Pentatonix is always amazing live even with no mics as was the case here. This performance was done backstage for a Make A Wish young man. Make A Wish foundation grants wishes for sick children. The young man's wish was to meet Pentatonix and to have them perform this song for him. Pentatonix has granted a lot of wishes for kids over the years.
Anytime someone says Pentatonix can't possibly do their stuff live and sound like the recordings, I point them to this video haha
They have sung this often on tour, but they weren't even miked for this, it's insane! That was somebody's phone camera and mic in a random room for guests from Make a Wish.
Haha I love how you almost looks pissed at them for actually doing this! Your mind was melting there for a bit! This is a good video to show people when they complain about "oh yeahh... sooo much aaautotuuune" Pssh!
If anyone doubts their talent this erases any doubt. Other balancing the mix and adding reverb there wasn't much done to the official version. There is no where to hide in this one. This was recorded on a phone and they had no mics or anything. This room did not have the best acoustics either.
They are truly special at what they do.
This probably sounded better in the room because that phone isn't picking up Avi's low notes. I don't think you've done any of their originals. There is a live performance at Japan's PopSpring 2016 where they do 3 originals from their 2015 originals album and their "Evolution of Michael Jackson". It has great sound and video and runs around 15 minutes. Search "Pentatonix Popspring". Also from the 2015 album -- "Sing". Or from the 2021 originals album, try "Happy Now" or "Coffee in Bed"
yes this, it is the best recording of them live i've ever seen mostly bcz its MTV doing the recording but its worth it!
The Prayer, Popspring 2016 is a live concert of three originals and their Evolution of Michael Jackson. These are great ones to react to. Actually anything you pick will blow you away. Great reaction!!!💕💕

I would also recommend Popspring 2016 - it's both live, and features original songs, so it's a double-whammy! And since it was recorded by MTV for broadcast in Japan, the video and audio quality are excellent - some of the best I've heard.
I always recommend Say Something - Kirstin's emotional lead may make you reach for your tissues. Mitch's rap in Problem is a complete hoot, and Amazing Grace is truly amazing, and Kevin's surprise at the end makes it doubly worthwhile.

Lol! Pentatonix is known for doing 3 takes. After the first time some one says what if I do this here, They try that. Then someone else, so take 3. Then they take the best one. 😁😁😎
Really miss your PTX reactions. right about Kirstie a bit off at the end but what do we want? check their recently released live Hallelujah with Matt. It's worthwhile
IF you ever get a PTX concert in the area you are, get the VIP meet and greet, you will never doubt their vocals again. Many times you think it is studio magic being done to make some layering or reverb or off-step tone(autotuned) it is just these 5 amazing singers knowing how to back each other up and create those sounds live. They have only ever recorded once an enhanced song, that was the 90s Melody, but that was to honor Cher's Believe original. It has been a rule of the group that they do not release anything they cannot do live without electronic adjustments. Each have created solo works, and are superstar level when they do, and when you get 5 superstar singers together that are determined to make the best sounding song no matter who needs to be the one singing, it is PTX!!!
There goal with every song they do is for it to sound as good live as recorded
If you want to see a breathtaking live performance, there's a video somewhere of their original song, Love Again that's performed in some backstage hallway and none of them even have a microphone except for Kevin. It's recorded on someone's phone, but still somehow sounds like studio quality. Any time someone doubts their ability to perform their songs live, that's always the one I suggest to really drive the point home. 🤣

Here is a fact you probably didn't know. The recording you heard in the official video was not done in a studio. The day they were supposed to record it the studio backed out at the last minute. The went to Avi's house and recorded the song in a bedroom closet. The video was done using an iPad in his kitchen. They won their first grammy for that video.
As fabulous as the offiical video is, in both in performance and visuals, they and their arranger Ben Bram won the Grammy for Best Arrangement. The category used to be called Best Arrangement Instrumental, but was expanded from then on to Best Arrangement Instrumental or A Capella. Same category they won in for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The only Grammy they have won for singing -- so far -- is for Jolene with Dolly Parton , Best Country Duo/Group Performance. 🙂

Kirstie said that she forgot some of the lyrics in this performance and i know she was a little off there maybe it was near where she forgot the words and just was trying to catch up lool

They do. This was a private performance which is basically only for a few people in a back room before a concert. This is just one of those people pulling up their phone to record.

There are also fan recordings in concert with this song. That does balance the levels for Kevin and Avi and add a little reverb but that is all.
A simple PTX group rule: they record no songs they can't perform live.
and no microphones.....;)
