The Moon Jar is a sculptural form that became an icon in contemporary ceramic history and is celebrated in both the UK and Korea. Echoing the shape of a floating full moon, the traditional white Moon Jar, made from two porcelain hemispheres, dates back to the Joseon Dynasty (14th- 19th centuries). Historically the Moon Jar has been prized for the artistry required to achieve a seamless, continuous curved surface and for its ability to express Confucian ideas of purity, simplicity and austerity. However, in Moon Jar: ‘The Untold Story’ we will explore how contemporary Korean makers are radically reinventing this traditional form.
