This is exactly how your suppose to interact with your prairie dog, be one with the prairie dog so that both owner and pet will built a great bond...I mean it looks weird how the guy demonstrate but that's how it should be done, be like an animal. By looking at this video the bond with these 2 sure is great and the prairie dog knows it's owner is being playful
About the 'creepy' comment... this was just a pet owner connecting with his pet. Nothing different than all the cat and dog lovers going gaga over them. I kiss my dogs all the time. Prairie dogs are not domesticated animals and for them to connect with a human is a beautiful thing. Anything here perceived as creepy is in your own head and you probably need help with that, not the o.p.

My PD nuzzles my face as his way of greeting every time I pick him up. He is saying "hello family member" to you! I also believe in self defense but killing animals for sport is WRONG. To me killing a PD or colony is no different from killing humans - but we do that too! People can learn a lot about how to live in community from Prairie Dogs.

I remember some time ago i was watching a documentary about bears in USA and they life style and in some point a scene of a bear catching a prairie dog alive and tearing it apart by his head shows up. It was the worst thing i've ever saw in a documentary about animals, damn i knew it was just the nature doing its job but that scene never came out of my mind, that image of a prey doing everything it can to get away from the assassin and still being catched and ripped apart scares me till this day
I'm a big 2nd amendment supporter, but I just don't grasp the notion of shooting or killing one of these. I hear people justify it by claiming there are too many of them, but the truth is that they have lost literally 95% of their population. Not to mention the loss of the vast majority of their original range. People used to say there were too many bison, too many whales, too many giant turtles, etc. Look where that false belief system always leads........

I recall bison were overhunted by folks that weren't exactly paying attention to the concept of extinction, and that whales were hunted for the many body items people found semi-luxurious use for, but never "there's too many of them, gotta kill 'em all." I can see people considering them troublesome enough to want to shoot at them (potentially farmers under the notion that they'll damage their crops), especially considering they're technically rodents and some similar but larger and significantly different cousins of theirs would be raccoons and opossum, which one generally doesn't want roaming around them unchecked, but anything more than that would likely be coming from someone that isn't exactly aware of the situation and has learned bias against small furry creatures from forefathers. But, anyway...
I don't think anyone says there are too many prairie dogs... in fact where I live (the Southwest) the black-footed ferret is going extinct because these are their only prey, and farmers keep murdering all of them.
Just like woodchucks, they can damage the foundation of a building or if they are on cattle grounds, their tunnels can cave in when a cow steps down on them, or the cow just steps in the opening of the hole and break their leg. Broken leg=dead cow
I would do the exact same thing with my P. Dog when I had one in Florida, I’m now in California and we’re not allowed to keep them here unless you have a special license.
