I went to the Whaley house a few years ago. It was the one time that the weather in San Diego was terrible. Hot and humid and miserable. I went by myself as my husband was at comicon getting his nerd on. I walked through the house not feeling anything out of the ordinary and as I walked down the stairs I looked up and said to Mr. Whaley, " Okay, I'm leaving." At that very moment I heard a deep, manly voice "sigh" as though disappointed that I was leaving. I was the only person touring the house at the time so I know it wasn't a tourist. Altbough the weather was sweltering and I was melting in the heat, that moment sent absolute chills down my spine. That was probably 15 years ago and I will never get that voice out of my head.

I used to eat at the Olde Town Mexican Cafe across the street from the Whaley House when I lived in Chula Vista back in the 90's and actually went through the house on a tour one night before they closed.
Not much to report except after leaving the billiards room and about to go down the hall I heard the distinct "clack!" of say a cue ball hitting another and the sound was much more robust than you hear these days. I thought it was one of the guides putting things away for the night...
Years later contemplating the sound I heard I did some research and found out that billiard balls were made from ivory in the 1800's which does indeed have a deeper robust sound.
Chalk that one up to an experience in the Whaley House! (no pun intended.... Or was it?)

Spent a lot of time in and around the Whaley House. Started ghost hunting there with a camera, video recorder, and a voice recorder back in early 90's. Sat upstairs to try and smell the cigar smoke, look for the moving rocking chair, and listen for whispers from the master bedroom. There was also a story about feeling a choking sensation when walking around the right side of the house, so we looked for that, too.
One year for Halloween, they did nighttime (or midnight - I don't remember exactly) tours of the house where we sat in the courtroom for a presentation, then they dimmed the lights and let us walk around and ask questions and just hang out. We took a bunch of equipment in and took a ton of pics and video. Pored over it all, but didn't find anything of note. However, a woman in the group ahead of us said she saw a headless soldier in an old uniform walking through the courtyard, which wasn't a ghost I had heard of before. She was pretty freaked, though - we got to talk to her for a few minutes before she left.
Anyway, visited that place many times over the years and took a lot of pictures and video. I think in all of it there were a just but couple of small strange things - one was a cold spot on the stairs, and another was hearing someone taking a couple of steps on the upper floor. Honestly, though, neither was definitive, and I wouldn't really count those as a personal "experience." But the Whaley House is also just a fantastic piece of history for the city, so go there to see it as a museum first, then look for ghosts as a bonus.
If you ever visit San Diego, be sure and check out all of Old Town. Aside from the Whaley House, there's also the Estudillo House, which is also supposed to be super haunted and active. It's not too far from the Whaley House at all, so you can easily do both at the same time. Plus there's a candy shop right next to the Estudillo, so like... bonus.

As a native San Diegan, my daughter and I took a paranormal tour of Old Town for her 20th birthday. Although we had taken several tours of the Whaley House over the years. This time we walked through Old Town, stopping at various buildings and the graveyard, and finishing the tour in the yard of the Whaley House. We were given EMF detectors, and several of them lit up right after my daughter and I both felt a distinct coldness between us. This was a warm April night with no wind. So feeling the coldness first (neither of us said anything at the time as we tend to be rather shy in groups) and then having the detectors nearest to us light up seemed to indicate that something or someone otherworldly may have been there between us that night. We discussed what we had felt only after the tour broke up, and we felt more convinced given that both of us had felt the coldness independently. It was quite the birthday present!! :)

I've lost both a principal (along with her husband and two children) in a car accident when they drove into a small lake, a former PE teacher, a friend of mine on an ATV, another who was also on the ATV was seriously injured, a friend of my little brother's, little sister, who was nearly decapitated in a hit and run and killed instantly, and one of my best friend's sister. I've been to the Whaley house and even though it was packed with tourists shuffling through, looking into the ropes off rooms, I remember the excitement when a rocking chair began to rock faster and faster by itself in a roped off room and in the kitchen pots and pans and utensils started rattling. There were tons of people there and it was a hot, sunny day. It wasn't scary at the time because it just didn't seem real or threatening, because of all the noise and people. I was only 11 or 12 and didn't know why we were there, really anyway, we were just visiting every tourist attraction in San Diego. I never thought about it again until I saw it online in the last few years...
We also went to the Winchester House in San Jose, Ca.

I live in San Diego and have been to the Whaley House few times. It really is kind of creepy inside. They say you can smell cigar smoke and/or perfume. I've smelled both but assumed it was the people working there. I've walked by the house at night with friends. And you can't help but feel the sadness coming from the building. The vibe makes you to not want to visit. I haven' been inside for a few years. And I don't want to.

Most of the castle is still closed of for renovations, but what is open and finished really is a sight to see. I’ve visited the Whaley house plenty of times and I can tell you the whole area of old town has a Eerie vibe to it The house seems cold and when you walk in it’s like traveling back in time whenever I went I was always drawn to the backyard it was always around 11pm and I was always alone there. One time I was with family and after we visited the house we walked back to our room and while we were walking there was an empty house that had a porch light we knew it was empty because it was under construction the light was in good condition but for some reason as we walked by it’s shut off and I had a cold feeling on my neck like someone was watching us. The light then turned back on like someone was inside messing with us but we could see through the windows we all look at each other and ran “I was with my mom who isn’t a believer” when it happened she looked at me with fear and we ran it’s hard to explain but how it happened definitely felt paranormal my brother who was 11 started to cry and panicked

I'm a California native and have been to the Whaley house several times. I've seen the keys on the piano move of their own accord. The flag in the courtroom billowed out by itself. I've seen Thomas Whaley on the stairs in the house. He appeared to me as a sort of gray and black figure but certain facial and clothing details were quite discernable. The last time I was there I sat on the front porch late at night on my way back to downtown San Diego. I heard heavy footfalls behind me as though someone wearing boots were walking up on me and I smelled the distinctive odor of cigar smoke. I looked up and above my head was a pall of swirling smoke. Interesting to note Thomas Whaley did smoke cigars as was the fashion of men in that era. I simply spoke and said Mr Whaley I don't mean to intrude. I'll be on my way shortly just taking a quick rest before I continue on my way. Oddly the footsteps receded back the way they had come. Bear in mind it was well after midnight when this incident occurred and I was the only one walking around old Town that night. It was late 1999- 2000 when this occurred. My first visit was in 1997 with a high school trip. Believe me or not I don't care. I have simply relayed my own personal experience with the Whaley house.

It sounds like Mr Whaley is a gentleman sprit, as long as you explain why you're there especially at odd hours or are polite to him he's polite back. Curious. Sounds like San Diego is a place I'll visit if I ever get to visit the US.

I live in San Diego, I go to old town quite often, especially since I work right next to there. When I was younger my mom paid to go on a ghost tour at old town it was on Halloween we brought our therapy dog to help my brother not have a panic attack, so the ghost tour consisted of us going into all the old homes and hearing the ghost stories from them, at the end of the tour we would go into the most haunted home which was the Whaley house, once we got inside my dog flipped out he started barking and barking and standing infront of my family and I as if he was protecting us from something. We ended up leaving the tour a little early cause we we’re to freaked out after that. My grandma is convinced to this day that our dog saw something that we couldn’t see.

I live in San Diego County and have visited the Whaley House a few times. I have quite a few pictures with orbs and one in the theater room with a woman's face. Surprisingly though, you don't really get a "scary" feeling when there but more of sympathy feeling. I had an evp as well on an old phone where you can hear a little girl's voice mumbling but the phone broke a while ago so I don't have it anymore but I still look back at this pictures and it's really cool to have proof of my experience there.
There are also numerous photos from other visitors in an album that they have there and on the SD Ghost Hunter's site they have evps.
Was finally going to go ghost hunting there (they have a few midnight ghost hunting tours a year) but due to covid it didn't happen.

Once again, an enjoyable series of stories. However, #3 was a bit confusing using both Bob and Bill.
tory #4 was close to home. As a native San Diegan I spent many hours at the Whaley House. I remember cold spots on the stair case, and on one memorable occasion, the rocking chair in the nursery began to slowly rock. Haven't been back since Old Town became new Old Town.,

I've been to the Whaley House in San Diego numerous times but my all-time most rememberable experience I was walking into the dining room and at the time it was an open museum so the air was just flowing through and I had walked into the dining room and all the air with steel and it got stuffy it was no need for it to be still and stuffy the house was open on a cold winter's Eve. I've also captured a bunch of orbs on the outside of the building. I love going to the Whaley House the only thing left for me to do is go to the Winchester

i live in san diego! when you said san diego, i knew you were going to be talking about the whaley house. it's creepy, but also amazing in the aspect of how well it's been preserved. i went on a "spooky tour" a couple years ago around halloween with my cousins, and we believe we actually caught a picture of yankee jim in the upstairs living area. going there is what actually made me start to believe in ghosts because there were so many weird things that happened that night, i just couldn't explain it.

Michael lives in one of the *MOST HAUNTED* areas of the UK!
    Clitheroe Castle has ghosts;
Much of this site dates back to 1186. From former royal owners to tales of woe these buildings have seen a lot and are bounded by historic battles, witchcraft and executions. With poltergeist activity and many sightings it’s regarded one of England’s most haunted places. Unusual feelings of sadness here are usually followed by the sighting of a maid. A man woman and child are often seen together along with cavalier officers, a lady in white and a woman that stares through windows.
Michael lives in (the Borough of Ribble Valley) Lancashire, where the Pendle Hill Witches, along with the Samlesbury witches & others, were tried in the Lancashire Witch Trials.
What an amazing, historical area to live in.
With an ancient and often turbulent and violent past, it's definitely a haunted location and I'd expect, a wonderful place to live!
