Great video! Your lettuce bed looks great! Arugula is such an easy crop to grow. I love how the flowers look after it goes to seed. I saved a ton of seeds from my arugula plants last year. This makes your $1.20 investment we'll worth it!
Shannon, A great way to make that line in the dirt is with a yardstick. My rows are three feet long so I can reach everything from both sides. Just wiggle the yardstick back and fourth down to the depth you want. I also get great control on those fine seeds by creasing the packet in the middle and gently tapping the seeds out as I go down the row. Give it a try. Cheers!
Thank you so much. This was a big help to me! I've never really grown anything but I saw some lettuce in a stores garden section the other day and just had to do my own : )
Thanks for your video. Recently for my garden I quickly installed a Boogie Blue Plus (? I think that's the name of it)... directly to my garden hose. It filters out clorine and fluoride from the water.. so microbes in soil have a better chance surviving. Soil is important... but recently I found that the water we use is important too.
Good video any thank you for the help. I live in Canada so I have to wait until mid may to plant my seeds, but this will be my first garden and I can't wait!
Butter and Matina lettuces are mild and a little sweet. Using trace mineral soil amendments will sweeten a lot of vegetables. If you like sweet tomatoes, cucumbers and greens you must try this. Rock dust like Azomite and sea minerals like SEA-90 will sweeten your crop and create a dynamic living soil that will supercharge your yields. I also recommend using an organic (compost) tea or a worm (castings) tea. Keep on growing!
Arugula. Nice choice! We enjoyed mixing it in with our salads. Did you find that picking it often keeps it from going to seed? Mine were hard to keep up with. We were eating salads almost daily!
This is helpful, thanks! For some reason my lettuce is staying small. Seems to have adequate sunlight and water, just not growing. Not dying either. Any ideas why?
I enjoyed the video! Thanks for the guidance! I have a quick question concerning your raised bed. What did you use for the joint pieces? I'm trying to find an easy way to build my own raised beds.
You can find "L" brackets at any hardware store or big box home improvement stores like Lowes and make a butt joint and screw it together. You can also just make a butt joint by screwing your planks together with deck screws. Cheap and easy.
Hi I just saw your video,Im just wondering about once the lettuce start growing you didnt seem to thin them out?I always thought they always needed thinning out but yours look great.
You lettuce look healthy, I am Montagnard indigenous live in North Carolina I planted lettuce in pot last year they grow and then they die, I don’t know why ?
Actually, a little tip guys, it depends on what type of lettuce your growing. For hers, you just sprinkle it, for mine (iceberg lettuce) you put the seeds 18 in. apart. I would suggest just reading the back of your packet for what to do for the spacing. Like if your watching in 2015!
One thing about growing any vegi is climate conditions. All vegis are easy to grow but if the climate conditions are not ideal they will fail to produce like you desire. I live in Memphis and we have a very long summer which is ideal for growing cantaloupes and watermelons and other hot weather crops. We can get certain vegis like broad leaf and curly leaf mustards to grow through out the seasons and they can withstand the heat and bugs but you have to shade them on the hottest days when it gets up in the 90's but they can grow without bolting. Collards and Kale will grow but you have to treat them the same and they get attacked by the moths and other bugs so a light pestecides will have to be used but they will grow without bolting.
Thanks Jordan Do I have to space the lettuces as they grow or can they all stay togeather? If they have to be spaced as seedling, how far apart should they be?
Barbara Rickman I wouldn't worry to much about loose leave variety as they only grow a few leaves per seed, just SPRINKLE lightly in a row and you should be fine.
Opps... hit the wrong button.... you could microgreen grow the rest of that pack. Also, in high heat you could shade it or it will bolt. Some times I hose down a paper towel and drape it over the heads. Also, just a reminder that fertilizer can be shocking to the plant so go lightly.
I notice you are burying the seed about an inch. I've read to bury it a 1/4 an inch because the seeds need light to germinate? Does that work burying it that deep?
Once you start growing your own veg you'll never go back to supermarket rubbish. Ive just grown my own cucumbers and tomatoes for the first time and they are so juicy and delicious they are worlds apart from supermarket crap!
Hi. growing your own lettuce can actually be as long lasting. if they are grown in enough sunlight (or hardened off), they will release more cuticle and wilt less
+angelo karl canaleta Lettuce is a cool weather crop. If you live in a very hot area, you may want to plant it somewhere that has partial shade during the day, or near a taller plant that will give it some shade. You probably don't want it to get full sun (6 hours) in a row in a tropical climate.
Thank you so much leifcatt for your wonderful advice! I am new to growing..so I will take your advice and hopefully will grow some delicious crops. I hope you don't mind me sending you a personal message in the future if I have any issues? Thanks again and Namaste! =)
I am currently growing lettuce for the first time and I notice that the bottom and some of the upper leaves are white and beginning to yellow. What is wrong? I live in CT
Barbara Rickman Try not to water the leaves of the lettuce as they can get burnt and go white on hot days, I would recommend watering in early morning or evening when the sun is not so strong.

+Neville Walker early spring, you can grow lettuce several times a year depending on variety its about a month to two months from start to finish if done in its preferred conditions. Lettuce can handle colder temperatures say around 40-50 degrees F for nights would not cause me stress until i saw consecutive 39,38 etc.
HELP my lettuce got about 5 inches and then they all started withering away. Now they are all dead I didn't over water or too much sun temp was right it was indoors in container. What went wrong??
Light can only penetrate the top part of soil. You need to lightly cover the seeds making sure not to bury them too deep or compact the soil. Otherwise light will not penetrate the soil and germination will not take place.
WorldOfRandomStuff I am always having trouble with rabbits and deer, but cannot afford to build a fence around the garden, I use liquid fence, but only on the plants that the animals are eating.
Thank you! The most simple video on how to plant I've watched yet!
Sprinkling! I agree that lettuce is a very easy and totally rewarding vegetable to grow!!
Great vid gal!
Was trying to find a tutorial on sowing directly in my garden. This is great. Thank you!

Woo hoo, for the "Mines of Moria!"

When lettuce gets bitter, it becomes more useful as a pain reliever.
What is that on the arm? Oh, my god. Can't believe that's a human being.
Did you thin out any of the lettuce later?
New to all this gardening. Great video. Does lettuce need shade, full sun, etc...
Full sun
Same with my lettuce it just died in the container, as a little plant it is very delicate
Like for the doors of Durin and the lettuce!

No mention about fertilizer?
can you just take leaves from it or do you take the entire plant out to harvest?
I think you just take the leaves as you want
@@Lexlou9523 thanks...She must be busy in the garden.
can you plant in early spring when yhere is chance of frost still?
I notice you are burying the seed about an inch. I've read to bury it a 1/4 an inch because the seeds need light to germinate? Does that work burying it that deep?
How funny - I think I heard you booty-inquire Siri when you sprinkled...I looked for my phone! Thanks for the info
Thanks
It grew so fast.
Um, so when the seeds germinate they will remain there till harvest?
I have to try lettuce
Thank you :)
Hi matey, why is your lettuce yellow? i have 3 yellow ones and 3 green ones, i thought yellowing was too much water?
I'm from Minnesota...you should see our soil.
Bob Silver you mean native indians soil.
AgentJucey You are right, its the Indians.
Does it grow on a hot & humid place like the Philippines? TIA
I have subscribed to you because of your connotations.... that is all
Can someone please recommend mild and sweet tasting lettuces to grow? I really dislike the bitter varieties..so any advice is appreciated..thanks! =)
good job

Do lettuce need a certain temperature or it can be planted even you live in tropical countries

Its best to plant lettuce in may but if your in July like me try planting it next to a window so it can get the house temp
