Thank you for covering Susan’s story. I’ve been following her story all these years and even looked into it for a cpl years. I’m a Minnesotan and this needs to be solved
I wonder if anyone besides the gas station attendant saw the unidentified male subject of interest? I also wonder if the attendant was ever looked at as a potential suspect? Easiest solution is often the right one, and I just find it interesting that the scenario about which I speculate wasn't even mentioned as something that was considered.
The gas station attendant was a woman. She has been questioned multiple times over the years. She did once change her description of the mystery man’s hair, from Sandy to black and curly.
Very strange case. One thing l don't get-whether she knew him or not, why did'nt she grab her purse and glasses out of her car before leaving? I don't believe anyone would not do that-particularly during a storm, when you don't know when you can get back to your car.Was she actually SEEN getting willingly in the guys car? Are the gas station people telling the truth? Just speculating here. RIP Sue.The night should've ended with you warm and cosy, watching TV with your sister.
I always wondered the same thing, were the gas station attendants the ones who are claiming they saw her get into a car willingly with a “guy”. Could they be lying obviously
Lion-x8m : That’s a great point about leaving her personal items...... It makes me furious and sick to think that poor girl was about 1 mile from home...horrible.
@kelleybunny Good point. I live in a nice, small and friendly town too, hopefully you do also. But whenever some poor person is victimized, a resident or journalist will always say, " we could never imagine a crime like that happening here, in our town..." It's sad and sobering, isn't it?
@@67marlins yes it is. no, i don't live in a small town..but, i have in the past. anything can happen anywhere. i hope the are able to find something..too help her family. i can't imagine worse than this.
I wouldn't describe the smell of marijuana as sweet. There's a reason it's sometimes called skunk. Sweet smelling smoke is mostly associated with cigars, incense, or hardwood smoke (think barbecue).
Total snow that season (1988) was 60” compared to 110” in winter 1973 I live currently in St Paul Minnesota during these times. But didn’t remember this case. Thank you.
In the the middle of a snowstorm she overheats, an attendant said she came inside asked him “what to do” then she chats up some random guy in the parking lot and jumps into his car? Sure that’s believable. Does anyone know for a fact that the gas attendant actually worked through the storm? He seems a most likely subject to me.
@@VioletJoy I think I read somewhere tgat tge gas station attendant was actually a woman. Either way I'm sure you're right - that person would have been interviewed vigorously.
Did she really go with that man with the very vague description? Did anyone besides the gas station attendant see this? I have a feeling that this guy never even existed, and the gas station attendant made it up.
Leaving your car behind is very strange… Even if you did meet an old friend and wanted to go somewhere with them, why wouldn’t you just follow them in your car? I can’t wrap my head around her leaving the car behind, especially in a snowstorm. The most strange part is the fact that she was talking to people at work about how she couldn’t wait to get home to avoid the snowstorm, but then turns around and leaves her car to go somewhere else with this man. Doesn’t make any sense…
the conclusion based on the story as told is simple. She was kidnapped and murdered. body hidden and not found. perpetrator died, is in prison on another charge (unlikely), or moved away and escaped. apparently the police have inadequate evidence. the radiator cap is a red herring. a carelessly tightened cap can be blown off if there's insufficient water after over heating. sorry for the poor girl, she seemed a nice person.
At 4PM she phoned home, anxious to leave work to get home to watch TV. At 9PM she stopped at the petrol station. What had been going on during those 5 hours?
I'm trying to figure out why she declined the antifreeze. Maybe she didn't have money? Maybe even if she had money, she didn't know how to put antifreeze in the car? Why didn't she ask the gas station attendant to borrow the phone to call her mother? Rest in peace 🕊️
Considering the time this took place, and the fact that there was a bad storm, it is safe to say that she likely did not have access to a phone. I live in Minnesota and most people I know did not have ready access to phones n stuff during this time.
Maybe she was worried about her mom driving in the storm? Or maybe she was going to call her, but got stopped by the stranger before she had the chance?
My theory? Both Sue and the man she left with died. Possibly the vehicle they were in crashed into a lake or a ravine in the foul weather and were never discovered (there have been similar cases that ended this way after decades).
Such a promising future lay ahead for this beautiful young lady. Hoping that in the future Susan's family gets some kind of answer to her disappearance.
Thanks DC for covering her case. Why would the radiator plug be loosened, the police should have contacted her family and asked about the car but they didn't do that in those days. She must have known him well enough to get in his car that late. So even though tampering was obvious they still automatically assumed she was a runaway. The police waited 10 years after her disappearance to release the composite sketch? Did these cops ever attend an academy? Doubtful. Whomever conducted the investigation were very shoddy with the evidence. Washington County SO, you didn't do a thorough investigation at the date of occurrence so you likely won't find her, condolences to her family.
Fascinating. Am happy the cold case detectives are looking to solve this mystery. So Susan’s red suit trouser left under her bed was tested; what about testing the red jacket/blazer that went with it? I wonder if Susan was pregnant and would have been rejected by her mom since they were Lutheran. Devout parents can be unforgiving. Just a thought. I am sorry to sister Christine and the mother. 💔
The pants suit being placed under the bed is curious. She wore it to work the day she vanished, yet changed into the skirt and blouse later in the day... then the pant suit is found under her bed a few days later. If Susan placed it there this would suggest she returned home, possibly with someone who smoked, only to leave again. Why? A curious case indeed.
I believe Sue changed clothes at work because she didn't want to be out in a snow storm in a skirt. Someone tampered with her coolant cap or perhaps it wasn't put on right the last time coolant was added and worked loose. It seems like she knew the man in the gas station parking lot but I believe he forced her into his car with a concealed weapon because if she got in his car willingly she would not have left her keys, purse, etc. behind. I think he killed her and because he was known to her he somehow knew where the spare key was at her house. Perhaps he watched the house until both Mother and daughter were gone or he knew their schedules. He let himself in, stuffed Sue's pants under the bed, ate some food and smoked in the house as if to say 'I was here'. Very creepy and sad. I feel sorry for Sue's Mother and sister. All the years of worry and regret. Her letter to her sister was heartbreaking. I hope this case gets solved soon.
Sadly the kidnapper was probably shrewd enough to realize that her form of dress indicated that she valued being cute over insulating herself from the elements. Thus she was probably overly friendly, too trusting, and underprotective of herself in other ways as well.
the police did not follow up ..that someone had been at the home.. < what? someone was missing report made and no one went to the home!/ oh dear! this poor family.
She got off work at 4pm, yet she arrived at the gas station around 9pm?? It sounds like she wasn’t in too much of a hurry to get home and watch tv. 🤷♂️ She obviously stopped somewhere.
It's believed she called home shortly after arriving for her work shift. Presumably she started around 4pm and finished around 9pm, and wanted to let her family know her plans in advance.

She wouldn't be 56, she'd be closer to 65
🤔
She would be 55 to 56 in 2024. In 1988 I was 8 and she was 19. So 11 years older. I'm currently 44 in 2024, add 11 to 44 that would be 55 to 56.
