I loved the werewolves in Dog Soilders A LOT as a kid, but I agree that the werewolves in the Van Helsing movie were some of (if not) the best. Particularly because each wolf form looks different based on the looks of the person who is cursed.
That last point about werewolves representing an inner beast waiting to rip out is spot on. Werewolves represent the fact that every person, even the kindest and and most caring people, are still capable of commiting evil acts if pushed to it. Movies like An American Werewolf in London and the Harry Potter franchise are good examples where such werewolves, which in their human form are good, kind and caring people, but the moment they turn into werewolves, they became vicious, aggressive beasts with no control that will kill even their best friends or closest relatives. And we feel for them because in their human form they suffer immense guilt from knowing that they have hurt people in their werewolf form and had no control over it.
my favorite film werewolf design is probably hugh jackman's van helsing werewolf. Looked like a total badass. Mix that with the underworld version of voluntary transformations and you have yourself the best werewolf around in my eyes. Skyrim werewolves are pretty much that they look like van helsing's version and you can change when you want.
guitarman0365 if you've ever seen the movie bad Mona, that's a nice werewolf. As well there are the werewolves from the TV show where wolf, and who could forget the bad ass werewolf from American werewolf in London. The regional howling movies had pretty good werewolves as well. And of course the underworld series had awesome werewolves. But I'm talking about the ones that could not turn back. Not the new were breed that were almost hairless. Look up a movie called dog soldiers if you have not seen it. Those werewolves are a little different but still pretty cool.
I agree. Van Helsing might be cringy mess of a movie but I think that the character design (man, do I love Brides' transformations into vamp form!) is really cool. CGI (so, execution of design) is poor but when I imagine a vampire or a werewolf - they look like monsters from Van Helsing.
I also love the Hugh Jackman Van Helsing werewolf the best. Coolest, most aesthetically pleasing werewolf I can think of, especially with the black fur!
It happened to me with Bisclavret, one of the Lais of Marie of France (written at the 12th century!!!) about a noble werewolf double crossed by his own wife. A much less usual reference.
Wolves are territorial but also very shy & curious at the same time. Humanity has been painted wolves as savage creatures just because they hunt their domestic animals which mostly was the wolves original territory.
Pretty sure when wolves were at the height of their strength in numbers, they would kill children, they were a real issue before the 15th/16th/17th century throughout Europe..
Well actually the whole "wolves being bad" meme started when many, many children would wander into the woods and would get eaten. Thats why all those fairy tails had the big bad wolf "don't wander off into the woods child." Furthermore, while wolves are typically wary of humans, hunger is a helluva confidence boost. Finally, dont domesticate wolves. Wolves are not special dogs or different types of dogs, they are wild animals, a dog which observes you with a limp or in an obvious weakend state will probably feel bad for you. A wolf will attack and try to establish its dominace of the "pack"
One thing I wanted to make known is that the characters in Twilight are not really werewolves. They are really more shapeshifters that don't really have any of the traits of a werewolf (such as transforming during the full moon, having a weakness to silver, and being able to turn others into werewolves). Say what you want about Teen Wolf werewolves..but at least they are werewolves.
Werewolves can also be humans that transform into regular wolves, well actually dire wolves with every moon cycle, and not just the full moon, and still have the weakness to silver. Their clothes fall away as their human body becomes translucent before they transform.
Werewolves infatuated me when I was a kid, loved the violent ferocity, especially seen in Silver Bullet’s 2nd kill. Always wanted to be one. Warwick is among my favourite champs for a reason
I love Beast among us. It gave something a bit new from what you normally see in werewolf/monster movies and it had potential for more to be added to the story.
When I think werewolf, I think 17th century friendless Remus Lupin. As a human, gaunt from restless nights, afraid of close proximity with any person, scars all over. As a werewolf, taller than a man with animalistic instincts and a fight response cranked up to 11.
One of my favourite stories is that of a family of werewolves living openly in a small village - it's a brilliantly funny and wonderful book - very in line with Pratchett's level of humour
I'm surprised you didn't mention the rumor of gypsies being thought to be werewolves, along with the Irish and scottish werewolves being seen as hero mercenaries that do good shit like finding lost children and defending lords from assassins.
Yeah, that’s one of the worst parts of the two shitty latest Underworld movies. Lycans LOOKED to be the bad guys at the begining of the first Underworld, but then were revealed to have a righteous cause, fighting a war the vampires started. But then, the fourth movie writer decided to make them into complete villains, with evil motives or rather no good motive at all. Selene was fully on vampire side again and even decided to “reclaim the world for the vampire kind” by the end of it. It ruined a story that used to be good.
This vid was actually funny at start: run into a silver bullet... you're dead! heheheh and a short shot of Jacob (Twilight) pecs. But a lot of very specific information about werewolves.Hmmm, who would of thought..
Elia Soriano it was mostly Hollywood new age crap there's much more about werewolves for instance it's not actually silver that was used it was mercury aka quick silver one good book to read is the book of werewolves by Sabine Baring Gould
The skyrim mission where you retrieve the heads of the witches was a cure for them...sad that kodlak dies in the game but your able to cure him of being a werewolf
The attraction of werewolves is the draw of the feral. It's not something I am hugely fond of, and as that may indicate, I am not really all that fond of werewolves, but I can acknowledge that some people like the feral factors in werewolves. I think the appeal of vampires is very similar, though in recent eras - especially since the advent of cinema - vampires have taken on a level of elegance that werewolves have not. Werewolves are the wilder version of what I would call "The Appeal of the Feral" trope.
I like the idea of vampires and werewolves being natural enemies. Because werewolves are feral and powerful, forces of nature (the alpha trope you mentioned on the video). And vampires, in other hand, are undead abominations. So is the natural versus the unnatural, the honesty of all-out physical conflict versus the treacherous manipulation, its life versus death. And I side with the werewolves.
The art in your vids is amazing. I purchased Werewolf: The Apocalypse, shortly after it's first ed run. Thanks for the reminder of many hours with the Warriors of Gaia and those d10s.
Werewolves are one of the marquee tribes in the MTG Innistrad sets. Based in the nature colors (Red and Green), werewolves are depicted as either the primal rage of Red or the primal strength of Green being unleashed in a cursed human.
Definitely a fan of werewolves over vampires, but I don't hate vamps if they're done well. I really don't care for lore that has one of them heavily mismatched in power over the other, such as True Blood, although I realize that the focus of that series is not on any kind of war between the two so it's not important overall to the series. Underworld, for all its flaws, does match the vampire/lycan factions pretty well overall I think. If you're interested in all sources of lore, you might find World of Darkness/White Wolf RPG to be interesting. I didn't personally care for Apocalypse (the original setting) all that much, but I found Forsaken (the later body of work) to be vastly immersive. It's all down to personal taste of course. But you might find the idea of a group of supernaturally gifted shapeshifters that are tasked with keeping the spirit world in order to be an intriguing concept.
This is a great video, but it is all based on the Europe-Christian retelling, thought the Norse connection was great, but you over looked the Native American relationship with werewolves and the word itself comes from old English. As for why popular culture has changed werewolves to more beat then man, well I believe that is because they are going back to the older versions of the werewolves, and that fact that they did turn into wolves, while berserkers are different, but that’s a whole other story. Hollywood has influenced how we see and understand werewolves, which is wrong, but it’s also heavily influenced the European stories that were heavily influenced by the church. Sorry about the rant, but I like wolves and European werewolves have really hurt how we see these beautiful creatures. Thanks.
For Native Americans they are more like shapeshifters and there's other words for it but Native Americans more like a shapeshifter some Native Americans see them as the curse old medicine man or woman place it on them for doing something bad and then some Native Americans have them turn into for warriors it's pretty much depends on what tribe you're talking to I have friends and family that are Native Americans and I lived off of two reservations of two different native tribes one way up north of Minnesota the top of Minnesota I mean right at the top edge 1 in Wisconsin and then I have some native friends from the Arizona area
They aren't really werewolves in Native American folklore, but Shapeshifters. Man turning into an animal is nothing new, it's been part of cultures from around the world for centuries. In Asia you have ususally people who can turn into big cats, it depends on the region. In Europe it was wolves because they were the primary predator. In Irish folklore, for example, werewolves were seen as good creatures that helped people and took care of children. Then you have things happen like the case of the Beast of Gévaudan which were never explained and to this day we have no idea what kind of animal (if an animal at all) killed over 100 people and were people suspected werewolves.
Yeah, Skinwalkers from Native American lore and Werewolves are not the same. There’s a huge cultural aspect to Skinwalkers that werewolves don’t have and the purpose/how they’re created are different. A lot of people get them confused cause of the aspect of turning into an animal but that’s like saying werewolves are the same as kitsune cause kitsune can turn from either a human or a fox. Like someone said before, people turning into animals isn’t anything new to any culture, they’re definitely not the same.
As a monster fan I want to officially object to considering twilight as anything close a monster movie and or book. At most I consider it a bad sex fantasy written by an adult who wouldn't know a monster if it killed her.
I honestly like Tolkien's portrayal of werewolves - big wolves bred by Melkor which are possessed by evil spirits. They have big role in the story of Beren and Lúthien. Interestingly they aren't enemies with vampires, because they are both servants of Melkor and Sauron.
I'm a big werewolf fan and I'm very impressed by this explanation. It's really awesome how powerful a werewolf is and what's more interesting is how it became popular in movies, tv and more. Very well said here. Didn't like the fact the Baron lost his wife and her new husband a knight paid a price too. Just seems unfair if you ask me.
Great video, but you left out one weakness. As exploited by a band of braves kids that go by the name Monster Squad. You just have to kick wolfman in the nards.
I was always a big of fan them being able to freely shift and get basically super powers in human form. My favorite design is the one where they look like a massive hulking huminoid wolf. Like in Skyrim or Van Helsing.
I love werecats and wererats etc. There are so many books out there that uses lycanthrope with different animals. I just wish movies and TV would catch up.
Actually Teen wolf has a variety of were creatures including werewolf werecoyote werejaguar lowenmench (part wolf part lion) werechameleons and Kitsune amongst other things
Well, there is a tv series with similar things: Teen Wolf. Obviously, it's about werewolves and they are the biggest part of it but there also are werecoyotes, werejaguars, lowemench (lion and wolf) etc
particularly the one in the very beginnning anna and velkin were hunting, and van's werewolf form as well. Velkin's form was less appealing to me but meh all in all i would still take velkin's form over mostly any other cinema design of a werewolf. The skyrim game werewolves look very similar to van helsing's form which is why i like them in the game.
Ricardo Harrison well they both drool but yes werewolves on average are stronger. Even if we compare the strongest werewolf and vampire, the wolf still wins. Fenris vs Dracula. Fenris is a godslayer. Yes Fenris is werewolf since a werewolf is part wolf. Fenris is part Giant that looks like a wolf and not to mention that werewolf lore originated in Germanic and Norse tribes.
Vampires were traditionally werewolves. Check Greek/Slavic shit, which is almost the only source for wereWOLVES specifically. Werecats were THE basic werecritter globally.
Werewolves rule, i dont get the hate against teen wolf, the werewolves were at least dangerous and the story is bloody enough, and not swallow. And they dont play second fiddle to vampires.
I've been watching your channel for a while now, mainly the Greek myth ones, I really like your videos and your calm, soothing voice. :) I was also pleasantly surprised by seeing your sense of humor in this video making fun of modern werewolves, that was hilarious. LOL
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos, I generally try and remain informative but I do feel like my videos would be better if I did integrate more of my humour into them.
Fair enough. :) I do like a lot of your videos like your calming Greek myth videos, but yes, I really did enjoy this one, it was such a contrast to what I usually hear from you and I liked it. LOL Now you should do a video on vampires and poke fun at Twilight's sparkly vampires. :P
Ah yes the she-wolf who suckled the twins. I really love that myth, it is quite heartwarming; truly shows how loving wolves really are. And Lady Lupa isn't the only she-wolf to find a human infant to nurse. The Legend of Asena, a she-wolf with a sky blue mane and is also considered the mother of the Turkish people has a similar sounding story.
Also Rudyard Kipling's Jungle book has Mowgli being raised by wolves. But then there are real life people who were found to have been raised by wolves, dogs, and a few other animals.
Mythology & Fiction Explained, I have a few of your videos pulled up right now and just found your channel yesterday. I just enjoyed watching the first video of yours I have seen, which was on Lycaonean, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I'm sorry, but I may disagree about the Berserker. They may have worn animal pelts, as we do have one drawing of them wearing animal pelts, not sure when it was made, though. The picture depicts someone with a horned helmet and someone wearing a wolf's head, but it seems to me that they're just performing such ritual, which becomes more apparent when you learn that the "horned helmets," such as the ones found in Vikso helmets, are believed to have been ceremonial. But what about the mentions of animal skins in the Sagas? It's possible that's just a poetic circumlocution for "maille." That happens all the time in the Sagas, as I'm sure you're aware, but, for some reason, people (myself included until recently) never thought wearing a bear skin or wolf hide could just be a fancy way of saying "armor." As for them charging into battle, they were most often duelist-nuisances in the Sagas (again, I'm sure you do know that; I just thought I'd point it out for anyone who may think otherwise). About the plant: I'm actually not sure about this one. If you could provide some sources for this, I'd genuinely appreciate it. "or maybe that was just a regular Friday night for a Viking." I know that's a joke, and I won't hold it against you. I just want to explain to anyone who may take it seriously (as I already know for a fact some people believe this): Vikings wore armor. The *_Mythical_* Berserker, which is what he describes, as well as the actual Berserker, was not common. :D I'm enjoying the video so far (I'm not all the way through it, yet)! I just wanted to point out some things, because I've found there's so many contradicting theories on Berserker's armor alone... 3:07 Oh goodness, this guy... I was just reading about him for the second time last night. Nice summary, by the way. 4:00 What he's talking about here is in one of the more famous Sagas, the Saga of the Volsungs. The Saga of the Volsungs is the Norse prototype to the Germanic Nibelungenlied. If you don't know what that is, don't worry. The Volsunga Saga talks about (a lot, but I'll condense it much) the hero Sigurd slaying the "dragon" (he's really just a giant serpent) Fafnir. Like all/most Sagas, this one starts out with Sigurd's ancestors, one of whom was named Sigmund. Sigmund was trying to raise a child named Sinfjotli, so that they both could one day kill the King of their land. Sigmund took Sinfjotli out into the woods, and they found hunters, whom they killed (so Sinfjotli could train). When rifling through their possessions, they found the wolf-skin belts this guy is talking about. They put them on, but then realized they could not take them off until every 9th(?) night. When they put them on, they turned into werewolves. They lived this way for a while, killing more people, until one day they wanted to split up to go hunting for people (whom they may or may not have eaten; it doesn't say whatsoever). Sigmund told Sinfjotli that, if he should find more than 7(?) people, he should howl for help. Sigmund went off, found 7 people, howled, and they killed those people. Sinfjotli went off, found 11, killed them all himself, but was injured. When Sigmund came by and found him injured, Sinfjotli said, "You howled and I came when there were but 7, whereas I, who am just a child in comparison to you, killed 11 alone." Sigmund, still in wolf-form, grew angry and lunged at Sinfjotli, attacking his throat (but not killing him). Then someone happened that I won't explain, Sinfjotli was healed. After this, they cursed the wolf-skin belts and threw them away, presumably because they were making them more and more vicious, though I'm not sure. Mr. Myth Man, I'd also like to add that, in the same Saga, that King's mother also was rumored to be the wolf who killed the 9 brothers of Sigmund. She had been turned into a wolf, I believe, by the King (which means he practiced magic, which means he was _ergi,_ which means he could be killed).
You never have to apologize for disagreeing, when it comes to the topics I cover there is so much to them it's almost impossible to cover all aspects or even claim that everything you said is correct as so many sources often contradict each other. I generally enjoy when viewers discuss the topics especially if it's something they are passionate about, I don't claim to be an expert just someone who tries to learn and share what i've learnt with other people, I appreciate hearing others interpretations since it only serves in furthering knowledge.
Thanks :D "almost impossible to cover all aspects" Yeah, I understand xD Each video would be hours long. I guess RUclipsrs have lives, too... This is why we need AI RUclipsrs to take over, and become 100% -subservient- efficient. Cover every topic ever in one video. "so many sources often contradict each other." I know that feeling... I got into Norse Sagas and Myth October 1st, 2017, and have already realized that. Might I ask: what sources do you use? Are there any good websites specifically dedicated to anything you cover here (except Norse Myth; I've got plenty of that :D)? Greek Myth, Roman Myth, legends, folktales, etc.?
Jack You should be able to get greek myth for free online. I haven’t heard anyone talk about how “wolf skin” could just mean armor. I was under the impression that they went out of their way to point out that berserkers wore animal skins. This reliance on animal skins brings to mind the legends of skinwalkers. Both beings are/were often feared within their societies so I have heard suggestions that both use dark rituals or magick.
Geordin Soucie, Thanks, I have found sources! :D it's possible "wolf hide" and "bear skin" meant armor. Anders Winroth proposes that idea in his book _The Age of the Vikings,_ but I don't think I can disagree, because there are Roman depictions of Vikings wearing wolf heads, but they seem to be performing some ritual. Since I've made that comment, I've reconsidered. It's possible they used dark rituals or magic, as it's often mentioned with regards to them in, at least, Egils Saga and the Saga of the People of Vatnsdal. Oftentimes it's either the Berserker or his mother who practices magic.
Jack I believe you can thank the Greeks for the silver harming vampires and werewolves. Of course there are other cultures with silver being a "holy metal" or cursed. If you know of some feel free to show off.
You touched briefly on the werewolves’ relationship with vampires. Would you consider doing a video on vampires? I really enjoyed this video and I think it would be very interesting to see the other side of the story!
This is why classic horror is better than modern horror. Classic horror relies on tension and dread from the monster that creates a lasting effect of fear. While today's horror relies on jumpscares that create a quick adrenaline response that goes away quickly. Same goes for the constant blood and guts on modern day horror. Werewolves i feel especially capitalize on this dread, Because werewolves create this everlasting feeling of. "When this character transforms. Who is going to die, And who is going to live." Classic horror creates a long lasting fear response. That's why I like it so much.
I read once that humanoid werewolves were made up by Hollywood in the first place, humanoid ranging from wolves with a human torso and that walk upright to the hair dudes in Teen Wolf. In folklore stories, werewolves turn into creatures that resemble wolves for the most part, often only being bigger than real wolves, and having their human eye color.
I just found your channel tonight. You have some very interesting videos, I only wish most of them were not so short. I have a topic to suggest, the pre-flood giants and monsters created by the fallen angels.
True, they were actually humans with the ability to take the form of animals. But a passing mention of them would have been nice. Werewolves are merely the most well-known of werebeasts in the public consciousness today. There were also such things as werecats, werebears, weretigers, and many more varieties.
@@silverdragonwolf1 The stories of lycans/werebeast exist across the world, with the biggest preditor in the region often being this beast that you could turn into. The wolf being a top predator in Europe and because of christianity we probably have a main focus on the werewolf, atleast in the west
Finally someone who hates teen wolf as much as I do lol new sub, I studied greek mythology in high school (we have a classical high school here in Italy where you learn to read and translate ancient greek and latin, it's hard but also really interesting) and I love it :)
BereniceAllanPoe Translating must be hard, but I wish that we had that class in Canada (all we get is one class about mythology in grade 7 and that’s it.).
Dylan Tennant it's fucking hard as shit lol we started as 29 and only 13 of us were left the last year, the others either gave up and went to another school or were dismissed as they failed the class. I've failed a year too (a lot of things were going on in my family so I didn't really had the right mindset) and I had to retake it. But in the end being able to translate a myth on your own reading it in its original language is a privilege, as you can see all the details and shades of meaning of each single word.
Can’t wait for your Vampire mythology & and fiction explained video :D It would be interesting to seeing your point of view on how in some literature, movies and video games vampires have become vulnerable to silver weapons and objects as well in some universes , Eg Blade series, True blood , Dracula 2000. Vampires have such a divers power and weakness range across the board, ranging from magical abilities and in some cases being vulnerable to water like in the video games legacy of Kain.
I think my favorite reason I’ve come across for werewolves and vampires to be enemies is that they’re diametrically opposed. That is to say, werewolves are emblematic of everything savage and primal, and are thus firmly tied to nature itself. Vampires, as members of the undead, are a perversion of the natural cycle of life and death, and so are inherently unnatural. Therefore, since one is a race that is firmly aligned with nature and the other is a race that defies nature just by existing, it makes sense that the two would at least feel a strong sense of antipathy or aversion for each other.
Before Lon Chaney Jr. did his famous werewolf films and got the Werewolf ball rolling there was a film made that told how base on folklore the werewolf was created. It wasn't being bitten another wolf but by a flower. I am trying to find that reference again, There was also a film made in 1930 showing the same method..
Yeah me too I LOVE teen wolf best tv show EVER Who is your favourite character I love derek or isaac or the twins or lydia or basically everyone but theo
The mythology of the show was good. The major problem is that the werewolves didn’t even look like werewolves, but rather just a bunch of shirtless Magic Mike-era Channing Tatum lookalike Calvin Klein underwear models wearing Oscar the grouch makeup. At least the Underworld werewolves looked like werewolves. Right?
Your comment about calling out birth names actually makes me think of an interesting possibility for writers. Suppose you have two options, either have a close cadre of friends who know your secret and can shout out your name to prevent you from rampaging or you like rampaging and change your name so you can't be changed back. Actually, a third option could be that lycanthropy is a punishment that binds the curse to a new name, which the werewolf is forced to use until someone who knew them beforehand speaks their birth name. It's actually more interesting than you give it credit for here.
I've always been a werewolf. Never liked vampires much...so that's my cup of tea. I'm pro werewolf. A+++ Favorite films are: American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Dog Soldiers, Bad Moon, Silver Bullet, Mexican Werewolf in Texas, and still have to check out Wolf Cop. lol
There is a werewolf Rp game called werewolf the apocalypse where you can use 5 forms human, halfman half wolf, sorta like the Skyrim werewolf form, a huge dire wolf form that can go on two legs briefly, and a wolf form. I personally like how you have the option to pick your form and just thought id mention it.
I just like the fact that the werewolf picture from the thumbnail is from a Runescape novel. That picture is most likely the most famous art of a werewolf.
Weakness: Wolfsbane aka Aconite,Monkshood, A Silver Bullet and also fire because like anyone would die from being burnt alive am i right? Also in most movies like Underworld, Originals, Vampire Diares, Legacies and Van Helsing a werewolf bite will kill a vampire because of werewolf venom and the bite always changes to host but because a vampire is already dead the werewolf bite just kills them instead because the bite cant change something thats already dead
Dog Soldiers werewolves kicked ass, also American werewolf in London, bad moon animatronic werewolf looked kool as well. Then you have the howling. I believe we need to bring back the viciousness of werewolves and vamps.
The Vanhelsing vampires and wearwolves are the best, and the blood and chocolate wolves with their transformation and what they look like are just beautiful
"Their Children were born without noses."
So that's what happened to Voldemort!

So I guess that theory part with the loss of clothes that turns you into a werewolf is how we get the phrase " the clothes makes the man "
"And less the clothes makes the beast"
I love Beast among us. It gave something a bit new from what you normally see in werewolf/monster movies and it had potential for more to be added to the story.
As much as I was honestly shocked by the rage and frustration expressed in "it's come to this!" I was overjoyed to hear it echo my own! Nicely done!
'Even a Man who is pure in heart, and says his prayers by night;
May become a Wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright...'
This sounds familiar but can’t remember what movie.
@@zerokool-2058 It's taken from the first Lon Chaney Universal 'Wolf Man' movie from 1941(?)...hope that helps, yes?
"No that wasn,t porn"
Me: it was just twilight 😂😂😂
it was teen wolf
both you dipshits
It was a mix between that and teen wolf
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What’s the difference
You had me dying when you started the sax music with the twilight scene😂
I thought that too considering my grandfather's Roma (gypsy) tribe would be called the wolves of the forest.
Remember when underworld treated the lycans as people and not stereotypical monster canon fodder?
You can actually relate why are they figthing, slaves, humilliated, always by those assholes vampires
@@TrenElZombie Because vampires are known to be snooty by nature and think themselves above other supernatural species especially lycans.
@@catspaw3092 i believe they are
Yeah, that’s one of the worst parts of the two shitty latest Underworld movies.
@@drlecter2077 yeah man, I missed those being hybrid story line
I thoroughly enjoy all your videos. Thanks for the great content, visuals, and soothing narration! 👍
The rant🤣, "Why it has come to this!?". busted my gut, haha! I feel you.😂
Werewolves are one of the marquee tribes in the MTG Innistrad sets.
Interesintg rpg about werewolf will check it out
This is a great video, but it is all based on the Europe-Christian retelling, thought the Norse connection was great, but you over looked the Native American relationship with werewolves and the word itself comes from old English.
Hey man I just discovered your channel and I love it. I hope you keep doing this. Thank you.
That intro was funny, you are funny! Also another great vid 👍
As a monster fan I want to officially object to considering twilight as anything close a monster movie and or book.
At most I consider it a bad sex fantasy written by an adult who wouldn't know a monster if it killed her.
8:17; Ahh! It's Remus lupin, one of my favorite characters from Harry Potter,
This channel is pure gold I am watching all the videos from the very beginning
I enjoyed this!!! Very interesting!!!Thanks for putting this up on here!!
I honestly like Tolkien's portrayal of werewolves - big wolves bred by Melkor which are possessed by evil spirits. They have big role in the story of Beren and Lúthien. Interestingly they aren't enemies with vampires, because they are both servants of Melkor and Sauron.
Why are werewolves so popular? Because we freaking said so.
Keep up the good work. I find your videos easy to watch and interesting.
Love your voice. It is so calm. Love the stories and your channel in general 😍
The beginning was great 😂😂
I'm a big werewolf fan and I'm very impressed by this explanation. It's really awesome how powerful a werewolf is and what's more interesting is how it became popular in movies, tv and more. Very well said here. Didn't like the fact the Baron lost his wife and her new husband a knight paid a price too. Just seems unfair if you ask me.
I love you showed a pic of a Worgen at the end. One of my favorite races in WoW.
I found this information to be very valuable and I enjoyed the images. Thank you for the video.
I liked the twighlight-bashing :)
Also nice content!
Great video, but you left out one weakness. As exploited by a band of braves kids that go by the name Monster Squad. You just have to kick wolfman in the nards.
It's only logical, humans have nards and so do wolves
I was always a big of fan them being able to freely shift and get basically super powers in human form.
My favorite design is the one where they look like a massive hulking huminoid wolf. Like in Skyrim or Van Helsing.
In modern times, story originated in France. Around 1700s. Big wolf was killing villagers. Was killed by a silver bullet by a hunter .
I though the story originated in Galicia(Spain)
I love werecats and wererats etc. There are so many books out there that uses lycanthrope with different animals. I just wish movies and TV would catch up.
This isn't werelords.
I'm currently writing a book that has a girl who can change into whatever big cat she wants, so long as she's wearing that cats skin lol
Actually Teen wolf has a variety of were creatures including werewolf werecoyote werejaguar lowenmench (part wolf part lion) werechameleons and Kitsune amongst other things
Basically fursonas
Well, there is a tv series with similar things: Teen Wolf. Obviously, it's about werewolves and they are the biggest part of it but there also are werecoyotes, werejaguars, lowemench (lion and wolf) etc
Interesting classic monster, one of my favorites are the Van Helsing ones
Kenneth Satria same here I think out of all werewolves shown in movies they were the best
particularly the one in the very beginnning anna and velkin were hunting, and van's werewolf form as well. Velkin's form was less appealing to me but meh all in all i would still take velkin's form over mostly any other cinema design of a werewolf. The skyrim game werewolves look very similar to van helsing's form which is why i like them in the game.
guitarman0365 his name was valkin by the way
Awesome video!
I adore watching thy visual essays. Thou obviously dost extensive research to create these magnificent videos.
Werewolves rule Vampires Drool
Ricardo Harrison well they both drool but yes werewolves on average are stronger. Even if we compare the strongest werewolf and vampire, the wolf still wins. Fenris vs Dracula. Fenris is a godslayer. Yes Fenris is werewolf since a werewolf is part wolf. Fenris is part Giant that looks like a wolf and not to mention that werewolf lore originated in Germanic and Norse tribes.
Oh hell no lol vampires rule werewolves drool lol
Vampires were traditionally werewolves. Check Greek/Slavic shit, which is almost the only source for wereWOLVES specifically. Werecats were THE basic werecritter globally.
Werewolves rule, i dont get the hate against teen wolf, the werewolves were at least dangerous and the story is bloody enough, and not swallow. And they dont play second fiddle to vampires.
No vampires suck
I view werewolves as more then what we humans view, they might be peaceful creatures that want nothing more than to be left alone.
12:10
Dude, you made me laugh! This was a great video! 🤣
This is still one of my favorites....well pretty much anything werewolf.....
there's an anime where certain people can turn into wolves at will, and they do not lose control. they can also turn normal whenever they wish too
Beautiful video!
awesome stuff! keep it up :D I can definitely see this channel growing
Thank you! I hope so too :D
Maine and alden richard
To watch tv. Com maine and alden n
Could you make a video on Lady lupa the foster mother of romules and reemus
It's possible that's just a poetic circumlocution for "maille." That happens all the time in the Sagas, as I'm sure you're aware, but, for some reason, people (myself included until recently) never thought wearing a bear skin or wolf hide could just be a fancy way of saying "armor."
As for them charging into battle, they were most often duelist-nuisances in the Sagas (again, I'm sure you do know that; I just thought I'd point it out for anyone who may think otherwise).
About the plant: I'm actually not sure about this one. If you could provide some sources for this, I'd genuinely appreciate it.
"or maybe that was just a regular Friday night for a Viking."
I know that's a joke, and I won't hold it against you. I just want to explain to anyone who may take it seriously (as I already know for a fact some people believe this): Vikings wore armor. The *_Mythical_* Berserker, which is what he describes, as well as the actual Berserker, was not common. :D
I'm enjoying the video so far (I'm not all the way through it, yet)!
When Sigmund came by and found him injured, Sinfjotli said,
"You howled and I came when there were but 7, whereas I, who am just a child in comparison to you, killed 11 alone."
Sigmund, still in wolf-form, grew angry and lunged at Sinfjotli, attacking his throat (but not killing him).
Thanks :D
"almost impossible to cover all aspects"
Yeah, I understand xD Each video would be hours long. I guess RUclipsrs have lives, too... This is why we need AI RUclipsrs to take over, and become 100% -subservient- efficient. Cover every topic ever in one video.
"so many sources often contradict each other."
I know that feeling...
Jack
You should be able to get greek myth for free online.
Geordin Soucie,
Thanks, I have found sources! :D
it's possible "wolf hide" and "bear skin" meant armor.
I like werewolves because they're awesome. I find it terrifying about a person can from harmless to terrifying and beastlike in a few minutes.
I just love Werewolves they're so awesome!!!!
Right. They just... seem so cool
The Celtic werewolves were different they were protective
those were the ones from Irish folklore
Thanks for sharing
Awesome and cool!
Ok buddy
Loved the design on van helsing's werewolf
I just found your channel tonight. You have some very interesting videos, I only wish most of them were not so short.
I have a topic to suggest, the pre-flood giants and monsters created by the fallen angels.
You forgot to mention the Aboriginal American stories of skinwalkers.
Silver Dragon Wolf skinwalkers aren't werewolves they change into any animal and even human they are more akin to shape shifters
True, they were actually humans with the ability to take the form of animals. But a passing mention of them would have been nice. Werewolves are merely the most well-known of werebeasts in the public consciousness today. There were also such things as werecats, werebears, weretigers, and many more varieties.
Silver Dragon Wolf and Werelions who ruled the were beast
Not my opinion it's actually true
They are just shape-shifting warlokes.
Cactus Jack I hated it too while I had to do it lol but it really enriched me like no other school could. Plus, university is a breeze after that
BereniceAllanPoe Translating must be hard, but I wish that we had that class in Canada (all we get is one class about mythology in grade 7 and that’s it.).
I think this fun I always want to study every country mythology
Germanic wolf cult! And nobody likes teen wolf 🤭😟 which is a good thing!
8:47 Wolf Man: Played by Lon Chaney Jr.
I love all the movies featuring the "Wolf Man"
Can’t wait for your Vampire mythology & and fiction explained video :D
It would be interesting to seeing your point of view on how in some literature, movies and video games vampires have become vulnerable to silver weapons and objects as well in some universes , Eg Blade series, True blood , Dracula 2000.
Vampires have such a divers power and weakness range across the board, ranging from magical abilities and in some cases being vulnerable to water like in the video games legacy of Kain.
Just realised this video was months old... lolzer
sadly Werewolves along with Vampires aren't cool anymore. Twilight killed it for everybody.
Twilight and its progenies. Twilight didn't do it alone.
Zelph The Webmancer - Canal GXZ fair enough. Twilight *AND* Underworld.
You forgot the teen wolf
Gilberto Tabares but Underworld Vampires and Werewolves are the actual good werewolves
Twilight and Teen Wolf are terrible.
Underworld is alright; Lycans have cool designs.
Nah, film and video game folk manufactured the conflict to make more money because kids were getting bored with traditional story lines.
I'm a late with this comment but I love werewolves and was glad to see a video from you on this one!
Before Lon Chaney Jr. did his famous werewolf films and got the Werewolf ball rolling there was a film made that told how base on folklore the werewolf was created. It wasn't being bitten another wolf but by a flower. I am trying to find that reference again,
There was also a film made in 1930 showing the same method..
Hey I happen to enjoy teen wolf !
Yeah me too I LOVE teen wolf best tv show EVER
Who is your favourite character I love derek or isaac or the twins or lydia or basically everyone but theo
Percy Jackson Fan 01 love me some Scott
stiles?!?!!?
Becca Tait I think Scott’s my favorite in the series next to Stiles and Derek
The mythology of the show was good. The major problem is that the werewolves didn’t even look like werewolves, but rather just a bunch of shirtless Magic Mike-era Channing Tatum lookalike Calvin Klein underwear models wearing Oscar the grouch makeup.
At least the Underworld werewolves looked like werewolves.
Right?
Me: Werewolf? But he's right over there.
I like both Vampires and Werewolves even though I would be a werewolf if I had to pick.
Your voice is so different from your past videos to the videos you make now ❤️❤️
When I clicked on this video, I wasn’t expecting to be scarred by men who hate shirts.
I only turn to werewolf once a year, every October is the same for me.
;^;
Yeah sure
Lol
Loved this one. Do cynocephaly. The history of these stories of dog headed men is fascinating. Especially considering the source.
A+++ Favorite films are: American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Dog Soldiers, Bad Moon, Silver Bullet, Mexican Werewolf in Texas, and still have to check out Wolf Cop. lol
Right on brother
I've always been a werewolf kind of person as well
Haha such hate against teenwolf😂 I just finished the series and it's really not *that* bad. And yes. Sexappeal. Yes.😂😂😂👍
Teen wolf is awesome. They explained the shifting issue. Its better than underworld
Teen Wolf is awesome! I love it
Weakness: Wolfsbane aka Aconite,Monkshood, A Silver Bullet and also fire because like anyone would die from being burnt alive am i right? Also in most movies like Underworld, Originals, Vampire Diares, Legacies and Van Helsing a werewolf bite will kill a vampire because of werewolf venom and the bite always changes to host but because a vampire is already dead the werewolf bite just kills them instead because the bite cant change something thats already dead
Very cool
A fine video
Him: why are werewolves popular?
Me: idk wut
Him: sex appeal
Me: spits out my drink
Dog Soldiers werewolves kicked ass, also American werewolf in London, bad moon animatronic werewolf looked kool as well. Then you have the howling. I believe we need to bring back the viciousness of werewolves and vamps.
The Vanhelsing vampires and wearwolves are the best, and the blood and chocolate wolves with their transformation and what they look like are just beautiful
I honestly loved Teen Wolf
