My favorite way to ride is to ride up the dirt road at the 214 trailhead and ride down the catamount. The logging on the road has opened up sections with amazing views, and the climbing is very mellow. If you’re craving a longer ride, there are sections of catamount that you can loop, or loop the whole thing. This trail is probably my favorite place to ride within a decent drive from south of Portland
I rode Catamount as an out-and-back from the 214 trailhead when it first opened. It felt uphill both ways. Unfortunately the DH trails in that area (at adjacent Shellburg Falls) were utterly destroyed by the Beachie Creek fire in 2020. Somehow Silver Falls only got a mild scorching. The vast majority of the work out there is done by SATA and the CV Salamanders. You guys still have a standing invitation to join me at Blackrock. The two main lines (Banzai and Sicter) are back to fully open.
For what its worth, the upper catamount trail is open (unless the blowdown changed that) but you have to access it from the 214 trail head or ride up the upper catamount trail from where you were. I hadn't been on the outer limits of the trail since blowdown over the winter. It really is miserable looking. I Love the videos as always!
Davey Sprockett posted this update on the mtbr Oregon forum 5 days ago: "Catamount backside logging project just finished up about 10 days ago. Loggers have departed but a portion of the trail was damaged by their work so isn’t officially open yet. That and trees remain across the remainder of the backside section that wasn’t logged but suffered snow & storm related damage in December. Salem Area Trail Alliance members have inspected and plans are underway to open it asap. I expect it’ll only be a couple weeks, tho this isn’t an official estimate."
Do you think riding down Roemers would be fun? I'm always looking for new trails to ride, but it's a bit of a hike from Eugene as well. Thanks for the review!

If I was on the South side of Portland this area would definitely be on my frequent ride list.

Good to know! Maybe next time I’ll ride the whole thing.
