Greeting's from Ireland, I live in rural Ireland and I have a small front garden with over fifty pots of perennial's and three flower beds. I used to plant annuals in pots but with the rain we get here they would turn to mush. There is noting more exciting than when a plant starts to flower.
Great video, Steph. Super information for the newbies. Love your presentation and all the practical info you share with viewers. So glad I found your channel recently
I probably sound like a broken record but I am so appreciative of your videos. I learn so much about plants for my new zone 7a (w/DEER!) from 9b & I am also greatly inspired by you. So... thank you!
Great informative video, for the beginner and us with more gardening under our belt. A lot of great reminders for me... like I need to add more evergreens and pay more attention to spacing. Happy Gardening!🌷❤️⚘️
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for watching, I'm so guilty of not spacing things properly, even with experience its easy to fall victim to it lol. Evergreens are so great in the garden, they offer so much structure, and something pretty to look at year round.
Thanks for another informative video! Like you, I have many of these shrubs and perennials In the gardens around our home, and still learn something new each time I watch your videos.
Hello Stef I love your videos u explain everything so good I have learned a lot from u over this year I garden in Zion 7b I have been gardening for some years now but really got into into it when covic came . but they u for being there for me u been so helpful Thank u.
Must give Oh So Easy Italian Ice Rose a try. Stays a bit smaller than the knock out rose, but it blooms like crazy and the roses smell amazing. Also the japanese beetles dont seem to like them very much. At least not as much as they like my knock out roses.
Great video, I do have annuals like Mums and Geraniums etc. that I pop into my unheated garage and overwinter in their pots, I don't water or do anything to them but pull them out in spring, water and watch them grow! Growers out there don't want you to know it but they are much hardier than they tell you.
Steph, Even though I am not new to gardening enjoyed your video. Always appreciate your videos Wow, your little lime hydrangea's are beautiful. I am just starting to plant in front of the house and this shrub would be great for a border. Thanking you for the idea!
Steph (and George) - I am not a beginner. I started following you for your Japanese maple garden and I’m looking forward to building my own by the end of this year. I so enjoy your friendliness, joyful attitude and teaching spirit. Thank you for sharing! ❤ xo
Hi Christi! Thank you so very much for including George in your comment, he smiled and said thank you. How fun that you are also going to be working on a Japanese maple garden. They are such beautiful trees. Thank you so very much for your kind words, and thank you for being here 💚
Something else for beginners to question is if the grass/perennial spreads or multiplies by stolons, bulbs or just the roots. And how fast. Some are notorious in only certain zones, others in all zones.
Hi there, thanks for the feedback and suggestion, but I deliberately kept this video somewhat basic and straightforward as to not overwhelm those who are new to gardening.
@@HookedandRooted oh, I'm sorry Steph! I meant that for Beginners to heed, not at all a critique! I've had several plants creep and I didn't know they would. Because that info is often not on tags. I love your channel and all your info, would never complain. Alysen xo
@@alcg3981 No worries Alysen, I totally understand. I thought it was a great suggestion, so many things to learn when new at gardening. We are starting here with plant shopping 101 💚
Great video. I have 2 lace leaf Japanese maples one on each side of the garden up by the house and it must have been all the rain we’ve had because they have just taken over. I’m always afraid to cut them back cause I don’t want to kill them. ❤❤❤
I’ve been checking my big box every week to see if they have any sales on annuals yet 🥲 no luck. I live in a zone 7b and want to put yellow ranunculus next to some iceland poppies under a tree.
Hi Mal! Thank you so much.. Old Navy! the whole outfit. Their denim coat is at least 5 or 6 years old now. But the linen pants they have every year, and the luxe tee is my favorite! So soft and comfy. My sneakers were new balance 237. Thank you for your kind words 🥰💚
@hookedandrooted I love your hand movements. I would be so disappointed if you stopped moving naturally. You would lose the quality of you and your excitement if you stood stiffly while talking about the flowers. Everyone has their own opinion. Please keep making your videos the way you see fit. Evidently, the many people who follow you enjoy the way you present yourself!
Hi Sarah, If you dig a whole for a plant before you plant it, spill some water into it, and see how fast it drains. The goal is for it to absorb and drain pretty quickly. If the water sits for a bit, its not well draining. There are ways to amend soil to improve drainage such as planting a little higher, and using good quality compost. Also, here's an article I found: www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/soil-fertilizers/making-sure-soil-drains-well.htm Hope this helps. -Steph 🌱
You can knock off aphids with a strong stream from the hose. Then you can treat with neem oil by spraying in the evening once the sun is no longer strong. Hope this helps.
Hi Linda! That is a great question. Usually, by how fast your soil dries put after a heavy rain. Here is an article I found which provides some detailed information and even a simple test you can do by making a planting hole, filling it with water, and timing how long it takes to drain. Hope this helps, and thank you so much for watching. www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/soil-fertilizers/making-sure-soil-drains-well.htm
Are you affiliated with home Depot? I live in Northeast PA and at my home Depot they are just letting hundreds if not thousands of plants dry out and die. They're putting ferns in the Sun and shade plants in full blazing sun and they are just wilting away in a matter of hours. It should be a crime to do that with all those plants. Why don't they just give them away if they're just going to let them die? I know you don't have the answers. It's just crazy to me and I have a hard time not picking up a hose and watering them myself 😂.
Hi there, No, I am not affiliated with any garden centers or nurseries. I have had others make similar comments and it's a shame and makes me sad hearing about the conditions of the plants in some areas.
I have heard somewhere that the nursery part of the big box stores is a loss leader. They want to set out the plants to draw people inside to purchase other things like grills and mowers, for example.
I recommend gardeners buy organic local and support non toxic environs like the stores you frequent. No disrespect but look at your local garden center that is biodiverse. Great video otherwise ❤️
I agree. It is best to shop local (whenever possible) and I often visit and support my local independently run nurseries and farms. With that said, I regularly provide gardening education while visiting these larger garden centers as the environment is just more conducive to it and these stores are accessible to many, while not everyone may have a local nursery nearby. Thanks for watching 🌱
We love your educational videos. Plz don’t take this wrong but the hand movements/jazz hands are too much. We’ve noticed this in other folks’s videos as well. It’s not needed and it’s distracting. Again we love you!
I love Steph and I think I have watched every video on her channel. Never have I noticed excessive hand movements or "jazz hands" as your comment stated. I think people like Steph because she is genuine and knowledgable. Her presentation is like she is just naturally talking to us about gardening. I do not know anyone that does not use their hands when they talk or converse. Some more than others but we all do it. Question, would you have said that if you were there in person with Steph just talking gardening? Stating "Don't take this wrong, BUT" almost always precedes a comment best left unsaid.
