When I think of how I drive , the rolling wins is all I need to be a safe driver, along with good brakes and traction control. I am glad they reviewed the "final thoughts" as the original discussion was lacking and short sighted and not fair to Hyundai . I did test drive the N-line alone for about 20 min. Its a lot like my car which I love to drive, I did spin the wheels once. That being said I could easily live with it an seriously upgrade my tech along the way + working AC. I think think a big factor he mentioned in the final thoughts was the thing about time behind the wheel for reviewers. Was also hilarious how he blamed Jack for all the negative opinions 😂
With all off the douchebaggery Hyundai has done and still is doing to their own customers, I'll never again buy anything from them or their sub brands.
That’s essentially the whole point of N at the moment, cheap speed, just like SRT when it started out, and many other performance badge cars, like all the old SS Chevys and GXP Pontiac’s. N is great because while there are better performing vehicles you can buy they are all more expensive, and in regards to the Veloster N, it’s even performs better that one particular plaid seated German competitor of it
@@patrickmartin3322 i should point out that i think the Golf R is the Veloster N competitor. not the GTI. The discontinued Veloster Rspec was the GTI competition
The production value of these guys is unparalleled from anyone in the car review community, with maybe the exception going to Throttle House. These two channels stably put out such high value content!

@@VaunShiz I agree with Mark that they need to have a dedicated N car instead of using the Sonata for it, which was never purposed for this. Kind of a sloppy design narrative. But then again, can’t you say the same thing about the Camry?
First off I love this channel. You guys rock! So I now own this car. Came from a 2018 Dodge Charger 392 Daytona (I know I know) and could not be happier. The interior and build quality are worlds apart. The Charger was much faster but a total handful to drive fast without peeling out all over everybody every single time I wanted to go kinda fast. I had it completely loaded and that is probably my biggest gripe. The fact that I don’t have AC seats, a power passenger seat or memory seats bothers the hell out of me. But what I do have is a very nice looking, well put together quick sedan with a beautiful interior that I got a fantastic deal on. Looking forward to the next few years before I’m on to the next car!
@@mohamednawwar1450 The car handles extremely well but it’s FWD, so you’ll get understeer if you push it in the corners and no LSD, it’ll do the one wheel peel. But as a whole, it’s a pretty solid car. Especially for the $$$
I own a 21 Sonata N line. I like the package for the price paid, $34,500. I can’t afford a BMW like you guys, I think that you car critics are out of touch with a lot of car owners. I’m 68 years , owned a lot of V-8 muscle cars but at this stage of life, this is just what I like now. ( smooth ride and enough power to have a bit of fun.)
I've watched probably a dozen or two reviews of the Sonata N-line and this Jack guy is the only person who's spoken negatively about it. For $35k you get a car that fits four adults with just fine about-town comfort and great tech that puts up 330i-beating numbers from 0-60 and in the quarter mile for at least $5k-$10k less for a comparably equipped car. And it gets great mileage too. I test drove it and yes, the FWD layout does not lend to BMW-like satisfaction in cornering. But if you want to just have some fun on the highway or on a winding road, it is just great - on a whole new level compared to its Toyota and Honda competition and arguably compared to many much more expensive European and Japanese vehicles. You can have fun without peeling out in a tight turn, Jack.
I kept my sel plus for a month and was disappointed...traded in for the N line. I sell them for a living and noticed one of our other stores had the N line . I am so in love with this car just a Beautiful car and launch mode is boss. ❤❤❤
As a recent owner of a 2021 Sonata N-Line, I'll say it's a good car. Not great, but any complaints I have are minor and don't sour the overall driving experience. For the folks who were around in the early/mid 90s, this car is LT1 Camaro/Firebird fast. That's still faster than most cars being sold today. And it gets much better fuel economy, provided you stay out of boost (hard to do). Good. Fast. Comfortable. Sounds like a winning combination to me. Wish it had AWD, but next gen!
I think Jack is missing the point a bit, I'll give my perspective on his criticisms as I recently purchased this. 95% of people aren't going to floor this at every opportunity and roast the tires, and if it's really that much of an issue to you get the $200 summer tire option which will help tremendously. I personally haven't had issues on the all seasons, because I'm not a total hooligan. The ride is stiffer then the normal Sonata, but it's far from uncomfortable. Steering is a bit numb but it's direct and has very balanced handling. I'm personally very happy with my purchase so far.
I will say, the rear tail light, at night, is really neat and high end looking. Had one of these pass me tonight and the rear light adds a real presence to the back of the car. It gives the car a low and wide appearance. yes, we were traveling straight on I75-N; no curves were harmed in the passing maneuver.
I75 N in Michigan? Or some where else. I’ve been looking for these cars in Michigan and I’ve only seen one on the road, I think the one I test drove might have been the 2nd on in Michigan lol
just saying i own a N-Line sonata ,and that *ding* sound you hear right before he says "i just turn traction control on" is the sound of him turning it off , and i know it is because you only hear that sound after holding the traction control button for a couple seconds and it makes that noise and turns both the traction and stability control off lmfao
You're testing it with traction control off. We drove this yesterday and as 2 old boys that have had big block high hp and torque cars this car slays them in most things considering it has to contend with the FWD world of physics. I don't think there is anything amiss with this car given the price. The look is debatable but if one comes up behind you, I guarantee that you will remember that look and after all, we need uniqueness in our designs these days. Muscle cars back in our day were great to look at, sounded good and did well in a straight line. To be honest, my old Honda Accord could wheel spin at a read light. That's just FWD for you. But the old cars couldn't take a twisty road like this car can and in fact most times those old things scared the crap out of me trying to corner. Hyundai and Kia are both on the ascendancy and btw, I read the N stands for the Nurburgring Nordschleiffe where they regularly test and have a shop but hey, maybe it just sounds better.
I've watched all the reviews and narrowed down my search to the N Line and the Accord Sport. I get Jack's frustration, but there is no better family sedan south of the $35k price tag that gives you the performance and fun to drive aspect of the N Line, sorry not even the Accord sport. Despite the lack of Brembo branding, the brakes are actually pretty phenomenal. The car feels lighter than it is and the 2.5t is matched perfectly with the DCT. It is not a track car not should any buyer or journalist expect it to be. Can it be better, sure, but much the same way Honda wants clear distinction and options between the Accord and the TLX, Hyundai wants the same for it's Sonata and G70 offerings. 100% happy with my choice and looking forward to enjoying it after the break in period.
It's a "N-Line," and not the full "N" for God's sake....I think this offering by Hyundai is tremendous. Looking forward to seeing more N/N-line offerings by Hyundai in the coming years.👍
If you're going to stand on the pedal at every light and corner, then yeah lol. Drive it with some finesse and it's pretty fun. I test drove it just to scratch it off my list. I drove it home 2 hours later. Over 4 weeks and 1500 miles now, I'm glad I chose it. The ride is firm without being harsh. Just how I like it. Skip Barber and some SCCA racing under my belt so I have fun with whatever I drive. It's chuckable and trail brakes nicely. Agreed it should have an LSD at least. It requires finesse to have fun. It's got plenty of torque to drive sedately but still pull away briskly. It revs right to redline with ease compared to the previous generation 2.0T that went flat at 5,500 rpms. Yes the looks are polarizing. People either love it or hate it. I've been approached by strangers about this car more in 4 weeks of ownership than I ever was with my three-pointed stars or 4 rings. I didn't like it when it came out. It grew on me a bit, and a little more so with the N Line grille and trim. But then again I've always been one for oddball cars. I had a 2003 Passat W8 - but in my defense it was 1 of 432 6-speed manuals ever imported to the US 😉
I don't agree with what they are saying about the new N Line Sonata. I just got a 1.6 turbo Sonata Limited. It is by far the best sedan I have ever purchased. I have owned BMW, Genesis 3.8 G80, Azeras, this car is by far the best combination of smoothness, power, and luxury! The best. I am sure the N Line is a start and a new combination of all that and more power. I highly recommend the new Sonata or K5 cars to anyone. By the way, my daily driver is a 2018 Elantra Sport. The opposite of the Sonata. That is a fun car too but in a different way with a 6 speed!
I appreciate that you re-recorded this final thoughts. And I 100% agree with you on what EVERYONE does with these types of cars. They add the power a little styling that we all want but EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE in this FWD segment leaves out the most important damn thing. The LSD. As someone who has always loved things like the early 90s Taurus SHO, '02-'03 Sentra Spec V, and my current ride a 10th Gen Civic Si - give me a goddammed mid sizer with decent power and a freaking LSD! Its NOT THAT HARD! I don't need massive amounts of power like an M3 or even a 340 I just want something a little bit special that I won't feel guilty about my kids education money on! You're ALL guilty of it - Accord, Camry, K5, Sonata. The first SOB that FINALLY puts an LSD in this thing (hopefully with a stick but lets face it that ship has probably sailed) will 100% get my money in 2 years!
I've been watching reviews on this car all afternoon - nobody else seems to have such problems with the open differential and wheel hop (I have seen it a little here and there for sure). Although it's an imperfect design to keep costs down a bit, I have to assume that in this review: it's probably a tire issue.
I like these reviews cause these are cars I might actually buy. Or even if I don't, I can compare other affordable cars to this one. Keep up the good work Sir Goose
Why is everyone obsessed with sporty and 3 seconds 0-60 ? Speed limit is 40 in city and you can not launch it at a stop light cuz you will get a ticket if theres a cop around. Sonata doesn’t have to be sporty, there are lots of people who like luxurious, fast, quiet cars and Hyundai is trying to achieve it.
As fast as a mustang ecoboost 0-60 and quarter mile with a lower horsepower/torque engine, full sized back seat/trunk, and front wheel drive open diff is an impressive feat. I think the car deserves some respect as long as it's not a total chore to baby in poor conditions. Dumb compromises have their place if the price is right for the right person.
I love this channel!! Complete honesty. No bs and very funny. All these other channels are like, " this is a fast car that'll make you smile and looks good, oh yeah its half a million dollars but that's a bargain." What?????!!🧐😔😔😒
The criticism seems to assume people who want powerful sedan engines are frequently flooring the accelerator in a sharp turn on wet pavement. Would most of you really be driving this car in a way to create the “smoke show” they referenced? I test drove the Sonata N-line pretty hard, I thought. No smoke show. But I’m also not flooring it in a hard turn.
I'm on my second Hyundai vehicle such great vehicles. First was 2020 Elantra GT N-Line now Elantra 2021 basically a fanboy for Hyundai forever. I test drove the Sonata and if I recall the vehicle felt quick and that was the base model I can just imagine what the power difference feels like. I'm going to get a 2021 Elantra N DCT one day even if I have to import it myself the value of these vehicles is phenomenal ...lol
...he has legitimate concerns. I understand not wanting to step on toes of showroom mates, but if you are going to sell the idea of sporty, you can't just make one or two changes when 5 or more changes are necessary. If price starts to get in the way, adapt that technology into other platforms...or, bring in the true, real deals fast car. Not sure how many folks will go for a $40k+ Sonata, but I guess if ppl buy $40k STi, Golf-Rs, G70s, Avalon TRDs, S3s, etc, then maybe a $40k+ Sonata isn't that far off the mark; but it needs to perform like a $40k+ car...no pho about it
I appreciate the adoption of larger 4 cylinder engines in turbocharged applications. Recently drove a '21 Mazda 3 Turbo and it gives a much smoother power delivery. Some cars absolutely depend on their turbos to even move, like most sub-2.0 liter turbo engines out right now.
I drove this car. I plan to buy it. Why? Unlike you, I do not use full power every time I start. With the traction control on it is a great driver. Also, merging onto the expressway is very easy and passing a truck on a two-lane road is never an issue. Thank you Hyundai for a great car!
I just bought the n line in pearl whit and it's an amazing car its fast and yea sometime the tires spin to much when you start and go but when it's in motion and you go go its awesome. Maby wide tiers or something can help it I dont now I'm not familiar with cars like this . But overall it's a great car I got mine on special for 31k and its worth buying imo
I'm just your average overweight family man who wanted something kinda sporty to bring the kids to soccer practice, but on the way home, have some fun. Had a 18 STI, which I loved, but my wife hated. Bought my N-Line a few weeks ago and keep making excuses to go to the grocery store. Look, torque steer, yes sometimes, fun as hell to drive for me.... Hell Yes!!!! Leave it at that. Oh, and it also doesn't hurt that my car payments don't have to equal my mortgage payments in order to have some fun.
Take It Easy Guys!!! Hyundai and Kia will get there Eventually. You have to creep before you can walk. The Hyundai Sonata N Line and KIA K5 GT are Great Cars Relative to the Competition!!! Hyundai and Kia have come a far way, and the journey has just begun!!!
Jack lost it on this car. There's a Sonata at my work place. It's an incredible looking car. It really is. The N line makes it sportier if one wants that.
I own this car and I love it. Does it have shortcomings? All cars do. But if you have the proper expectations, it's a great car. The ride, the power, the seats are all very good. I also took a trip from Minneapolis to Des Moines and averaged over 35 MPG. A good quality tire will also mitigate some of the traction issues, I put on Conti DWS-06 in the OEM size. I bought this over the Camry TRD and I am glad I did
I have wheelhop in my BMW too (all the time in the rain, intermittent otherwise), so I think it is unfair to criticize a mildly tarted-up version of Sonata for it. Just learn to modulate throttle better on take-off, it is part of the fun.
Lots of high end performance cars come with ultra - sticky summer tires that generate terrific numbers. That’s a good way to generate sales. But they are delicate and don’t last. And the prices are ultra too when it’s time for new ones. That’s why I switched to a good set of high performance all-seasons. They can take punishment, they can operate in a wide temperature range and still give real-world street performance that lets me use the car’s power acceptably well when I’m going places. A year ago in November, I left Cape Canaveral in the morning and it was sunny and 75. The next day I got in the car in northern Mississippi to head north toward home and I had to drive on 2-3” of snow and 25F. Summer tires don’t have the flexibility I need on the real highway, going real places. When I got home I put on the winter tires mounted on steel wheels.
I used to own a 2012 Sonata 2.0T, which I think was rated at 274hp and 275ft-lb, and it had the exact same issues. From a roll that thing was a ROCKET...like able to keep up with 5.0 Mustangs for a little bit, but trying to do anything from a stop was just torque-steer city and one-line burnouts. Unfortunately there's not enough here for me to consider buying a new 2021 model, even with the improvements like dual DI and port injection, wet clutch, etc.
I'm in the market for a midsize family Sedan that is also sporty. I test drove this Sonata N line twice. The first one, the salesperson rode along and I was seriously thinking this was going to be my next car. Well thankfully I went and test drove this car a second time alone and realized I'd be paying for new tires every month. It's a blast to drive and rocket sled is a great description, but the tires constantly squealing is not only annoying but will be costly. It does it when you punch it, but also when you go around any turn remotely fast. At this point I'm either going with the 2.0 Honda Accord or the 2021 Stinger GT. If the stinger had a manual, there wouldn't be any other choices. They could have atleast put this DCT in it.
9:15 I understand Americans live in a bubble, but the N brand is big in rallying in Europe. i20N and to a lesser extent i30N compete very successfully against Toyotas, Fords and Citroens
So what would you buy in this segment over it? -there’s nothing. Would not drive a trd. Would not drive the accord. Would not drive a wrx. Best value for the buck
One of your most entertaining reviews in a while. Jack's passion was excellent to watch, but I was glad to have the balance of your final thoughts. Interesting car for sure!
I love when manufacturers advertise their product has something that every manufacturer also does, in this case "high strength steel" and "aerodynamics" etc. I'm surprised they don't advertise that it has headlights and brakes on all four wheels.
They use a lot of high-strength steel, because a sister company makes gobs of the stuff. It's not a trivial feature at all, as various grades of steel are used in competing cars.
Truth is most people don't know what a diferential is, and wouldn't dare to try and accelerate mid corner. For the average person that wan'ts to feel fast in a straight line, I see it working.
I think most people will open up the throttle when pulling out into traffic. I've got the 2020 Sonata. I can't scoot out in front of traffic. Accelerating into a 90 degree turn, all the Sonata wants to do is roll forward. I open the throttle, turn the steering wheel, and my ECU just goes confused unga bunga. And that's just with my 1.6L Turbo.
@@IRSmurf i drive a 1.6l turbodiesel manual hatchback. You can't have torquesteer without torque! Overtaking is an experience as well, and I have to floor it in daily comutes to reach the speed limits.
Honestly, I think Hyundai and Kia have grown as a brand and developed their products more than any other car brands in the last 10 years. Jusy my opinion.
Solid point with the N branding. They are trying to build a brand out of just factory tuning of existing chassis and drivetrain options. Although they are on the correct path, it's just never going to reach what M and AMG is with that rate. Superb review as always.
Once upon a time nobody thought they'd make respectable mainstream cars, and they were wrong about that. They hired Albert Biermann for a reason, and I'm sure he didn't come cheap. The problem is thinking these N-Line cars are true performance cars when the competitors from the German brands aren't either. We'll have to wait for the full N cars to see what they can really do. I do wish they hadn't put such a powerful engine in this thing. Reserving an LSD for an N model makes sense, but I don't know why they didn't go to AWD. They have that already engineered and there's plenty of demand for such cars.
I’d never own a POS Hyundai/Kia after my mom’s left her stranded, but I’d watch a Savagegeese review of one to support the best auto-review channel on RUclips.
I don’t get why reviewers want these cars to drive like monsters on a track - they’re not designed to. They’re everyday family cars with extra power for having fun on back roads or overtaking people on the highway. This car is excellent at all of that! Could it use a LSD? Sure. But the car can still do 0-60 in 5.0 seconds (with launch control and summer tires) and will beat a Charger R/T, 330i, C300, A4, IS350 F Sport, TLX Type S, Accord 2.0, WRX STI, etc. etc. etc. in the 1/4 mile (based on Car and Driver posted times). I think it’s a hell of a car, especially at $34,000.
Certainly understand Jack’s criticism, and it’s the reason I bought a Mazda 3 Turbo AWD instead. Regardless, it’s still a great deal, and the lack of LSD or AWD is acceptable at a price of $33,000

The production value of these guys is unparalleled from anyone in the car review community, with maybe the exception going to Throttle House. These two channels stably put out such high value content!
The Straight Pipes have great production too, but this channel has B-Roll that’s unmatched in its smoothness and taste.

Looking forward to the next few years before I’m on to the next car!
wow nice man!

@@matthewstevens2556 I tried and none were around at that time.
@@mohamednawwar1450 The car handles extremely well but it’s FWD, so you’ll get understeer if you push it in the corners and no LSD, it’ll do the one wheel peel. But as a whole, it’s a pretty solid car. Especially for the $$$
Hot stamping, pure engorgement, fwd tire shredding, who needs a blue pill when I can just get in my N-LINE!
After waiting several months to get mine, I finally got it, and I love it. The comfort, the extra power, the style. Love being in it, love driving it.
MAN! That cutaway mechanical animation was SUPER COOL!!!
Yes, I thought that was really impressive too. I suppose these are Hyundai's own corporate marketing videos.
"It wasn't fun, you didn't feel anything there!" Jack I bet this isn't the first time you've said this.
Black is the best color for these! Really masks the front end and actually looks quite good

Your right. Just got one n tinted it out. Looks even better.
I’ve seen a few around here in black and it looks so sinister. You’re 100% right.
Yep and dark blue

100% happy with my choice and looking forward to enjoying it after the break in period.
i love mine too, Hampton Grey.. No Regrets Whatsoever
It's a "N-Line," and not the full "N" for God's sake....I think this offering by Hyundai is tremendous. Looking forward to seeing more N/N-line offerings by Hyundai in the coming years.👍
I don't think Jack grasped that idea. He's wanting this to be a full "N" car which it isn't...which is ok for 90% of the target audience for this car.
Had to do a double-take with the title. I swore I read it as "Hyundai Sonata N Line | Pocket Sand".
I feel like the design session was probably like an episode for Tool Time and one of the engineers piped up "Did you say More Power?!"
Great review. The car is fast, that alone will make alot driver's happy for that price.
Yup. For $30k, not a bad deal.
I had a 2003 Passat W8 - but in my defense it was 1 of 432 6-speed manuals ever imported to the US 😉
Omg i love the matte interior! Wish the gloss black was a brushed faux/real aluminum. Would make it perfect
that slow zoom-in got me hahah! great video as always!
Can't wait for the Veloster N DCT review!

Yes!!
Bingo!
The Final Thoughts are great. I love that you don’t mince words regarding your impressions. Great insight as always.

Listening to Jack going off on this was really satisfying.
...he has legitimate concerns.
Mark's grammy's jacket looks surprisingly good on him.

Yes they are closing the gap
It happens all of the time. Swap on normal tires and car becomes even worse.
Same here. Been holding on to my '11 that desperately needs to be traded. This Sonata N is not swaying me.
I think my PC's broken. Baymax was speaking to me.
Accord 2.0T and Camry V6 are the clear winners.

It's Hyundai and Kia after all, their cars are about as special as A4 paper.
The only brands that use the same steel as Hyundai are Kia and Mercedes Benz.
Volvo advertises their use of high strength boron steel. Apparently they use more of it than any other manufacturer.
One thing I like about the N-Line
They gave it more power and better handling unlike many other body trims from the likes of Mercedes and Audi
Did you really just compare Hyundai to Audi and Mercedes?
Truth is most people don't know what a diferential is, and wouldn't dare to try and accelerate mid corner. For the average person that wan'ts to feel fast in a straight line, I see it working.
I think most people will open up the throttle when pulling out into traffic. I've got the 2020 Sonata. I can't scoot out in front of traffic. Accelerating into a 90 degree turn, all the Sonata wants to do is roll forward. I open the throttle, turn the steering wheel, and my ECU just goes confused unga bunga. And that's just with my 1.6L Turbo.

Think what you meant to say was "what AMG used to be". That badge hasn't meant a damn thing for a while now...

The Sonata N-line/K5 GT really seem to divide reviewers. Seems like a good set of tires is a must.
Yeah after seeing that first launch I’d rather have the 1.6T Sonata. But the Mazda 6 Signature is still the best mid size sedan of that price range.
Once they add AWD to the mazda6 with that 2.5t motor it will be a game changer
@Robert Porter just don't floor it from a stop and around turns
@Robert Porter you always floor it in the snow and rain? Maybe you do need lessons. Any car will spin in the snow genius
Certainly understand Jack’s criticism, and it’s the reason I bought a Mazda 3 Turbo AWD instead. Regardless, it’s still a great deal, and the lack of LSD or AWD is acceptable at a price of $33,000
