    Thank you for posting. I’ve watched this game and this Series every autumn since 1988, either on my original Beta tape recording, my DVD purchased since, or on RUclips. Joe garagiola and Vin made such a great team, their baseball acumen was superb; this was the last Series directed by the great Harry Coyle of NBC, and it was greatly directed. There’s such a smooth flow to every game, there’s something to see or hear even in the non-scoring innings. NBC’s theme music was great, too. And to think we used to get such great televised baseball as this without a subscription, free of pitching changes and stolen bases “sponsored by”, and without overlaid graphics throughout the game.

      The other thing that is SO poetic about this game is another unsung hero. Gibson’s replacement in the Dodgers lineup was Mickey Hatcher, who had hit ONE home run all year, and he hit a two run bomb in the first inning. Without his replacement picking him up and coming through like that, Gibson would never even have gotten this chance for this legendary moment-score would have been 4-1 A’s instead of 4-3 and there wouldn’t have even been any point in bringing Gibby to the plate here. That’s teamwork if I’ve ever seen it!

Where most any other announcer (Joe Buck) would babble on about the historic home run, the A's heartbreaks, etc., Scully shuts up for a full minute and lets the crowd and picture tell the story. I think, the best part that makes him a good announcer is when it's the big moment, and that's when he lets the moment speak for itself. Gibson's HR is the single biggest momentum swing of an at-bat in the history of the MLB postseason! What separates it from the rest is not only the level of competition the Dodgers were facing, but the fact that they won leading to their "down the season stretch" unhittable ace pitching Game 2! Those A's were ridiculously good and their seemingly invincible aura was challenged during that game and then sapped by Gibson's swing of the bat! It was the entire series in my opinion! I was in my junior year of HS and vividly remember the exact spot where I was sitting watching it to this day

But he let me bring in a radio, so I listened to it... at the end, after the HR, the crowd was so loud that the radio announcer, Don Drysdale, couldn't be heard, so I didn't know what exactly had happened for several minutes. The sad thing about Gibson’s homer is it obscures the true hero of that series, lights-out LA pitcher Orel Hershiser. Any psychological edge Gibson’s dramatic blast gave the Dodgers was countered when Mark McGwire hit a walk-off to win game 3 in Oakland. But the A’s could not dent Hershiser.

    • @ShmuelWeintraub
      @ShmuelWeintraub 6 лет назад

      It was a great moment, but I completely agree with you, it was Hershisher's performance (and underperformance on the part of the A's) that lead to the Dodger series win.
      What people seem to ignore is that this happened at the end of game 1, not game 5 or game 7 etc. It's a wonderful moment in baseball history (which I was fortunate enough to witness), but it didn't decide the series.

      The entire Dodgers pitching staff shut down the Athletics. That was the real reason they won. The Dodgers actually match up well with the power hitting Athletics with their pitching that year.

    I was 9 years old and was in Vegas with my parents and brother when this game was played. My Dad asked if I wanted to bet on the game. I said give me the A's for 10$ to win the game. I saw jose hit the grand slam in the first and then went down to the arcade to kill Operation Wolf and Rampage. Didn't know I lost till the next day. I still have my betting slip.

    Couple of interesting historical moments during this game:
    1) Vin Scully predicts Kirk Gibson will not play tonight "for sure." 2:12:04 According to Gibson, back in the trainer's room watching the TV, this comment by Scully spurred his decision to make himself available to pinch hit.
    2) The beginning of the steroid era, Canseco denies using. 2:17:39

      The baseball gods erased Canseco's grand slam with an even more dramatic World Series walk off. No one will remember Jose's first career slam. No one will forget Kirk Gibson, bottom of the 9th , in 1988.

In the post interview he praises and thanks his teammates for giving him the moment instead of letting his head swell and taking all the credit. thinking back on this when we was watching it live on TV.....we were jumping up and down and i actually hugged my mother in law at the time...Thanks Gibson! lol

    This is actually the SECOND iconic homer Gibson hit in a World Series. The first was in Game 5 in 1984 for Detroit. Both times he humbled a cocky superstar closer who went against the manager's orders and pitched to him. (Goose in '84, and Eckersley in '88.)

      Miracle on Ice > Gibson's HR. And it's not even close. Buckner's error, Fisk's HR, the rally off of Rivera in 2001, the rally by the Cardinals in 2011, Mazeroski's HR to win the Series in 1960, Joe Carter's HR to win the Series in 1993...c'mon. Gibson's home run was epic, but I wouldn't even automatically make it the #1 play in World Series history, let alone American sports history.

    • @LexTan

      ***** I think another one of the reasons why this is such a beloved moment is that the Dodgers eventually won the Championship. No doubt, it would be a great heart and soul story regardless if the Dodgers won. But because they won, it had the champion dimension added it to it.
