To protect their heads in the case of an accident. Just like on a motorcycle, a helmet saves lives and prevents serious injury in the unfortunate case of an aircraft accident. MAF #pilots fly in some of the most dangerous and difficult places on the planet and we want to make sure they have the best chance of survival if something unfortunate, like an engine failure, should happen. As a side note, not all of our pilots wear helmets, only the pilots on programs where the flying involves high levels of risk such, as the mountainous terrain in #Papua and #Kalimantan #Indonesia .
MAF used to require flight helmets, but with the more modern aircraft incorporating inertial reel shoulder harnesses (like your car seatbelt), we are now allowed to pick between helmet and headset. The past requirement for helmets was due to the shoulder straps being manually adjusted, so pilots tended to loosen them in cruise to allow greater range of motion for managing cockpit instrumentation. If an emergency or heavy enough turbulence happened happened, they'd stay in their seat, but get knocked unconscious against the glare shield.
it will contain his preferred intercom headset - it's not uncommon for jet jockeys or ag pilots to use their helmets in "simple" aircraft too. Plus if you saw the state of the strips these guys fly into you'd consider a helmet too :)
Fantastic. I really blessed saw God did great thing to all the people even in the remote areas. Praying your endeavors bring lot of fruits for His Kingdom.
I love this specific video because there's lots of videos glamorizing or editing the day in the life of a Missionary Pilot, but this video just shows the real parts. casual pre flight, talking about the runways, radio communications, weather. nice to not have a lot of editing or things thrown in. I like to see exactly what I can expect in my future, God willing I'll become a Missionary Pilot one day :)
Darrell Grisham; Aren’t they adults that can decide for themselves if they want to follow a religion? Nobody is forcing religion on these people. You appear to be a preacher of hate and suspicion.
I hear a linguistic speech pattern where you guys say YEAH a lot to either start a thought, finish a thought to an “ unasked question” ... my missionary brother who served with AEF in Zambia has the same “ habit” ... Yeah. how come I don’t have that characteristic ...!!!???😱🙄😳🤭🥴
They are cables and have a bungee system so that will not damage the flight controls. Do you think that engineers are that stupid? All you would have to do is find a diagram of the flight control system and find out for yourself.
Psalm40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Susi air is quit new in West Papua and mostly bussiness oriented. AMA for Catholic and MAF for Protestant mission are the pioneers that help people so much for decades.
Can you imagine Allied military pilots flying missions here 75 years ago in virgin flying country with virtually no landing strips enroute... departure and arrival... many got lost and were never seen or heard of again...!!!
I remember a MAF plane flying a planeload of new testaments into an Aboriginal community in Arnhem Land, N.T., Australia, who were out of food. Would they unload the bibles to onload food? Not a chance!
Awesome message to send to your passengers: Our job is so dangerous we wear crash helmets, but we won't give you one to wear. All the way through this video I kept asking the characters flying their Cessna 206's, "Great Job! Did you destroy the Death Star? Did you fight Darth Vader with your lightsaber?" It's a bit too much. Remember, 75 years ago, American, British, and Australian pilots fought Japanese pilots over these same islands in their fighter and bomber planes. None of them had anything more than a leather helmet for head gear. Food for thought.
I was born and raised in the Nabire Papua but I had never flown with a plane ma 'f but I was sure if the Lord would allow me To go and transfer the knowledge I have to my saudra-brothers in remote areas then I'll be able to feel it...Amen 😇🙏
I was follow these MAF 1993 when we has lived in Bengen Village, and subdistric Tabang. Thanks to MAF Pilot. GBU. Thanks.

In that case, are there any higher chances of passengers surviving than those of the pilot?
To protect their eyes in case of bird strike also.

Very important work that all these pilots do. Greetings from La Paz BCS Mexico.
Doing a good job in the community, and those helmets are very sensible,a forced landing in that terrain can be very inhospitable.
THANKYOU FOR ALL YOUR TIME, COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION IN SERVING OUR RURAL AREAS FOR THE SERVICE OF OUR LORD JESUS
Great video on the missionaries in New Guinea. I never knew this even existed!
So nice to see the 206 working wamena. They have gone now. Kodiaks and some 208’s now. Paul looked so young.

I love his helmet
Normally he is a test pilot for high speed jets ! LOL
Why use a helmet in a Cessna?
it will contain his preferred intercom headset - it's not uncommon for jet jockeys or ag pilots to use their helmets in "simple" aircraft too. Plus if you saw the state of the strips these guys fly into you'd consider a helmet too :)
Makes sense. Thank You.

Flying a 206 with a helmet?
I have a friend who crashed 2 weeks ago in the jungles of Guyana. He survived but would have benefited from a helmet.

I think it would be awesome but y is the pilot wearing a helmet and the passengers are not????????????
Bus drivers wear seat belts, passengers do not. ?
Douglas Reeves 🤣🤣🤣
Their security depend on his security 🤓
That helmet tho :D
proud of guys
If I got on light plane and the pilot was wearing a stack had I would want to know what was wrong with the plane.
Moving the rudder like that while the nose wheel is in the ground, will destroy the wires connected to the foot pedals. Don't do that
Jay Skinner there are no wires, they're cables, and moving the rudder won't hurt them at all.
They are cables and have a bungee system so that will not damage the flight controls. Do you think that engineers are that stupid? All you would have to do is find a diagram of the flight control system and find out for yourself.

Seeing missionary work always makes me sad. It decimates local cultures.
