As a Muslim I'd say Britain is a lovely country for Muslims that is admired by most Muslim world. Honest, good, kind hearted people mostly. Most important you can expect justice which is most important for any society. The Muslim world can learn these good values from England because this is actually possible if you grow a spine as a people and hold government accountable, this is one quality I admire about British, there is accountability. Breadth vs Depth? How do you account for the later rejection of Catholisation & its replacement by a heresy? The varieties of Christianity are so diverse, that Islam, an #Abrahamic_Faith is religiously not excessively divergent. The region of England had earlier de-Christianised at least once before. It can arguably said that modern England has high level state-backed Christianity & centuries of historical imperial evangelisation, along with a melding of the Christian identity with nationalism e.g. St George. Yet, if one looks at the shallow level of nominal Christians, though huge in numbers, Islam is rapidly the most vibrant & energetic, with little resistance. The Divine Right of Kings was predicated on the idea of a Christian God so could not transfer to Islam and was not even enough to justify King John raising taxes. As for evidence that England was Christianized by the 1200s you can look at how pivotal a role the Church had in every day life, the number of churches and the failure of any competing beliefs for the next 200 years. I would recommend Going to Church in Medieval England for both breath and depth on this subject. As for the success of the reformation there are many factors. The English's state was more centralized by the 1500s and the Papacy was weaker. Despite this it was arguably the most violent social upheaval in English history coming close to disaster multiple times. All of this was becuse of a deviation from Christian doctrine not even to convert the religion. The idea that an unpopular King could convent to Islam in the mists of the crusades, contradicting the belief system of his nobles, his people and all his European allies is a bit far fetched to me. That's the less simple view.

I first heard about this from an old Ladybird book about King John. According to that, the Caliph rejected the offer, on the grounds that a king who would abandon his religion in order to win a war against his own subjects would not be a reliable ally.
The thing is that a Muslim will never reject someone who is willing to convert. Their intention on why they convert is between that person and God. Not up to the Muslim to decided. So if King John wanted to, the Caliph wouldn't have rejected him he would instantly welcome it. Remember empires that fell to the Caliphs of the past accepted Islam and abandoned their previous faith. Some Kings/Leaders did it for whatever their reasons were. Not one time has any of them been rejected. Even men who fought in wars against The Prophet Muhammad, some would later accept Islam and none of them were rejected. We are not in a place to reject anyone from seeking the truth. So I wouldn't take that passage from Old Ladybird book as factual information because if one knows about Islam they would instantly see that this can't be true.

It's important to remember that when a king is excommunicated, no Mass is being held in the country, basically the whole realm is excommunicated. You can see why he would make that offer. Not so sure how long it would have lasted, probably not even beyond his reign.

Richard may not have conquered Jerusalem, but he did save the Kingdom of Jerusalem. And it seems VERY unlikely that John would have converted. "Not receptive" is a huge understatement; there would have been immediate revolt and probably a Crusade aimed his way if he tried it. John wasn't very popular as a Christian; as a Muslim convert? His life wouldn't have been worth spit.

To be fair, at the time England had only been Christian for a few centuries - before that it was pagan. Islam is arguably closer to Christianity than Christianity is to Paganism. One of the methods used to convert people to Christianity was to line up Christian celebrations with existing Pagan ones. There were also some people who just accepted the Christian god as another one of their gods, although this wouldn't be relevant in converting between two monotheistic religions. I'm not saying that the King would have been able to successfully convert the country to Islam (especially as he wasn't very popular anyway), but it's not as ridiculous as it first sounds.

@@aaronhansen2955 'its basically the exact same religion' is also true between catholicism and the various protestant religions, didn't stop wars being waged because of slight differences in interpretation, but that's mostly because catholicism was never about the religion, it was about having a centralised authority in Europe that superseded national law to create a psedo-empire (similar to the HRE) with the pope at it's head, threatening excommunication for anyone (or any country) that dared to defy him. The threat of being sentenced to hell despite any good deeds you might have done was enough to keep peasents in line, or get them to revolt against their leaders. While Christianity had been dominant in England for only a few centuries, that's still plenty enough time to indoctrinate a population.

I did not know that! However, I do think we tend to underestimate how culturally and poitically close we used to be to Iberia and north Africa. British folk music has much in common with north African folk music - they even have bag pipes - and "Morris dancing" is actually "Moorish dancing". Our origins and affiliations were rewritten at a much later date when it had become politically expedient to invent a close continuity between England and northern Europe instead of the South. Such is history, just stories.

Iberia like Britain used to be Celtic so that is more than likely the reason for our similarities in culture, rather than any conspiracy about rewritten origins. The Anglo-Saxons were Northern European, so when they invaded and settled they brought with them Northern European customs. Along with the Normans these 3 groups are the founding stock of Britain and are why we have shared cultures with many of the countries that also share ancestry from these groups.

The next group were the Anatolians (which may be the Mediterranean group you're referring to) that mixed with the WHG. These two are referred to as the Neolithic Britons. Perhaps they did have a connection North Africa but that would have likely been lost as North Africans today are a different people to the North Africans of the ancient past. They have been colonised by the Greeks, Romans and Arabs as well as immigration from neighbouring African countries. From my understanding North Africans used to be more of a Mediterranean people but are now majority mixture of Arabic and African DNA. Combining that with Islam means that it makes a lot of sense that we see them as more foreign. The Moors and Berbers were hated in Britain and Northern Europe due to their slave raids so I have a hard time believing British people had a close relationship with them.

Curious for sure, but no, England would not have converted. King John was unpopular and his reign tenuous as it was, there is no way the rest of England would have gone along with it. Pretty much every historical case of rulers changing their religion and bringing their country with them, the new religion has already had a significant following (such as with Catholic rulers converting to Protestantism), or the society has been so religiously tolerant and pluralistic that a gradual soft change has been possible (such as with European Pagan rulers converting to Christianity). Neither which was the case with the England of King John. Nor would the Almohads been of much help, not only did that particular Caliph die soon after, his whole Iberian empire collapsed to a coalition of Christian kings, reducing Islamic Spain down to just Granada in the span of a few decades.

As a Muslim I'd say Britain is a lovely country for Muslims that is admired by most Muslim world. Honest, good, kind hearted people mostly. Most important you can expect justice which is most important for any society. The idea that an unpopular King could convent to Islam in the mists of the crusades, contradicting the belief system of his nobles, his people and all his European allies is a bit far fetched to me.

I first heard about this from an old Ladybird book about King John. According to that, the Caliph rejected the offer, on the grounds that a king who would abandon his religion in order to win a war against his own subjects would not be a reliable ally.

To be fair, at the time England had only been Christian for a few centuries - before that it was pagan. Islam is arguably closer to Christianity than Christianity is to Paganism.
One of the methods used to convert people to Christianity was to line up Christian celebrations with existing Pagan ones. There were also some people who just accepted the Christian god as another one of their gods, although this wouldn't be relevant in converting between two monotheistic religions.
I'm not saying that the King would have been able to successfully convert the country to Islam (especially as he wasn't very popular anyway), but it's not as ridiculous as it first sounds.

The next group were the Anatolians (which may be the Mediterranean group you're referring to) that mixed with the WHG. These two are referred to as the Neolithic Britons. Perhaps they did have a connection North Africa but that would have likely been lost as North Africans today are a different people to the North Africans of the ancient past. They have been colonised by the Greeks, Romans and Arabs as well as immigration from neighbouring African countries. From my understanding North Africans used to be more of a Mediterranean people but are now majority mixture of Arabic and African DNA. Combining that with Islam means that it makes a lot of sense that we see them as more foreign. The Moors and Berbers were hated in Britain and Northern Europe due to their slave raids so I have a hard time believing British people had a close relationship with them.

Curious for sure, but no, England would not have converted. King John was unpopular and his reign tenuous as it was, there is no way the rest of England would have gone along with it. Pretty much every historical case of rulers changing their religion and bringing their country with them, the new religion has already had a significant following (such as with Catholic rulers converting to Protestantism), or the society has been so religiously tolerant and pluralistic that a gradual soft change has been possible (such as with European Pagan rulers converting to Christianity). Neither which was the case with the England of King John. Nor would the Almohads been of much help, not only did that particular Caliph die soon after, his whole Iberian empire collapsed to a coalition of Christian kings, reducing Islamic Spain down to just Granada in the span of a few decades.
I don't think John actually offered to convert. I think he just offered to swear allegiance to the caliph and recognize him as the higher king in exchange for military aid.
