- Los Angeles Dodgers 9 at New York Yankees 2, F -- Game 6 brought the series back to Yankee Stadium, where the Yankees, down three games to two in the series, were desperate for a win. With the game tied in the fourth, Yankees Manager Bob Lemon made the controversial call to pinch hit Bobby Murcer for pitcher Tommy John. Murcer would not help the Yankees during his at-bat, and the bullpen would cause the Yankees to crumble as the Dodgers scored eight more runs in the game. The Dodgers won their first World Series title since 1965.
The Dodgers 1981 Championship run is one of the gutsiets, clutch and most inspirational playoff runs in sports history!

The Dodgers' World Series title of 1988 was magical, but I cherish the '81 championship just a shade more - simply because it came at the expense of the Yankees. They spoiled my first two World Series (1977-78) as a youngster.
+misterpibb42 I feel the same way you do regarding the 1960 world series. I have been collecting Topps baseball cards dating back to 1970 ever since 2012. I must admit the Dodgers, Reds and Pirates had the most dominant rosters during the 70s. As for the AL, if it wasn't for the DH rule implemented in 1973 I would favor them just as I do the NL. Nonetheless, all the forthcoming world series I always hope the NL wins them. They only won a total of 19 since the DH rule was established.
I generally root for the NL in the World Series - unless it involves the Giants or Braves. Didn't realize the NL had won just 19 since the implementation of the DH. Thanks for that interesting scrap of information.

The only reason I think the DH was implemented was because the commissioner of baseball at the time (Bowie Kuhn) wanted there to be a difference between the NL and the AL. More and more criticism has surrounded it over time whether it should be done away with or the NL should adopt it. Personally, I would altogether stop watching baseball if the NL adopted it.
You would not stop watching baseball if the NL did the DH rule as well. I personally don't like it either, I think real baseball is pitcher hitting as well, that's how it was.

I was in college when this game was played. A classmate predicted that the Yankees will come back and win Games 6 and 7. So the day after the Dodgers won the championship, this classmate came in and I gave him a bad time. "Didn't you predict a sweep? How many runners did the Yankees stranded? What happened to that Yankees' bullpen?" Predictably, he told me to shut up. :)

Back in the 80's it almost seems like a L.A. team won a championship every year. The Lakers in 80, 82, 85, 87 & 88. The Dodgers in 81 & 88. The Raiders in 84.

I had to relive this series, this & 88 were a couple of my favorites. I hope my boy Pedro Gurerro is doing ok.
I remember watching this as a kid. I had seen us beat the Dodgers in 1977 and '78....and I thought we would be able to come back and win this series. I knew the Dodgers were a great team, but I felt we would have the goods in the clutch. LA was just too good. This game was awful for me lol....I was heartbroken. But now I can honestly say that the Dodgers deserved it. I will watch this now for the first time since that night. Thanks for uploading it. On a side note....this was a great announce team for fans back then, even if two of the three were not baseball guys. We were blessed with some great announce teams then. Tony Kubek. Joe Garigiola. Al Michaels. Bob Costas. These three guys. Announcing was not nearly as scrutinized back then, so they got away with being average if they wanted. But we all liked them anyway and they usually delivered.
Give credit for Steve Howe closing the game with 3 1/3 scoreless innings as a reliver💯⚾️
It's so sad that Steve Howe never wanted to get clean. Not even all the money in the world could sober him up and he went to the best rehab centers. He died a horrible death in 2006 when his truck rolled over on the freeway. After they did the autopsy on him they found crystal-meth in his system. He was 48 and not sober. He never wanted to get clean and sober.

i saw this game and followed this team as a kid. As 79LARAMS said, only Sutton hated Garvey (they actually fought at Shea), the other teammates either liked him or tolerated him. Cosell's dissing of the Yanks before during and after this game is still classic and hilarious. The Dodgers of this era (77-81) deserve more respect than they ever received because of the strike year.

Man this brings back so much joy. I was a HUGE Dodger fan at 10yrs old in 81 and this victory made my entire childhood.
I was 12. I missed this series because we had moved overseas, but my mom would listen to the games at 3 am radio and filled me in when I woke up.

Um, Mike Marshall only played for the Dodgers briefly for 2 seasons while Garvey was there. Garvey signed with San Diego after the 1982 season. Marshall played in 14 games with only 3 at first base (did not start any) in 1981, and 49 games with 13 (started 3) at first base in 1982. Marshall's first full season in the majors was 1983 and He was predominantly an outfielder for most of his career.
And I never remember Garvey as being injured or coming out of a game early.
in 1982, they sure did. As a teen I went to see a series in Philly with LA and Garvey would start at 1B...then once he got an at bat, he would be replaced by Marshall (the hitter...not the Relief Pitcher from the 70's) who was either on the bench or came in from RF. I can't remember how long that went on...but I know it was happening. He even went a few games only serving as a PH...streak stayed alive.
I loved the Dodgers of the late 70's early 80's. I can remember them on Monday Night Baseball a lot. Along with the Reds and Yankees back then Nice to see these old vintage battles once again!
i love the Los Angeles Dodgers of any era. since their inception on the West coast beginning in 1958, they have the 2nd most wins in all of baseball , and the most in the National League. that, to go along with 12 pennants and 6 World Series titles, really makes them the cream of the crop in the NL and baseball royalty.
I been a Dodgers fan since 1979. I remember Ken Landreaux catching the final out in center. That was a great series.

Tony Gutierrez - I was in the US Army at Fort Lewis, outside of Ron Cey's hometown of Tacoma. His father still owned a gas station in Tacoma, and it was all decked out in Dodger blue.

what actually made 1977 & 78 so painful was the fact that on paper the Dodgers were the best team in baseball. if it wasn't for Reggie's heroics in 77 & in 78 Lasorda overthinking things, Dodgers should have beat the Yanks both those years.

I remember watching this game when I was 17, I remember it well watching it at my old two story house in Virginia, The entire series was good, New York went up 2-0 and LA won four straight after that.

I remember watching in disbelief as martinez hit that game winning double and griffey sliding into home plate. It's okay, I only had to wait a year for the yanks to return and beat the Braves in 6.

I was a newborn in September and my Dodgers fan Dad (God rest his soul) was probably watching this game. Cool I found this to relive, go back in time, pretend being old enough in the room to enjoy it with him (even though I was probably asleep or awake/crying/nursing). 😄
Yankees fan. So many what ifs as a fan. What if Thurman never died. What if Reggie and Nettles were healthy. No sour grapes, just saying. The Dodgers had some great teams. Certainly a deserving champion.

A Great series victory for the Dodgers to finally beat the hated Yankees. But my favorite memory from that time was Rick Monday's clutch home run in game 5 of the NLCS against Montreal to send the Dodgers to the series.
During the 5 seasons spanning 1977-1981, Burt Hooton's W-L was 67-42 with 2.76 ERA.
He was my favorite pitcher growing up. When he was on, he was great! But if he was off? Forget it!

I was three when it happened. Yankees lost in game 6 of the World Series, and the LA Dodgers are the 1981 World Champions. The Yankees had not won another World Series World Series until 1996.

The Very Last Game that The Greatest Infield in Baseball(Garvey, Lopes, Russell and Cey) would ever play together as Davey Lopes would play for the Oakland A’s in 1982.
Jim Palmer was obviously still playing at this time but already showed the skills and knowledge on his way to becoming a great broadcaster.
As a Dodger fan in New York this was a huge win after 77 and 78 loses to the Bronx Bombers.
My mom's been a fan since 1947.
Steve Sax, I think the only person in MLB history to win a world series ring (1981) before he wins rookie of the year. (1982).
When the Dodgers were in the WS in '81 and '88, Vin called this World Series for CBS Radio in 1981. Vin also was the pxp voice for NBC Sports in 1988 who called the famous Kirk Gibson home run on television.
And he called the 1955, 1959, 1963 and 1965 World Series for NBC.

I was 10 and I remember this being my 1st WS, my father had a bet with some guy and in those days we had only 1 tv in the house, we were all forced to watch the world series and it made me a baseball and yankee fan.

I have this on videotape , from the fall of 81 , I even have the commercials and a now is the time abc is the place promo for greatest American hero and 2 hour premiere of the fall guy. my dad had bought me a vcr , I taped it 4 him , as a way of saying thank u , but did not realize that taping a ballgame is really no big deal if u already have seen it and know the outcome.....

dodgers did exactly what the yanks did to them in 1978, lose the first two then storm back with 4 straight. even though the dodgers seemed to be a sickening west coast version of the yankees, I was glad to see them win in '81 and '88 too when they beat the bloated A's.

- Definitely the most memorable HR of the Dodgers' '81 postseason run since it came at the expense of the Montreal Expos. Dodgers had to come from behind in all 3 postseason series they played in '81; rallied from down 0-2 to beat the Astros, rallied from down 2-1 to beat Montreal, & again rallied from down 0-2 to beat the Yankees 4 straight & win the World Series.

@Eric The game was broadcast on NBC channel 4. I had just gotten my first VCR just a few days earlier on my 21st birthday. I taped the game in the blurry 6 hour mode, and still have it today. But, I need to transfer it to DVD before the video tape decays.

First win since 1965. For the majority of dodgers fans it was the first time they watched the win on tv rather than listening to it on the radio. Also first win in colour for most as a lot of people would have black and white tv sets then

Tommy John proved that, you don't have to be a flame thrower in order to be Successful. During the Games, it looks as if he's just throwing batting practice to the opposing hitters. He's was one helluva Sinker Ball Pitcher, indeed.

Wasn't he on the mound for a Monday Night Baseball telecast when Don Mattingly set a first base put-out (21) record? I believe he also caused the Reds to hit into seven double plays in a nine inning game while with the Dodgers.
Funny thing is, he was a flame thrower before the surgery.

Like the British empire at end of WW II, this game was the sunset of the Yankees empire. Little did I know I would be 30 years old before they won again in ‘96.
As a kid I followed the White Sox and cubs. When I saw the Yankees and Dodgers play my teams, I was in awe of them. I went to a Cubs game where they did beat the Dodgers with Fernando pitching in 1981. Not all of was lost lol.

I was a marine on guard duty during this game. I was in North Carolina at the time and a huge dodgers fan. I got off duty and made my way to the guard shack and the sergeant on duty was cursing. I asked what was wrong and he said damn dodgers. I said they are losing? He cursed and said they were winning 8-2...I left happy...
I just remembered a play that Fernando did in I think was in the 70’s maybe early 80’s when he coughs the ball on the mound and it was coming so fast it picked him up and he landed on his back almost all the way off the mound. Awesome play, if anyone has access to that it’s for sure worth posting.

Michael Littlewood Jim Gilliam played a solid Third Base from the late 50's until 1966 when he retired. You know, I saw Sandy Koufax pitch at Dodger Stadium in 1965 and I must say, I was mesmerized! I was 7 years old and Koufax was my Baseball idol. What charisma !!! What a competitor! He will always be the greatest Dodger to me!!! The years 1962~1966 are, to me, the greatest L.A. Dodger years! The Los Angeles Dodgers were the elite in Major League Baseball during that wonderful era!!! I was so fortunate to be around at that time!

@@oldiesgeek454 I got on line at the stadium about 10am.....at around 8 pm I finally got my tickets.....I was in the Right Field Upper Deck,....but should've gotten better seats. There just wasn't enough police monitoring the line around over half of the stadium. Many cut in all day, probably scalpers.....Life before the Internet, and buying online.

@@johnsain I was 21 at the time and a big Dodgers fan since I was around 7 or 8. After watching them lose to Reggie in 74, 77, and 78 it was nice to finally win one. I had just gotten my first VCR too, and was able to tape it which was a nice added bonus.

Yes they were extremely partisan. Howard "Howahd" Cosell (may he rot in hell) treated all Dodgers as dirt. He mocked them during games ON MIC and broadcast live throughout the country. Then he'd love up all over the Yankees and show all kinds of concern for Reggie Jackson limping. Of course, when he saw Ron Cey with a similar leg strain, he laughed at him and said he walked like a duck.
I was 18 years old in 1981 and this WS win by the Dodgers was what I needed after all the disappointments in the 1970s. Hopefully it made Cosell go home and drink and get yelled at by the wife.

It's nice that except the centerfielder This same Dodger team got redemption after losing to the Yanks in 77 & 78. The people in charge showed a lot of faith keeping mostly the same team together for several years.

***** That's one of the reasons why I think Steinbrenner shouldn't be in the baseball Hall of Fame. Between '81 and '95 the Yankees weren't in the playoffs. And Steinbrenner's constant meddling and interference was one of the main reasons why. There was no stability. Of course a lot of the Yankee players that played for him absolutely loved him and think he should be in the HOF. Why? Because he paid them so well! In fact, he overpaid a lot of the time. The way to the hearts of most professional athletes is through their wallets. Some things never change.

OrrvilleOSUfan Yes, the Dodgers had the advantage in pitching in '81. Especially with Valenzuela being the absolute sensation that he was that year. The Yankees also made some bad decisions in the '81 series. Like taking Tommy John out in the fourth inning of the sixth game with the score tied 1-1. Then the bullpen collapsed and that was it. Dave Winfield was a great player who was in his prime in '81 but he had a bad World Series.
OrrvilleOSUfan I'm a Mets fan and I never liked the Dodgers. Especially after they beat the Mets in the '88 NLCS. That one really stung. The Mets got a little bit of revenge for that almost twenty years later when they knocked the Dodgers out of the playoffs in 2006. But that playoff loss against the Dodgers in '88 was a tough and bitter pill for me and a lot of other Mets fans to swallow. Now that I think about it all these years later, it still hurts a little bit. The other day during the Mets game against the Dodgers they showed Orel Hershiser in the broadcast booth. Seeing him brought back some bad memories from that '88 season.
