For those posting how cute a Prairie Dog is and you want one here are some facts and I should know as I have rescued two Prairie Dogs over the years. In 1990 I called Hershey's Zoo America and a gentleman named Dale told me this. Prairie Dogs are extremely social animals and can actually die from loneliness. I built "Elvis" a home as follows. The bottom was a 55 gallon hex shaped aquarium filled with cedar shavings so that Elvis could burrow underground. On top of the aquarium was a three foot tall custom cage I built... WITH A PADLOCK on the door. I knew when Elvis wanted to play because he would hang on the cage and I would take him out to romp around the apartment. Oh yeah and you will not believe how fast a Prairie Dog will burrow into a couch. Prairie Dogs are vegetarian so do NOT feed them commercial dog or cat food. Prairie Dogs are adorable but they are also very social animals so before you buy one make sure you can give it the attention it needs. Oh and don't be alarmed if when you sneeze or cough your Prairie Dog lets loose with a high pitch bark.
Hi - I'm from Illinois too! I'm glad you loved Bucky. My husband and I got our first prairie dog from a pet shop (we are down here in Florida). Bucky came from a rescue group here. Their main diet should be Timothy hay, and it's good to supplement with some oats, nuts, and fresh vegetables and fruits. They absolutely LOVE people food, and as you can see, Bucky was too fat. It's hard to tell them no! Keep in mind they are not domestic and can really bite. They are very social also.
@@thesupertaco1934 Aw. I'm sorry, we don't have Prairie dogs any more. It's been so long. As they aged and went over the Rainbow Bridge, we didn't get any more because although we love them, they can be quite destructive!! Now just dogs and cats. But thank you for your comment!!
Thank you so much for posting this! Bucky is such a cutie pie, and he is so fortunate to have you as his mom! You can tell when critters have happy lives, and Bucky is definitely happy! Thanks also for answering everybodys questions on here. I've been searching the web for all the info on PD's I can find and you seem to have a great outlook on these little guys without being preachy or thinking you know it all and not wanting to share it! You seem like a wonderful, super sweet person! Thanks!
I had three over the years and l loved each one. Because they're so social I tried to keep two and ended up with third. Got them from a pet shop here in Florida. The last one was a baby who was rescued. I had both an indoor cage and an outdoor cage. They were a joy to watch and mine loved scratches too. One day while I was at work someone let them out of their cage. I found two deceased in the yard and buried them. I like to think the third one escaped to live his best life. I never got bit. But, I realized they were not domesticated and I respected that. They were such sweet little guys. My favorite was they would chirp, call to each other and do what I called woo woo where they threw their head back and made a woo woo sound. Such cute faces and snuggles on their terms. Miss my three musketeers.
word of advice from one loving prairie dog owner to another, when he turns his butt to you, that a middle finger telling you to stop it. I learned that lesson from my mother who learned it the hard way. Other than that, that fuzzy loves you, cherish him always and he will cherish you
WOW!!! I've NEVER seen that before! I had no idea that PD's could be so playful!! I almost fell off my chair laughing when he shoved his face into his bed to hide! WONDERFUL video! I learned something NEW today!! =D
That's so FREAKING CUUUUTE!!! Unfortunatelly the some heartless human and their greed love to make money on the cost of precious lifes of God's creatures. FORTUNATELY there is still good and compassionate souls in this planet that appreciate how sweet is to have animals around to make us so happy!
Yes, they do. Prairie dogs love to dig, and they have very powerful, short little arms and legs and claws for digging. They really do belong in the wild, but so many are now endangered by poisoning and hunters. If you put a towel in their cage, they will "dig" it around and pack it down with their noses and just have fun rearranging it. They are really fascinating to watch and precious to hold.
I had one in Kansas, they sold them in the pet stores there. Her name was Junkyard, they are so fun and sweet. Junkyard would play with our cats and ferrets. that was so hilarious! corn on the cob was her favorite food.
Wow, it's really wonderful to hear even a hunter say that. Thank you. It is so wrong to kill for fun. These animals are an important part of the ecosystem. Kind of goes to show how ignorance rules.
Yes, he has a cage. Prairie dogs in captivity need a "burrow" to live in and to feel safe in. But giving them "floor time" is important too. They have active minds and need stimulation.
These little guys are for sale in many petshops now - but are illegal in some states. Check the laws of the state you live in. They're very sweet little critters, but yes, the can deliver quite a bite if they're scared or angry. It doesn't normall happen, but it could. They're not for everyone. They also don't care much for strangers in the house (animals OR people). :) Thank you for posting.
Thank you. We got Bucky from a rescue group here in Florida. I am alsways sad to see them in pet shops, but that is probably something that will never stop as long as there is money to be made by trapping babies and stealing them from their parents. People buy them in pet shops on an impulse, then find that they have special needs that people aren't willing to provide. So they end up needing to be rescued.
I just moved to CO from IL and have fallen IN LOVE with all the prairie dogs in our area. My husband asked me if I wanted one as a pet one day and I honestly did not think this was possible until seeing this video. My heart just melts. I too think it is cruel and wrong that people are killing the colonies. Such amazing cute animals.
Prairie dogs do live in groups and they are very social creatures. It is never good to have just one, although they can bond very strongly to a person.

Rats are wonderful little creatures too. No matter what you do, always hold tight to your love of animals. As you get older, you will see that your love is desperately needed, because the majority of people don't care about animals. They need those of us who love them to be their voice.
Awww, too bad. I'm from Illinois too! We live in Florida now though, and they are legal here. Very precious little creatures, but they can be tempramental too!
LOL! Yes, they can be very stand-offish until they get used to you. Be careful, because they can really deliver a painful bite. Just be patient and give lots of love, and be gentle with him. They are wild animals and require a lot of that. But it will be worth it! Be sure to have him neutered when he is old enough. Find a vet who is used to dealing with prairie dogs. Good Luck!
LOL! Yes, it's much the same, only worse. Their teeth are like little chainsaws on furniture and woodwork - doors, cabinets, etc.! But they're just so sweet and fun!
I love prairie dogs.. I never saw them until I recently moved to Colorado, and they're one of the cutest animals I've ever seen!
And we have plenty of them here.
Greetings from a Colorado native for 18 years.
