All of the characters here are pitiful. Tan Xuanlin and Mu Wanqing for losing their family. Marshal Xu and Marshal Pei with that kind of father they have. Marshal Su for losing his first love. And so on. To the writer of this drama, I should applaud you for successfully making me cry for every episode. My heart goes for all the characters. They deserve so much more.

Love between WanQing and Xualin blazes again!!They risk each other's lives to protect their love. Su Hongchen joins revolution army because he lost his love of his life. Guangyao is pitiful because of his dad made him accused by the people how the Xu family made their lives miserable and losing their loved ones. Guangyao opens his eyes and decides to join his BFF Hongchen out of guilt and persuation. Finally Pei Xiaojun opens his heart and mind for Sangyu and tells her how he feels about her.
The producer did an excellent job showing the grief Hongchen went through after losing Yueshuang, the intensity of Tan and Wangqing reuniting with explanations, how children are blamed for the sins of their fathers and how in order for one to gain a new or good life, he may have to lose something. So many life changing decisions made in this episode by Su, Pei, Tan, Guangyao, Wu Xianying and Wanqing! So well written and well-acted by all the actors!

I really like Zhang Jingyi’s (Mu Wanqing) drama characters. They are smart, strong-willed, and powerful women. I watched Lighter and Princess before this one and her character there is a wise, loyal, and independent girl until adulthood. I really like how her chosen dramas empowers women and highlights our attributes and not the usual damsel in distress and immature behavior where I noticed Cdramas’ like to convey girls as “not smart” (which I have seen in most cdrama’s I have watched) which is really annoying. I am really looking forward for her other upcoming dramas. ❤❤

Basically, if she didn't decide to follow him their story was over, if he left and she stayed in Shanghai their love could be considered concluded. He hadn't thought of having to leave her at all, because by choosing to return to her hometown, he hadn't thought that maybe they would never see her again and no one knew how long and if he should have waited for him? In his choice to leave, did he think she was leaving her there and the only thing he cared about was her safety? In reality it is she who decides to keep the story going by following him, otherwise it was over. This way of doing him, at times it is irritating, practically the story in the last episodes is driving her forward.
