it doesn't quite fit the aesthetic of a modern instrument such as this one!

    Tips for leveling frets: Draw a chalk line down the fretboard centerline before cutting slots, set up some guiding blocks to keep everything straight, and just keep sanding with a radius block until the chalk disappears. This makes the fretboard perfectly level, which means the frets are perfectly level right as you hammer them in, and little to no fretwork is required apart from dressing the ends. Takes like 7-8+ hours. This is Eric Schaefer's technique, acoustic guitar builder on youtube. I built a guitar with him in his workshop and can verify it works.
    If you route the radius beforehand it would go much faster, but you might want to chalk the entire surface then

  • @Unchainedmaple888
    @Unchainedmaple888 3 года назад

    If you do a spokewheel truss rod adjustment point at the bottom of the neck, you can make the leftover headstock piece smaller and the string pull straight because you don't have to drill around the truss rod hole.

  • @azarea

    This upper horn looks very ViK to me :) Glad you're happy with the guitar, it looks great !
    The build series was awesome, with a kind of ASMR quality to it as well.
    I expected the raw materials cost to be higher as well, especially since there are plenty of pickup options that don't run you 400€ for the pair. Factoring in the manual labor is of course a different story if bulding for other people, but when building for yourself like you did I'd almost see that time spent as a benefit instead of a cost.

    • @MilianMalivukMusic
      @MilianMalivukMusic  3 года назад

      True, no need for ultra customized pickups! I even heard those pickups from axetec called Iron Gear aren't that bad even, and they come in at around 60£ a pair which sounds too good to be true. I really need to try them out!
      And yeah, the path is almost the destination itself in a project like this.

    Fantastic work (as I commented in previous videos)! I noticed this is a 5-way switch, but you have 2 pickups, so I am wondering what is your usage of the 5 positions (I am sure there is one): are you splitting the humbuckers with given positions?

  • @lawabidingcitizen5153
    @lawabidingcitizen5153 3 года назад

    Thanks for the video! I'll probably have to use one of these websites for a fingerboard as I don't want to completely cheap out on a fretless build and it's next to impossible getting decent fingerboard wood here in Luxembourg, especially without a bandsaw or space for one to make my own, although I'll probably still add polyester to improve the wear resistance since I'm not a huge fan of the look of ebony so I'm ruling ebony out for now. Since it will be a headless bass I'm trying to make some linear tuners myself, I'll see how that works out. Cheers!

      Hi Grant, you might want to check out the bass guitar build series by Crimson Guitars, which was my source of tricks to carve the neck. You essentially split the surfaces in half every time and create smaller and smaller flat surfaces until it gets rounder and rounder. This way you can control the symmetry.

      I had some lying around that I shortened. I don't exactly recall if I drilled out the diameter of the screw or half a mm less. Either way, I would advise to invest in threaded inserts as this is a more elegant and durable solution.

    I was excited to hear that you will speak about the tools. Although I don't have the space, I would like to know what the 'basic' gear needed is.
    Also, great playing at the end.
    Out of curiosity, what are you writibg you thesis on? (I work at a University to help students with their theses)

    Doing it with your hands is way more valueble than a CNC machine... it has your personal energy on it. To me that's why it came out that good.

    Amazing work!!! What did you apply the danish oil with on the body? Was it a scotchbrite style pad?

    • @MilianMalivukMusic
      @MilianMalivukMusic  3 года назад +1

      Yes for the first coat I rubbed it in with a scotchbrite style pad, then only a towel or some heavy duty wipes will do the following coats

    Awesome build! I don't know HOW I missed this when you were doing it!
    One question on materials that you didn't cover: where did you source the brass for the headpiece and the ferules that the strings go through behind the nut?
    Thanks!

    • @MilianMalivukMusic
      @MilianMalivukMusic  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! I found that piece of brass for the headpiece in a local hobby store by accident. I would have preferred a thicker piece so that the string balls would disappear entirely. The tubing is from my dad's toolbox!

    Really looved the build, and pretty useful info too, but I must ask, if you would recommed the silos, bc it seems you don’t like them that much and they are quite expensive lol, great vid as always!

    This guitar, with true temperament frets would sell like hot cakes. I myself would love one with a darker natural finish and silver or gold hardware with a black tailpiece and nut. Beautiful guitar!

    • @MilianMalivukMusic

      I don't think true temperament would sell like hot cakes because it is unbelievably expensive and complicated!

    • @TahaNasser
      @TahaNasser 3 года назад

      @@MilianMalivukMusic you mean to tune? It's pretty simple you just need a tuner that gives you the cent measurements. Apart from that it's just about getting the fingerboards from TT. They have a custom shop and make necks to order. You should really look into it. It's obviously the future imo.

      @@TahaNasser True temperament is not better than equal temperament, it's just different. We're used to hearing music in equal temperament for decades and the slight imperfection is what makes it musical I think.

    You might want to take a look at axetec for switches and pot meters etc. Bought some parts recently from there and it all feels well made and was considerably cheaper!

    • @MilianMalivukMusic
      @MilianMalivukMusic  3 года назад +1

      Yes axetec was my go-to for the first and second build, however when I ordered parts for this, I just got the stuff from suppliers I would order anyway to save the hefty shipping costs that axetec charge. Their stuff is good though!

    incredibly beautiful guitar, one question, what are your thoughts on the Silos, they sounded great in your demo, is there any reason you want to replace them with the Legendary, cheers

    • @MilianMalivukMusic
      @MilianMalivukMusic  3 месяца назад

      It's hard to say how they compare, I never heard both brands in the same guitar. These Silos were in my Markline headless which sounded completely different with the exact same pickup set. I have no intention of changing the pickups in this guitar though! I started using Legendary after this build.
