    Yeah, definitively seems like a bass that you have to play the one you end up buying, ordering online feels risky. Anywyays, great video.

    There's a more fundamental design issue than just the abysmal QC that lets the misaligned instruments out of the factory. The pickups are fundamentally too small.
    Consider, as a thought experiment, the gold foil pickup design (this bass) compared with a traditional jazz bass. Gold foil pickup magnets are traditionally ceramic. Conventional jazz bass pickups use magnetic pole pieces.
    First, the gold foil jazz bass. If the instrument is perfectly aligned, and the magnet is directly below both outer strings at rest, then both outer strings are pretty close to the outer edge of the coil. They are probably *extremely* close to the outer edge of the magnet. They have to be, just because of the size of the housing! So when you pluck that E string, the string will be moving outside of the area above the magnet. This loss is *asymmetric*: it only happens when the string is moving away from the centre, not towards the centre. If the magnet is much larger than it would appear from the housing, then the pickup must have fewer windings in the coil. Those are pretty much the only options.
    Next, an conventional jazz bass. Each string is (at rest) above a location between two magnetic pole pieces. So each outer string is both directly within the magnetic field and, when plucked, moves back and forth over the individual magnetic pole pieces. There is no asymmetry. The traditional jazz pickup itself is much wider than the gold foil pickup; the width allows for sufficient winding.
    So even in the best case scenario, there's going to be asymmetry and signal loss from the outer strings in this bass. The loss will be worse for the E string than the G string, because of the larger vibration amplitude.

      You would think making the pickup ¼" wider wouldn't have been that big of an ask. It looks cool, but it's still a single coil with single coil problems.

    I tried 3 of these in 3 stores in my market region, and all 3 were fine (with finished fret ends and polished tops, correct bridge placement, and a balanced E string well serviced by the pickup placement). None had any of the QC issues noted by the 1 one 'reputable' influencer, whose 'personal' experiences were then parroted by less invested and less ethical fan boys/commentators who had never bothered to try one themself, who nonetheless piled-on in practice of the worst kind of disinformation.
    No other note worthy influencer has had that negative experience either, and several of them have since testified to that fact. Each of the instruments I put through their paces was well balanced, reasonably set-up, and articulate after the fashion intended by the employ of this unique pickup. So, I bought one! Because its generous 'presence' and singing upper partials are a good fit for the powerful and euphonic all tube amp I use, with its obligated subtractive-circuit tone controls

      It definitely wasn't handled as it should have been, but a significant portion of RUclips thrives on sensationalism. It's all about getting the views, going viral, and keeping the community wired up; ultimately, that's what matters to some creators. - The bass he got his hands on clearly shouldn't have left the factory that way, but every now and then a lemon makes it through the door. We've had them before, and usually give the vendor a chance to make it right, and 99.99% of the time they do.
      On another note, it's great to hear that you've found an awesome bass that brings you joy and keeps you playing! Rock on!

    Why the heck does a Jazz Bass only have one pickup anyway?

    • @christocr
      @christocr Год назад

      Well, I have three "regular" Jazz Basses and run them neck pickup only about 80% of the time. So I would assume there are players out there who never use the bridge pickup but prefer the sound of the single coil J pickup over a P bass split coil and the feel of the J neck over the P neck.
      This particular bass has its own "flavor" of sound. It doesn't sound like a J-bass neck pickup. It doesn't sound like a P-bass split coil. And it doesn't sound like a early P-bass with the single coil. It is its own thing. Either you like the sound or you don't. I think it sounds pretty good and wouldn't mind having one of these basses. Am I going to sell my J-basses and buy one of these? No. But I wouldn't mind adding this bass to my "collection." Just something different.

      Playing a Jazz Bass on the neck pickup is actually a pretty common thing in roots reggae, usually combined with flats.

  • @denelios
    @denelios Год назад +1

    Aside from the apparent sewer level quality control, i don’t see the appeal in a jazz bass with one (very archaic) pickup? The whole point of a jazz is the ability to blend the two single coil pickups for a versatile range of tones as well as hum cancellation. With this bass you just get a tiny fraction of the tonal range and unnecessary hum. Even if it was built to a half decent standard it should cost less than a Player series Jazz - that is half of what it is being sold for. I’d rather buy a Squier jazz over this sad offering, or better still a used Mexi Fender from 2010-2018 back when they were, for a short period at least, making good value acceptable quality instruments.
