So many people poor and out of jobs now. How can we support a bigger population? The Debt ceiling is accelerating, Social Security running out. A higher population solves some problems but create others. And it will only increase the wealth gap.
Funny how these billionaires are all for people having more children, while making sure the economy and wages are terrible for working people. How can people have children if they can't afford to.
True life story: I come from a long, long line of highly developed intellectuals, my grandmother on my mother's side was a pioneer as a woman in astronomy, my mother was an astronomer, too, I was born literally at Yerkes Observatory, for example. My mom had seven children and all of us were very intelligent, I took my first Masters Class when age only 16 years old. We all went INSANE. I was too smart! I did many very dangerous things when still a teenager (running around Europe for example, trying to overthrow governments in 1968 until deported). Several times, assassins tried to kill me, the State arrested me, I had to deal with all sorts of strange things and then in 1969, I nearly died of the Hong Kong flu, lost a lot of my brains and became much more normal. This saved my life! I made a good living, rebuilding and selling Victorian homes and now live in a house I build and designed, myself. Retiring in old age, safe and sound! Whoopee!
Selecting for intelligence isn't wise. Those most successful people are often not the most intelligent but the most disciplined. Often highly intelligent people are underachievers outside of academia.
Having more children is great, the best way to do so is to build healthy communities around the child. As the cliche goes, it takes a village to raise a child. The "nuclear family" model of parenting is stupid. WSJ, and the West, don't have to look very far to see how larger families can live together to help raise these children in healthy environments. But just pumping out more kids for the sake of more kids is a recipe of disaster. To use another cliche, "The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth".
that couple gives some very bad vibes. Like if you gave me a suspect lineup and asked me to point out the eugenicists, I'd find it hard to point out literally anyone else
The ideal or wanted fertility rate is 2.7 births per women. And there's a large gap between what we want and what we get. This can be attributed to economic factors like housing costs that is the leading reason of why people don't have babies.
Ideal earth couldnt sustain itself if everyone lived even somewhat well this static depopulation is deal for sustaining life on this planet the only proplem is that they dont want the WEST to depopulate since thats where these billionares money is
2:40 "homogenization of culture is dampener of fertility"; only 1 minute later at 3:40 "people should use technology to select baby traits". Could someone please enlighten me how is allowing engineering baby traits not going to cause more homogenization, and hence lower fertility??
I applaud the coverage and making people aware of the issue. The issue itself is garbage….. we are already beyond the population level of sustainable progress. Big business is just trying to promote a growing class of customers for their goods. We still live on a finite planet with finite resources. Life expectancy continues to increase worldwide, medicine continues to improve extending productive years. It is time to slow down.
The thing is is that as the population gets older arguably the most important resource , young working aged people with their manual labour and brain power gets more scarce. And I don't want to live in a society where there is no restaurants , health care, research into green technologies and well nothing , unless your rich.
@@ryanb5684 I think we agree. Unemployment is at historic lows. We should not continue a path of ever increasing population gains for the purpose of supplying an exploitable segment of society. All boats should rise not just the yachts. Tech is a big part of that.
To be clear, the correct solution is to increase the amount of national capital, and income per unit of national capital, not the number of people. If you want a better economy and a rich nation, you should focus on improving the lives of the people. This doesn't mean increasing workloads. It means increasing efficiency of output, and automating production and maintenance tasks. It also means improving resilience to economic shocks. The perfect economy would simply hand you everything you need, and enable you, support you, in pursuing your dreams. Reality gets in the way of that perfect economy with: resource limits, limits on human ingenuity and communication, corruption and inefficient political systems, and historical decisions on capital investment and socio-economic status.
The reason why fertility rates are down everywhere is because it has become too expensive to raise kids for even a minimum decent life. The reason for that is education is costly and not publicly financed. But one other reason is also that the salaries for common jobs aren't growing at the pace of inflation, and at the same time workers are being overworked than normal hours. I suspect the lack of good labour laws(which provide a level playing field between employer and employees) is responsible for this. The wealth is getting transferred from the middle class to the rich company/business owners. Labour is getting exploited. When common life gets so difficult/competitive and full of struggle, it's no wonder people don't want to raise kids.
These measures seem extreme. Stop making people so busy, making them feel they have to grind to just survive, and they can use that time to.. _get busy_
Greetings from germany. For rich people (wealthy) people in my country, having many kids a sign of their great resources and the protection for their legacy. That's how it was, is and always will be.
This psuedo-intellectual tripe from the psycho couple is easy to unravel if you live in the real world: People aren't avoiding parenthood because of "teh hOmoGeNizAtiOn" of anything. It's bc people are actually being thoughtful about the true and various costs of having children, from conception to well beyond University.
But who, exactly, would be the primary targets of discrimination in such a scenario? If everyone had the option to undergo genetic testing, and it remained a matter of personal choice, where would the lines of discrimination even form? Wouldn't the freedom to choose dissolve the notion of a major population segment being singled out?
Do you think these technologies will be evenly districted to all regardless of income, country of origin or ethnicity? If you can't access a technology, you are effectively discriminated against by lack of access
Watch the film Gattaca. Not everyone will be able to pay for genetic selection. Those children born naturally will be at great disadvantage. It will be chaos.

So many people poor and out of jobs now. How can we support a bigger population? The Debt ceiling is accelerating, Social Security running out. A higher population solves some problems but create others. And it will only increase the wealth gap.
This 2 people looks so fake paid off to promot the fake propaganda
Scary people and no sense sentences. Family is not a statistics, but love.
And yet Elon Musk is not exactly known for supporting a family-friendly corporate work culture.
Dude can't even be friendly to his own family
More babies = more customers and money for the ultra rich. More babies = more work, more competition and more struggle for the rest of us.
Funny how these billionaires are all for people having more children, while making sure the economy and wages are terrible for working people.
How can people have children if they can't afford to.
To keep capitalism alive, why else? More consumers are needed to keep the ball rolling while ravaging the world.
Of course they want people to have more kids. Otherwise who would their kids exploit in the future
I'm learning more in the comments section than in the video itselft.
Well done, non-rich lucid people.
Anything for the $$$ !!
Reminder to all right wingers: Elon Musk is an immigrant from South Africa.
Good Lord someone tell Sam Altman he would make an awful parent please
Rich people call it "pronatalism"
Everyone else calls it "having more babies"
Are they starting a cult?
Whoopee!
The ending with that mom strapped with babies hanging off of her surrounded by giant guns on walls is just surreal.. That's so unsafe.
Selecting for intelligence isn't wise. Those most successful people are often not the most intelligent but the most disciplined. Often highly intelligent people are underachievers outside of academia.
Why are all the men doing the talking? At 1:51 the woman is just staring at guy who is barking but it's the woman who has to bear the pain😅
The woman does talk though, a lot
Babies and humans are not resources to exploit in the quest to save the world 1:41
Raising kids on current wages. Nope.
Blessed are our plutocratic overlords and their inordinate spawn. 🙏
Better living and working conditions generally makes people more likely to want to have kids.
Eugenics lol. They should say what they mean. They'll never win this though, it's too late.
My Mother taught me Young “have as many as YOU can afford”….. I have one ☝🏾 child who is now 20 and she doesn’t want kids either
The economist is reasonable, the others are crazy.
Musk should put $100 billion where his mouth is, he's afraid the underclass will go away.
that couple gives some very bad vibes.
They are billionaires, they don’t understand those kind of things
Ideal
earth couldnt sustain itself if everyone lived even somewhat well
this static depopulation is deal for sustaining life on this planet
the only proplem is that they dont want the WEST to depopulate since thats where these billionares money is
2.1 is the replacement rate
Having kids good, engineering kids bad
2:40 "homogenization of culture is dampener of fertility"; only 1 minute later at 3:40 "people should use technology to select baby traits". Could someone please enlighten me how is allowing engineering baby traits not going to cause more homogenization, and hence lower fertility??
Because he's a a tool and because he can. He has lots of kids and then be a terrible father.
Is being rich a mental illness? I'm actually starting to get concerned about some of these folks...
The concept of an embryo having an IQ is theoretical and would be based on genetic potential rather than actual cognitive performance
I'm. Still. Waiting. For. The. Part. About. Elon. Musk. And. The. Video. Ended. 5. Mins. Ago.
I feel like I’m being gaslighted. Maybe if the 0.01% isn’t hoarding all the wealth then people can afford to have kids.
Easy to have kids when you don't have to worry about your economic development
Because John Maynard Keynes taught that a capitalist society can only survive by unsustainable growth.
The couple in the video look like "The Kettlemans"
It's simple they want cheap labor, that's the reason
Watch the movie "idiocracy".
and also Gattaca on the topic of eugenics
We're living in the preface.
If a normal childbirth costs 50k as is, imagine what these new tech will cost
Watch the film Gattaca. Not everyone will be able to pay for genetic selection. Those children born naturally will be at great disadvantage. It will be chaos.
You're a monster if you think the world needs more people.
That is the dorkiest-looking couple I've ever seen.
