@@nathanbrady8529 While that's _classicaly_ correct, it's not true in all media. For example, several of the vampires in the Legacy of Kain games _definitely_ have souls. In their case, it seems to depend on _how_ the specific vampire is created, though the devs are pretty unclear on the different methods other than the fact that there are several methods in the first place.

I mean, vampires have always been seductive, even in the Bram stoker novel Dracula and his wives where known to seduce their victims before killing them or turning them into vampires.

Vampires are mostly seen as seductive only in pop culture and more recent (1800s and after) times. Otherwise, it's not vampires that are seductive but the succubus/incubus. The incubus (male) or succubus (female) are demons who seduce people into having sex with them so that they can have more demonic offspring. Vampires are creatures, sometimes demonic depending on the story, that drink human blood. They are not the same. People seem to have mixed the stories of those mythological beings into the modern perception of vampires. The lines are all blurred now in pop culture, especially because of fiction like Dracula, and later on Twilight or The Vampire Diaries or whatever. But vampires were not always seen as seductive creatures.
The original stories of vampires, especially the stories passed down in certain cultures, even in Europe, describe vampires as grotesque literally-bloodythirsty beasts, or dangerous creatures of the night. They weren't seductive or desired, they were scary. People were terrified not of being seduced and lured in, but of the vampires' supernatural strength/speed (or other supernatural abilities depending on the telling) which would make humans vulnerable in comparison. As well as the grotesque or scary appearance.
I'd like to mention a cool German vampire variant: The nachzehrer. It's most often the first person to die of an epidemic (including all the other typical origin stories). But it stays in its grave and starts eating its burial shroud, or directly itself which causes its family members life force to be drained until they are dead.
Cool, never heard of that one!! Surprising given that a lot of German folklore made its way to international readers via the Brothers Grimm. What does that roughly translate too?

Vampires have such a fascinating history.
It’s a shame that Hollywood and pop culture has pretty much deprived the true terror of vampires. They went from terrifying and intimidating with a hint of subtlety to slutty and sexy with no subtly whatsoever.

I feel like there needs to be more horror vampire movies, books, and tv series that are based on the older myths and are actually scary. Back when a vampire breaking into my house wouldn't make me thirsty it would make me fear the thirst.
A large part of why I personally think Vampires have transitioned to the Twilight version of themselves is mostly due to the semi-understated, but still rather large impact that Anne Rice's works have had on Vampire stories. In particular Interview With the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, and The Queen of the Damned. I'd been interested in her books for years after having seen the two movie adaptations as a kid, and finally got into them in recent years. Not even a fraction of the way into Lestat, and I immediately saw her influences that made their way into Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, and Being Human just to name a few off of the top of my head. Those first three really coming off as self insert fan fictions in particular. Especially when you realize that Anne's borrowed concepts are a lot more nuanced. Twilight being the worst because Stephanie Mayer just lifted Anne's over usage of the word twilight, and just used it as the title. But more to the point, the glitter skin for instance is more of a one off description of how Lestat seemingly looks as his pale flesh glistens in the moon light while he's getting to know his new abilities after just having been turned against his will. More so how without an adequate amount of blood, and the older they get, the more glass like and statuesque they appear over time. The former lover of the Queen basically just being a transparent glass husk once she drained him of all his blood and power. Where Rice differs from a lot of her copycat counterparts of modern Vampire writers is that the majority of what she writes serves as a metaphor for other ideas that speak to and question what it means to be "good," "evil," "human," or "monsters." The morality suggesting one thing, then the contextual application of certain deeds by certain parties suggesting another. With that in mind, a lot of the protagonists are easily the worst people imaginable when observed through the context of common (current) morality. But when placed in the context that they are of different eras or just undead monsters entirely, the rules change. The explanations showcasing that they are operating under a whole different set of rules biologically and mythologically. Forcing you to bare through the true horrors of what are otherwise absolutely reprehensible and/or disgusting under any other circumstance. The Vampires in question participating in all types of hedonism, incest, pedophilia, and other sorts of pure debauchery. In every sense both directly and metaphorically implied, the vampires in Anne Rice's books are presented as pure monsters who often also happen to do "good" deeds like saving the world. On the other hand, you have humans presented as monsters as well, but more so due to what they actively choose to do rather than what is in their innate nature. Differentiated by the rule of the living being vastly more clear cut and dry than the rules of the undead and damned counterparts. Lestat the lead protagonist is literally and metaphorically an incestuous predator/rapist who chooses to save individual humans, and on a couple of occasions the whole world multiple times because he believes that it's right. However when the humans participate in similar behavior or worse, it's played completely straight without romanticism or bias. Leaving you the reader to determine how you truly feel about the vampires. Even further when it's shown that some, if not all of them are just acting as they used to when they were human without the usual restrictions of morality and mortality. Does power corrupt absolutely, or are humans just naturally corrupt to varying degrees; only worsened when presented with the ultimate power? I say and ask all of that to say this. The reason why a lot of the current era copy cats fall short is because they try to carry over the intentional creepy stalkerish behavior that Rice implements without the context that it's still SUPPOSED to be "bad." They take all of the love triangles and sleek modern fashion, but leave all the substance and depth that make all of the cosmetic details actually mean something on the floor. Which is why they don't hold up and just kind of serve to degrade once great international horror icons. If you want to read all of the concepts presented in Twilight a thousand times better, then definitely check out Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles franchise. But that just says me, some goofy long winded bastard on the internet in a RUclips comments section. Do as you will. lol
You know Lestat is real right?! Me and my friend trever ran into his car in the middle of no where going to Alton in Missouri! A brand-new car that was unlock with the keys in it right after my friend trever screamed at me telling me never talk about Lestat again then bam we run into a brand-new car with Lestat on the license plates that was unlock with keys in it like i said before!!! The impresion i got when reading Rice's works was that vampires were simply a different species placed at the top at the food chain, our morality and laws doesn't apply to them, they totally aren't monsters, quite the contrary, they're far more conscious and compassionate in dealing with their cattle (us), then we are with cows or chickens. In this sense Rice's vampires have much more in common with olympian gods rather than with the vampires from folklore.

The author claims she based it on a dream she had. Tbh I don't get why she even made them vampires, like take away the blood drinking and they dont have any vampiric aspects. They're just sparkly immortals.
Actually...the whole Vampire romance thing + half-vampire child are very common well known part of Slavic Balkan mythology. There are even words for half-vampire creature: VAMPIRČE (little vampire), DAMPYR, VJEDOGONJA, VAMPIROVIĆ,...Such kind of creature possess various vampure abilities but rarely any weakness and its usually male. Dont worry, in Balkan folklore vampires dont sparcle.
As a Balkan girl I grew up listening about this LONG BEFORE Twilight saga.

@@nickolassceltmorea if you want, you can check words for half-vampire I mentioned. Balkan vampires are pale and strong, but dont sparcle. They also have HUGE sexual stamina and need. In fact, a vampire would always return to his wife or lover and have relationship with her.

I believe she came across something in their legends. Thought it was referring to vampires. Which might explain why " in the book they are referred to as the cold ones."

it's beautiful how we can both show vampires as terrifying monsters that only seek to feed on others and as romantic, dark tortured souls who seek redemption for something they lost in their human lives. it fascinates me.
Don’t forget Carmilla, published in 1872. It is a great vampire story.
I am from romania and here's a little fun fact about strigoi.when someone is born, if it has blue eyes and a very wrinkly forhead it is believed that after he dies he will become a strigoi and come to kill the closest ones to him..usually family members.so to avoid that within 24 hours of that person death one of his family members need to put a nidle or a nail in his heart...pretty creepy but than again is just a myth

The Twilight series really bothers me because they really shouldn't have been vampires. If the author took away the blooddrinking, and made the "vampires" elves, the plot would have been more coherent.
Or just blood drinking Elves. That would be cool.

@@GhostRider-mk5so Ok, so that's cool! He's _meant_ to be a superhero, instead of being a dumb-ass so-called "vampire". I don't do comics, but I've gotten into Marvel movies a bit- I love Loki & the "Norse" stuff, which also doesn't pretend to be faithful to the myths or history- it's so fantastical it's a different thing entirely, so it's just fun to see bits that _are_ accurate.
In Polish Slavic folklore we had something like "strzyga" (female, in english probably "striga") or "strzyg"/"strzygoń" (male). Those were blood thirsty monsters taking revenge on people for their past life traumas. They were born with two souls and once one died, second one was causing a person to come back to life to seek revenge by sucking someones blood or just eating their insides. Also they could turn into owls 🦉
Oh and we also had something called "wąpierze" what can be just translated as vampires and those before their death and changing into a vampire were usually whitches 😊
Sapkowski took inspiration from both of those creatures for his books 😉

Honestly, the first vanpires I had seen in my life were the ones from twilight. I didn't like them.
Then along came the Witcher 3 and I just fell in love with all the vampiric monsters from slavic folklore.
Never found something that changed my mind as fast.

I been saying for the longest the strain did vampires really good, it got overlooked in the walking dead hype even though that show had already turned super boring.

As a Romanian is really interesting to hear about our legend of strigoi connected to creatures from other cultures. I never knew that the stake method to kill the strigoi was borrowed from another culture. So thank you for that bit of information.
Even today we have a tradition on the eve of St Andrew where we rub garlic on entrances to our houses like doors and windows or just hanging garlic on the entrance to keep the strigoi away from our homes. So I guess that tradition came from the experience with that dead man knocking on peoples homes bringing death upon the families who lived there.
We still have nowadays old people recalling their experiences with the so-called strigoi from their youth or other creatures that are widely known as werewolves. Sitting down with them and listening is fascinating.

There is a book called Carmilla and it is written before Bram Stoker's Dracula. Very good book I suggest it to everyone
I am a "Boomer" in my mid-sixties. As a child, i was obsessed with vampires. I loved every movie about them i ever saw. (TV, Hammer & Holywood studios) I always cheered for the underdog monsters & got angry & sad when they died. I read the classics in the genre but was always disappointed, dissatisfied & upset at vampire portayals in both books & movies. On some odd level i felt those portrayals were 'wrong' somehow. The vampire episode in the 'Night Stalker' series was closer than most to what i thought "they" were like. Then at 19 or 20yrs of age along comes Anne Rice. I was thrilled & enthralled by her universe. Again on some odd level, i thought, "Finally!" Someone who knows the "truth" about these creatures. Her books sent me to search the historical record, wanting to know how old these stories were & what ancient culture was the 1st to name them. Rice recently ended her "Vampire Chronicles" with a trilogy just as good as the 1st three. On another note, i must confess to a 'guilty' pleasure in the Stephanie Meyers universe. Her novels added a new chapter & dimension to the mythology that i have enjoyed. Perhaps my age has something to do with it? Peace.

I learned most of this from a book I got for Christmas a few years back. "The Vampire Book" by Sally Regan. I highly recommend it.
Some of my favorite pieces of vampire fiction has to be:
- Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate. (Anime about Dracula with handguns vs nazi vampires in an over the top gorefest)
- Bram Stoker's Dracula, starring Gary Oldman. (My favorite adaption of Stoker's book)
- 30 Days of Night. (Horror movie where the vampires are monsters with little or no humanity left)
- Shiki. (Horror/drama anime that will either give you a heavy case of the feels, or you will hate it)
- Van Helsing. (Just a fun action movie)

For me, Shiki was a "love to hate it" thing. I watched it with a few people and we just laughed our asses off every episode. Some things are so ridiculous, but it's so good to watch. 😂
I watched Hellsing back in the day and am watching Ultimate now. So good!
As for the other two: solid movies! I'm also a fan of Gary Oldman's Dracula. Have you watched the one with Jonathan Rhys Meyers, from Netflix? I also enjoyed it.
Another favorite of mine is Dracula 2000.

Twilight ruined the image of vampires
Don't you dare. Mayer's Twilight is a masterpiece. Sure, it has ludicrous plot, non-working composition and side characters with shallow stereotypical personalities. However, Mayer's style of writing is simply marvellous. How she described interaction between the characters was stunning. Neither verbal, nor non-verbal communication felt artificial. And those free indirect speeches... Only other book which did this so great was Jane Eyre.
Don't get me wrong, I am not some crazy Twilight fan. (I haven't even watched the movies. I read the four books when Twilight was "hot" and I though they were pretty average.) It is just that last summer, I re-read all the novels that I have read as teenager and nearly all of them were totally idiotic (even those highly praised and famous). Twilight was by FAR the best.

@@oliverstone9577 I don't know what you mean by "problematic theme" or "mythological creature". I agree, plot was mainly terrible. But: text was amazing. Bella's thoughts, her internal world and personality were very well-conveyed - you could divulge her character trait's from that style of writing. Also, Bella's falling in love with Edward felt natural. It wasn't some kind of love at first sight bullshit or "oh I suddenly realised that I'am in love with you". It was curiosity, followed wonder, admiration and understanding. It was beautiful.
Really love the Manananggal. Hope it gets the Hollywood treatment it deserves.
These days, I interpret the term “the Hollywood treatment” to mean “the spirit of the story gets violated like it’s a 12-year-old in a Hollywood casting office”.

I've always really loved the way vampires in Buffy, the Vampire Slayer were uncompromisingly evil - at least until Spike (and ignoring Angel because he got his soul back) - and had a gruesome, twisted 'fang face' which nobody found handsome or charming. They even played on the popular concept, laughing at the way Anne Rice's novels had turned them into something romantic, which made hunting so much easier. That series was before Twilight, of course; but Supernatural sent Twilight up in one episode. It's like there are two opposing camps in popular fiction, the camp who want to subvert the original legends and make vampires noble, possibly tortured, still clinging to the vestiges of their humanity; and the camp who want to go back to their original, mythical roots. Props again to Supernatural for having a foot in both camps! Most vampires were horrible, not only murderous but cruel, but a few managed to overcome their own bloodlust and act decently. I think this idea of a grey area - the monster who has potential to be saved through its own actions - is behind the continual drive to make vampires more appealing. People find it very hard to get behind the idea of a noble vampire who looks like Nosferatu or one of those flying organ danglers! Much easier to swallow if he looks like Edward and glitters. lol. Vampires obviously resonate strongly with the human condition, our ideals, primal fears (predation; coercion) and dark subconscious desires. Me, personally, I prefer werewolves...
I actually prefer the stories about the old monstrous vampires. The modern sexually appealing vampires bore me.
Have you watched "The Strain"? The series ended about 2 or 3 years ago, but it was on FX, and their vamp-like creatures were known as the old world "Strigoi". Nothing appealing about them! Overall, it was a great series that lasted about 5 seasons.
Not unless you write them as having character, such as mine being a vampiric commando who also hunts other vampires out of revenge, and feeds off of them rather than humans.

Vampires have ALWAYS been seductive. That’s what makes them horrifying to begin with. Other fantasy monsters will kill you outright, but a vampire will toy with you like a cat.

In my country our vampire is called the socuyant. It's a lady that fly in the night as a ball of fire and sucks your blood.

Honestly I need to say, I prefer the vampires of the elder scrolls the most, I especially enjoy the concept in skyrim that as more hungry they get as more they reveal themselves, although they also get stronger. So in order to sustain hidden, you need to be well fed. And if you seek power than you need to starve for blood. I think it is an interesting concept that I would like to see more than just in skyrim, since it would create interesting choices and dilemmas in many other stories.
Fever Dream by George R.R. Martin is easily one of the best vampire stories set in America in the bayou during the 1850’s. Absolutely a triumph, I hope more vampire fans and just people who love good stories and excellent characters!🧛🏻♂️

I listen to this British pagan group called "Inkubus Sukkubus," they seem to REALLY like vampires themselves. They have a song called "Vampyre Erotica." The chorus says, "Come and take a walk with me where the angels fear to tread, kiss the flame, feel the pain in the furnace of our love!"

I thought saved by the bell came from boxing. When the boxer has been KOd and rise and then the bell rang. Announcers always use that. I believe thats the origin of this slang.

I have a book on monsters, werewolves and vampires. In it, it says that vampires were said to be compelled to count every single grain of spilled rice, seeds etc., so that a good way to keep them from leaving their gravesite or stop them chasing a victim was for seeds or whatever to be scattered/dropped at the gravesite/behind the victim.

I read a book on horror monsters when I was little that suggested that vampire myths for the European tradition came from the myths of revenants, which were a superstition born from unexplained infant deaths, miscarriages and violent deaths of adults coupled with disturbed gravesites or recent burials. We exhumed as the corpses became emaciated the skin would contract, notably about the fingernails and mouths which made people believe they had grown. Burial shrouds were also found stained with blood, leading to the idea of the dead feeding on the living. It suggested that the corpse should be reburied at the crossroads so it couldn't find it's way back to its former home and the stake was to nail it into the coffin, so that if it did wake it couldn't pull itself free.

I think my favourite representation of a vampire is Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy (mostly in the books). A nearly complete antithesis of the classic vampire: eloquent, selfless, witty and a non-blood drinker. I love what Sapkowski did with the classic vampire trope

This is a great upload as I have been meaning to look up vampire myth. So it would make the book I'm trying to write seem more based on real world encounters than some fictional stuff written about them.
I had an idea for a vampire story. In the day they appeared human and had few of the weaknesses, mostly just getting very easily sunburnt, and blistering from it. But at night they took on an a twisted, monstrous, almost eldrich form, and were murderous

For many years I always wanted to write a Vampire novel, but I didn't know how to come up with an interesting idea. Until one day a thought occurred to me. A vision in my imagination where I dreamt of a post-apocalyptic future where Vampires and all the other monsters from books and movies exist and that gave me the motivation to write this Vampire novel. Where I made these unique Vampire clans with their own distinct appearances, diverse languages, customs, powers, and abilities to kill people. These Vampires I'm writing are simply just terrifying. They are very evil and twisted, and the things they do to their prey is just horrifying. Inspired by Dracula, Salems Lot, The Necroscope series, Vampire Hunter D, The Legacy of Kain franchise, Joh Carpenter's Vampires, The Vampire the Masquerade role-playing game, and Vampire folklore and mythology. I always wanted to figure out how do I make all the monsters I grew up on scary in modern times. So I decided to give them all an upgrade if you will as a means to make them terrifying as well as mix in some cosmic horror as a looming presence behind the curtain if you will.

The vampire was probably not decapitated instantly since they used a Saw. Also a decapitated head if done fast like a Guillotine, the face can still display emotions for like two seconds until the brain shuts down.
@@gasgasgas240 but it would no longer be connected to the lungs or vocal chords, both essential for a scream. Though if they were leaning on the chest it might expel air or trapped gas and create a scream. Apparently dead bodies can be quite noisy.
@@jessicascoullar3737 Yes I know. My take on it is that if they used a Saw the guy probably had time to scream before they cut off the vocal cords. Those stories are quite insane anyway.
@@gasgasgas240 The longest a head has expressed any kind of emotion or has made a conscious action was with a man who was decapitated during the time in which the guillotine was mostly used for death penalties on france, a doctor asked him beforehand to try and stay aware during the whole process, after his head was chopped off the doctor called the head by it's name a few times and the head reacted, looking the way the doctor was, this happened for about 30 seconds before the head finally stopped any movement

I have been playing a RPG app called Ikeman Vampire. It is a Japanese game app that has a vampire take historical men and turned them into vampires to live in 19th century Paris. The RP person is a Japanese woman who meets the vampire in modern Paris and follows him into the past. The woman is stuck in the past for a month before she can go home. The whole thing is basically choosing one of the historical figures to fall into love with during that month. I love it because of the historical figures there is to choose from.

Underworld vamps are my favorite in Hollywood. Marcus’s Batman transformation was pretty cool.
Vampire The Masquerade, Castlevania, The Witcher 3 and Elder Scrolls did vampires pretty well for video games.
Legacy of Kain was also a unique take on vamps.
The Witcher universe is probably my favorite take. Having vampires coming from their own unique with multiple species that get stronger and more intelligent as they get higher on the chain.
