Hi Garden Friends! Happy Thanksgiving to those of you in the U.S. Come hang out while I get the garden ready for winter. Its the end of the season, but taking some time to do these steps can set us up for a great start in spring. In this video I share my 5 steps for winterizing my garden: *Putting Away Patio Furniture, Benches, Statuary, Water Fountains & Birdbaths, and non frost hardy pots/planters. *Bring in Plants that need overwintering ie. anything grown in a pot that is not hardy in your zone. Check out this video for more details 👉 • How to Overwinter Pott... *Disconnect your hose for winter storage. In the video I go over this process step by step. *Decide which plants you'll cut back in fall, and which you will leave until spring. I have 3 categories of plants which I clean up in fall, and I share them with you in this video. *Provide insulation to any plants that have exposed roots. Add a layer of mulch, compost, or leaves to protect your plants against fluctuating cold and freezing temperatures. Also, cover or protect any plants that are only marginally hardy in your zone, or plants that have flowering buds that might be sensitive to a deep freeze. Hi, Steph! I think some people don't understand that subscribing to a youtube channel is FREE! The word subscribe implies that there is a cost associated with it. So, I think it is perfectly fine to remind viewers to subscribe and that it is free. Great content today!😊
Great advice, especially on how to empty the 100ft hose (I have the same one this year and was wondering how to do that!). Also-you’re lucky to have a (younger) strong and helpful hubby to help you carry all that (a sofa!) to put away for the winter. I’m 61 and on my own when it comes to moving pots/garden things for storage. Cheers!
Hi Steph, I garden in Minneapolis, MN. Your videos provide so much great information. You are so knowledgeable & give us great tips for how to work our gardens smarter. Although gardening is so much fun, it can be a physical workout. Keep the videos coming! I am proud to say I am part of your 15% viewing garden groupies😃.
Everyone - please hit the subscribe button - Steph brings such amazing gardening content and is at the top of my list as one of the best gardening channels! Thanks Steph for all you do for the gardening community!!
Hi Stephanie Even though I’m in zone 9b I totally love and appreciate these “To Do”videos. They remind me of what I may have overlooked (like my hoses and grasses to name a few). Again thank you for your tutorial and Happy Thanksgiving.❤
Thank you Steph! I'm almost done with all of the fall chores. One more pot to put away and that makes it official. It was fun watching you do your chores. Happy Thanksgiving to you, George and your sons.
Great ideas Steph! I’m going to try to get more success with seed planting gomphrena next year . I planted 72 plants from my seed and only got two plants! Here in SC we have a warmer springs and I actually planted out my gomphrena seeds into the ground and got about 10 plants last summer. Mine actually worked better in the ground. I will try again to plant them inside next year because they will become bigger plants. I read an article recently that said Gomphrena is easily propagated from cuttings! So I saved three small plants from outside. I’m going to try that way too. I love these plants!🙌🏼
Hi Steph and George, you make a lovely team! You reminded me to protect my hydrangeas and figs! Thanks Your home is designed beautifully. Double doors to your basement 👌. Yes please a link to the solar fountain ⛲️. Looking forward to your seed haul video. And Christmas planter decor. Happy Thanksgiving 🍁. Love from California zone 9b.
I’m so happy I do not have to do this you guys have extra work 😢 it doesn’t frost or snow here as we are on the north coast of Australia 🇦🇺 this is so interesting to know Steph thank you for sharing all from the land Down Under 🐨🦘
I leave my concrete stuff outside and I cover them with frost covers or old pillowcases and then plastic garbage bags over that. And for metal benches I buy covers that cinch at the bottom and then they are protected during the winter. All of my other resin items go into the shed with delicate concrete items. Metal and wood yard decor also goes into the shed. My outdoor chairs they stack and I cover them with stackable chair covers which cinch at the bottom. My hoses which I leave connected, get drained out and then I cover them with heavy burlap coffee bags while they're hanging on their hooks and then I put plastic garbage bags around that with bungee cords. And of course all my garden beds are protected by mulched leaves, but I mow up all the leaves on the lawn to prevent mold and fungus. The deck umbrella gets closed and gets a heavy contractor's bag pulled over it with bungee cords to hold it down, and all my pots that have shrubs in them are wrapped in burlap coffee bags and then mulched over with leaves. All my terracotta pots get turned upside down on a metal stand against the back of the house. My bird baths stay out uncovered except for my solar bird bath And they get covered with large contractor bags and bungee corded at the base. The potted plants that are not hardy in the zone get put into the greenhouse mainly all my succulents. And then the other plants that don't fit into the greenhouse go into my garage. I have a small oil filled heater which takes care of the space and increases the temperature by at least 15°. The greenhouse is perfect because I can turn the grow light on during the day due to lack of adequate sunlight. And the heater in the greenhouse keeps the temperature about 15 to 20° warmer than the outside
Thanks Steph for another great video. I always learn something new. This time it's the recommendation regarding the Karl Forester grass to cut back in fall. I didn't do this last fall and the grass wasn't as tall this year. Now I know why! Love your channel !
Great tips for the garden surviving winter!!! Quite a bit of work to do but worth it. Btw, Ive got a 1980s manual lawn chopper too. Great invention and good for small lawns.😊
Very useful and helpful. I too cut back my peonies and leave the coneflowers for the birds. I also deadhead my hydrangeas as we usually get one or two ice storms and some heavy wet snowfalls that will break the branches if we leave the spent flowers. Looking forward to your spring bulb video. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! 🦃
Hi Steph 👋 Thank you for sharing all the great tips. I really enjoy your gardening channel. Such a wealth of information and inspiration. Wishing you, George, and family a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving. 😊
Thanks for this video Steph!!! 🫣I always forget to disconnect my hoses in winter 🥶 this video just reminded to do so!!!! lol Happy Holidays to you and your beautiful Family!! I look forward to your future videos!!!
Hey Steph from a Nova Scotia friend. I enjoy your channel. I garden in a zone 6, so am very comparable to you in gardening choices. Keep doing what you do. Already planning and getting seeds for next year. Starting some plants next month to get a head start on next season. Have a great Thanksgiving and holiday season. Happy Gardening. 🎄
Thanks for informative video. Strange weather we’ve had so far…beautiful days, cooler nights but should change next week. Hottest, driest summer in 20+years. Lost plants due to heat and have replaced. Some perennials still blooming (mums, angelomia, celosia and others. Good to know some really have seasons! Thanks for sharing and have a nice Thanksgiving 🦃🍁🦃
Hi, I still have snapdragons in the ground, do they self seed? I grew them from seeds & planted them in different places to see which area was the best.
Hi Steph, Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. I thought that solar birdbath would be an excellent Christmas gift to add to my list un fortunately they are no longer in stock maybe a mothers day gift instead. Thank you and George for the video the push lawn more brought back memories.
Hi Karen! Oh I'm so sorry to hear the birdbath is no longer in stock. Perhaps it comes back by spring. I have really enjoyed it. So glad to hear the lawnmower brought back memories. Thank you, Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃
Great video Steph!! I would love for you all to do a compost for a project!! Also Looking forward to the bulb planting in the plastic containers. I did bulb lasagna in mine but moved them to my unseated garage for the winter as I am afraid they will freeze in the planters. Do you leave your planters out all winter with bulbs in them?
I also planted spring bulbs in pots for first time and also put them in my unheated garage and covered them with a blanket. Im in zone 5a. Not sure when to take them out of garage.

From the 80s. 😂 No, those manual mowers are a lot older than that. 😂😂😂
